Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

What about when I bump something in the yard like a tree stump? It dies or going down a small hill it likes to die?
Very informative and explained well!
Ok look ru S
This is hands down, one of the most helpful videos ever. Very thorough and easy to follow.
have a great weekend!
@@donyboy73 I'm thinking about doing this type of work on the side. What advice would you give to someone who has little knowledge of this type of work but is willing to learn.
@@abelgarcia5718 watch as many videos as you can
What a ringing endorsement. Says a lot about both of you! Hats Off!
Man. I just logged in to say THANK YOU. The secret small screen!! I replaced the carb on my mower because nobody could figure out what was wrong. It worked for a while, and started to surge again. Same issue, nobody knew what was wrong. Today after watching this, I checked the screen and it was packed with debris. Cleaned it out, and now it runs perfectly. Saved me so much stress/trouble. Thank you buddy.
Thanks for editing. I know it's time consuming but whoever does your editing is doing a great job!
Efficient, knowledgeable, great clear camera angles and sound! You're GOOD at this.
I film and edit all myself
Don, I am in awe of your overall knowledge and your pleasant style of teaching. Great fix!
You're my favorite small engine repair guy. No nonsense advice, to the point, great information.
You're the best...... thanks.
thanks Joe!
I bought two carburetors for my snowblower before I seen your video last winter thank you.
This is hands down the best video on MTD carb repair. Taking that fuel screen out has fixed a problem that I nor 3 seperate mechanics could fix. Thank you so much!
They must sell many carbs this way. The screen dont even show on the parts list. Thanks don. Great job
If you dipped the carb in a cleaner..and started spraying it out..it seems that if you hit the right port you could blow the dirt off the screen and it could still leave the plastic fuel line input adaptor, the way it came in
By the amount subs, you've saved us hundreds of thousands Don!! One of the best channels on RUclips! Keep up the amazing work Dony, thanks for everything you do for us!
thanks!
Thank you Don for being such a good ... Canadian ! Many small engine repair shops stiff you with costly bills. Honesty is always best.
Right on
hi folks Paul from New Zealand , I work as a small engine mechanic here down under. As a MTD service dealer we are seeing now , more of these "POWERMORE" engines on there rider mowers , Thanks Don , i will now be checking these little screens for pluging. Didnt know they were there ! cheeky tricky prickly things me thinks
Looks like they got away from Briggs engines…. Went to the Honda knock off route!
greetings from Canada Paul!
BET they are CHI NA motors
@@REVNUMANEWBERN what isn't nowadays? lol
Another beautiful diagnosis and repair by the master "doctor".
I Always check Chinese Carbs for this sneaky filter since you first mentioned it. Thanks Don!!
I’ve learned so much from your videos. Such a great channel!
What an you say about a top-notch mechanic who shares his incredible knowledge and experience with people on his repair videos. AWESOME JOB DONY. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you doctor I feel much better now. Straight talk, useful and no blah blah. ... refreshing and useful
Thank you so much for all the videos you’ve made, they’ve helped so many of us, so many people you probably don’t realize and have no way to quantify.
Thanks Edward
A million thank for this upload. I was just about to arrange some kind of transportation of our tractor (Cub Cadet) to a mechanic as despite much trying, I just couldn’t get the surging/dying fixed. Gave RUclips one last try before sending it of, found this video and all fine now! You just saved us a lot of trouble and some money too! Now we even have time left to trim the lawn before summer is over. Big thanks from Sweden!!
Whenever I have a small engine problem,I always go to Your channel for a clear resolution to my problem, thanks!
The feeling never gets old of nailing the problem. Great job and info..
Terrific video Don! After finding you a few years ago, I've gone back and watched them all. I watched your previous video on this screen but this one is a great reminder. Kind of like the difference between learning about it in class and actually applying the process. Thanks so much, Bill.
Love All Your Videos Don I Watched All Of Them Since The The First One .Sometimes I Watch The Older Ones Again. Great Information .
thanks Stephen
I have an MTD Ride on mower in Australia and my mower was doing the search thing when warm and stalling. So I had pulled the drain plug blot on the bottom of the bowl and the fuel was clean and I was all most at the stage of taking it to get looked at by MTD Service Center and found your video showing that there is a little screen on the back side of the fuel inlet at was not on any diagrams.
thank you so much I cleaned this out and my mower is running like a dream again.
Once again great video Don. The first issue I saw was it’s a “yardworks”. I think I’m safe to say this brand keeps me in a job
My dad has the exact same tractor with the exact same problem disconnected the fuel line after the filter removed the carburetter drain screw and blew air in the hole it removes the crap in the fuel screen put the same filter as you put been working perfect ever since
I bought some of those paper filters for my machines but was not sure about using them as they are supposed to be for fuel pump engines. Good to know. Eric.
Thank you for sharing this diagnostic procedure. ❤️🇨🇦
Thank you so much I followed the routine you showed in this video, and I had the exact same issue with the fuel inlet being plugged at the screen. You saved my butt, right now is the height of growing season, and all the local shops are taking months to turn around repair jobs. I knew I would have to do this repair myself in order to keep the grass at bay. Thanks for keeping us going!
Great video, definitely something to remember when looking for a fuel related problem.
again a perfect fix from the master !!!
Good advice on these lawn mowers they are our future and I like those kind of fuel filters with the cardboard and them a lot better than the screen ones I got those filters on my gravity-feed carburetors
You really are the Small Engine Doctor! Great information.
As always very very informative! Mr Don you always produce such extremely high quality videos with exceptional clarity! Thank you sir.
Excellent explanation of your process, as always. You have talked about those screens before, but I had forgotten about them. Now I will be on the lookout. Thanks for the great knowledge you share!
As always a great job. I do this as a hobby and enjoy your videos. They are very helpful. Thanks Donyboy!
G'day, Don! Great job! Enjoyed the video! By the way... You are absolutely right by replacing the 'original fuel filter', with a New Oregon Fuel Filter (part: 07-103). Thank you very much!
Cheers! 😊🛠✌🏻❤️
I was fixing a generator for a friend and I couldn't wrap my head around why it wouldn't stay on after cleaning the carburetor, fuel tank, oil, etc. completely. I had NO idea that this little screen existed. I ended up replacing the carburetor and it worked right away. Now that I know about this screen from your video, I BET it was that screen causing it not to stay on. Anyways, he's happy I got it working after 7 months of sitting lol. Subscribed! 🤘🏼
Excellent video!!! Thank You for sharing your knowledge and information
Love the channel! Love your systematic teaching approach. Thx for sharing.
A credit to his profession!!! Kudos!
Thanks! This thing has dealt me nothing but grief until your video!! God bless ya brother
This is the same MTD engine that is in my Cub Cadet CC30H Riding Mower. I was having the same problems and this tutorial was perfect. Provided instruction that I could not get from Cub Cadet or local repair shops. Still can't get valve clearance specs from anybody.
That was a very informing video thank you very much. I did not know about that screen
Very good video. Close up and telling what and how to take out and put back on
Don't own one of these babies but just stopped by for support and thank you guy for this channel..
thanks
best site on the web for small engine tips. thank you !
My Cub Cadet rider was running fine for the first few minutes and then acting like it was running out of gas before dying completely. New spark plug, air cleaner, and fuel filter didn't help. Watched this video and pulled the carb. The little screen was clogged. Removed the screen, put it back together, and it runs like new again. Can't thank you enough. Probably saved me couple hundred dollars if I would have taken it to a shop.
You are very knowledgeable and concise with your presentations. I am one of your followers. You are a Master mechanic with yard machines!
Hi Don you are absolutely right to fit a paper filter in place of the basic screen filter. A friend of mine had a mower with a Honda GCV160 engine and the carb jets kept getting blocked with dirt. I fitted a paper filter the same as the one you put on the tractor and it completely solved the problem and ran perfectly for many years. The paper filters seem to work fine on gravity-fed engines even when the fuel tank is only just above the carb like on the Honda engine.
ANOTHER, detailed, quick 1st class repair & production !
thanks Numa!
Enjoyed your video, and your advise was spot on for the little screen filter. My screen filter was almost pugged solid. Followed your advise and completed the repair. I could not "bend" the motor shroud, so I drilled a 5/8 hole for easy access. A little putty held the bolt in my socket to install the forward bolt. I will put a plug in the hole. Brian
Very helpful for fixing my lawn tractor thanks heaps
Best small engine repair videos I’ve seen
Great video. Thank you. After a lot of chasing the wrong thing. That was exactly what was wrong with mine. Thanks again!
I have the exact same lawn tractor and have the same issue. You just saved me a lot of trouble. Thank you very much for your video.
Awsome frustration preventer!! Thanks dony!!
Thanks don, you have always helped me from the first video till now, look forward to your next one.👍👍👍
Thanks for another great informative video, I put the same fuel filter as the one you did in a MTD YARDMAN and it has worked well.!!!
Great info! Thanks! every small engine job presents a new puzzle to solve, nice to know alternative solutions to common problems like the surging issue.
I thank you for another learning experience.
Finally someone did a video on the mower I have I bought this craftsman riding mower in 2014 with a MTD motor. It ran good the first year then after that it wouldn’t run worth a crap anymore. So it’s been sitting for a while so now I have the drive to attack this carb and finally fix this thing for good thanks to your video.
Wow now that's a great tip. I did not know about that little screen. Thanks for showing us how to fix it.Good day sir!
Don, you gave me confidence that I can do it.Lets see hoe I can do it on my Briggs & Stratton riding lawn mower 18 hp..thank you for teaching how to fix issues with tractor...Bless you with health and wealth..!
Excellent diagnosis!!!!!!!!
Thank you Dan great video
I use that same filter in my lawn tractors that don't have fuel pumps and no issues with fuel flow
Great video , you have me the answer to my engine issue. God bless.
Excellent video again! All the easy diagnostics carefully explained. Such a great channel.
Thank you very much!
Really excellent vid, Don.
I have a 382cc Powermore on my TB30R. It has never given me a problem, but it if it ever has this surging problem, I now know exactly what the culprit will be.
Thank you! 👍
Rock solid camera work! 95% of the time it’s fuel related issues
Very well done ! Don
Thank you , you are a life saver. Best video.
Changed head gaskett and drive belt via your channels. Thanks for any further help u can provide..
Always good information, thanks
Thank you Don. Have a great weekend!
thanks Andy
Nice work.
Great stuff as always Dony !
Wow can't believe this i have been struggling with this same problem thanks for the info
Awesome..going to check my one for that filter..thanks great vid..
Awesome step-by-step diagnosis and repair Don! The small, filter screen in the carb strikes again! That would drive me nuts if that was to happen to me, if I had to work on my own equipment, and not know about it. Thanks so much for sharing. Again, awesome!!!
you're welcome Carl
Great video. Very helpful.
You've made many viewers happy to know that little screen should be deleted.
Dealerships might not be so happy that they've lost many engineered to fail service profits.
But right is right & wrong is wrong. Like Ronald Reagan once said...
'Don't be afraid to see what you see.'' Obligements for letting us see!!
Thanks for the tips. As always be safe. Peace
Great fix Don. I remember your older video about those screens. I was thinking about that when you were checking it out. Another thing that could help is when fueling, put a paper coffee filter in a funnel and filter the fuel.
Lol..tell that to the 12 y.o. kid when hes in charge of the yard..he will never do the coffee filter trick, even if you could get him to cut the grass without telling him 6 times
Inline filter that's accessible for regular checking and replacement would help too
Good one Don - thanks for sharing
You're the " Mechanic Angel" !!
Great video . Super, super helpful .You do a great job
Great job as usual.
Step-by-step with explanations as to what and why. You can't ask for better than that. That little screen on 2 cycles like you mentioned is a PITA if you don't know it exists, and I didn't know there was one on my Crafts riding mower/kohler engine. I am going to go look for it . Thank You!!
Wow man you save my money
Great fix ! Thanks 🎉
Great video and take down. Thank you.
Another great lesson.
I am a 0 y/o lady and times like this makes me miss my dad. I have a Toro zero turn Time cutter that runs 10 minutes and dies, I am sure it is the gas as it happened last year and the guy charged me $80 bucks just to transport to shop. I changed out the gas filter and no way I can take that carburetor off and put it back correctly. Maybe take the gas bowl off bottom and blow out jet????
0 year old
Excellent video Donny, nice job !!
Nice. Thank you.
Thanks Sir Don This will work and help me out Thanks again!!!!
Thanks so much for this video and explanation of the screen on the fuel intake into the carb. I had tried twice to fix a problem with my tractor dying by cleaning my carb but was not aware of the screen. Took it apart again and blew some compressed air through the fuel intake and out came a bunch of dirt that was blocking/restricting the fuel flow. Not sure why they put this screen there. Also it seems the ubiquitous little red fuel filters that are used on many small engines are not very good. It should have caught the dirt before it got to the carb but it did not. It would have been an easy fix if it had and it was the first thing I checked. I replaced it with a clear paper filter per your recommendation. I am also going to put a fuel shut off valve on the fuel line.
Thanks Don..great info!
Cheers Eric 💈 from Orillia
Hi Don. I work on power equipment, here at my home in New Hampshire. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.
thanks Rick, if you get a lawn tractor with Powermore engine check that screen!
