Thanks for sharing. However, I have 2 questions.
1. Why is it that, sometimes when you go into Variable view and change the variable type from string to numeric, all of the data disappears? Why does this happen?
2. Does this work only by recoding 'into the same variable'? I was always trying to do this by recoding into a different variable.

you can also change to variable view and change by clicking string and choosing numeric etc
