Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

How many hours do you think is to much on a mower like this?
My neighbor brought me his jd 300 series. It won’t start. It has no spark. Plugs are fine. Coils look good and I cleaned them up. It turns over, but no spark. I’m thinking safety switches are next. He had bypass the seat switch but what and where do I locate the hidden switches?
Good morning, Yesterday I was going to mow. Gee, my mower wouldn't start. Fooled with it most of day. Read this article about the choke but didn't think I could do it. I'm 73+ years and can't get up and down very well. Well I looked at your video again this morning, went to the garage and within 15 minutes had the hood of, choke tightened, jumped mower and boom, started right up. God bless you my dear friend. I'm so happy right now. The only down side is that it rained almost all night and morning so it is to wet to mow. LOL Again, thanks soooo much for this info.
Thank God we have people like you who don't mind sharing their knowledge with those of us who don't mind learning new skills. Your channel is great!
just pinned your comment to top of comments
Agreed, you really do a great service, Dony. Thank you!
I agree, whoever says info on the net is a bunch of balogne is looking in the wrong spot.
@@dwoodog That's the truth! Exactly two days after I watched this video, I got a call from a friend whose John Deere riding mower was hard to start. You guessed it. It was slack in the choke cable. Now it starts in fewer than 2 seconds. He couldn't believe how expertly I made the repair. All I said was, "Eh, sometimes you get lucky," but I know if Donnie hadn't posted this video, I'd still be staring at it after three hours of fruitless effort.
i guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a trick to get back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the account password. I would appreciate any help you can give me
I have this exact mower. I have had this issue for two years. This is exactly what was wrong with my mower. Huge thanks!!!!
Like how you explain things in a easy calm way , no over explanation just straight to the point . With experience and wisdom . Keep up the excellent work and content . Exactly how it should be done .
As Aristotle said in his Metaphysics, a sign of true mastery of a subject is the ability to teach it.
Thank you! This freaking tractor just cranks and cranks until the battery dies. I tried your choke adjustment and it fired up like a wild thing! Yay.
Several years ago I was having a hard start with my John Deere mower, it took some time but I found I was having the same problem shown in your video. Your video is going to help a lot people in the future with this fix, thanks for sharing.
1 dislike from the guy who bought a new carb. Thanks DB.
Hahaha man I know that feeling. Hopefully it's going to fix my issue 🤞
5 minutes fixed an 8 year old problem. Thanks
This is the way an informational video should be made, quick and concise! Good job and thank you!
I wish that you had this video two years ago. It would have saved me some time.
I have a slightly older 20HP one.
The problem is that the carburetor linkage travel is shorter than the operator throttle linkage travel.
When you pull down the linkage to idle too hard it will eventually change the cable position, causing hard starting.
If Craftsman put hard stops on the operator's lever, the problem of the cable moving would be eliminated.
Awesome, such a small thing, but so important!
Dang where was this video a month ago? I figured that out on a friend's tractor, adjusted the cable and it fires right up every morning!
It doesn't cost anything - just a knowledge.
Thanks to RUclips we have Donyboy
Keep up the work 👍
These tutorials would make a great television show. Every home owner has these same basic lawn and garden machines along with the breakdowns. Most of us not only delight in saving money but enjoy the gratification of repairing our own equipment. Thanks donyboy for making this happen and hope to see you on T.V. someday.
It starts !! Thanks so much. Fixed our problem. Appreciate you sharing this info
OMG! I had this ride on mower that was a pain to start for 3 years. One day I couldn’t get it to turn over. Came across your video and since my mower is very similar to the one in the video I had high hopes. Five minutes later the mower started better than it ever had before. Great video. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
I have that same engine on my husqvarna, and that is exactly how it behaves. Thanks for the tip!
I'm just wondering how RUclips knew I needed to know this.. Thank you
Just was ready to have my tractor hauled to shop. Found this video. Fixed in 10 minutes. Thanks very much.
Thanks again donyboy..I've been seeing this for years and yes it's coming from the mower plant itself..and its not just briggs and stratton either ..had a few kohlers too..
Yep, set up wrong from the factory. Poor quality control.
Brilliant fix Don, thx for the info. Eric.
hey Eric, we'll be in touch once I flatten the curve!
I can't thank you enough for this video! After struggling with this problem for the last 3 years, you fixed our problem in less than 5 minutes. My husband can finally stop swearing now 😉. You get right to the point, explain things very well and give great step by step instructions. Now, if we can just get the darned generator to start 😉. Thanks again
Hey Dony, Thanks for this great video. I have a Toro Wheel Horse Riding Mower that was working fine two years ago when I parked it in the garage. Now that I need to use it again, it is not running. I mean, it starts and runs for a few seconds and then dies. I have changed the oil filter, fuel filter, fuel line, air cleaner, spark plug, etc. and have checked the carburetor Solenoid which is fine. So, now I am totally puzzled.
Do you think the problem is in the Choke cable being loose as you say in this video? Does the choke cable goes to the carburetor which is mounted on the side of the engine on this mower?
I don't have much experience fixing lawn mowers but I can do things with your help. Thanks
I know you probably already got it fixed or throw it away or something but I had the same problem with mine and ended up being the ignition coil but I replaced a lot of parts before I found the problem
Not gonna start if you aren't sitting on the seat!!
Donny, haven't been tuning in much, do to, we won't get in to it. But as always, Donny, your still the King...
Apart from the cable being adjusted wrongly, maybe the screw was not always tight enough to stop the outer slipping a little.
A very sloppy factory with minimal quality control.
I've got to thank you, fixed the choke and it started instantly. There was so much dirt caked around the spring that it kept the choke closed. Cleaned the dirt off the spring and it works like as it should.
Great Video Don And I Had The Same Thing Happen To Me On My John Deere GT 275 Lawn And Garden Tractor With The Single Cylinder Kawasaki 17hp
I had to adjust it..I did it..still won't start...carb next I guess...it start with spray.
Thank you for sharing another great tip. 😎👍
Just saw this video I have a snapper ST2046 it is just like yours, except mine has a spring on the bottom of the chock rod. I did what you said and heard the choke close, WOW!!! it started for the first time with the choke, I have been priming the carb., for 3 year to get it started. Thanks.
Very good advise so many out there that don't know what a choke does, and like you say, something to check before you ring the service shop, nice video.
There isn't anyone who fixes these things in my remote location so need to do it all myself. I've been fixing and doing maintenance on my own 21hp, 46" deck, Craftsman for 11 years now with help from people like you. This year I will put in a fuel shut off valve for the heck of it. I often have about 3 issues each season and last year didn't have one so figured I was going to have fun this year. First thing this season, I had to replace the battery - so glad it wasn't the starter! I've replaced and diagnosed so many issues on my own tractor that guys even come to me in desperation to help them. Thanks for helping me with another thing to check.
This guy is a blessing.
This was a problem I had and never knew it. Thank God for you and for RUclips fix it people!
Thanks DB73, You Rock the Knowledge world :-)
Heck yes! I can’t thank you enough for sharing your knowledge!
As always, clear, precise and concise explanations. Bravo !
#$*#@% I’ve owened the tractor for years and it’s always cranks for a minute or two before firing…I took to a reputable shop to have it tuned. No real improvement!! I just accepted that was how it was. It took me longer to walk from the garage to the shed than it did to make the adjustment…..thank you, thank you.
I can't thank you enough for this video. I've struggled with this issue for almost 10 years on this tractor right out of the box. There was a lot more play in my situation but your quick and inexpensive fix was right on the money. Keep up the great videos, they are quite helpful.
Excellent, clear, well-structured video. Well done Dony.
what about if it cranks for a few times but wont start. then it just clicks? Battery is good voltage.
Dame here
This is why donyboy73's channel is so important. Thanks for all the invaluable info.
I'm new to lawn tractors and I just got one at the end of last summer, used. I needed a refresher on how to cold start and understanding the choke. I'm glad I looked at this! Not only did you clear up my confusion, you taught me how it actually works! Thanks for a clear and brief explanation!
What a simple fix.... probably one of the easiest things to do but a the average consumer would never know this...thanks for pointing this out...great job
You just saved me from a big headache. This was the troubleshooting trick that I needed and it worked!
That's a great simple fix if that's really the problem, which I've seen several with that same condition, this is why I prefer the older style with separate throttle and choke cables...much less prone to have this problem.
My Craftsman Lawn Tractor had the 24HP Twin engine, it was just a pile of crap to begin with. It would randomly shut itself off while mowing too, once it cooled down completely it would fire back up and be fine for another mowing or several then it would do the same thing again. After about 7 years of pretty light duty use a connecting rod parted ways, wasn't even upset when it died, that thing was junk from day 1. Only bought a Craftsman again because my old GT6000 ran great for 21 years and it did a lot heavier mowing and other yard and garden chores than the YT4000 that replaced it ever did.
I have a YT 3000 craftsman. This is my tenth year bought it new only problem I ever had was I needed to replace the ignition coil this past spring other than that routine oil changes and maintenance starts up every time. I only have 70 hours still looks and runs like new…….
Great catch Don. I would have checked the carb instead. I am glad i saw this video, i will check the linkage from now on first.
Just completed this on my rider. It was quick and easy. Mine had a lot of play. I just firmly grabbed that linkage and tightened it down of course with full throttle engaged.
You are a Master on the maneer how to explain to us to solve little problems easy to fix. Highly appreciated Don
Great video! Short and to the point.
This problem has plagued me since I bought this infernal machine and now I see it's an easy fix.
Thanks for posting!
This is amazing information. I love tinkering with my old vtwin carb on my Scott’s mower. I am going to check to make sure mine is correct. Thank you so much!!!!!
I have an older model just like this one I bought used, can you tell me the best weight OIL S.A.E. such as straight 30 weight or a multi blend like 10-30? I would appreciate an answer, oh mine takes an oil filter as well and I'll tell you it does make a difference.
You’re a wealth of knowledge, always look forward to your videos.
The BIGGEST THANK YOU!!!! My choke didn't seem to have any slack but i just rocked the connection a couple of times.... & 1 hr later i am back here saying tks... after mowing :)
Always interesting Dony. Makes you wonder if there is any "quality control" in production these days. I don't know where these tractors and engines are manufactured, but it sure appears that no one cares about the product or the end user. It is no wonder that folks hold onto their vintage JD, Gravely and IH tractors.
once reputable manufacturers have lowered the bar and are only concerned about the bottom line = greed
Agreed 🤔
I have that same engine in a 5 year old Simplicity Broadmoor. The throttle lever goes from turtle to rabbit I believe. No choke position on throttle lever. It has always been slow to start compared to my Kohler engine. Could the slow cold starting be an issue like you present? Thanks for this very useful video!
yes it could be
Thank you so much for sharing this video!!! I’ve had this problem for a few years now & tried several different things. Thanks to your knowledge & sharing on this video I was able to fix the problem in a few short minutes 👍🏼👏🏼
Thanks again!
Thanks for the update it solved my problem
Very helpful. As always. I have a countax a2050. It runs well for an hour. Then just starts to die. I changed the air filter as it's obviously an air intake issue. I think. I put the bonnet up and it runs but it's difficult to mow with the bonnet up.. Any ideas gratefully received!
Amazing! I didn't expect to find a solution from youtube so quickly, but my lawnmower started right away. It's always been difficult to start, and this is apparently why.
Dude, after watching video I made adjustment and my mower started right up. I was getting frustrated as well and about to call a small engine repair place.
Thanks for the video, great stuff. Subscribed.
Good One! That is an old tractor with the very convenient hand speed control. Wish I could convert my X320 to that.
My 22HP Kawasaki was starting very hard and after carb disassembly, fuel filter replacement, blowing out lines and draining tank I finally got a new Fuel pump. Seems OK now. It would run at high RPM once it started with the aid of fuel or Ether to the carb.
A basic diagnosis that's easy to overlook. Thanks!!!
I have this same mower. Yesterday I was mowing I thought I ran out of gas so I refilled and still want crank so I took the carb off and cleaned it but no luck. What can I check next. Thanks in advance.
Same exact issue here. For me, gas is coming out into carb. spark plugs replaced and has spark .Checked wires for short. Nothing found. Only thing i have not done yet was to remove carb and check. But i do know the cables and choke are tight and functioning.
Not sure what else to look at, other then removing
eplacing the carb itself.
EXCELLENT video 🇺🇸
This guys knowledge about small engines is just mind blowing thanks Don for sharing
He A modern day Genius 💡💡💡
I had tried several things, but nothing worked till I saw your post.I tried moving the throttle cable like you showed and now my mower starts like a champ. Thanks so much.
Thank you for publishing this easy to follow video. It saved me calling the tractor repair company and charging me $400 for a home visit. So easy to fix! 👍
Who else new that on that other carb that he has moving the throttle not the choke 🤣
good tip Dony ! that's a pretty dumb set up to take it off choke you are on wide open throttle on a cold motor... my Husqvarna tractor with a Kawasaki motor has a separate choke cable from the throttle
It’s almost magic. I have been cranking that engine for more than 30 seconds on every cold start since countless years and suddenly while looking for a way to prime the start, I fall on your video! It’s like winning a contest. So many thanks to you !!!
you need to buy a lottery ticket!
Clear, concise video...I watched it even though I don't own a lawn tractor. I watch the rest of your vids just because I like your style.
Exactly the same problem on my Husqvarna lawn tractor. Came like that from the dealer. Makes you wonder if they even test start it before delivery..I knew what your answer was before I viewed the video!
Thank you, for making this video
Thanks for the info. I had this issue today on the same mower. It eventually fired but only after 45 m of tinkering.
Keep Up The good work 👍, I love your videos.
I've Been watching your videos for 5 years and I enjoy watching them 😉. Have great Day and a great weekent. 🤠
😀
I has to do basically the same thing to my neighbors single cylinders Briggs engine just a few months ago
Thank you for sharing your experience. Love your videos....you get right to the point!!!!
What do you think about it not starting do to compression. I take the spark plug out and the engine cranks.
try adjusting valves
Got to love free info in this capitalist sometimes greedy world...😟 stay safe...
Fixed my problem. Thanks for sharing! You're awesome!
on mine you have to be sitting on the seat to start
Appreciate your videos! Wish you were close by cause I got a good one for you, Craftsman LT2000; for the life of me can’t figure it out. New carb, new ignition coil and spark plug, flywheel pin is ok, new fuel filter, piston moves, compression around 100. These models don’t have a choke. Very hard to start, sometimes does if I add some throttle and idles high erratically. Ends up stalling out after few mins and won’t start back up. I’m so lost.
This video just saved me. I have been fighting my mower for several years starting it cold. Five minutes of work and now it fires right up every time. Thank You!
If it just dies on ya these are the things to look at> Make sure it got fuel! the Fuel filter, air filter, clog line, trash in the tank, or no spark. Most cases its the carburetor solenoid. . There trashy need to replace every 2 yrs. THE CARBURETOR IS THE LAST THING TO REPLACE! They last a long time if you keep fresh fuel in it, and a clean fuel filter, and a clean air filter on them. and run carburetor clean threw the engine ! This also help with the spark plug life as well, Its like a tune up
Another awsome video dony. I hope all is well with you and your family y'all have a great day
dang Don , love this simple fix , well done as always :)
This was exactly what was wrong with my Craftsman mower and it made me crazy for 9 years because it was so hard to start when cold!!!!! Your fix made this thing like a completely different new mower. It starts right up now. Amazing, thank you so much. Chuck
MY new pony just died on me for no reason at all. So i went threw the process . Only way to fine the problem. i found trash in the tank. it looked like paper from the gas can led. clean that out and blew out the lines and put another fuel filter on it. Nope that wasn't it! So it got to be the solenoid. It was my solenoid! It went out on my new pony ! i stuck a new carburetor solenoid on . IT FIRED RITE UP ; ) I never choke one! It starts in low throttle
I just bought a craftsman (got a good deal)...I'll keep this in mind! thx!
The one I have doesn't do Anything whenever I turn the friggin KEY! It's used for my next door neighbor, but what can it BE?
This tip was very helpful! I bought a Simplicity Regent in 2015, and it has always been difficult to start. I watched this video, adjusted the throttle cable, made sure the choke fully engaged, and it starts like a champ every time! Thanks donyboy73!
THank you for your great tutorial. Most helpful.
I have an older craftsman lawn tractor early 2000s and it won’t start seems like it’s not getting fuel so I might see about putting in a new carborator and see what happens it might just need new fuel hoses
*Runs outta fuel and tries all the free fixes to get it going again*
... Dammit thought I found a cheat.
New here🙆🏻♀️ really appreciate this tips to fix our mowers..but mine doesn't even give that nice noise..attempting to start..just make a "click, click" sound, battery is good, fuse, spark plugs..will check that choker though..🤔 thank you kindly! And if it gets fixed, definetly will send you a six pack😉🤘🏼
Excellent help. Great video. Thanks. Thanks
You're welcome!
Thanks a lot! I changed the gas filter and oil filter and a brand new battery. I hear You click when I turn it on but that's it. What could it be?
Don = small engine genius
