    Hey, had this problem today, your video was the first one I watched, and that was the exact problem, it was tight, gave it a good tug, got it to free spin, hit the key and Bam! ignition. Thanks for the video, saved me a bunch of wasted time. good job.

    THANKS!
    This got mine to turn over at least, buying some starter fluid to try and get it to run. I've replaced battery, starter, solenoid, carb, filters, but the starter was getting jammed in the "flywheel", but when I followed your advice, it turned over as it should, but it still gets jammed again, and the reason I'm getting starter fluid.

    By God’s grace I found your video, just what I needed. I had already replaced the battery and the spark plug and still no luck just the sound “click “ . After watching your video I tried what you suggested and “bam” the beautiful sound of the engine turning on.
    Thank you for sharing this video!

    The problem you described is typical of your valves requiring adjustment. It is easy to do! Simply pop off the valve cover, remove the spark plug, insert a thin screw driver in the spark plug hole so the tip rests on the top of the piston head. Rotate that flywheel until the screwdriver rises to the highest point (top dead center). Then using a feeler gauge, measure the gap between the exhaust valve and then the intake valve. The feeler gauge should fit in the gap and provide some resistance, but not so much that you can't move it around. You have to check the internet to find what the gap setting is for your particular mower engine. My Briggs pressure washer valve gap for the intake was .005mm. If the gap is too sloppy or too tight, loosen the adjustment nuts on the rod and tighten them with your feeler gauge in the gap. There is some tolerance, but if they are not set properly, you could risk blowing your engine!

      Did your tractor continue to run great or did you eventually reset your valves, just curious about what happens later down the road and what to expect a year from now

  • @Andrew-hg6hp
    @Andrew-hg6hp 3 года назад +7

    This is usually the lash on your rockers. Supposed to be between 0.004 and 0.006 inch . I had this same issue because one exhaust valve was out to 0.012 inch. When there is excessive lash in the valve adjustment it does not allow the decompression system to work and you're hung up on the compression stroke.

  • @123gopesh

    Thanks, my one year old craftsman single cylinder 19hp had this issue. Found your video, gave it a turn and it started. It also spewed black oil out of exhaust. I had changed oil with synthetic 5w30 as part of winterization. This year I will add couple of drops to cylinder as well.

  • @TwoTrakMind
    @TwoTrakMind 5 лет назад +16

    There's a good chance your valves are out of adjustment, which is causing too much compression that your starter can't overcome. Manually turning the flywheel may work, because it gives the starter enough time to get the flywheel spinning before the next compression stroke. However, it doesn't fix your problem. Best to seek a professional.

    • @TheEyerobot
      @TheEyerobot 2 года назад +2

      First make sure you don't have gas in your oil, If you do, Then your carb needle is stuck open. Second open the valve cover, And measure the gap between the valve stem and rocker arm with a feeler gauge. Look up your model tractor online to see what the gap should be for the intake and exhaust, Loosen the center set screw, Adust the nut to the correct setting. Then tighten it down with the set screw. Replace the valve cover and test.

  • @Handy92079

    If it's bound up, I would check the valves because your compression could be what's causing it to bind. And you WILL blow your motor up if that's the case. Takes 5 minutes to adjust the valves and would be wise to check every time you change the oil. Trust me I learn things the hard way.😁

      Ivan T the intake and exhaust. They're usually located in the front of the engine on these riders. Disconnect the spark plug. Take off the four bolts on the valve cover. Put a pan under the cover to catch oil, etc. take off The cover. Be sure not to damage the gasket. If its damaged, replace it. The gap should be 0.004 or four thousandths of an inch. Carb cleaner. My LT 2000 won't turn over ,out of nowhere ! I pull the spark plug and it turns over like a champ ,good compression will blow my thumb out ! I m thinking exhaust valve may not be opening like a keeper fell off ,then I read on here about compression release feature. Started my head a spinning ! Would a 5 year old well maintained Briggs need valve adj already ? I cant imagine what else would be wrong ,motor is strong ,never had an issue . Gonna pull valve cover and check clearance and keeper. How does that compression release work ? Does it hold exhaust valve open a tiny bit until motor spins?

    It’s easier to turn over if you take out the spark plug. And then once it starts cranking leave the spark plug out and blow out the fuel that’s trapped in there.

    You need to adjust the valve clearances, if they are out of spec, you won't engage the compression release at times. When you turn the flywheel by hand like you did you will eventually engage the compression release, then the flywheel will turn more easily.The problem will come back again in the future. Had the same problem. Sometimes my mower would only start with a jump, adjusted the valves, no more problems for years.

I had earlier tried to see if the engine would turn and it wouldn’t and I got side tracked and didn’t really suspect this was the issue - I just thought the pry bar I used never had a good angle and I didn’t have the leverage I needed - I watched your video - took the cover off and it was jammed up - freed it it and I had a working mower again. Thanks again for the help.

      +Chuckles McGruber, I'm a little late to the party here but If you have Way Too Much Compression and have tried adjusting the valves, among other things. It may be the decompression unit on the Camshaft. They're a Bitch to repair, unless you have time, tools and somewhere to tear your motor off and apart. Make sure that you're a 100% sure that is the issue before taking my advice. TRUST ME !! It happens from time to time, even on Very New engines.
      Everyone makes a lemon here and there and of course, I got one of them...Good luck. Tim B.

    your looking at a worse problem then what you are saying... there is a reason your engine seized up and you need to find out why. Most likely your valves need adjusted but if you do like you say.. and then start the engine up you take the chance of further damaging your engine to the point of even blowing a hole in your case.

    My new 2015 Ariens with 19 hp Briggs won't turn the motor over all the way to start with brand new battery I charged to 100%. I can rotate the motor by hand but when it gets on the compression TDC its pretty hard to. I can just it and it will start.,When I get it to start it runs like a champ so was thinking maybe the starter is weak. Any idea's anyone?

      Adjust the valves. Lots of videos on RUclips will show you how.

      I had to rewire my starter switch where the key go's, it had a lose wire in it and now it runs. The new sylinod works good to. You can look at your to that might be the problem.

      Im not a mechanic or anything but maybe try pushing some switch onthe left side of the dash to increase the engine rpm running rate? I had the same problem, pushed the switch up a little bit, and BAM! It ran just fine. Good luck!

      could be compression. Most likely dirty fuel/air or spark.

      The volt meeter said the battery was full with12 volts. I got it started, it was a lose wire in the starter switch. and It needed the new sylinod to run.
