This man is the goat. I used the engine starter trick and 2 different impacts to no avail. Took a cheater bar and all the strength in me, but mine to pop off using this method.
Nice work. My impact has let me down too. I don't have any straps like in this video, but i have some bungee cords maybe I can make something work with those.
THIS WORKED!!) 1978 Ford F100 Lariat..) Thank you for making this video Sir ! It helped me realize that I also needed a Breaker bar to put more Strength into my turns., (Thankfully before I broke my socket wrench).,. I did have to fight with the strap once I got it tired down, to keep the pulley from turning, and hold the breaker bar at the same time, while getting leverage...But it did Grip!, and with Some PB blaster, and a little patience,. The Bolt broke FREE ! And I also got the four smaller bolts which also held the pulley in which were sung as well. Thanks to you, and Duece!!!
You deserve a freaking medal!!!! I have been struggling for days!!! I had my 351w out of my vehicle and needed to remove a water pump pulley I just strapped it to itself tight and boom came off!!! Thanks
Tried this but the strap just slipped and wouldn’t grip the pulley. I had an old inner tube laying around so I cut a strip of that and then wrapped the strap around the pulley with the inner tube between the pulley and strap. Now the strap gripped the pulley and I was able to remove the bolt.
That’s awesome!!! Yes the straps have to be able to wrap enough to tighten on it’s self. I can see it slipping in cases like yours. Thank you so much for your input! I’m going to see if I can put your comment on the top to help others with the same situation. Take care - Tony
So glad I found this video. I just bought a chevette and the crankshaft pulley wasn't installed. I couldnt figure out how to get it on without spinning! Definitely going to try this tomorrow.
This worked like a charm, thank you. Crank pulley torque is 250lbft and I had to take it off for a cam swap. Had the car in gear with the brakes on and tried doing it without the strap and it was slipping the clutch.
Nice trick! I've gotta replace the water pump on my old 96' BMW 750, and I've been pretty worried about this bolt. Definitely going to try this, thanks so much!
I hope this works pulling the actual pulley out. I got the bolt out with my Milwaukee 1/2 impact but now I can't remove the pulley without it spinning and it's driving me nuts. I need to replace my oil pump in my 4.8 vortec and this is the 2nd to last step
This worked for me torquing a bolt to 200 lb-ft well after stores had closed for the night (couldn't get bolts to make a tool). The whole motor was moving when yarding on the wrench. Thanks for the tip!
Hoping you success and good luck. Yes, when I tried my impact to take it off it kept spinning the motor and was afraid of tearing something up internally like valves when my timing belt was totally broke in half. Take care, Tony Please let me know
At min 3:28, when re-tightening the pulley nut, I see the pulley belt is already removed. Does this mean that for either removal or re-tightening the pulley nut, first the belt needs to be removed? Or is this method of holding the pulley in place also possible with the belt fitted? Thanks.
This is for when you are or have been having to work on something that requires you to remove the pulley nut. So the belts would already be removed. In theory I guess you could do it with it on, I wouldn’t want to remove with the belt on because as you’re loosening it, it would make the pulley pull to the side
AWESOME!!! Thank you for letting me know it helped you. It’s a great feeling when you take the time to comment. You have an amazing day and take care, Tony
This is a good way to do it, I myself do the same thing but with an old large fan belt, Rubber for grip, but i make the belt pinch under itself so the more is slips the tighter is becomes until it does not slip at all
Used this method with the Ratchet Strap and it worked to hold the pulley in place. I also used the "Bump Start" with a long bar and the Crankshaft bolt broke loose.
Awesome!!! I was going to try the bump start method and was worried about it flying off 🤣 If it was any more stubborn it was going to happen 😂 Take care and thanks for the comment, Tony
Thanks for sharing. I'd tried just about everything to break my hb bolt loose before I decided to check youtube. I used what I seen yesterday on my Lincoln LS V8. It tried to work but I couldnt get the strap alone to bite so it would slip. So what I did to get more grip/bite was to cut a piece of rubber from a bike intertube long enough to cover about 3rd of the hb. and laid it on the grooves and them wrapped my strap.
Thank you so much for posting this At 70 I have to replace my daughter hormonic balance But could not figure out how to keep the the crankshaft from turning At about torque of 200 foot lbs. it was impossible but know thanks to you I can do it
Thank you for the kind words I so hope that this video helped you. I hope I am able at 70 to even attempt to work on vehicles. That is awesome you are able to help your daughter and save her money. You are a good father. Take care, Tony
sir greetings from across the pond.... am i correct in assuming if i do this RIGHT i dont need to lock the fly wheel with some fancy tool (i dont have )?????
Hello, I would definitely give it a go if you don’t have a tool. I’ve had others on my comment section say they had trouble with slipping, and others wrapping some types of rubber along with this method for traction. For most and I it works excellent. I hope you have an awesome evening, Tony
Thanks for posting sir. This may be just the ticket to repair my leaky front seal on my F150 5.4L. I’d really prefer to use the proper torquing sequence over an impact.
Sorry to hear that is happening. If you can try to definitely overlap the first wrap adding tension. If you have another strap try adding it to get more wraps. Turn it until you can feel it grab then keep the tension sometimes it will slip around a few times until you get it to grab onto itself. I hope you can get it to work for you cause they are frustrating already to get off. Hoping you success, Tony
Hello, no it didn’t move the timing marks there’s a key slot and the timing belt is already installed. It can turn all it wants. Of course you want it to lock down for torque or removal. On install you would be using a timing light to fine tune after the install too
This one is good too.. but its easier to use an old serpentine or timing belt.. just place it on another pulley nearby and overlap it inside the pulley.
Tried it. But before the torque wrench clicks the whole engine bends towards the right side. I guess the engine support rubbers are the weak part in this case
That’s messed up. So no matter how you was to lock it down to use a torque wrench it would do that. If possible I would put a ratchet strap around the side lifting up around the engine support to the frame separately. You have to be close to the click. It’s definitely stopping the motor from turning though? I know you’re probably aggravated but give it another try if possible to get to mount to anchor it from moving from rubber mounts. Hope this helps you. Take care - Tony
@@HowYouCanDoItToo i just did it another way. I just used thread locker fluid that holds up to 250 ft-lb and tightend it as hard as I could until the rubbers started to move. Many local mecanics in Costa Rica do it this way. I also saw old loctite thread locker on the screw when i took it out
Nice. Never seen this method. I have to remove my harmonic balancer. Have been researching strap wrenches when come across this! Wish me luck, i will be using this method.
Hello, yes I have impact as well. Some people don’t and I always try to make videos to help as many people as I scan. It’s for the ones that click on the impact videos and don’t have one and some motors will spin regardless. Just another way. I always appreciate learning and answering great questions. You have an awesome day, Tony
Some people on the comments used a piece of rubber in between the wrap. Also make sure you’re wrapping it where it will catch on its self good. One more thing I tried on a tougher one is use two if you have them. Use the first one around your frame and get it closer to the crank then that will give you a lot more wraps around the crank with the second one hooked on the first so not to slip. Sometimes it will slip at first until it grabs on itself. I hope this helps. Please let me know and it’s another day so it will come off. That ole step away method helps me more then you can know. 😂 Take care, Tony
Ha! Been staring at that same strap right next to the car and wondering if there was some way to use it to break loose my crankshaft pulley bolt. Those special tools are too expensive.
I just broke the crankshaft pulley bolt loose on my 2008 Honda Fit! I used a "3:1 Torque Multiplier ($257 new on Amazon)" and the crank pulley holding tool ($13). I ran a bunch of 1/2" extensions out from the multiplier and rested them on a jack stand and used a breaker bar with a 4 ft. cheater pipe on it and it broke loose. Even though the torque multiplier is rated for 1100 ft/lbs, I still had to put out on that cheater pipe. My 450 ft/lb. electric impact with the special crankshaft 19mm socket from Honda was not enough to break it loose.
Agreed they can be a nightmare especially when taking it off even with an impact and the motor spins with it. You definitely don’t want the motor spinning on some motors because it can bend stuff. I am not a mechanic but was told on some motors it can slam the valves especially if belt is broken. I hope I never have to do it again so far since I made this video everything still working good l. Take care, Tony
Didn't work for me but it was a good idea worth a shot. I tried it both ways as I was trying to loosen the Crack pulley bolt. I wrapped it from underneath and around held the rest of the slack in the strap with one hand, then tried unloosing the bolt with a breaker bar but no luck. So then I wrapped it from the top and around the pulley still no luck the pulley still kept wanting to move as I was trying to loosen it. Crazy thing is I went to the junkyard to pull a part behind the crank pulley and that bolt came off with ease I also used my longest breaker bar with I think the bolt was 13/16 and it didn't take no effort of unloosing it. Wish I had a impact I am sure that would have spun it off with the pulley not moving. Just and update the impact wrench worked just as I expected it to spin the bolt right off. Was worth the $329 at home depot got a carrying bag with tool battery and battery charger. This tool spun it off with little to no force like two in half uge duges and of course with it on the nut busting setting as I tried all three settings before that. Get you one if you want peace of mind and a back up plan
It can be the long end of any kind of tie down strap. You need enough wraps to get it to lock down on itself. I used this type of tie down strap because that’s what I had. There is ratchet type as well.
Damn!!! That’s one heck of a lot of torque. If I stood on the torque wrench I wouldn’t have enough azz!! 😂 I hope you are successful with this method. Some people in comments added a piece of rubber tubing laying around. I would try to use as many wraps as you can even if you have to add another strap to lock it if it starts to spin. Sometimes it will have to spin some until the wraps tighten so don’t give up if it spins some. I am looking forward to your update. Take care, Tony
Hello for my vehicle I added the torque spec around 50 seconds into the video. I mainly posted this so people can use this method on many vehicle models and those specs will all be different. The reason I am answering in this way is I said in my video the torque for my year and model and didn’t want to throw my specs at you and mess you up if you are asking for different vehicle. Take care and have a great day, Tony
I thought I finally nailed it. But no. I habe a Master MK1 from 1984 and I can't remove the water pump pulley. I know that most of these pulleys are attached with three bolts bit this one has something extra "pulley" attached on it that just spins freely. I have no clue what it doe, but it stands on it that it's from an Italian factory that makes clutches. The thing is that when I do what you do in the video, it seems to finnaly work, but I'm a bit worried what will happen if I put all my strength in cause the whole engine is moving when I try to break the bolt loose.
Hoping you much success and this method helps you. If you do notice it slipping try using more wraps if you can until it grabs. Some people in the thread added a piece of rubber that helped too. But usually a good tight wrap works for me. Take care, Tony
Like how everyone freaks out about the timing being off after that. It's the crank pulley, not a geared sprocket nor cogged belt/timing chain that you'd find behind all the accessory drive pulleys. The only thing you have to worry about is setting up to which way the engine rotates.
Good question. I know on my Nissan and others I have is left to take off right to tighten. But I would check your vehicles spec’s just in case it’s threaded opposite. I am not a mechanic by any means. 😆 I know sometimes they can be freaking tight as heck and having you second guessing yourself if you’re going the right way. Take care, Tony
I had to lay a rubber piece on the pulley to keep strap from slipping but it worked like a charm! I had to put 185lbs. Of torque on my Tacoma and I almost couldn’t do it😂
AWESOME!!! I am so glad you got it!!! Thank you for letting me know it worked for you with adding the rubber piece with it. Have an amazing week and take care, Tony
No luck. I even duck taped the strap. I am turning counter clockwise to remove. 1999 dodge Durango. The strap got loose. I thought I heard a pop. It's still tight. Got everything off except this crackshaft pulley. Radiator is still in. It's been a nightmare.
Awesome!!! It can definitely be a nightmare sometimes! I will remember the duct tape if I run into the same problem. Thank you for letting me know. Take care
Is it slipping? If you can add more wraps and make sure the wraps are on top of each other. And as tight as you can. I hope you can get it cause it is aggravating with a stubborn bolt. If you can find some kind of rubber to add in pulley first might help. Once it grabs and stops slipping keep the tension. Again hope it breaks loose for you this way.
@@HowYouCanDoItToo i put the serpentine belt on and used a ratchet strap to titen around the belt squeezing it then tried it didn't come lose and tore my belt up. But I tightened it tighter and got it but the timming wasn't all that was wrong the right side spark plug was smashed like no gap and crushed
Just pray the brakerbar with impact bit on against the floor and crank your starter without starting the engine (remove fuel/spark supply) wuala. Highest torque output you will get.
Thank you I have heard of doing it this way. I was a little nervous afraid of breaking something 😂 I always appreciate extra knowledge. Thank you and I hope you have an excellent weekend, Tony

My 450 ft/lb. electric impact with the special crankshaft 19mm socket from Honda was not enough to break it loose.
That’s a very good idea … although the proof of the pudding is if it works on removal but on a pulley that has been in situ for a long time..
Slick move, thanks from across the pond.
Great idea , I didn’t think of that , I have a stubborn one on an old Citreon , so that’s tomorrow’s job 👍🏻thanks again
Thank you, hoping everything goes smoothly for you. Take care, Tony
Great job to you and your excellent camera man!!🎉
Thank you so much!!! I will pass this on to Duce he is like 6’6” now. He’s more like a boom camera man now 😂 Have an awesome weekend, Tony
I like this idea of the frame wrap ! Thanks 👍👍👍✌✌✌🐎🐎🐎
Thank you, it sure makes it a lot easier. Take care - Tony
Thank you sir, you just made my life that much easier
Thank you helped me out a ton on gettin that same bolt off so thank you again
That is awesome!!!
Whats the name of this type of strap ?
It can be the long end of any kind of tie down strap. You need enough wraps to get it to lock down on itself. I used this type of tie down strap because that’s what I had. There is ratchet type as well.
You are an absolute genius thank you soooooo much!
Thank you so much for the kind comment!!! It means a lot to me. You have an awesome week, Tony
Shall be trying this on the weekend. Wish me luck 🙏
It’s going to work I have faith. But just Incase good luck 👍 😆 Take care and let me know how it went, Tony
@@HowYouCanDoItToo shall keep you updated. Need to get some new tools to get the fan off I think.
Great tip. I got to 100 ft pounds and couldn't get it to stop slipping, need to get to 130
Next time cut a piece of inner tube and put it between the strap and pulley
I'll give this a shot tomorrow and report back. gotta torque the balancer on my 71 buick 455 to 200lbs min!
Worked perfectly. Thanks for the great tip
Awesome thank you for letting me know it worked for you. It makes me happy when my videos help people. Take care, Tony
Not sure if this would work on a silverado with a torque to yield crankshaft pulley bolt. Requires significantly more torque
Thanks for the video used your technique and it worked perfectly, saved me a lot of time...
Awesome!!! Thank you for letting me know. Take care, Tony
what was the torque spec???
I will be doing my timing belt in 2 days. ...This is useful info since I dont have an Impact & will be wrenching it.
Thank you, thank you - this will save me time and trouble
I’m so happy this video will help you! Thank you for letting me know and others on the comments section. Take care and have an awesome day, Tony
Just use this technique it works great was fairly easy thanks
Awesome!!! I’m happy it helped you. Have a great weekend, Tony
Sir you did an AMAZING Job! "if i can do it, You can too"
Thank you so much 😊 Take care, Tony
Never forget deuce
It turn left or right?
Good question. I know on my Nissan and others I have is left to take off right to tighten. But I would check your vehicles spec’s just in case it’s threaded opposite. I am not a mechanic by any means. 😆 I know sometimes they can be freaking tight as heck and having you second guessing yourself if you’re going the right way. Take care, Tony
thanks! Just worked on my '77 Triumph Spitfire after I'd almost given up hope
Love your video. Now that also shows people where the hogs eat the cabbage. You're very like you have a good camera assistant.
Worked great!!! Thanks for the tip!
Awesome!!! Thank you so much for letting me know. You have an awesome day, Tony
Great job. That showed people where HOGS eat cabbage. Good thing you got a great cameraman
😂 yes, he’s growing up to fast now. Take care, Tony
Very Awesome Trick!!!!! Wil Try It Myself!!! Props to you Sir!!!
Thank you and I hope it goes easy for you. Take care and if you get a chance please let me know how it went. Have a great day - Tony
That's very helpful and informative. Thanks.
This was very good useful information I'm going to try this tomorrow
Going to try this right now great video.
Thank you I hope it helps you. Take care, Tony
Oh man very useful video! Thank you so much sir🙏
Thank you for the awesome comment! Take care, Tony
Great job, Duke!
Thank you so much
Worked like a charm! Thank you!
Awesome!!! Thank you for letting me know. Take care, Tony
Trying to do this right now.
No luck. I even duck taped the strap. I am turning counter clockwise to remove. 1999 dodge Durango. The strap got loose. I thought I heard a pop. It's still tight. Got everything off except this crackshaft pulley. Radiator is still in. It's been a nightmare.
Got it off using this method. It worked with the duck tape.
Awesome!!! It can definitely be a nightmare sometimes! I will remember the duct tape if I run into the same problem. Thank you for letting me know. Take care
@@HowYouCanDoItToo Thanks your method does work just for mine it needed the duck taped. But rest assured this method works.
What if this doesn't even work? To take it off
Is it slipping?
Great video! I learned something today! Thank you sir!
Definitely gonna give this a shoot. Had to replace water pump on a 98 mazada protege which requires removing the crank pulley
@HowYouCanDoItToo i was exactly in your shoes. I am still quite new to mechanics as a hobby weakend warrior. Best offocurse is to buy flywheel locking tool.
Thank you for your helpful video
That’s so awesome!!! I’m happy this helped you 😊 I hope you are having an amazing day, Tony
Hats off to you two 👑👑
Great Idea!!!! Thank you!
Thanks! worked an easy treat
That’s so awesome!!! Thank you for letting me and others know. You take care and have a great upcoming weekend, Tony
