Thanks for providing this video...truly helpful! I have a question though. I’m engaged in healthcare research and am utilizing ICD 10 codes to select cases from a large database. There are 35 different diagnoses columns for each respective patient. All diagnoses columns are designated as string variables due to their respective ICD 10 classifications having both letters and numbers. If I wanted to find specific diagnoses, could I use the “recode in different variables” option, recode the string variables with their ICD 10 codes into numeric values, and set everything else as 0 to capture just those cases I’m interested in examining?

Thanks for sharing this video! It was super informative. Through the transform into different variables command, I changed a string code into a numeric one, designating it as 1000 to identify it. I want to select that case to create my desired dataset. I know I need to convert this string code to a numeric one to select the cases I’m interested in examining on SPSS but do I need to designate a value to it in the variable view window since I’ve already designated it as 1000 during the transform into different variables command?
You saved me too! I have more questions, though. For instance, do I now change the "measure" from nominal to ordinal? Another, how do I set up matrix survey question data with multi-q and multi-answer? It keeps running stats on each separate variable and I want to look at them together... Thanks.

I do have a query... When I imported the first answers from xls it came as a string (text) and I created different variables and applied all values.
I have imported more data from another xls spreadsheet and I do have to turn it all again in numerical values. How can apply my values to the new string data without double-clicking when on reply??? It's driving me mental....

This was very helpful, now I can run reports and make graphs with my categorical data. I have a question though: When I make a histogram or other chart, how do I show the value labels? With 20 or more values and only seeing the number and not an actual name it's difficult to interpret. Hope you see this, thanks.

What do I do if I want to recode multiple variables? For example if there's 10 questions with 3 options(high, medium,low), how do I recode them to 3, 2, 1 all at once?

I uploaded a .xlsx file to SPSS. In the Variable View screen, I changed the data type from String to Numeric. After making it, in Data View screen, I find that entries for that variable have been deleted completely. How I can fix it?
Never do it !! Once u done ur data is gone !! When all are there , create a new variable using this technique with new name !!
Hi, do you also know how to convert your string data to multiple numeric data?Because the respondent gave two answers that each stand for a different outcome. For example, 1 respondent answered with: Yes, I have been to the supermarket and to the park. And supermarket has been coded '1' en park has been coded '2'. Is it possible to Give two codes to 1 respondent? And if so, how? I hope this makes sense.
Hey Evelien. The situation you describe is more similar to 'open coding' with 'multiple responses allowed'. There is a text analysis feature in SPSS which you can look into, but the method I have described in this video is more useful for simple string to numeric recording and may not be useful for text analysis.
