My grandfather was born and raised on Chesapeake Bay and went out on the water in the mornings looking for soft crabs. Many years later and much farther South in Tennessee they brought some home from a trip back there to visit family. Decades later you are making hungry.
What an awesome video! Who could imagine that this creature could provide a livelihood, support heathy eating, and connect the lives of folks who otherwise would have never share time with each other. The crab is truly a magnificent creature and we thank you for sharing your journey!
Maryland was a great state to grow up in. Countless weekends visiting family and eating crabs . Givin to me by grandma, My pewter crab knocker is one of my prized possessions
We spent vacations on the lower eastern shore - northampton county. We played in the bay, occahanock, hungars, nassawadox. Sand fleas, no-see-ums, egrets, herons, and osprey. Wouldn't trade it for anything. The blessing of the occasional soft crab is an absolute treat -- a table full of crabs, crab hammers, crackers, mini forks, and picks, homemade potato salad, slaw, and corn, and you're set for hours. Picking the steamers to stuff the flounder that we've caught out along the shipping channel or flats is another level too!! Some fresh shucked oysters for appetizers with an ice cold Yuenglings and you're all set ! Wishing you following seas, full pots, tight lines, and well marked channels (and oyster beds) !!!
Love the editing on this. I'm down here in Virginia on the Rappahannock. Love soft shells. Only part I don't like is the mustard haha! I clean mine out which I know ruins some of the flavor😂
I use to visit Maryland alot. My mom lgrew up there and my grandparents died there. I grew up crabbing on The Severn River as they lived in southdown shores. I love crab and really miss it. Wish I could get them here as easy
Another great video! From a former chef that runs commercial trotline on the weekends that right there is what its all about. Now in flooring as one of my customers told me in regards to picking out colors its not, "cant see it from my house" its "looks good from my house". Keep up the good work!
Great video, soft shells were hard to get this summer here in Delaware, but I snagged a few a couple weeks ago. Fried them up and served over toast with lots of lemon...Thanks CJ
Angler Up with Brant, Bama Beach Bum, Camera Man Ron, I want to get some of your worst crabs before the season ends. Hard, soft shells. Keep the FV running. it is so much fun to see your crew on the Chesie. Chesapeake Bay.
I love soft shells. We dress them a little differently where I live. I’ve wondered, if I ordered one if I were to visit, if my request could be honored. I cannot bring myself to eat the mustard or top shell. Legs, no problem!
You will see Saturday!! Lol I used J.O. breading. First time using this , and let me tell ya what. That season was awesome! Man I love your editing sir!
Just a caution… if you intend to fry your crab in an oil bath, make sure you either remove the water sacs behind the eyes in the middle of the body, or protect yourself from the hot splatter when you cook it. The sacks will split during cooking.
Nah basically the same as you, but used J.O. batter seasoning. Let me tell ya my first time using this and it was freaking awesome. Had a little kick as you would expect from JO.
I recreational fish for crabs on the west coast (rock, Dungeness) I think I have to take a trip to East Coast and try some blue crabs. That soft shell looked amazing!
Maine lobsterman here and everything you said is true. 👍 when I start catching soft shell lobster I try to take my neighbors out to the only Island we have that has a Sandy Beach and then steam lobsters that I caught. i spoiled them they don't want to eat lobsters any other way just steamed on an island eating lobster standing in the water 👍👍
@@brankohodzic I am at times 😂 female lobsters have just started to shed up this way in the last week or so also kind of interesting I'm guessing the lobsters and your crab run about the same time frame
@@CrabdadCJ yes sir and they shed after they drop their eggs. male shed first June July and females August September. everything seems a couple weeks early here this year though
How in the heck did you get so popular? I really appreciate how you depict the actual life of a Maryland water men..... oh shit.... person.... woman... eff all that woke stuff. SBY MD and a lover of FV..... Miss Paula? means something. That soft shell is going to be delicious!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a question for you. I'm opening a food truck and I'm selling only soft shell crab sandwiches. Do you know anyone that has a contact or connection for a constant supply of soft shell.
The big changes already happened in 2020. We had to go on hiatus last year until we restarted last spring. So don’t worry, the content will keep coming. Ive been back a bunch already this year. It’s just a little more traveling.
Kids aren’t stupid they already know many things one of them is they did not want you to pull the top off that live crab so they are going to teach you
I don't want to eat a soft shell crab. You removed the gills and apron and eyes, but not the actual intestines. When it was being cut, I could see the intestines laying on the shell.😢

The way it should be. Those types of memories will last a lifetime.
Down here in Georgia we call 1/2 lemonade 1/2 ice tea an Arnold Palmer👍😎
Pretty much across the country

Softcrab on white with butter hmmmmmmm good eating !
I’ve always had my soft shells breaded, now I need to try it just sautéed! Yum!!!!
lightly dust with flour and old bay imo gets it extra crispy
When that mustard hit the grill 🤤
😆👍
What a great video!!! It's not something I would normally watch, but I'm walking away very happy that I chose to watch this.

Glad we could bring you back.
Thanks for.sharing. I can relate and enjoy, being a waterman from South America (Ecuador).
Very cool, thanks for commenting. Which fishery are you in down there?
@@brankohodzic Hola amigo. Blue Crab, was the pioneer exporting during 1986-2003. Then I got into the tourism business. Looking to get back in again.

Awesome video though by the way and you are correct... Crabs are best eaten with friends and family.
Are they really??

CJ has the best!! Flour salt pepper old bay mixed “to taste”. Sauté in butter after egg wash. Lettuce fresh md tomatoes sliced on wheat toast!
Thanks. That's definitely a great way to do them.
Man, you are making me hungry CJ! Looks great!
This is the best video ever. Love the comrade and sharing the love of food/crabs in the most freshest way possible. Nice work you guys/girls👍😎💯💪🏻🦀

Do lobsters have to be soft to mate like Blue Crabs?
@@CrabdadCJ yes sir and they shed after they drop their eggs. male shed first June July and females August September. everything seems a couple weeks early here this year though
Interesting. Female crabs don't shed again after they become mature. They hold over sperm to keep making sponges.
What about steaming the soft shells like the hards are steamed, anybody ever try it? Great info. Thanks CJ
I think the soft crab would end up kind of mushy and sloppy if you steamed it. But I’ll try it out some time to find out
Bread them and deep fry. Taste buds orgasm, I promise you!
I've steamed them often and like it. It tastes like crab first and not breading first.
So, do you sale to individuals or just big vendor folks?
Mostly just sell to a carry out.
First chyea!
@thcsnake38 So did you get your trophy yet? Or your plaque?
I’d be all over that good white meat. You can keep the “mustard”. When I’m in Louisiana, I eat the crawfish tails, but I don’t suck the heads.

You better cook it first to kill it before you cut it
No other way to cook a soft crab..batter takes away from the taste of the softcrab
