- We show how easy it is to diagnose and repair a Craftsman riding mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine that will not turn over. You will learn how to tell if it is an electrical problem, compression release or, in this case it's hydro locked and crank case full of gasoline. We explain why and how to switch from a NIKKI 6 Carburetor to a Walbro style Carburetor. Be sure to change your engine oil and filter if this happens to your machine.

I want to thank you so much for this video. I am a 62 y/o woman with a TB30r mower and with your help, I fixed my mower all by myself ❤
That's excellent news! 😊
I had a Cub Cadet with a Kawasaki engine that had the same issue. Replaced the carb and I stalled a shut-off and no more issue. I recommend the fuel shut-off on everybody's engines. It just seems safer.
I have the exact same mower doing the exact same thing. Thanks a million
"So sorry for your loss Steve."
Recent news for me, I felt bad for the guy, also. Classy of you, Sir!
You sir, are a gifted instructor. You know your craft, you're articulate and you explain things in a manner that is succinct and easy to understand. This is my first time viewing. I've subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you
Thank you so much for doing these videos, Mr. and Mrs. I learn so much from them! I am interested in engines and these videos help me understand them better. The teach me much, and are very useful. I would have no idea how and no confidence to repair one without them!
Thanks for the video! I don't know yet exactly which of them will fix my problem yet, but the clarity of these how-tos will guide me. Keep up the good work!
You make everybody else look like their running in slow motion!I'm gonna get one of those shirts!
LOL Thanks so much my friend.
Thank you T Bone and the Mrs. for another great one! Keep em coming, I learn something new on each and every one of them so far!
That's great! You're welcome
Great work T-Bone!
Thank you so much for making this video, exactly what I was looking for...I just fix my riding mower thanks to you.
Awesome!!!
Thank you so much I think I’ll get it now I was so lost but now I have a good idea where to start thank you
I have a craftsmen lt1000 same issue, I am waiting on my new carb in the mail. Will hopefully be working on it over the weekend 👍🏻
First video I found on "craftsman riding lawnmower won't turn over". I have the same issue. Replaced the battery and it did just as you demonstrated here. So next bit of troubleshooting will be to follow your steps. I'll be recording a video as well and gonna ref you in it. - John
I've stumbled upon your videos and have watched several of them, you're probably one of the best small engines Mechanics on RUclips! Your troubleshooting techniques are impeccable!
Wow, thank you for your kind words.
I remember when my dishwasher wouldn’t work. I cut off the cable and she had no choice but to play “kitchen”!! 😜
Even enjoy rewatching your videos
Thanks Rob
It’s always a pleasure watching you go at what you do so we’ll. Thank you both so
Much for sharing your time and knowledge with us. Always so informative Tks again.
Thank you for taking your time to leave a comment with such kind words. MrsT and I really appreciate it. Thank you William for watching and commenting.
Your support means a lot to us. Thank you 😊
Take pic with phone of carb linkage connections this will save a lot of frustration and doubt.
Thanks T-bone
Thanks for watching my friend.
Great video it teaches me what i dont know, thanks Lewis
Excellent video T Bone, love the way you explain things in your videos well done 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for the complement my friend
WE had installed a new tractor motor and had it two weeks when the fuel made it to the oil crankcase and combustion chamber. This has happened to us over the years to many times that we decided to install a fuel shutoff valve so we can turn the fuel off when the tractor is parked. Its a nice service valve when servicing the fuel filter and carb too.
Great video 👍
Thank you
Nikki Sixx ... rock on brother! 😎
Clear and concise! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
T-Bone, Nice Work! Loved the vid, very educational! I appreciate you.
Thank you
man, I wish we had guys like you up here in PA. our guys suffer from a bad case of "too obsolete to fix"...just tried to go after basics for a Kubota, and I can't even get tires or an oil filter, now! the cubby's down with a parasitic draw, the bolens is locked just like you described (and the only guy we had contact with for this won't touch it because its starter is so buried that it's too much trouble), the weed eater and a second push mower keep conking out, and we have a dead chainsaw we can't even get going. throw in the fact there's no vehicle here now capable of towing anything...
Thanks man my deer was locked up I thought it was battery then starter then silinoid because of this video I checked the oil....gas allll in it.
An interesting, and educational video. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge to help others. 😊
Thank you
Awesome video - cooters garage for sure - the simpleness of how easy he makes it look for these Briggs and Stratton engines
Thks again

Just found your channel we are from west Tenn; you have lots of good information
Awesome!! Thank you!!
Great diagnostic video at 5:00! For that reason alone I just subscribed to your channel. 👍🔧
Thanks for the sub!
Channel is coming along nicely. Keep em up
Thank you, will do.
Good video.
U are the man 🇩🇰👍👌
Great video about a common problem.
Thank you
Hey there I was just wondering what year that mower was that you are working on
nice t bone well done
Great info 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Just found ya ' - glad i did --subbed!!
First thing is a manual shut off valve and real gas
I had it brought from Oklahoma for years
Now we have it local this year
I had same issues as you, changed carb, changed oil. still hydro locked, and changed plug too. I am at a loss and not sure what to do next.
If it's truly hydro locked. Only 2 reasons, carb or fuel pump. That simple. Hydro lock is fuel on top of piston, it needs to be drained and blown out. Other common issues are mistaken for this is. Valve lash not at .004 in., cam compression release broken, weak starter, weak battery, loose ground and more. Take your time and diagnose it, check my other videos. It's all covered. Hope this helps.
Nice job T-Bone, keep'm coming brother. 👍🏼
Thanks brother, will do our best.
I have no doubts
Great job 👍
Thank you 🙏
Great video, thank you. I’ve got a Kohler Command Pro 23 that won’t start. When you turn the key the flywheel and blades turn a hair then stop. Can’t turn the flywheel by hand at all. Changed the spark plugs and no gas came out. Changed the oil and it was dark but seemed fine, wasn’t overfilled. I put a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug holes and still can’t get the flywheel to move any. Any advice? I sure would appreciate it.
you're videos are the best.
Thank you
u know what i did? i bought a complete 1992 Craftsman lawnmower with zero BS on it, i restored it and have been mowing with it for 5 years. i never have problems with it, that's how simple it is. couple mods to the drive pully and the blades. no cam to brake, no compression relief braking, no hydrostatic trans going out. and it was less money to redo an old lawnmower than to buy a new one.
Hey Carl what's wrong with this..... IT AINT got no gas in IT!!! Lmao 😂
Thanks brother for the video mate ..
You are welcome, glad you liked brother
You make it look easy 😎. Quick question. Do the 18.5 replacement brigs cams last. After replacing them? I'm working on a custom mower project. Went and got a new 08 motor ahhh. Lol. Now i worry 😂. Keep up the good job 👍
Love the shut off valve, great add on, should come that way to begin with.
I agree 👍🏻
@@RaleysSmallEngines
I automatically add a shutoff to every machine I work on. Doesn’t take much time, $ or effort and shows the customer you care about their equipment, not to mention making it easier the next time it’s in your shop.
good job t bone
Thank you my friend
Still runs like a Briggs 👍 🙂 Now if you get in some Raley's flippy flops give me a hola 📣
🤣 too funny. Thanks for watching my friend
Nice comment for Steve Wallis brother, tough times for him, real sad. You are like an Engine Doctor Sir, you make an appointment with your sick engine and Dr T-Bone will diagnose, operate and treat until its better, Mrs T will be your Nurse,,,,witttttt wooooooo. These videos are entertaining from start to finish. You make it look so easy. I cleaned out the carb on my mini bike yesterday, not tried it yet but you inspired me to do it myself. I only had one brass tube looking thing left over 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the first time.
Yes it's very sad, I think @stevewallis is a great guy. Thanks so much for the compliment brother. That is awesome, you should film working on that carburetor. I'm sure you will get her going.
@@RaleysSmallEngines She’s a runner! 3rd kick
Heck Yeah!!
Good tech.. good stuff man
Thank you
I know the carb was bad and it fixed the problem when you changed it. But what made the first carb bad to begin with? Is the first carb repairable? What failed on the first one if you had to guess? Thanks, great video.
Yes, repairable. Float valve leaking.
Seen your video by just sheer dumb luck and you were dealing with the exact mower with the exact issue's . I found myself thinking god I wish that guy lived close id bring my headaches to you and pay for the repairs gladly . I bet you can build a hell of a go kart motor . Anyways I'm going to order the stuff to do the job myself today . But thanks for the great video I hope it works out for me
😆 glad you liked it, hope it helps you out my friend
@@RaleysSmallEngines god me too my yard is looking terrible and my wife is fixing to kick me out till I get the lawn mowed .I weighed my options and I don't think I can replace her so I got to cut the grass ...I did weigh my options though first lol have a great day
This issue should be easily diagnosed before you even attempt to start a small engine. As part of your starting procedure you should always pull your dip stick to check the oil.
That’s a really good point - to always smell the dipstick for fuel. Of course at 5:00 T-Bone covers a range of diagnostics which make this video well worth watching.
Thank you
...enjoyed the video T-Bone....as usual, great diagnosis and repair.....just curious, do you think the problem with the old carb was
a stuck solenoid valve or a float valve that allowed gas into the cylinder?....🙂
Thank you. A stuck solenoid will NOT cause a fuel leak. The problem is, in this case needle and seat along with an O-ring on the plastic piece below the seat. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
Briggs engines are notorious fro cam shaft warping...mine did and I find thousands of others have also,
Oh yeah thanks t bone
You are welcome my friend glad you liked it
I usually set valves on every mower now, no matter what the other problem are , it’s easy and fast to do
I use Hipi carb
I was just thinking about doing the same.
Where's the oil filter I have a very Similar tractor and I can't find the Oil filter is there one?
Good job
Thank you
I have the same thing happened to me I diagnosed it 3 minutes I checked the oil had gas in it right there it is change the oil cleaned out the cylinder put some starter fluid in it started it up run like a bear and now I turn the gas off when I'm not using it and let the carburetor empty before I start
I had the same problem about a week ago I smell gas everywhere I thought I had a leak my lawn mower will not start just barely turn over I put a charger on overnight next morning the same thing I checked the oil in it and gas came pouring out the oil stick change oil oil filter repair the carburetor I put inline shutoff valve on the gas line problem solved Thank You For You video
Awesome, glad it helped
Does this diagnosis apply to a hustler zero turn Kawasaki engine?
I can't seem to find that Briggs OEM 594593 Carburetor you replaced the Nikki with.. Can you give me any other info to find it? Thanks..
Look on Amazon I just looked one up for $103
Same parts for the LT1000?
Hey T-Bone, where did you get the oil extractor pump?
I made it out of PVC. I have two videos on it that shows some funny fails in the making. Check them out if you get a chance.
I got that same click click!! 14.5 Brigs. New battery and new starter. Guess it wasn't the starter or solinoid. Next thing see if it fluid locked. It turns hard like yours. I. Thought it was getting wore out by a knock at low speed. But when at higher rpm you barely hear it.
What oil should i use 5w30?
10w30w
Briggs 18 horse piston not moving cranks over fine any idea what the problem is
Does anyone happen to know the size of the front rims on this tractor
Tbone, do you find that the majority of engine problems are fixable or does it vary by degree of damage. In my short tenure of small engine repairs (former class A diesel mechanic), ive found the majority of issues are small and just created from poor maintenance, poor fuel choice and in some cases just flat out stupidity?? have certainly learned more about small engine maintenance and repairs just watching your videos.
The parts diagram from Briggs & Stratton shows both carburetors on the expanded diagram. So if I understand you correctly, either type will work and the walbro is the prefer?
The old carburetor number is superceded to a new number which is Walbro style. Don't do the Nikki style, they are junk in my opinion.
@@RaleysSmallEngines thank you. When I called an online parts company, they couldn't give me an answer. I just got the new carburetor today and will double check the part number hopefully I got the right one. Thanks for the clarity of this video
True. Can’t trust the Nikki carbs so put a cut of eather way you go
Hi I have an 18.5hp Briggs that the engine will turn a little and stop at the compression stroke. I can help it past the compression stroke and it then has enough momentum to start. Does that sound like the compression release is not adjusted correctly? On a different video you found pieces of timing gear in the oil would an engine run at all with pices missing like that?
Adjust the valves to .004
@@RaleysSmallEngines I will do that thank you.
Another question I have is the mower I have is a Craftsman 42” deck with a 6 speed transmission that is extremely hard to shift speeds or go in to reverse. It kinda helps to rock the mower. Any advice that can make it shift smoother?
Thanks I’m advance
I had that problem, gas in the oil...it was a bad gas shut off solenoid in the bottom of the carburetor bowl.
As soon as he tastes the dip stick and said up its 50/50 10w30 or 5w30 I was like yea this mf on point 😂😂😂
🤣 🤣
I do the spark plug test if it turns over freely but if I put it the spark plug back in that I know it's the camshaft
I have a Briggs and Stratton 23 on a Snapper and it seemed like it was dead because it wouldn't even click or anything, finally I got down and wiggled the clutch/ brake switch and it fired up, well while it was running it just completely shut off and won't do anything. So I ordered and new brake/clutch switch and just to be safe a new seat switch as well and put them on. Unfortunately neither one did anything and it won't turn over or click or anything. I even replaced the spark plug. Please any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am assuming it is an electronic issue because it won't do anything.
Check out my Just Clicks video. It explains a lot
@@RaleysSmallEngines Thank you bud!
Hello! I have a riding mower with Briggs EX1900 intek. Weird thing. I’ve adjusted both valves to .004 It will turn over and hesitate at compression, then crank. If I turn it off and try to crank again, seems the battery doesn’t have enough power. Battery bolts show 12v. Oddly enough, if I turn flywheel by hand to the compression point and then just passed there, the engine cranks fine. Is it bad to continue turning the flywheel by hand to get it cranked? Will that damage anything?
It will not damage it. Make sure your battery terminal bolts are tight also.
Alright T Bone (my fathers nickname was T Bone. Also hound dog) but any hoo please help me out. I can’t find an answer anywhere and I’m in too deep to give up now.
So my fly wheel was exactly like this when I reinstalled the deck after replacing the deck belt.
When I take the deck off it starts. When I out the deck back on it won’t turn. What might I have done wrong? Please help me 🙏
Just a quick one T-Bone, why didn’t you just repair the original carb? It’s not a criticism, just a matter of interest. Also, what type is your oil extraction pump, I love that. Keep up the great work Buddy. 👍🇬🇧🔧
Those carburetors will fail again because the whole inside is plastic. That pump is home made from pvc, I have two videos on making it. Check them out if you get a chance. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
@@RaleysSmallEngines Answered both my questions!
Hey chief just got one more today it's Mercury.
16.5ohv it turns to a certain point and stops the oil is good just change it a few minutes ago. Before that I removed the sparkplug and gas poured out but the dipstick didn't smell of gas..
And when it stops it's takes both hands to turn it than it frees up and turns until it hits it once more. and then I have to turn it over with my hands once more.
.
.
I mowed with it earlier today but now I have this issue.
.
Please advise.
Thank you kindly 😊
Just a guess on my part. I think when you were able to force the engine to turn it forced gas out the exhaust, then it would turn over easy enough. Still in my opinion it would be the carburetor. A stuck open needle and seat would cause the problem you're having. Gas in the cylinder, not necessarily in the oil.
I hope this helps, good luck
@@bertgrau3934 ok thank you I'll check it out
I forgot to step on the clutch before starting my Troy Bilt Pony mower. Now it won’t start. It had turned on just a minute ago without any issues when I stepped on the clutch. The engine does not crank, but just a click that I can hear from the starter solenoid when trying to start it. The engine fan barely spins when turning it on, but I was able to rotate it when I took the cover off the engine. Spark plug did not have much carbon build up & just did an oil change recently. Any suggestions?
Make sure battery cables are tight and corrosion free. Check the oil level, if it's over filled and smells like gas then it's hydro locked, check for dirt at clutch/brake safety switch. Good luck!
@@Mrs.T-bone it was a bad battery. The battery tested ~11.59 volts or nearly 12 volts. I didn’t know a good battery should be over 12 volts. Thank you.
is there an oil tasting video? How do I develop a palate to diagnose the oil content?
🤣 🤣
What state are in
New carburetor and new spark plug
I have a mower that hesitates turnin over the first revolution, I don't think this is the problem though. it's a v twin that I believe has a compression release lobe on the camshaft and I've read about those having trouble
Look at the video I posted last Friday. Hope it helps.
Pull...the plug see if gas filled up cylinder.
Yes we did in the video
@RaleysSmallEngines I said this before video was finished!!
@@jeff0nyschuk670 gotcha brother, sorry hard to respond to so so many comments. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend.
I used to work on these,,garbage cans for a living,,Then I got smart and gave it up..92% of it is garbage.
Jeez 8mo ago and its like my poulan pro from 2005? Is like like old new stock, thing is in mint condition for being even 5 yrs old at that - and the plug even looks original lol
Another briggs and scrappin😂
Check drive belt I had one like that drive belt stuck to pulley pulled off motor turns over
It was hydrologized that's all gotten one time friend of my grandpa's tried to turn that we're to push the gas out of the cylinder it won't be did art and plug more art and caught the cats on fire and headed up a 3rd of his Burns over 900% of his body so it'll always be mindful and just dealt people to watch out for that when they're doing that😅😅
Why do all Briggs engines need dip stick wiped off and put back in to check oil level? Looking at it first pullout will always be overfull
Hmmm. It is always good practice to remove the dip stick, wipe it off and then check. Just habit for me. Sorry I don't have a good answer for ya my friend.
Do customers care about it coming back clean and detailed or is that mostly for flipping mowers to sell?
If they bring it dirty they get it back dirty lol. We don't flip mowers. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
@@RaleysSmallEngines thanks for the response. I was watching this video because I have a Cub cadet that is burned out two starters and wondering if based on your test it is the valves out of spec. I'll have to watch that video and see how to adjust it. The electrical system is fine and I have done corrosion prevention and all the contacts and made sure the grounds are all clean. Thanks for the great and clear content.
@@DefensorFortis yes check out our video on valve adjustment and the camshaft video. They will explain a lot.
Does this damn thing have a fuel pump on it? My clear fuel filter hardly has any fuel in it. I have done everything i can think of New Carb, New Coil, New plug, Adjusted valves to spec. It runs pretty good at idle for a minute or two then starts cutting out and dies. When i increase the throttle to normal it cuts out and dies?!?
Just found you on RUclips a subscribe to your Channel I work on small engines also about 16 years of it😢 and don't have any helpers I can tell you know exactly what you doing I order from partstree a lot to I don't fool with any aftermarket carburetor either I do have one question I live in South Georgia close to the Florida line the shops here or charging 85 to 105 8 hour I don't have to charge that much no overhead just wondering what kind of prices lawn mower repair shocks are charging up there?
We charge $88 per hour. Not sure what other shops charge
@@RaleysSmallEngines thanks for your information keep sending us those videos they are very educational and we all love them
I’m keeping count of how many engines Nikki carbs destroy every year at shop
Why do you need a shut off valve for the fuel line, when the Carb has a solenoid shut of valve on it ?
The solenoid only blocks of the main jet, and won't stop fuel if the needle and seat leaks. The shut off valve will prevent flooding in case the needle and seat fails.
Fuel locked
