- Fix a Blown Head Gasket & Adjust Valves On A Lawn Tractor With OHV Engine
In this video I show you how to properly replace the head gasket on a single cylinder OHV (over head valve) Briggs & Stratton lawn tractor engine. You may need a new gasket if your engine smokes a lot and burns excessive amounts of oil like in the video in the link below.

Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

For your information, this video is still helping out. Just replaced the header, exhaust, and valve cover gaskets on my Craftsman YTS 3000 with this video alone as a reference. Thanks and keep doing what you do!
Ivé seen another one of your videos regarding head gaskets on the OHV engines and since then i have replaced about 20 of them with succes..
I have som info to make the job a bit easier:
1: The two pins in the block that supports the gasket are easy to take out, which makes the sanding easier.
2: I find it easy to use one of those cork sanding blocks and some fine sand paper to get an even surface.
3: The intak push-rod tend to wear on that part that, where it runs through the guide in the head. Simply reverse the rod and you do not have to worry about replacing the rod in the near future.
Your videos are my bible, Dony.
Have a great day.
LKV thanks
Don: Because you edit, and spend much of the time in tight and focused closeup, your videos pack more information per minute than those of many other well meaning video makers.. I also enjoyed some of the little Canadian touches like the Mastercraft wrenches. Many thanks for your efforts and keep up the good work.
Clark Hill thanks Clark
Another high quality demo video. A lot of steps and do appreciate 🙏 the depth of explanation and helpful tips. Great tutorial😀
Thank's , easy to follow instructions. Made it fun. I think you may find it interesting , I am seventy , retired , the only experience I have is when a teenager I had to work on my old cars to make them run.Took me three times longer because the heat here in Virginia this time of year, had to work first thing in morning 6am-9am then 6pm to about 7:30 because the sun shined into my shed .The only real problems where my fault , over the last few years my grandsons have been helping out Pa-Paw and I did not notice no maintenance was being done, so everything needed replacement ,fuel filter and gas line (twisted off in my hands) ,air filter (embarrassing bad) and so on !!
I think the one thing that made me try and that was when you told someone "Its not rocket science " ! Thank you again . William
Hi, I know this is an older video, but it sent me in the right direction. I have a ten year old 17.5 HP Briggs on a Snapper mower, that was burning blue smelly smoke. My suspicions were correct; the head gasket was blown in between the cylinder and the push rod chamber. It took a lot of cleaning up, and cleaning the carbon off the piston and the valves, but all back together and the valves adjusted, and it runs like a champ now, and no more smoke. Thanks for your excellent videos!
I was on my riding mower today and it started to smoke like crazy under load: a 17 hp OHV Briggs. I opened it up and it was exactly the problem Dony diagnosed in this video. Exactly. The gasket set me back $10.00 and now I'm good to go. Thanks a million, Dony!
Dale Grote you're welcome dale
Excellent video no BS it's just straight to the point everything was explained perfectly and I like that you tell what size wrenches will be needed.
Just finished replacing the head gasket on my Troy Built 110 with a B&S 550EX. When I finished i had no compression. I reviewed this video and found I had missed the step where you open the OHC cover and reseat the valves. When I did that it ran like a champ. Thanks for all you do.
I'm an Accountant by trade and this video allowed me to change the gead gasket on mine. For
like 10 Bucks. Top Job!
You HELPED AND SERVED me in getting my Troy Bilt Pony back going - with the TORQUE SPECIFICATION and THE VALVE LASH - so glad I was able to find this.... HALLELUJAH !!!!!! YOU ARE DA MAN !!!!! WOOOOO HOOOO !!!!!!!!!
Wow! I saw this video a week ago and just completed the repair of my Craftsman B&S 20hp engine for under $50 (gaskets mostly). Kudos for making this video!! It was clear, concise and accurate! A rare commodity these days. It was really cool to turn the key, and the tractor instantly started.
₩.
Donyboy your videos happen to be some of best out there !!!! I like to say thank !!!!
I enjoy watching and learning. Easy to follow.
Thanks Donny.
+Walter B thanks
Great Job Don. I like how you break down everything step by step. I might add 3 things. 1: A thicker head gasket may prevent blow-out due to increased thickness, but it will also lower engine compression slightly (less HP and cylinder pressure). 2: There is a formalized head bolt torque sequence in the B&S OHV repair manual. One should always try to use the formal sequence if available. If not then the cris-cross method will work in a pinch (as you already showed). 3: Three separate torque wrench sequence steps should be used to even out the loading on the gasket, head, and block (6 lb-ft, 12 lb-ft, 18 lb-ft). Otherwise great video. Mike K., Chicago, IL, USA. ASE Master Technician, BSME Mech Engineering, Former Engine Development Engineer Navistar Engine Corp.
Hi Don, I have never replaced a head gasket but have good mechanical aptitude so because of your detailed well explained step by step video I took on the challenge with my 19 year old Troybilt machine (which by the way is in very good shape). The repair was a complete success no more smoke and it runs like a champ.
Thank you for publicly sharing your knowledge and expertise you’re obviously an excellent technician, teacher and obviously a good man!
Terrific video Dony, clear and concise directions! This helped me to get the head gasket replaced on my 18 hp Briggs engine. Took about an hour, and there were no surprises. Thank you!
One of your very best videos. Thanks for the extreme closeups and remembering every step. Also for slowing down a moment on important details. Great job.
Best and most informative video i have seen on small engine repair...you are the best. Thank you for helping us backyard mechanics .
Thanks for the video. My lawn tractor was smoking white with oily spark plug. After taking it apart following your video. Same problem. Blown head gasket. Thanks for the video! Saved me $$$
Thank you Donnyboy73 for another great video!!! Clear, concise, complete and very informative.
Great video - was able to change out my gasket today in a just a few hours. Mine did smoke a lot when I started it back up, but it was all the oil that accumulated in the muffler - after about 5 minutes it burned off and no smoke! Thank you!
Great video. With your guidance and thorough step by step instructions I was able to repair my Airens Zero turn mower with this same engine. Fired it up and it sounds like it did when I first bought it 16 years ago. You probably saved me over $350! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and presenting it in a concise manner without all the silliness and bad videography some others put on RUclips.
I just started watching your videos on lawn mower repair. You do an excellent job I like your style how you teach. Keep up the good work Donnie!
Followed your steps and revived a 18.5 Briggs engine that had the valve seat come loose. Just mowed the lawn with it for over and hour. All was needed was a new head gasket and a spark plug for good measure. Thanks Dony!
Great Video. I"m good to go. I work on cars all the time but knew nothing about single stroke engines. I am 100% sure this is a project that won"t be a big deal. The valve adjustment instruction was outstanding. Thank You!
You look so young back then lolol
Your blessed and God is good 😊
Thanks for sharing advice and information that helps others…
Yes lol
I found your video for help when I worked on my neighbor's 100 series JD. I changed the fuel pump thinking that was the problem. It was the head gasket. That machine is near new now. Runs like a dream. Thanks for making your videos on this
Your video gave this Girl the power to fix a blown head gasket and adjust the valves on a 16.5 hp Lawn Tractor ALL BY MYSELF! Thank you!!!
Don, thanks for this video. This is my first time to do this kind of work on my mower. I even got halfway through the job on mine, got a bit nervous about it, hired a mechanic who didn't show, went back and watched again, and then felt confident enough to finish the job myself. Cheers.
Thank you. Excellent video. Got my B&S engine head gasket replaced at weekend. Very clear step by step with the tools required for the job. Now to cut the grass (without the smoke!)
I want to thank you personally for helping me fix my Briggs & Stratton John Deere head gasket. your videos are very informative very well done and I want to thank you very much
you're welcome, make sure you're subscribed
Just wanna thank you for the great video you saved me a lot of money showing me how to do it myself. Well done
You are a god! The camerawork, explanations, the patience, the video editing that obviously went into it must have taken hours - no wonder you filmed it in the winter and have only just published it. If only there were awards for this kind of films -- which can be viewed for FREE! -- this would win several Oscars. Magnificent.
7 years and this video is still relevant. Just did this on a 21HP B&S Intek. Watched several videos, your's was the most detailed. Repair went smooth. Now I have to mow. Thanks!
Dony, I have to say you make the best videos I've ever seen. The attention to detail is amazing and your intruction and tips are wonderful. Thanks so much.
thanks, don't forget to enter the tool giveaway for march, the post is on my facebook

You sir, just earned yourself a subscriber. BEST DIY mower video I’ve ever seen. Hands down.
Just love your videos, Dony Boy. Not only do you do the job with confidence but literally teach. By watching your later videos, I managed to adjust the valves of my Honda mower otherwise it would have cost me a fair bit giving it to a mechanic. Keep up the good work Dony and thanks a lot. Sydney, Australia.
greetings from Canada Mate!
This was a lot of help. Just made this repair along with a handful of others and she is running smooth!
Wow! What an amazing tutorial. I hesitated to watch it because it was almost 30 mins long but when I finished watching it felt like 15 mins had gone by. Very detailed and clean work! Thanks, Dony.
velox731 ppl I'm
That is amazing! I didn’t realize this was that easy, well you make it look easy 😊 thank you so much for sharing because I really needed this ❣️💖💫👍🏻
Gee .. It's really amazing that there's a common sense, "master mechanic" out there that genuinely wants to - not only show how to do a repair right, but really wants to "help"people, and save' them a world of grief,so they won't be doing something wrong or stupid, and mess something up, and have to trash it.. Thank you so' so' much Master Dony !!! I absolutely love watching your videos !!- I've been wrench'n on small trks. Harleys, lawn mowers, and snow blowers since I was 16... I'm 72 now 😬
Don, you are "The Man" thanks for putting up this video. I just fixed what I thought was a lost cause. I was getting oil in the carb and gas in the oil. I replaced the head gasket just like the video told me to. Now for around $20 it's running great. Thanks again.
you're welcome, make sure to have subscribed
Just repaired my ailing John Deere (2014) thanks to this video, I hope to keep it going for a few more years. Thanks for the great information in the video, Cheers from Australia
Just did this job head gasket replacement on an identical B&S engine. 7/64" allen key fits the rocker arm torx adjuster and 7/32" allen key fits the torx bolt head that fastens the exhaust manifold. Your instructions on adjusting the valves are excellent- extremely helpful. Thanks, Dony you're the best.
Never use hex (Allen) keys on Torx drive fasteners.
You have the best lawn mower repair videos on RUclips by far. Thanks so much!.
Awesome vid, I have never taken the head off an OHV Briggs, I am a Flathead man!
Now I will know how to do it! It sure runs well now, good job Dony!
Terrific detail in the process here. This solves the exact problem I’m having with my Yard Machines lawn tractor. So happy my favourite small engine mechanic took the time to demonstrate the proper methodology and techniques.Thank you very much Donny!
Cheers from Montreal!
merci Claude!
Great video, right to the point, well illustrated and great graphics. I just used it to replace a blown head gasket on a Craftsman 17.5 HP Virtec engine that was blowing a LOT of blue smoke. I first had to replace the carb because it was severely flooding the engine and crankcase. After replacing carb & changing oil, started up and ran but still blowing smoke. Next, replaced Head Gasket, now running perfectly. Your video gave me the confidence I needed to do it myself, without paying $$$ to a shop. Keep up the good work!
make sure you're subscribed
What a great video! Just worked on my Toro Wheel Horse and everything is up and running again. Even though I had to adjust the valves a third time, it was a great learning experience. Thanks again!
Excellent video. My 19 year old DLT3000 became very hard to start, followed the video and started right up with no hesitation. Runs like new again, Thanks!
Terrific video and calm explanation to a complex repair. May be a good idea to film yourself disassembling your machine and then watch again to reassemble. Have all your tools and parts at the ready. Great filming of this repair. Your calm demeanor was impressive, so I guess years of experience is the reason for that along with pure confidence. Thank you for sharing your expertise!!
You saved me money and taught me something useful. I called for a quote at local small engine he said min 200 Canadian because it has to goto the machine shop for something to be moulded..... I'm so glad i watched this thanks again.
you're welcome, make sure you're subscribed
Hey Don, thx for making this video! I got an old (20+ years) Toro Wheelhorse and following your instructions was able to change the head gasket (and also changed the carburetor). Runs like a charm again!
As always, this is a great, instructional video, Dony! Very subdue and easy to understand the way you do it! Keep it up!
Thank you for the great instructional video! You have given me the courage to try it.
Very useful information. I really never thought about pulling the engine apart and checking the head gasket. Cars and I'll hurt me That's the first thing I would do if I'm burning an excessive amount of oil. I pulled the heads and check those and the gaskets.
You mentioned something about this guy had bought a new head and it was a small fortune. What I do I go to my local machine shop. Just for one head they will clean and put new seats in and sometimes new valve guides. The most I have ever spent on one head was $125. Now it does take a week or two before this particular shop has your head back to you. Normally I'm goofing around with enough things in my garage that I just push whatever I'm waiting on the head for into the corner.
A long time back about 12 years I broke my back at work and as a result of that I have it extreme insomnia. There's been plenty of times I've gone out into my garage and the next thing I know it's sunrise. I crank up the stereo or just turn the TV on and watch that as I'm working on different things. I found the information in this video very useful.
Look forward to watching another one of your videos thank you for sharing.
very well done. enough detail to carry out procedure on my own. going to fire it up tomorrow - fingers crossed. feeling pretty good about it as symptoms and fix were just as on video. thanks so much.
Brilliant as always Don. Always a pleasure to watch and learn tricks from you. I post many self help videos on the older Cast Iron Briggs, but I'm always working on these newer engines as well. On running the engine without the oil check tube secured, I HAVE had the crank case pressure throw the tube from the oil port...makes for a big mess to clean up if you don't have it secured when test running without the blower shield in place. Cheers! Zip~
Very good video for the amateur like me. Head gasket blown and my spark plug housing with the Bakelite was all melted! So had to replace both. For anyone who gets a bit of smoke on starting after the repair, don’t worry it’s most likely the old oil and will burn off. Mine did.
Just found and subscribed to your channel tonight. I tore down one this morning for my brother I think that's the problem on this one but you're video just showed me little things to look for. Great video sir.strait to the point and no loud music 🤗
THANK YOU! This video is EXACTLY what happened to our Huskee Supreme SLT 4200. The mower repair shop said it was DOA. Disassembled & inspected valves, rockers, head, cylinder, etc., all in excellent condition with no signs of wear: the only indicator was the little burn by the cylinder. $20 worth of gaskets and some time cleaning out the really bad carbon build-up, new spark plug and now it's running! Your video saved our mower, because we were convinced by the mower dude that it was beyond repair. YOU ROCK!
WE HAVE SOME MOWER CROOKS IN A NEARBY TOWN TOO!
Excellent video. I have the same motor and same problem. Was not sure about taking on the job but your video walk through makes it simple. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the great video. Very well explained. I especially liked your comment about if valve adjustments are not done correctly it will seem like you need a new starter. I had that problem but simply readjusted the valves and all was good.
You are a life saver. I have no choice but to do this, my mower has the same problem. Altho I don't have the same mower, it will help anyways. Thank you so much.
Great video. I just replaced the head gaskets on my 2001 GMC Yukon (coolant leaking into the engine oil). It's fairly similar just on a lot bigger 5.3L V8 motor lol. Keep up the great videos Don!
Another EXCELLENT video . If you left out anything , I can't imagine what it could be . Thank You ! ( with your thoroughness , i wish you gave golf instruction )
Wow very well done instructional video. I am a retired nurse and can't thank you enough for helping me understand what is wrong with my riding mower. The part I need to replace is the cylilner head and cost for part is $110.00 and labour another #300.00 at the shop.
Don, thanks for great info, and the steps were so easy to follow I actually felt comfortable taking parts like head and valves on my troybilt rider 42". I put all together even the pushrods lined up (thanks for the tip with penlight to see the hole to position top rod). My only problem is it won't start. It cranks but won't turn over. I'll take your advice and readjust the valves and let you know the outcome.
I watched a lot of videos but first time for you and i would rate it a ten ,you explain every thing so well ,you cleaned that head so nice ,your the best ,i hope you have plenty of videos cause i will watch them all,and keep them coming.
Went through the steps shown worked out great .this was recent purchase the head gasket was bad for some time.took some pictures hope I can send them took at least an hour to clean carbon off.
I love!!! The way you explain, especially peaafull , relax and obviously with precisely information, god bless you dony73!!!
This is the best tutorial I have seen on this subject: well considered and well filmed.
good video, very concise and detailed.
thanks T-man, enjoy ur new house!
donyboy73 Hey donyboy, I have a Kohler Engine Lawnmower (couple months old), When I was doing my after season Oil Change I decided to get all the old oil out and took off the Valve Cover off, after cleaning out the oil from that pan I noticed there wasn't a real gasket between the Head and the Valve cover, just a small bead of some grey silicone stuff that ripped. Is that normal from the factory, and should I just put some RTV in its place because it drips a couple drops an hr from the bottom of the cover where it meets.
Thank you very much!
Good video. One tip; Mark TDC before the head goes back on. Also, that backing off a 1/4 inch (towards end of video) is done to set the clearance for the compression relief. That reduces load on the starter while cranking.
If your move the piston till 1 valve is fully closed the other will be fully open ,,no need to find TDC . Lot easier .
An excellent, informative, step by step video. My mower is running like new now- thank you.
The best video on doing this I have seen. Convinced me to get a pro to do the job. Somethings are bet left to a pro.
Its a good idea to flip the pushrods over so the bit the was wearing on the guide is at the bottom over time they wear you can see and feel it. and eventually they break there by flipping them you get a second go with them 👍
Hey just want to say thanks did this job on my mower watched a handfull of videos but this was the one to get me thru
same problem on my 20 hp Toro....got it fixed. Thanks for the help
Thanks Donyboy 73.
I'm getting ready to do this to my Cub Cadet with a 20 hp Kohler.
You are fantastic! Thanks for this excellent video. As soon as it gets cooler here in South Louisiana, I’m going to do this repair!
I am so grateful for your instructional videos. I just replaced the head gasket on my Briggs and Stratton Craftman, 11 year tractor. Your explanations are so clear and the quality of the videos are excellent. Just to let you know, my name is Gloria, professor at the University of Puerto Rico and with a couple of years on my back. The hardest part was the cleaning of parts, getting rid of the carbon. I have subscribed to your channel and am learning very much from you. Again, thanks so much!
hi Gloria, greetings from Canada!
That was a really well made video. I haven't seen them better.
Very clear and pleasant to look at.
Compliments!
As always great video, great detail, always professional. Thanks
Great video Don! I definitely recommend re-torquing the head bolts after 3 to 6 hours run time and even on a new engine they should be re-torqued. I have noticed on quite a few of these you can gain almost a half a turn with the torque wrench. These overhead valve Briggs are kind of poorly designed, there is quite a span between head bolts and quite thin in this area making it the weakest point. You are right, with some of the after market head gaskets are better than the OEM ones and a bit cheaper sometimes.
thanks Jim
This video is going to help me replace my head gasket on my mower on the 22nd. Wish me luck
Awesome job with the video very detailed, the problem I was having was the valve too loose and not letting the engine turn over and you answered my question thanks so much
Wow this is truely the best tutorial I've ever seen. Great job. Wish I had seen this last fall before I bought a new mower.
Thank you so much Donyboy73. Follow along to your video and changed the head gasket myself - saving me a couple hundred bucks! I am a carpenter - so small machinery is not my thing. But with you comprehensive and detailed instructions, I was able to do it like a pro. Thanks again!
Madtown Architect you're welcome and thanks for subscribing
Thanks so much for taking your time to help people out, I learned a lot from your videos
excellent job and easy to follow your pains taking efforts to make it simple and attainable, thanks
Thank you, your efforts to teach us small engine repair are really appreciated.
jonathan bosco you're welcome
This has to be one of the best video's I have viewed in a long time, great content, great camera work, you should be an instructor.
spencer groom thanks
He is doing exactly that through his videos
Hey Donyboy. Great video. My lawn tractor is blowing smoke like crazy and I think it is the head gasket. It is from my John Deere lawn tractor D110. I think it is 17 HP. Whenever I have trouble with my Lawn equipment, I check out your website first. You do a good job explaining things. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍
Donny boy comes through for me again! Thanks for sharing your knowledge bud. Cheers from Montreal!
This helped me through the whole process! Fired up and all good again. Thank you for the vid!!👍🏻
Been following you for many years when I need a small engine fix as I understand basics. This popped up because I'm loo0king at oil coming out of a non running B&S engine. Have seen a couple of how too's. They were pretty through. But you've done this from the alley Mechanic's point of view. Will come back to your detailed explanation when I start on this. Gonna see If you've done a hydrostatic transmission. Thanks.
Nice video. Ive used steel wool to clean up the gasket area in the past. Seems to work great!
Thanks for a great video. first viewed it over 6 years ago and used this knowledge many times since; Most recently on a B&S 19hp 33r877 0004 g1 and the failure was exactly as you described. When reassembling I had a brain fart and my friend tried to compress the spring with a long screwdriver while I replaced the rocker arm. He slipped a couple of times and later I found a piece of metal that looked like half of a small 1/4" by 1/4" piece of some sort of sleeve or spacer. Did not see where it came from so I finished assembly and then the engine was hard cranking even though I adjusted valve lash to spec. The battery was weak and it would start some times if I turned the engine by hand a bit so I left it on a charger. My friend says it is still hard cranking with fully charged battery but spins fast with spark plug removed. I looked at diagram on Briggs site and there is a valve seal on the intake (illus item 868 part 690968) that might be the mystery part.
The diagram shows this part on the intake only; is that real or do you think they just drew it up that way as a typical? Would that piece missing cause misalignment to mess up the compression?
It did crank easily before I worked on it so I am assuming it is not the decompression bump that is not working. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Nice video Dony! I really appreciate your time!
