SPSS - How to Convert String Variables into Numeric?

  • DESCRIPTION:
    Converting string variables into numeric ones can be done in variable view.
    However, a better option is fixing all variables with a single line of syntax such as
    ALTER TYPE V01 TO V10 (F8.2).
    Now, whatever method you choose, things get tricky if
    -values have a period or comma as decimal separator,
    -empty cells or even
    -illegal characters in some values.
    Sadly, none of the other videos deal with these common issues.
    So in this SPSS beginners video, I'll show how to do this the right way.
