Hi Mitch, have you had any issues with using HLG in low light due to its inherent 1000 ISO? Also, your thoughts regarding the 16-55 vs 18-55 for video? Many thanks!
No not at all. 1000 ISO is actually very clean as long as you expose correctly. As you probably saw in the video the shot of the RED at the start was really clean, absolutely no noise and yet still 1000 iso. I would honestly pick the 18-55 because of the stabilization, size and weight and cost. It is such a good lens.

Don't use HLG if you want to produce something to be dispalyed on PC. And using F-log to 709 trasision for HLG video is a mistake as well (HLG was created as standard and uses HLG transfer function). BTW Adobe doesn't work great with Fuji as it reads Fujis movie trasision in rec. 709 when Fuji uses 601. Only DAvinci 16 reads is as 601, as it should be.
Great tutorial! What program do you use to convert the H.265 to ProRes? Earlier i have been using MPEG streamclip, but but it seems like it only working with H.264 hmm..
Hello! Really awesome content. Could you please tell one thing. I am a run and gun shooter, I do a lot of Promotion music videos, promotional video gigs, weddings and real estate videos. I’m planning to upgrade to a 4k 60p Camera like and I’m confused if I should buy Xt3 or BMPCC 4k. As I’m worried if I buy Xt3, I will have to buy a new computer as BMPCC 4k Raw is so smooth to edit on my machine. I have a 4th generation quad core i7 with 16gb Ram and 2gb Nvidia 960m Video Card. Do you think I can edit 4k 60p on this machine ? Really appreciate your time to answer.
Wow! I learned so much! Thank you!!! Could you done a similar result in grading with eterna? I am just asking myself if there is such a huge difference between flog and eterna?
You’ve been super helpful in so many ways! Could you go over how to transcode videos? I’m using a Microsoft surface pro 6 with the premiere pro and it can be pretty slow with handling
Mitch Lally ahh thank you! Also, when you shoot slow motion.. do you change the frames on movie mode (to 60) or is it okay to use the full high speed rec 120fps automatically converted to 24? Saw on your other video you had that as one of your Fn buttons
Hi Mitch, what is your workflow when you import HLG footage from your Fuji camera into DaVinci Resolve. I have read, that DaVinci Resolve does not support the Fuji log/HLG Profiles......thank you
HLG is the move! I love resolve too. But it is too much of a learning curve to try to figure out the editing component - I don't have much free time to invest in learning it when I already know premiere. Maybe one day :)
Awesome video I just bought your lut pack and will give HLG a go! Ive been shooting mainly with FLOG and applying the eterna lut but ive found skin tones are really magenta and other issues. What have you got your noise reduction NR setting in camera? -4? Thanks!
Josh Churcher thanks for buying the pack Josh! My full settings are in the video linked in the description. But for NR I use 0. Should I try -4 instead? I’m still getting good detail and resolution at 0..
Mitch Lally NR should only be -4 when shooting JPEG stills with raised ISO. Never heard of issues when recording video. Always better to de-noise post.
Hey Mitch, quick question. I have the xt3...and when I shoot h.265 I also use proxies. My question is: do you export the actual final video in h.265 or h.264? I've been shooting h.265, but exporting h.264 thinking that it would play easier on not only mine, but everyone elses media devices... any input would be much appreciated..
Hey Mitch, question no one has seemed to ask or answer with HLG, for those of us who use a waveform monitor, do you happen to know what is the proper IRE value of 18% middle gray in HLG? In F-log? In Eterna? I can't seem to find this info anywhere and its very important for good consistent exposure

Great video! I need to use Lumetri Scopes more often from now! :) I hope Fuji can implement Vectorscopes in camera!
I use an app called "Look Converter" to take lightroom presets and convert them to LUTs. It is the most accurate app I've found and I've tried them all.
@@MitchLally Ah, too easy! Been using Lightroom for years and was Super happy when Lumetri controls came to Premiere because they felt so familiar, even though the results didn't really translate using the 60D's footage. Just got the X-T3 on the weekend and look forward to testing out HLG...and apparently now making my own LUTs. 🙏🙌
Yeah, it will definitely look quite green overall. Most log profiles shift the color space also (I'm guessing to somehow preserve color information?) and it needs to be corrected in most cases.
I explained it in the video - but to go a little further in depth, HLG seems to me to record in rec2020 which has a higher number of possible colours than 709. rec2020 contains a lot more colours in the green spectrum, so on a regular 709 display it looks a bit off. The LUT I chose is specifically one that changes the colour space from 2020 to 709. You’ll notice it doesn’t change the contrast in the image. The other luts will affect the luma values of the clip though.
Great video. I also enjoyed your previous XT3 settings video. I got 255GB XT3 video files from my last trip and will edit a video out of it soon. Thank you for your insights.
Hi I'm thinking about buying the X-T3 as a Bcam to my Canon c200 as the Eosr is seriously floored regarding video, what are your thoughts on matching the footage of the two cameras in post? Many thanks.
Teis Ravn-Jonsen I saw a lot of banding in a variety of situations - and color blocking. I don’t think log profiles work well with low bitrate codecs - maybe prores will work (like on the RED I have, log looks great in prores) but not h264 - it is simply too compressed.
Hi Mitch, I'm about to pull the trigger and buy the X-T3 but so tempted to get the BMPCC4K because of the raw hype. I'm planning to shoot a low budget netflix film. What are your thoughts on IQ? surprisingly the dynamic range of both cameras seems very similar from what I've seen
What bitrate/codec and resolution do you usually record in for these kind of videos? Just got my Fuji X-T3 and shot in the max possible and my computer was struggling at times to render the footage while scrubbing.
Update: Saw that you transcode your Fuji footage first - how long does it take to do that, and is that what you do for your YT vids? How long does it take to transcode?
Hello, this is a topic that always makes me doubt. I use Da Vinci Resolve and in some tutorials they advise to use "color space transform" at the end of nodes to output in rec709, is this correct?
If you check the date of this video I recorded it before they added color space transform. This is now my go to method but I also don't want to delete this video unless someone gets SOME value from it :)
There's a drastic difference in colourimetry between F-Log and HLG, so using F-Log LUTs isn't really advisable. Have a look at this two posts: www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/28652-fuji-x-t3-reborn-with-hlg
+1, came here wondering why no one else was saying this was wrong! I'm specifically looking for an HLG -> 709 LUT, not the misapplication of an FLOG LUT as this tutorial does :D
MrDoomsday contrary to popular belief, on cameras that shoot a compressed codec the best picture profile is the one that is closest to your final desired look.
Hi Mitch. Great video. I have tried to compare the HLG with the standard video profile, and I see a lot more noise in the darker areas of the video in HLG. The standard profile is crisp and clean. I have seen yours, and others HLG footage, and I can't see that you have the same problem. Any ideas?
Anders Bråthen I think that rather than expecting the profile to be clean in high dynamic range scenes even in the shadows you should work on creating low dynamic range scenes by using lighting, reflectors and diffusion. This will enable you to retain more detail in your shot.
Hey there! Just watched your video with interest. I noticed the same problem with your footage as I do with mine. The second clip where the model is (actually) wearing a red top it turned into a heavily saturated orange. The same thing happend to my footage when shooting f-log on my X-H 1. I tried to correct this by increasing the saturation for just all red colors but this had an effect on parts I did not want to be affected. Why is this?
Another quick one Mitch and that is what is your opinion on Eterna vs HLG? I have only done a very limited test and personally not finding that much difference, especially in regard to being able to shoot outdoors at 160 iso vs min 1000 iso. I'd be interesting to hear your take on it. Regardless, it's a step up from the 1080 I was shooting last year on the XH1 which was already pretty decent! Cheers. PS: assume you are recording internally and not to something like the Ninja V? I've just tried one but could not get dual record function to work and it ate batteries at 4-5 times the rate of my Feelworld monitor.
Firehorse Wedding Photography I use ND filters outdoors. I don’t use external recorders. Recording via HDMI is a waste of time and money IMO. In regards to eterna vs hlg- HLG all the way- I don’t like the skin tones of Eterna.
@@MitchLally OK, more testing on my part but based on your position, but I think HLG almost certainly is the better option then...as it probably should be. Variable ND here also and my experience of HDMI is not a positive one! Thanks for your input and keep up the good work. I'll shut up and leave you in peace now ;)
@@firehorseweddingphotograph3995 Mate! sorry if I came off short, I love helping people so don't feel like you're annoying me :) Appreciate the questions and for you stopping by to watch my videos! Yes I've seen cinema cameras that do ProRes onboard (red raven, epic-w, blackmagic) and they just look insanely good compared to the dslrs that do it over HDMI - dunno what it is. It's gold dust and us creatives tend to work alone so it's always good to see either another perspective or an affirmation that what you are doing yourself is pretty much on the right track! I am currently out of wedding season (starts in about 6 weeks for me) so spending quite a bit of time prepping for that which involves a lot of RUclips and messing about right now. Currently running extremely exciting battery tests, how much I can get on a card and how long before overheating occurs. Thrilling stuff ;)
Mohannad hammad Yes because the F-LOG lut I used is just a color space transform not gamma. I’m pretty sure f-log and hlg share the same color space so the LUT is compatible.
Skiiys Studio it depends on the bitrate you choose. In 100mb/s you can record 80 minutes of 4k 24p to a 128GB SD Card. Obviously other bitrates will change this number!
Is one of those luts also applied on your Self Record in this Video? Love that Look 👌🏽 furthermore: which bitrate do you estimate as necessary for good Color Grading?
Philipp Awounou no, actually the talking head shots are just the Classic Chrome profile - I do that so that its quicker and easier to get my videos edited (no need to transcode!) I sometimes chuck a lut on but I guess this time I forgot to haha!
Unfortunately you can’t get it in the camera - you’ll need to drop some cash on an xt3. But the F- LOG will serve you well in the meantime - you can use the exact same process I did here for HLG except your shadows and highlights will need to be pushed much further!
Hey man, as a xt3 user, wanted to buy your lut pack, but where I live (turkey) paypal is has no service nor I can open an account.. do ya have an anotjer paying option :/

Thanks for the Info had the feeling flog isn’t working that good with premiere
Great tutorial! What program do you use to convert the H.265 to ProRes? Earlier i have been using MPEG streamclip, but but it seems like it only working with H.264 hmm..
Sindre Carolin to be honest I was using adobe media encoder but I just switched to Davinci Resolve! Very fast and easy.
Mitch killing it again🔥
Thanks Ajay!
Cool, thanks for the information, I should definitely try HLG
Thanks
Your exposure in HLG is 0, +1 or +2? Thanks.
You’ve been super helpful in so many ways! Could you go over how to transcode videos? I’m using a Microsoft surface pro 6 with the premiere pro and it can be pretty slow with handling
Alden Barrios I already have a video for that on my channel!
Mitch Lally ahh thank you! Also, when you shoot slow motion.. do you change the frames on movie mode (to 60) or is it okay to use the full high speed rec 120fps automatically converted to 24? Saw on your other video you had that as one of your Fn buttons
@@MitchLally can't find it
So are you suggesting to never use F-Log? Doesn't the 10 bit 420 hold up?
SH Videography yes don’t use log at all unless its pro-res. Log + h264 is always a recipe for problems no matter the camera.
@@MitchLally Thanks for your response. What about the all intra codecs that GH5(s) offers?
Hi Mitch, what is your workflow when you import HLG footage from your Fuji camera into DaVinci Resolve. I have read, that DaVinci Resolve does not support the Fuji log/HLG Profiles......thank you
Lars Larsen I have no problem with my Fuji log footage in resolve. Haven’t tried HLG yet but I will tomorrow.
Any particular reasons why you transcode your clips instead of using proxies?
Proxy workflow in premiere is slow and frustrating.
Damn that HLG looks good. Nice tutorial. I gotta say, I love working in Davinci Resolve though.
I still export in 264, makes sense as not all machines play nice with 265 yet!
@@MitchLally that's why I'm trying to see the point of shooting in 265.. is there really a difference in video quality?
Hey Mitch, question no one has seemed to ask or answer with HLG, for those of us who use a waveform monitor, do you happen to know what is the proper IRE value of 18% middle gray in HLG? In F-log? In Eterna? I can't seem to find this info anywhere and its very important for good consistent exposure
Great video! I need to use Lumetri Scopes more often from now! :) I hope Fuji can implement Vectorscopes in camera!
Thanks heaps, Mitch, that was great. Looks straightforward enough. How did you make your LUTs?
I use an app called "Look Converter" to take lightroom presets and convert them to LUTs. It is the most accurate app I've found and I've tried them all.
@@MitchLally Ah, too easy! Been using Lightroom for years and was Super happy when Lumetri controls came to Premiere because they felt so familiar, even though the results didn't really translate using the 60D's footage. Just got the X-T3 on the weekend and look forward to testing out HLG...and apparently now making my own LUTs. 🙏🙌
Can u make video Fuji xs10 f log color grade
I wonder what happens when you don’t use the input LUT. Has the footage a strange tint or what is going on then?
Yeah, it will definitely look quite green overall. Most log profiles shift the color space also (I'm guessing to somehow preserve color information?) and it needs to be corrected in most cases.
Mitch - this is great! Thank you for sharing. Will have to try this out today!
Renee Morrison thanks for watching!
Im a little confused as to why you applied the f-log to rec 709 to the HLG footage. Is the LUT applicable to both??
I explained it in the video - but to go a little further in depth, HLG seems to me to record in rec2020 which has a higher number of possible colours than 709. rec2020 contains a lot more colours in the green spectrum, so on a regular 709 display it looks a bit off. The LUT I chose is specifically one that changes the colour space from 2020 to 709. You’ll notice it doesn’t change the contrast in the image. The other luts will affect the luma values of the clip though.
@@MitchLally Hey, I was just implying I was under the impression that LUT supplied by fujifilm was specifically for F-LOG and not HLG?
Great video. I also enjoyed your previous XT3 settings video. I got 255GB XT3 video files from my last trip and will edit a video out of it soon. Thank you for your insights.
Atilla Taskiran wow! That’s a tonne of footage! Thanks for watching Atilla!
Hi I'm thinking about buying the X-T3 as a Bcam to my Canon c200 as the Eosr is seriously floored regarding video, what are your thoughts on matching the footage of the two cameras in post?
Many thanks.
Great HLG tutorial - thanks!
Did you talk about your f-log issues in any videos? In what situations did you experience it?
Teis Ravn-Jonsen I saw a lot of banding in a variety of situations - and color blocking. I don’t think log profiles work well with low bitrate codecs - maybe prores will work (like on the RED I have, log looks great in prores) but not h264 - it is simply too compressed.
Thank you so much for this video helped a lot! Can you share with us how you transcode the video from h265 to h264?
Constantinos Mitsopoulos he don’t transcode your h264. He probably transcode to prores with Adobe media encoder
I can not import h265 HLG footage from xt3 to premiere pro, please help :(
Your the best this video just made me improve my videos like so freaking much
Damn that's so good to hear mate!
Thank you for your video. Can you give the source videos from fujifilm? I think to buy fuji sooo want to see how to work with a picture in practice.
I would go for the BMPCC4K tbh and shoot raw for TV/Film. More flexible output options. DR might be similar but raw will always be king.
Not sure about Bpmcc4k from what I hear there is no more raw its now braw....maybe worth a looking into before you buy
I'm specifically looking for an HLG -> 709 LUT, not the misapplication of an FLOG LUT as this tutorial does :D
how did you change x4t h.265 format to prores?
Have you experienced overheating with the XT-3?
Stephen Weems never!
any recommendations for xt-20 picture profile?i dont have eterna and cant figure out whats better for color grading
Any ideas?
Anders Bråthen try to expose to the right !
@@skiiysstudio2815 Yes. I know. But I thought you could shoot HLG without "over exposing" it, like you have to on F-log on many cameras.
Anders Bråthen I think that rather than expecting the profile to be clean in high dynamic range scenes even in the shadows you should work on creating low dynamic range scenes by using lighting, reflectors and diffusion. This will enable you to retain more detail in your shot.
hi i just bought an xt 3 camera..the link you sent me for the lut only has two ..where can I get the rest thanks
hey, how do you convert your footage to pro res?
I will make a video on the 420/422/444 BS soon! Its just like the megapixel race in the still world. Codecs do matter but in reality most of us are posting to instagram or youtube where your videos literally get CRUSHED within an inch of their life haha.
@@MitchLally Not in the slightest Mitch. I'm just aware that it's very generous of people like you who take the time to put this kind of thing out there as someone who knows how much time and effort it takes, never mind the value of the info that is being given away.
Hi Mitch, why use the flog to flog 709?, is it ok to you flog lut with hlg?
Mohannad hammad Yes because the F-LOG lut I used is just a color space transform not gamma. I’m pretty sure f-log and hlg share the same color space so the LUT is compatible.
Using the free Fuji LUT on my HLG footage adds a lot of redness, which is especially bad on skintones. Any tips on how to prevent/work with this?
Sooooooo how do you transcode to prores?
I can't find an encoder that will do it.
XiiX Music Try using Davinci Resolve- search for a tutorial here on RUclips!
download Pavetube Video Convertor...its amazing.
How long you can record with HLG with one SD CARD ?
Thank you, Mitch. Very informative.
Andrei Bobovskii thanks for watching Andrei
Simply great
Was almost desperate and regretting to have shot f log. Thanks!!!!
nice vid man,
quick q; could i still get the HLG lut on an XT-2? maybe a lut?
Unfortunately you can’t get it in the camera - you’ll need to drop some cash on an xt3. But the F- LOG will serve you well in the meantime - you can use the exact same process I did here for HLG except your shadows and highlights will need to be pushed much further!
@@MitchLally This might be enough of a reason for me to upgrade. Thanks for the video!
Hey man, as a xt3 user, wanted to buy your lut pack, but where I live (turkey) paypal is has no service nor I can open an account.. do ya have an anotjer paying option :/
what lense do you use in this example ?
Mitakon 35mm 0.95
Do I have any chance to edit xt3 files on a basic 2017 MacBook Pro? 😬
CuckooClock yes if you transcode them to prores you should be fine! H265 doesn’t even playback smoothly on some of the more powerful PC configs.
nice, thank you, how do you convert your videos before import to premier?
I use Adobe Media Encoder, I drop all my footage in and select "Quicktime" as the format and select ProRes 422 HQ. I output at the same frame rate and resolution.
Really helpfull! Thanks a lot 😊
What do you transcode with?
I use Adobe Media Encoder, I drop all my footage in and select "Quicktime" as the format and select ProRes 422 HQ. I output at the same frame rate and resolution.
So wait? You shoot HLG but import a Fuji FLOG lut? Why not a HLG LUT? Or does Fujifilm not provide one?
J. T. Nope they don’t have one. It only transforms the colour to rec709 since HLG is something different.. maybe BT2020? Not sure.
I appreciate the fast response. Subscribed
Can xt2 or xh1 use HLG?
No they only have f-log
