5VZ Crank Pulley Holding Tool Round 2, and a little Teaser for my Timing Belt Video!

- My first tool attempt was a major disaster, so here is round 2.
(To watch me struggle with my first version of this tool, check out the beginning of this video: • Business-Related Quest... )
No, I've never owned this tool.
When I worked at the Toyota dealership, the actual factory tool (not the Schlay version, which can be found here:www.autotoolworld.com/Schley-... ) was part of a set of special Toyota tools that we could check out when needed. It was nice. Now that I am on my own, and $$$ is tight, I need to start buying... or making tools.
🔧
Here, I made a tool with the help of my dear friend, and very talented machinist, Danny Soliz of Hill Country Performance. Thanks, Danny!!
I also give a little foreshadow for my Timing belt video, which I finished filming back in March, but I haven't had time to edit completely yet, because it is really long and my computer and program crashes excessively for anything over 10 minutes. Yay!
I have unintentionally tricked many of you into thinking that I am a full-time RUclipsr who's only job is to provide you with these random automotive tutorials, BUT NOPE!! This is just something I do for fun in my free time, so the videos come as they will on my own time.

I love it when a plan comes together!
Faye's bubbly personality is why we're here. The car stuff is just a bonus. :)
Right!:)
She is a fun date!
You had me at Home Depot Motorsports, great video Faye. Nothing at all wrong with making your own tools to save some cash.
I know this video is old, but I just wanted to comment that this video was awesome because it validated the same idea that I came up with on my own. Glad somebody else thinks the same way I do!
Yes support local machine shops! Stud or broken bolt removal, jig building, you name it. Even welding
Love your videos! If I lived a bit closer I would hire you for your services in a heartbeat
Keep up the great work beautiful!
Nice job! Creative! It's so nice to watch someone having a blast and laughing. Cheers from Chicago!
This is what RUclips used to be. Entertaining and educational videos made by awesome people
Love watching anybody enjoying what they do. This field can make you crazy. Can spend way to much money on tools you use once. Great insight.
I really appreciate how good your production is compared to your earlier videos.
I like how you think outside the box to do your shop repair. For me as a certified RV technician I get jobs that require thinking outside the box for ideas to do some repairs. For I got some hand made tools to do special jobs over the years both in RV service and my own auto service work at home. Keep up the great service work!!
I stumbled upon your channel like a month ago by accident. I was watching some other automotive stuff and fell asleep for a couple hours and woke up and one of your videos were on. I watched one and subscribed. You are awesome. Cute, funny, and you know your stuff. Keep up the good content girl.😁👍
Lets be honest who wishes their local garage had a faye? Such a cheery bubbly person the garage would be the happiest
great video! and Also thanks for the audio reduction... I seriously think that you are the ONLY youtuber that has done this.... nothing will blast out your speakers and eardrums out better than the sound of a power tool doing its thing. Keep up the good work!
Hey your ride is sounding nice, and good work on your homemade tool there's nothing like the feeling you get when something you create works how it's supposed . Can't wait for the next vid!
Faye, you are AWESOME! I've recently started watching your videos. I'm enjoying them.
I installed Underdrive Pulleys on my '96 Mustang GT; 4.6L. I used the old fan belt. I cut it in half; wrapped it around the pulley - counter to the force I was/am/is/will be applied. I held it in place with small pieces and strips of Gorilla Tape. I did not want to mess about with the belt moving about; slipping and/or falling off.
On the Crank Pulley, I made 150 ft/lbs, and on my Water Pump Pulley, I made 20 foot pounds... I had absolutely no issues with the taped belt (old cut one). I do not think one needs to go to the store whatsoever...
Pretty much every Car "Guy" (you too Faye) is doing their build(s) on a tight budget. This one costs at most a roll of Gorilla Tape.
It's easy, smart, and the cheapest tool I've had to buy to date with my build.
Cheers Faye. Like the video...
217 ft lbs with No Cheater Bar!? Beasttt! 👍🏻
HAHAHA my cheater bar doesn't fit over the torque wrench!!! and hey! I work out!!!
@@FayeHadley lol....I always just use my floor jack handle. Especially when removing one that had threadlocker on it
I use a large 6' plumbing pipe, it fits over any handle, it's one piece. my cheapo 2.5 ton jack from Wally world, has a 2 piece handle, I don't trust it to do the job. It's made of "Chineseisum", as AvE says.
The quality of your videos is so good. I love watching them. I really hope you get some generous sponsors soon. Toyota and Snapon would be a good start. Keep it up
I wish this knowledge was available like 2 years ago when I try to change the timing belt of my 98 pathfinder by myself, such a nightmare to remove and then torque the bolt. 💖
You have the best laugh!, I can't help but smile watching your videos... Great channel 👍🇨🇦
Been missing seeing you doing a video love your videos thanks so much for taking the time to make them for us your awesome
So, I did something similar. As a welder who didn’t want to go buy a tool I’d use maybe a handful of times, I welded some bolts on a hook shaped piece I had laying around and a shaft. It worked great.
NIIICE!!!! I wanted to make a 3rd tool - the welded version, but I am a pretty bad welder.... I mean, it may work, but it doesn't look pretty :)
Faye I just can’t get enough of you!! You make my day!!
You're cool Faye!
This is American ingenuity at its best!
Keep up the good work!!
After 30 yrs of wrenching, my toolbox has a whole lot of shop-made tools, that did the job at a much lower cost
My father owned a shop, and I started working there at a really young age. I took in as much information as I could about his tools and what there were used for:) really odd stuff:) When he passed away a little over 20 years ago I inherited his wonderful collection of tools. I still have a few things I have no clue what there for or why they were made!:)
I had old men showing me how to fix forklifts built before they were born. The factory didn't supply special tools, so we had to make them. Now I'm teaching myself how to fix old Kawasaki motorcycles, and those factory tools are also nonexistent! So,I make what I need!
Anyone who has done a variety of repair work has learned how to modify wrenches and build gadgets to get the work done. I remember building a hub wrench for a farm tractor on something that resembled a monster truck, it was like 4-5/8 hex about 5-inches deep. These young people are taught to buy everything to support the marketplace, one of the secrets of public education funded by the government.
That tool was a great idea . Congratulations on being successful with that idea and the job . Also , your 4 runner is coming along great!
ok, we redrilled (different holes) a bmw crank holding tool for toyota V6 love your videos... you have great delivery and a wonderful sense of humor... hollywood needs your face...
Always enjoy your videos, keep on being you!
Nice job Faye!!! I made the same tool, works like a champ! Can’t wait to see more.
One-off special tools always beats store-bought tools. They're in a totally different league.
Chicken cameo 😍. I cannot get enough of that bundle of joy.
Me neither!! :))
Now that’s Innovation that excites
Your videos are so interesting, I ve learning so much and love your laughing. 😀
D'most happiest auto mechanic in the world!
I remember doing a timing belt on an older Honda Civic, didn't have a chain strap wrench, so I jacked car up, put a jack stand with a thick piece of rubber in between the stand cradle and crank pulley lowered most of the weight of the front of the car on stand, them proceeded to take the big bolt out. Sometimes you have to improvise to save some money.
Loving the tool making vid!!
Love your videos, so impressive!
Thanks for sharing and congratulations on the spot on All Girls Garage
The easiest way to get those crank bolts out was to make sure of the direction of rotation then put a socket on a breaker bar then turn the crank in the same direction till the bar touches the frame. Then you go inside and crank the engine for a second. The starter will break it loose every time. We did it all the time at the dealer
Won't you still need a crank pulley holding tool to tighten the pulley for the reinstall?
knowledge and a smile ... the 2 best things to have
Yes! Great video I’ve been waiting came out good!
I made myself my own tool out of flat stock steel with grade eight hardware. . Works great on my 2003 Toyota Tundra . I used Rock auto for timing set..
I make all my special tools here too... But I also have all the tools needed to do it... I've had many years to acquire them it didn't happen over nite... Love the bubbly attitude you have... Silky at the end? Beautiful chicken anyway
Thank you for the smiles you gave me
That was cool I love your videos, your attitude, your smile and your chicken.
Very clever:) love your mind and your demeanor:) your an inspiration to so many people out there!
Excellent job ❤️
Good job Faye . very creative.
Faye, your little MK1 Transformer is sick! Autobots roll out!
I think Im in love. Lol glad I found your channel Faye
Sometimes, I have NO IDEA why you are laughing, but you sure make me smile regardless... That's cool.. Awesome chick!
Love your work girl you are awesome you and the ladies at all girl garage showed my daughter girls can do it to because I been a mechanic 25yrs now and tried to tell her girls can do anything men can thanks for the help plus with all do respect you are beautiful
Love this. I made basically the same tool when I did my MR2 timing belt. Unfortunately the step drill bit I used was too small and had to manually remove enough material so I could get the socket through
You have an amazing vibe, always smiling 👍
Wayyy too cool :). Great job
Excellent work there! Oh and nice job too Fur Chicken.
I just impressed you threw down on that 217ftlbs setting
You can sharpen your bits between each cut on a bench grinder. Took me a few times to get it down, but man, what a diff! Fresh cut with some drilling lube and they just keep drilling! The bits get shorter with time, for obvious reasons but they keep making holes! Nice tool you made! I have a ton of custom tools I've made over the years. Little ingenuity goes a long way!
I can only hope that one of my three granddaughters are like you! ❤
Don't you just love finding out the best tool for the job, whether it was small, slim, short, chubby, flimsy, etc.... but it was the tool that got the job done where the others just couldn't do it.
Wow! Really cool video and cool custom tool! :)
Most of the time, the homemade tool works better than the commercial tool anyway.
Awesome, satisfying when things come together. Love that Bob Marley chicken.
Was watching one of your other videos where you said you were from Gresham. I am in Gresham right now! Small Universe.
I f love the energy coming of this human ..❤️🏴✌️
love the shop chicken!
Well ! you have make my day !! i love a headache problem solved with stile !!! love you !!!! awesome solution thank you ! by the way the idea you have gave me is much appreciated !!!
Girl you are amazing that was amazing thinking right there
Thanks for the videos I work on just my old cars like my old 68 fastback mustang or 46 Chevy I have mostly old cars but every once in a while i will work on the newer cars but I enjoy the older ones plus it’s fun doing body work and paint love your personality nice to see a young women into this field keep up the good work your videos are great thanks
Faye your awesome! Just saw a few of your videos. keep up the good work.
You give great tool!
Funny, I did the same thing back in the early 1980s, used a 1/8" flat steel scrap I had lying around, and still have it today, except it now has multiple holding bolt holes drilled around the center crankshaft bolt access hole for different manufactures harmonic balancers that I have come across, then later I have had to drill out both ends to accommodate even more varieties harmonic balancers that I have come across over the years.
I have made dozens of specialty tools over the years as you will too over time, nice addition to your collection.
Great job by the way. (¼" was overkill IMO)
Also, that looks roughly like a 1977 4 door VW Rabbit that you are driving there, is it?
Great car, I had two of them over the years, still have one and retired the other at +550,000 miles on it, the floorboards 100% rusted out on it, when I would drive through a puddle, it flood the inside of the car, it was that bad.
I wish I lived in Texas I would bring all my stuff to you another great video thank you
Kool tool great video 😀🔧🔧
I made one of those with two flat bars that where maybe 1" wide or so. Joined two ends together with a bolt to make a V shape. Then on the other side I put the bolts in for holding the pully. This design allowed it to fit different sized pullies by spreading them apart and didn't require any large holes drilled
@Jason Harrison --- I'd like to see a picture of that "Rube Goldberg" device 👌
@@Texaca unfortunately I left it in a wearhouse a few years ago. Its not really complicated. Basically like a large pair of scissors without handles and pins or bolts on the ends.
Need this tool today!!
If it's cheaper & easier to make a tool just do it! Great work Faye! :)
So gorgeous!
No better feeling than when something works out!
Love your bangs!
Nice job! Home remedy tool 😎
making custom tools is half the fun of the job! bonus points if you can repurpose old parts - my favorite oil filter wrench when nothing else will do is made of a 1/2" extension with a small block Ford timing chain welded to it. It's called the mangler.
custom tools FTW!
Good job and good idea. 😎
I love how you laugh as you're talking.
Congrats on all girls garage!!!
Just here for the chick.....en!!! Lol!!! Thanks for taking the time to post, Faye!!! Nice job!!!
What are the thread length/size for the bolt?
Too funny...I have one of those tools. Made from scrap 1/2 inch metal and a bike grip handle. The joy of friends with a mill at work and metal scraps...ftw
Good job, Faye
I just love you!!❤️❤️❤️
What bolts did you use? Like size and thread pitch?
Nice job Faye. I too have a tool box full of many shop made tools. Unless you work on one specific brand and model all the time, sometimes the cost of certain specialty tools are not worth it.
Hey so.. you're awesome ?! You're series made my timing job much more comfortable. Also I made this tool and it worked perfectly !
I'm so glad!!! :)
What size are the bolts that actually go in the holes I’m trying to pull my crank out with a pulley thanks for the videos good work
Good job !
Your wood pulley holder was still better than my axle seal driver 9000 made out of pcv pipe fittings 🤣 i drove one seal about half way before it died
Sooo... The new tats are actually what is being shown off here, the tool is cool, and that's a very fluffy ass chicken...
Faye, can you tell me the center to center measurement for you holder tool you made? Thanks!
What sized bolts are you using?
Nice work keep it up
To remove crank dampers I just get a long breaker bar and rest it against the ground, then I bump the starter. So far it's worked every time. For reinstall, I'll use an impact but if there's no room for one than it's the flywheel holding tool or whatever means I can come up with - like this perhaps.
