This helped me so much Im 13 and was left to do the lawn and it broke. I was able to start it up by myself and get it done. Then I got the part and installed it myself.
I’d give this 1000 likes if I could. This saved me so much time and money. My solenoid was bad and I can buy one one Amazon for about 15$ and easily install it. I was thinking of loading up my John Deere and dropping it off at a repair shop and getting ripped off but this video saved me. Thanks for sharing this video with us. Awesome job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hi Don from Australia My D110 was doing the clicking thing last weekend, this weekend I planed to have a look to see what the cause is so this video was very timely. Your videos have helped me a lot over the years so thank you for past help and future help.
This was tremendously helpful. I'll admit I have a very low mechanical knowledge base and your method of bypassing the solenoid was brilliant! Thank you.
Thanks for the instruction! Saved me a ton of time and money. I quickly replaced the solenoid and immediately bragged to my wife how resourceful I was. LOL
Great information! I'm not good at working on lawnmowers, but after watching this video I installed the solenoid in ten minutes with no problems. Awesome video, Thank you!
I was getting nothing from my John Deere so I had the battery tested and it was bad, it was an old battery. Put the new one in and still nothing. Found your video and paused it to go check my solenoid and that was it!!! Great video!!! Thank you for your content, I’m a subscriber now 👍
Great video, thank you for posting. I had exactly these symptoms with the very same lawn mower about three years ago. Your seven minute video at that time would have saved me several hours of try this and try that ......
Great video. I have never done this before, but you explained it, so well, I figured why not givebit a try. At first, I thought it was the starter. Thank God I saw this first and didn't spend money unnecessary. The solenoid cost me $24 at my local John Deere store. It took me all of 30 mins to remove and install the new one. (My once again first time) Once finished, Jet (my mowers name) cranked right on up . What a blessing. I so glad i didnt have to pay John Deere to do this for me. Thanks again. You have a new subscriber.
Don you were spot on, this was the first thing I tested and that is the problem. I did some other test to make sure but you saved me a lot of time as the solenoid would not have been on my radar because of the clicking. thank you.
@@jhans3278 fact: it’s the amps that hurt you, spark plug produces 1,000 bolts but no amperage and you’ll be perfectly fine. But if you have 48v with decent amps that’ll suck
nice video thanks. I had a devil of a time with my JD x320 same situation clicking and not starting. However on my machine as I am sure you know, the solenoid is bolted onto the starter and also moves the bendix gear of the starter to the flywheel..It would only fail to start intermittently (when my brother in law was borrowing of course). First I replaced just the solenoid and it was fine for awhile but then back to its old tricks. So then I did what I should have done in the first place, replaced the entire starter, (which comes with a new solenoid already installed), and presto now it starts every time. I really enjoy your channel and watch everything, have learned a lot, much appreciated,
Want to thank you for diagnosing my problem. Cleaned my ground wire at the engine block, battery was charged but it would click sometimes 30 times or more before it started. I was ready to replace the starter. Went down and jumped the terminals and mine started!!!!
Thank you Donyboy for an excellent video on how to bypass the solenoid to determine if the problem was the solenoid or the battery or the starter. You are an excellent teacher and mechanic.
Sir, ❤ thank you!! My husband passed away last year, taking care of my home alone is overwhelming and expensive. He left me his barely used John Deere mower. I wasn’t thrilled but it beats pulling on a lawnmower starter rope. I’m 65yrs old. I’m a retired RN and used to be pretty strong but unless I begin weight training, my strength will no increase. So, I have never done engine work, pretty intimidating actually but this video and all of your positive information and ideas have given me pause to go down that path of learning. The solenoid on the tractor was dead. You have no idea what a joy and relief to have fixed the green machine myself!! Thank you so much, you have blessed a widow. You will have an extra measure of help from above for your generous service, my dear husband has rallied other heavenly beings to surround you with blessings for providing for his devoted wife. You always have the video I need when I'm about to make an expensive mistake. Solenoid goes for about $22 US and a starter lists in the $500 to $700 range. This vid did the trick! Thanks for all the work you have been putting into these videos for I don't know how many years.
Good video and information. I actually did the same thing to bypass a bad ignition switch on my 2004 Honda 750 Shadow Aero motorcycle. Saved me from being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Thanks again Don for sharing.
I usually pull the solenoid apart and clean the heavy copper contacts. The solenoid in your video sounds good indicating the coil is in good condition.
@@donyboy73 Ok, replaced solenoid and still one click won't start. I still can "screwdriver" start it. Is there like a normal "kill switch" that I could wire between the two positive connections? My solenoid looks about the size and shape of yours. (Allis Chalmers AC130 42" 2690812) Thanks!
Perfect explanation regarding the components and how to test them, my one just start doing this clicking, the starter and battery been tested already, but i been stuck on the next step and the next step is Solenoid. Thank you for this training:))
Donyboy, I'm going thru this same symptom on a Husqvarna Zero Turn. I've already swapped out the solenoid twice already and it seems that with each new solenoid it only fires up one time. I added a new starter also and a new switch. Even though the old one was clicking when I had benched tested it. I've not taken a screwdriver across the poles yet cause I was hoping to see a bad wire or something. I started watching your channel years ago and am never disappointed at your content.
Thank you for the video. I recently snatched up an old JD rider with the Kawasaki engine. The solenoid is attached to the starter like the old GM products. I cleaned ALL of the battery connections and applied a bit of electrical grease and voila. No parts replaced at all. Probably going to need a solenoid replacement but I wanted to get her going and see what other surprises I’m in for
Your video is very clear and right to the point. Unfortunately, I replaced the solenoid yesterday and it wasn't the problem. I've recently done most of a regular service on it; new air filter, fuel filter, & Champion spark plugs. It has run well since the service was completed. I have the oil filter "Re-plumbing Kit" and I'll install it in the course of an oil change. E-Z... what a waste of money!! I have a John Deere E180 that usually runs every time with no problems. Now, it acts like there's a safety interlock open; Seat Switch, Brake Switch, PTO Engaged Switch. When I turn the key to the Start position there's nothing. No Click. This thing is starting to put a dent in my sense of humor! 😏 Good Ideas would be welcome... Thank you...
I just touched a screwdriver to a live engine part. That is a big deal for me! Sending you a million likes. You just saved me a weeks worth of time getting this to the shop and a couple hundred bucks! Thank you for this!
I just got another free lawn tractor with a seized engine that once again is the coil rusted to the flywheel. This video is exactly what I need as someone strip some electrical components so I'm stuck.
I used to have a few older Ford cars and trucks, and very often the same problem would occur. You shut the car down, then come back to hear that clicking. The starter solenoid would be mounted on the right front inner fender under the hood. You could short across it to start your car, but, ultimately replacing the solenoid would have to be replaced. I learned to keep a couple extras on board. Not the same thing, but Chrysler cars had a resistor mounted on the firewall. When it failed, no start. So again, when I had any Chrysler made car, Dodge, Plymouths, and of course Chrysler, I kept a few resistors on board. Good vid.👍
Thanks dude put a new battery in no click. Tried what you told me and it didn’t turn over so I’m guessing it’s the starter ! Thanks . I’ll be putting a new one in and hopefully my solenoid isn’t messed up too lol
Ok. Your screwdriver trick helped a lot. I just tried it and it tried to start. So it’s NOT the starter. The problem is, the Seluloid is brand new that I just put on there straight from the john deere shop. So both should be good but I still can’t get it to start. The fuse is good, I replaced the sparkplug and checked the brake button and the seat safety
I maintain a fleet of 20 truck mounted mosquito foggers that have Vanguard engines. I run into this ALL THE TIME. The issue is cheap starter relays. Had a John deere once that I thought had a bad solenoid because it was clicking and would sometimes crank. Replaced the solenoid and starter and it still did it. Turns out the ignition switch was failing, and it wasn't passing enough current to properly operate the solenoid. New switch cured the issue for good.
Thanks this was very informative. I am a widow so panic set in when my trustee LA145 would not start. Charged battery lights work numbers come up on dash but still no start. Tomorrow I will try and bypass solenoid and hope she goes. 14yrs old now. Can I run her without solenoid until I get a new one. Thanks Robyn
Gosh Dony I wish I had this last year......I have a 2005 John Deere LT133 and I had several issues and I think I still have a couple. But I replaced the solenoid and that definitely helped but also the Brake/clutch pedal switch which you showed us last year and the lift deck switch were also two checks. If I pull back on the deck lift lower bar thing that also has one of the gray safety switches under the body. I found nothing would happen when I turned the key and then if I pulled the deck lift bar as far towards as I could it would start. SO I know I have to replace the switch also. That might be a help for JD owners as well.
Ah very nice and good tip. I already knew what the problem was when you tried starting it... this used to be a problem on some cars back in the day and they made that exact same sound. Good video and thank you for this!
Thank you for this video in particular, but I subscribed because of how well you explain things and I have a JD lawn tractor. Trying to diagnose a starter issue. Liked and subbed!
Those Solenoid terminals were rusted and likely high resistance connections. Sometimes Cleaning them and other terminals will cure the problem I have found.
Once again, DonyBoy taught me something! Quick question for anyone, especially Canadian folks, where do you buy your parts online? I have to replace my starter on my D140, as the bendix doesn't move up properly anymore... even after proper lubrification.
Great video Don, with very good info. As for tractor starting when not sitting on the seat? My Cub, I have to sit and still engage the brake even more🤷🤔🐺🇺🇸
Excellent advice! I had a similar clicking/non-start on my Cub Cadet yesterday. It had been running but I turned it off in my back acre for a few minutes. When I tried starting it.....it clicked like your example. I checked the battery......12.5v....good, checked for positive charge to the starter when key was engaged.....power. I then looked at the hour meter on the dash while turning the key and noticed it spelled out "Low Oil Pressure". I checked the oil level and it was down to the low mark and sitting on a slight incline. I leveled it up and added oil until full. Started right up! Possibly the low oil level plus the incline set off a safety feature I am not aware of.
I have a Cub Cadet XT1 that wouldn't restart when the engine was hot. When it cooled off, it would eventually start. I doubt if the oil pressure would be the cause of an electrical problem. I replaced the starter after only 2 years, but now it's starting to do the same thing. I just keep the tractor running all the time until I'm finished cutting the grass until I can determine if maybe I should replace the solenoid or not.
@@jpozenel I agree. I am not convinced about the oil pressure, but after checking the wiring.....all seemed good. Will have to be vigilant and try to determine a cause. Good luck with your XT1.
Probably save money by buying a universal solenoid at most small engine repair shops or Amazon because the mower dealers (John Deere) will charge way too much.
Your video explained clearly on how to begin finding out what5 the problems may be. I like your step-by-step method. Unable to purchase a Kohler Pro Command solenoid. No longer made and is a high price item IF you can find it. Are the solenoids sold on Amazon good or low quality?
To test the starter by connecting the starting directly to the battery, do you have to do anything else for it to crank, like put the parking break on or key in or anything?

Good practice, however the battery is likely 12 volts and not high enough voltage to cause injury. When it gets about 48 volts and higher, be careful.

This was a great video - clear and simple, Thankyou
Probably save money by buying a universal solenoid at most small engine repair shops or Amazon because the mower dealers (John Deere) will charge way too much.
Great video. Thank You!
Thanks Dony! Great tips! 👍👍.
Your video explained clearly on how to begin finding out what5 the problems may be. I like your step-by-step method. Unable to purchase a Kohler Pro Command solenoid. No longer made and is a high price item IF you can find it. Are the solenoids sold on Amazon good or low quality?
Great video as always. Thankyou Sir.
Good information 😊 thanks
Thank you. Will rewatch
To test the starter by connecting the starting directly to the battery, do you have to do anything else for it to crank, like put the parking break on or key in or anything?
