  • Captain CJ shows how to achieve extra flavor in LIGHT Crabs with a simple multi-purpose trick. Plus how to steam a big pot of Blue Crabs in the 1st of 4 part series focusing on LIGHT Crabs.
Have you ever ordered steamed crabs & to your disappointment you discover they don't have much meat & are watery? The average consumer might have minimal understanding of light, or trash crabs. These are crabs that are not jam packed with meat as they have just shed recently. While unwanted when paying top dollar for heavy, full crabs, there are many benefits to seeking out these "less desirable" crabs as Captain CJ demonstrates.

Bob, I was excited to learn how prevalent but under appreciated blue crab is in Florida. Lived in MD for 65 years and can't remember the first time I went crabbing. We winter in SW Florida and have yet to find a blue crab that compares to a MD crab in flavor and sweetness. Big disappointment since we catch them in decent numbers in pots from our pier. For the most part they get picked out and used for crab cakes and other dishes vs eating them whole.

I don’t often see a crab house that separates the whiteys/light crabs from the heavies. Most places I’ve been to or around since 1979 don’t do that. They pass all the crabs off as good heavy crabs. I’ve only seen one place that actually sells them as picking crabs. It’s more fair to me. I agree with you about the Old bay- sure it’s great and all but not for steaming crabs. But to each his own.

I growed up way down South Louisiana. We boil them here, well come to think of it, we boil everything here so…
Now ya got me wondering what difference there would be steamed vs boiled.
When we serve our crabs we serve them on their backs. That she’ll holds a nice little sip or two of some of the most delicious broth.
I ain’t saying one ways better than the other. But maybe a comparison video would be a good idea.
