Guys this is a long video! BUT it is packed with information - literally everything I have learned in the last 3 months shooting with the XT3! Great video man. Been following since Fuji sparked my interest with the xt2 and I watched all your Fuji content to get used to that camera. I’ve now been loving my xt3 for a few months and shooting video with it with much success. Best thing I got out of this video was your auto white balance lock. Never thought to try that but I’ll be using this all the time now! Now I have a tip to share back, I’ve been using my xt3 with the Atomos Ninja V for a few months now and I can honestly say there’s no going back. I know you had a Red camera so you’ll be able to appreciate the extra quality you can get when paired with that setup. Great video, keep the uploads coming!
Excellent breakdown of how to use the X-T3 for video. I've learned a few neat tricks here ! As an info trade, the natural live view thing is more aimed at studio photographers who use flashlights. Indeed, when you're shooting like that, most of the time, you expose depending on the power of the flashes, which means that in a dark environment like a studio, you're severely underexposed if you wanna watch through the evf in its normal state. Hence the natural live view option, which makes it as if you were looking at the scene naturally, with your eye, rather than a electric view that is directly influenced by your exposure settings (so you don't end up with a black screen when trying to compose your image)
It is funny how many other people have videos explaining how to set up your fuji camera for video and their videos look like crap. This video looks really nice and this is the tutorial that I will use to setup my xt3. Great job Mitch!
Following you for a while and This video really made my life easy. I did have few off my own setup. But just to give your setup a try now I cant go back to my previous setup.. This really changed everything for good. Thank you.

Hi Mitch, presumably you've figured out what Live View is by now, but just for anyone reading this, Live View is a flat representation of the image with no Film simulation applied, this way you can get a better idea of where the histogram actually lies within the raw file, because when a film sim is applied the histogram will reflect the film simulation. I think it’s important you use Intra-Frame for movie compression instead of Long-GOP setting if you’re doing color grading in post. It gets less color banding and will also run smoother on your editing software. There is an important difference.
@@MitchLally All Intra is way better, dude. I shoot pretty much exclusively with it at 400mb/s. It's technically "compressed" but having every frame as an I frame is much better for color grade flexibility. You're computer doesn't have decode all that info itself. I can't seem to remember, but isn't Long GOP only 8 bit whereas All I is 10 bit?
Caleb Hoenshell nope. Have you tested that theory? Because in the tests I’ve done theres no difference in the files for color grade ability - I actually struggle to understand what that means anyway? You mean less banding or macro blocking?
@@MitchLally Film major here, I recommend All-I for anything that has a lot of movement and just general Cinematic Video or anything video related that's not talking heads. Long-Gop is great for anything that's just talking heads because you wont be needing to be using all of that information. All-I takes up a lot more space but honestly is worth it and makes your computer work not nearly as hard when it comes to trying to decode the compression codec. Also H.265 is a lot smoother than h.264 anyway and with the amount of bit depth you're getting it's crazy.
Hi Mitch, thank you for this informative video, you helped me solve a couple of issues I had been wondering about on my XT3 that I hadn't seen mentioned in other tutorials, very helpful. The ISO lock and live view points particularly useful for me. Also not talked about much is the HLG setting, I do events and want something that is usable straight out of camera for speed and this setting and eterna are what I mostly use so glad you pointed that out as well. Keep up the good work, please consider doing a tutorial on your favourite Fuji lenses for video.
Hey Mitch, what card are you using for the XT3? Are you always shooting 4K HLG? If not, what is the frame rate and resolution you shoot most of the time?
Very informative, thanks from western Canada 🇨🇦. One thing I tried and didn't like is turning the EVF-LCD brightness up, gave me a false impression on what I was shooting. I leave mine at 0 manual, but I do shoot mainly stills and some video.
Man this was useful. Not sure if you're still shooting Fuji but there's one slightly helpful thing I can point out. You have Fn1 set to wifi. I do too but only when the camera is in playback mode. This allows me to set fn1 as something else for when I'm shooting.
Heyhey!! Really helpful. I just recently switched from old Canon to Fuji. I´ve been kind of lost with it but this really helped to set up some of those basic settings! Thanks!!
Hey man, love the vids. Quick question: What is the quickest way to switch from photo to video and reverse? Will cover a event shooting both and it's a bit of a challenge with the XT3. Any suggestions? Thanks!
First of all: thanks for sharing this great and very informative video. I'm new with X-T3. So it helped me a lot. Love to see your color grading with HLG files
Fuji is such a beaty, the film simulations, the handling with all the "vintage dials" and stuff bul still having all the cool new features like eye autofocus and stuff . It's light, it's a video monster. The only thing i thinking about switching are the lack of lenses from thrird party
Amazing tutorial! I would definitely like to see the HLG tutorial video, how do you work with the BT2020 files in 709 project - do you override the colorspace to 709 or do you use any translation lut (is there even any for Fuji?) And for the camera settings, Im going to have my XT3 in two days - how do you protect or see clipping of the highlights - by zebras (what settings?) or is there any highlight protection function? thank you!
LucasBeatz I already made a grading video that covers those topics :) - I do it by eye - experience with the camera will allow you to know where the limitations are.
Just joined the Fuji Team! Thank you so much for the video! You're the only with the proper knowledge i was looking for! I shoot a loot with the black magic pocket 4k and now this. I was wondering your work flow for going from h.265 to pro res? I edit a lot in both premiere and Resolve.. so I'm in the process of working through different methods for the transcoding efficiently but properly.
Whatup Mitch.. Quick question, can you elaborate a little bit on what you have your Dynamic Range on ? Also, I'm looking for a quick way to switch between shooting at 4K 24P + then slowmo at 60fps... First time on a Fuji camera, I have no clue a quick way to do that..
The Topshelf Company dr is on 100 - higher dr means using split iso and exposure blending I’m pretty sure - like a hdr type of thing. Not into that really it adds some grain and loss of detail. Not really a quick way that I can see apart from setting it to the top level on your my menu.
Hey Mate! Just got myself a Fuji X-T3 and its A M A Z I N G. Thanks so much for this video as it helps a lot. If you dont mind, could you please help me solve a problem with the video settings?: Everytime i take some photos or videos with the camera, it saves as 38 GB and im not sure if its supposed to take up that much storage or not. Cheers!
Drew Buckler all of the footage in the video was shot handheld with a shoulder rig and smoothed over with warp stabilizer set to 1%. I use a gimbal sometimes but I am really loving the look of handheld recently. I think one of the biggest misconceptions about making footage look ‘cinematic’ is that it has to be perfectly smooth and has to be on a gimbal.
While I know you're off of using Fujifilm cameras the dials are much faster to use then pulling your phone down and traversing the single-line, very linear, directory trees of the phone-ish UI. Because all the information from the knobs are in the EVF. Once you’re familiar enough with the knobs and have re-assigned what you need to whatever button, the changes you can make on the fly happen within the amount of time that you squander pulling the camera away from your face to look the screen...so you’re done adjusting waaaaayyyyy before you would start fingering through any menu trees.
The most important settings I was waiting to learn about was which movie setting to use! and where is the option for HLG anyway? I have no idea what setting to choose under Movie mode.
Thanks for the informative video. I have a few questions... what format is the most widely acceptable format for framerate? I saw that you had your xt3 set at 24p? Is that a very common setting you use? Next, what advantage is there to filming at a higher bitrate like 200mbps or 400mbps?
John Hughes depends on your country. If you’re only publishing to web 24 is fine. I use 24 for web and 25 for TV/broadcast. Advantage of higher bitrates is less compression artifacts and in some cases less banding. But in my opinion 200 is the sweet spot. 400 is overkill.
Hi Mitch, great content! I'm wondering since I'm kind of a hybrid photographer / videographer: if you also have a setup for photography? I'm new to fuji and I'm wondering which are the best settings for street and portrait/fashion photography?
Amazing video! Just ordered my Xt3! Which ND Filter are you using? Also a polarizer (CPL?) Is it possible to use a variable ND Filter PLUS a CPL Polarizer?
Great video Mitch... I finally got an X-T3 after selling off all of my Nikon gear. I have a v90 super fast card, but for some reason it doesn't let me record at 4k. Is there a setting that I'm missing?
thanks a lot,, very succinct and accessibly layed out for video !!! I plan on using 2 xt3s , one on tripod and one on redrock micro shoulder mount hopefully coming out with a nice segue from still to movement whenever I want
Hi Mitch, i have problem with exposure stepping up and down instead of smooth light to dark transition in run and gun style vdo? Anyway to fix that? Thanks
Kuro Wanna nope. The only way is to buy a lens with step-less aperture control. The mitakon 35mm 0.95 is a good example. Or any of the samyang ncs cs cine primes
Hi, on my X-T3, I set the AE-L button to AWB Lock but when I press on it, the little blue square AE-L doesn't show up like in your video...Any idea? Thanks
Hi Mitch, thanks for your excellent video, really helpful! I'm a photographer and have been using the Fuji XT3 for photography for a couple of years now. However, I'm totally new to video. I followed your video along, but came across a problem, that I haven't been able to solve. I can't access in my "Movie Settings" "Film Simulation" along with five other settings (B & W adj., dynamic range, highlight tone, shadow tone, color). They appear light grey as opposed to the ones that I can access that are white. I'm a bit desperate and hope you can help. Many thanks in advance and best wishes from Switzerland!
I am looking to upgrade from my Nikon D3300 to a more advanced camera with better video capabilities. I am looking to do interviews, mini-docs and short films. Should I go with the XT3 or the XT30?
F*ckin lifeeee saver dude, really dreaded using that owners manual but this got me to the most useful tips right away and im really appreciative for that!
Mitch I love all the work you are doing! I was wondering since you have canon glass and a Fujifilm X-T3 if you could do some reviews of adapters like Fringer and Viltrox it would be greatly appreciated. If you own any Tamron SP G2’s that would be bonus amazing. I’m interested in seeing the VC and AF in video
DeMasi Studios okay cool. I only have one canon lens the 100mm f2. Its an older lens and not many people have it. I have a friend with a 16-35 f2.8 L and some other zooms. I might try with those.
Mitch Lally that would be amazing! Sorry I saw your beach model shoot and thought you had a bunch of canon glass but I look forward to it if you could pull that together
Hello! Thank you for the perfect instructions! But I just made the same settings now and then found out that my ISO can't switch lower than 640, can you help me with this please? Why did it happen with ISO?
I think its a great idea to hang onto the XH1 - it's a very capable camera and the 4K is still more detailed than the other brands plus you have a great codec in there. I wouldn't hold out for 4K 60p though because you might be disappointed. I have a feeling Fuji needed to upgrade its processor in the XT3 to accommodate for this.
hey Mitch, have you tried using the webill gimbal? i wonder if you know the difference between your plus gimbal and the webill.. im thinking of getting the webill but there's also the V2 that is much more cheaper. I do a lot of travelling (backpacking)and want to get a travel gimbal . thanks!
Need some advice, I got into photography a year ago and bought an m50 been using that camera ever since. I have grown a lot and have since and there are many things I don't like about it it's low like capabilities for example and canons less features compared to competition. I want to upgrade and get into a some film, I am very interested in this or the xt30, What do u guys recommend?
I think the XT30 is amazing. But if you have the extra cash go for the XT3 - it has slow motion recording in 4K which the XT30 does not - but if you're happy with FHD for your slow mo shots the XT30 is the move - apparently at release the continuous autofocus is going to be even better than the XT3 which is amazing! Fuji are making moves in the video world!
Great video. I have a question. I put my camera on my gimbal. My video options are 4K 30 FPS. I put focus, aperture and ISO in auto and my shutter speed at 60. As I record video I notice that there is a lot flickering in my video footage. It goes from light to dark and it’s mostly noticeable as the lighting situation changes like when I walk from outdoors to indoors. It completely ruins the video. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for this video! But I just came across another problem. So when I choose the F-Log setting, my Iso goes yellow and I cant go under 640. Why does this locks the iso at 640 and how do I unlock it? thanks

Would love to see how you grade footage with the HLG profile.
Awesome vid bro
Just switched from Sony to Fuji and this video definitely helps alot.
Oh boy, i learned a few thing here!!!!........ More more video centric stuff!
Glad you enjoyed!
I LOVED that grade at the beginning showreel!
And I like how you use your phone as a second camera, it's well-done in terms of quality and watchability!
Great video! Good stuff to consider even for seasoned users
Amazing video! Just ordered my Xt3! Which ND Filter are you using? Also a polarizer (CPL?) Is it possible to use a variable ND Filter PLUS a CPL Polarizer?
Yeah you can stack filters. I am using a Hoya vari ND on my 35mm
Mitch Lally A vari ND PLUS a Polarizer at the same time is working for you without having a bad image?
I don’t usually use both at the same time. But no stacking filters won’t give you a bad image.
Great video Mitch... I finally got an X-T3 after selling off all of my Nikon gear. I have a v90 super fast card, but for some reason it doesn't let me record at 4k. Is there a setting that I'm missing?
Nicely explained
Thank you for sharing this 😊
Great video! Thank you!
Very good video. Thanks. Can you help me? My Symbol is not visible. I am not sure why.
Excellent video!
Very good Demo! Gratulation!
Yes please to HLG tutorial! Can you cover how you expose correctly too maybe? Great videos 😁
Jonathan Whitley fantastic idea - exposure is very important!
Agreed!
Hey! I just uploaded a new video on colour grading! Make sure you go check it out.
Mitch Lally that’s great - thanks so much for letting me know!
thanks a lot,, very succinct and accessibly layed out for video !!!
Thanks
Considering you’re pretty much locked on to the minimum iso the camera chooses based on your settings, do you use nd filters for daylight?
Hi Thanks for the video full of information. Can you recommend a ND filter for the 35mm F1.4 lenses vor video shooting. Thanks
Hey Mitch! Can i ask how can you change the mode from taking a picture to a video thanks
I am getting the XT3 to shoot videos of my dogs. Which 2 lenses would you recommend? One for indoor and one for outdoor. Thank you in advance.
Same issue here. Did you find a solution?
@@mardarie Hi! No, unfortunately I've not found a solution to this issue yet. I guess you haven't either?
yes we wanna see grading the hlg fuji footage
Hey! I just uploaded a new video on colour grading! Make sure you go check it out.
I am looking to upgrade from my Nikon D3300 to a more advanced camera with better video capabilities. I am looking to do interviews, mini-docs and short films. Should I go with the XT3 or the XT30?
really helpful - thank you!
Glad you enjoyed mate!
I have the fuji xt3. What settings are your camera now? Shooting THIS video for the tutorial? Mine focus is moving all the time.
Thank you so much, it was very helpful!
The most informative video of the year! Thx!
KingCanon damn, thank you!!
Thanks for a great video Mitch. If I'm shooting in LOG or HLG, would you advise using a LUT for onscreen viewing, and how to do that?
Jonny Cohen not really, use the profile as is to judge exposure etc. you can’t actually add a LUT to fuji cameras.
love this!! Very helpful :)
Very helpful thank you
Buatin foto setting di fuji X-T3 dong
Thanks, Very good video,
F*ckin lifeeee saver dude, really dreaded using that owners manual but this got me to the most useful tips right away and im really appreciative for that!
Perfect! Thank you so much
Mitch I love all the work you are doing!
Brus this has a Nicky Table vibe 👌🏽
Hello! Thank you for the perfect instructions! But I just made the same settings now and then found out that my ISO can't switch lower than 640, can you help me with this please? Why did it happen with ISO?
640 is the base ISO for HLG! It provides the best dynamic range and noise peformance!
@@MitchLally Thank you! :)
I'm holding on strong to my X-H1. Hoping they give us some much needed firmware updates that makes it worth keeping instead of jumping to the T3.
I do a lot of travelling (backpacking)and want to get a travel gimbal . thanks!
Thanks Mitch
I'd love to see a video on how you grade Fuji HLG.
Coming soon :)
Hey! I just uploaded a new video on colour grading! Make sure you go check it out.
Auto iso! Don’t use auto lol
Thanks for this video!
But I just came across another problem. So when I choose the F-Log setting, my Iso goes yellow and I cant go under 640. Why does this locks the iso at 640 and how do I unlock it? thanks
Great, very helpful, thanks. ML Grades XT3 HLG - yes, please!
Chris will do!
