Just purchased my XT3 yesterday. This video really helped me out a lot! Thanks. Got my camera used. Didnt want to go for the XT4 since i dont think i’ll need the newer features. Got it for $1400 CAD, it came with 3 batteries, 1 battery grip, L shaped bracket, grip mount, all chargers, all original manuals and packaging and a book on photography(gift from the seller.). What a deal!! i simply need to get lenses.
Just switched from Canon to the all-glorious Fuji XT3 and I’ve never been happier! I’m looking into shooting weddings with it so this video couldn’t have arrived at a better time! Someone with a Canon 5DMark iii actually told me I should “go buy a full frame body instead if I want to shoot weddings” LOL. Anyway, I’m grateful for this video, thank you!
Awesome! I'm glad you found this at the right time. Yeah shooting weddings with Fujifilm is totally legit. I've been doing it for about 3 years now with Fuji (5 in total) the "go buy a FF body if you're doing weddings is old school thinking. Good luck with weddings!
I just got my XT3 yesterday and you have been amazing! You're an awesome instructor! Thank you so much! You're also the reason I made the switch from Cannon to Fujifilm X :)
Hi! I have been following you for a while, and just switch from Nikon to Fujifilm (XT4) and I absolutely love it, I'm a huge fan of your work, you inspired me and finally made my decision, Gracias!
I’ve had my XT3 for a while and am comfortable with it after a lot of experimentation/manual reading, but I found your video really concise and practical. Nice work!
I've just switched from Sony/Nikon to xt-3. Decided not to wait for xt4. Thanks so much for this vid! Hope it will help me get on well with new camera faster.
Awesome! I made this video for that exact fact. The hardest thing for me when first starting out was the menus. But once I got used to that it was a breeze.
I just love how you can setup the camera you like to. I set up mine a little bit more now and I feel more confident/safe for daily use when I can change ISO etc quick. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.
Excellent tutorial...i'm a late bloomer; just ordered my XT3 (after cancelling the XT4) w/grip and the somewhat expensive batteries! Thanks for sharing!
Really lovely video, consider me subscribed. I would like to offer a suggestion, even though you're in "America", for photography purposes to consider switching your guides from feet to meters. The reason is twofold: first, a lot of portrait lens have a min focusing distance of 1m. So, if you can get used to knowing what 1m is, it becomes SUPER handy esp when shooting in fast, close-range events like receptions and parties. For example, if you're handling a camera that sucks with AF in super low light even though you're using a flash, you can set the manual focus distance to 1 or 1.5 meters and just shoot everything based on physical distance (this is an old school film photog's trick and it's much, must faster to work this way) couple this with a wide aperture like F5.6 or F8 will ensure that you will nail more shots than you'll miss with a nice wide depth of field. The other reason knowing 1m minimum is super handy outdoors; whenever you're manually focusing and doing street photography at a wider aperture like F8, it's much easier to extrapolate distances based on a factor of 10 (meters) than a factor of 12 (feet to a yard). For example, let's say you're photographing me across a one way street in NYC; is it easier for you to guess that is 22 feet or 7 meters? A yard is about the same as a meter but there are no yards on a lens... If you know the minimum distance of 1m (it's basically one big step forward or backward), you can pace out meters in steps without a ruler. Then you know a one lane street is 7 meters from sidewalk to sidewalk, a 2 lane street maybe 10 meters. Operating with smaller numbers and knowing 1, 3, 5-10 meters will give you so much more confidence about sniping in virtually any conditions. Think about it!
Thank you so much for the tips!!! Bout to change that and start getting used to it now. Y’all need to follow this man. He is a master!! Instagram: @simbarashecha
Hey man, this is such a useful video, thank you. I had a quick question. Please could you explain how you use auto focus / manual focus during a wedding? At which points during the day are you using auto focus, and how are you using it AF-S or AF-C, with single point or zone? How big do you set your focus point? The same question applies to manual focus, when do you use this, and are you using back button focus? Any help is appreciated, thank you, Edd

Hi John. Enjoyed rue video and looking for more info about lighting system that u use for wedding. Recommendations? I probably will switch to Fuji from Canon so... a bit concerned about light as in speedlites
I strongly suggest, that if you wish to extract the best out of your Fujifilm RAW images, use Capture One Pro. The differences between Lightroom and Capture One are flagrant. No wormy artifacts, much cleaner output, almost MF look and definitely on par with many FF systems. Of course, Nikon, Canon, etc, can use Lightroom with no problem. It is only Fujifilm that has problems in Lightroom. I know, I use two major systems, Nikon FF (4 bodies) and Fujifilm (5 bodies, 3 x X-T3's, X-H1 and X-T20).
Thanks for the suggestion. I've been looking into Capture One for some time now. I haven't gotten there yet mainly because I have my workflow down currently and I don't want to meess up my whole process. But maybe soon.
X-T30 is a hard one for weddings for me. Mainly because there's not as many buttons so you can't be as fast. I'm still trying to find the best layout for the fastest shooting with the X-T30. But I couldn't see myself using it at a wedding. An engagement or portrait shoot it'd be perfect.
Thank you for this video... can i ask you something? What are your thoughts about fuji's xs10? Please? Can you please make a video for it? Btw, i came from other brands so, maybe this could help me and other viewers out there .. Thanks.
Hi John, Thanks so much for this video with your menu-settings of the X-T3! I'm a big fan of yours, and so i had to see what kind of setup you're using. I am also very curious about your other settings on the camera. For instance whether you set anything on Automatic, or are you 100% manual all the way always? And most importantly your focus settings. I never ever see you change your focal point or change the size of your focus field. How do you manage to take such incredibly sharp pictures then? I do a bit of model shooting as a hobby, and I'm a keen Fuji user (the X-T2 for now), but I'm constantly changing the focus point. Maybe I shouldn't be doing this? Thanks so much for any response you might have on this. Thank you and greetings from Belgium, Luc
I usually have 2 bodies on me when I'm shooting a wedding. My preferred lenses are the 14mm f/2.8 23mm f/2 35mm f/2 and 56 f/1.2. I have a video coming next week where I go over what's in my bag. Make sure to check it out!
Just bought an XT-3 and I'm very excited. I'm a huge RAW fan, having recently gotten used to editing them from my old Canon DSLR and realizing just how more versatile they are. Is there *any* advantage to using uncompressed RAW files, you said you don't lose info with compression?
The only advantage I've seen in the uncompressed RAW is that more devices know what it is. For example, when importing on my iPad I don't see the photo previews at first until I import because it can't really view the compressed RAW photos. Other than that I haven't really seen anything else that's different.
Hey John! Awesome video. How do you like to set up your two memory cards, sequencial...backup? I've only ever had 1 slot until today so interested on your thoughts. Thanks very much :)
Hi Hi. It usually depends on what I’m shooting. But for a wedding day or engagement session it’s always backup. That way I have 2 copies of the wedding the moment I’m done. Then I also make multiple copies after that. If I’m just shooting around the house and things I’ll just use sequential for that.
John Branch IV Photography used to use an xt10 and would constantly fear using it for that simple reasone during weddings. Just got an xt3 and saw that it’s still there haha thanks for the reply though
Hi John, I don't know if anybody else has said this so forgive me if they have, but you mentioned in your video how you don't change the colour space when shooting in Raw. In the video it was set to srgb. Maybe it was a mistake but you really should be shooting in Adobe colour space and converting afterwards to srgb once processed purely for web viewing. I'm sure you knew this and it is probably a mistake but I just couldn't help noticing it.
I’ve actually always heard that Adobe RGB isn’t much of a difference and since everything ends up sRGB anyways it just makes sense to stay in that space. Here are a couple of articles as well. www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4036982 kenrockwell.com/tech/adobe-rgb.htm
I wasn't originally planning on it but I think I will. I've had a fair amount of experience with the newer f/2 lenses since I've been using them for a couple of years now.
Great video. As you use bbf do u leave the front dial on m or do u leave it on s. Trying to get back into back button focusing and read lots of people use it differently
Love your work bro! Do you use only Lighroom for editing? People say Capture One is way better for Fuji RAW Files because it can handle the Fuji Sensor Pattern better than Lightroom can! Would appreciate if you could help me! Thank you! Keep up the great job man! And btw: I am thinking of switching from my X-H1 to the X-T2 or maybe the X-T3. You think the overall speed is worth the money spend on the X-T3?
Thanks a bunch. Currently, I'm only using Lightroom for editing but I've had my eyes on Capture One for a while now. My workflow is just so set in stone that as a wedding photographer it would be pretty huge to switch my editing system and slow myself down. For switching cameras I've neveer used the X-H1 so I'm not sure how it compares. But the X-T3 is deff the better choice out of the X-T2. The quality, and focusing are just THAT much better.
Hi John. How do you normally set your AF-C settings, to Focus or Release Priority? Regarding setting the AUTO ISO to a specific "highest" allowed ISO setting forget it, if the sensor detects that there is not enough light the camera will simply IGNORE your settings and will crank up ISO for you. Either that or it will choose a really low shutter speed and your photos are ruined. You have to be extremely careful when you set up AUTO ISO and you have to know what you're doing if you don't want really noisy and degraded looking images. And by the way most cameras do the same thing.
I'm buying a camera in the next month but I'm still wondering if I should get the XT3 or the A7iii. I'm mainly shooting videos (music videoclips, music shows and also documentary work). I love to take photo too. If I wanted only to take photos I'd grab the XT3 in a heartbeat but I'm scared of its low light capabilities. Shooting music shows and clips I'm often in low light condition. Can someone help me?
I've always been super happy with the Fuji's low light performance. I mean I mainly shoot weddings so I'm in low light very often. I'm curious what did you end up going with?
Out of curiosity do you always use your histogram to figure out your exposure or do you watch your exposure compensation scale? I feel like I usually underexpose on my Fuji. What you see is what you get isn’t exactly true. Sometimes it depends how bright your lcd or evf is. Thank you!
Yes. They're basically the same cameras. So most of the settings you see me switching here you can also do on the X-T30. I have an X-T30 as well which I love and getting used to the X-T3 menus helped me ease into the X-T30 as well.
John Branch IV Photography just posted a few shots on my Instagram chucksphotography just started following you as well. I will be purchasing your preset soon gotta download the RAW converter since I’m using Lightroom 6 and it doesn’t support raw files
If someone sees this: change your color space to adobe rgb or the largest color space your camera can produce! Its better to work on a wide space and then change it in post! Look what color spaces your camera has, then search for what’s the largest one and go with! Especially if you work with prints, you HAVE to do this
And if you get to choose 8 bit or 16 bit, go for the 16. Most cameras only make it through 12, but those 4 bits translates into millions if colors you can’t afford to lose
I do. I'm a huge fan of the Godox v860ii. I actually talk about them in this video a little bit ruclips.net/video/SotlvOKK2Co/видео.html. The nice thing about this flash as well is it talks to itself so you can use it as a trigger for other flashes as well. Typically I'll have 2 off-camera flashes and 2 on camera.
when you’re editing your photos in light room in the develop section do you see something that lets you choose camera matching? That’s how you get to your film simulations from your Fuji camera. You can also set the settings so that when you import it will automatically pull in the film simulation as well.
Yeah it seemed like everything worked on it alright. I ended up switching to Godox so that I could have something officially for Fuji and also to get some OCF triggers.
Since I’m a wedding photographer I tend to not really use face detection at all because there’s too many faces around while doing a wedding. However, when I’m doing just RUclips content I’ll just use face detection. I feel like it’s just easier and quicker but honestly there’s no big reason. I haven’t really tried the eye detection too much.
Hey bro! Please help me out, just picked an xt3 up with the battery grip! Can I get 3rd party battery’s or should I stick to the original Fuji battery’s?
Lewis Ashley I have 3 party batteries for back up and the work well I also purchased two new fuji batteries to go along with the one that came with the camera
At this point I would say the X-T3. Especially if you’re going to be doing any video work. The X-T3 is just an overall better contender and they also have kind of disowned the X-H1
I just like the way it looks overall. It changes the previews so if I show a couple a back of camera preview or just seeing the photos on my camera I can see them a certain way.
I don’t think so, but you can set your back dial to activate focus. Just keep the disp/back button pressed and assign the af-on option to the back dial. Apart from rotating it, you can also press it!
@@jbivphotography thx for the reply. yeah, I came to the same conclusion. For some reason my thumb gravitates there for BB focus, but, I'm gradually getting better.
Any help with product photography settings, I'm using *A* for all my settings and have everything on default on the menu but some of my images come out dark but some come out really good, any help? I'm using a fuji 18-55mm lens
The biggest thing with product photography since you're controlling all of the settings is you'll need to get out of the A setting. The camera is guessing a little too much when you're in A. If you set your camera up the way I have it you'll be able to control all of the settings and make them the way you want them to be rather than the camera selecting it itself.
I tend to move the point around using the stick for most of the day. The only time I change is if I need to do constant focus with people walking towards me and things. When I’m doing that I use area focus.
John Branch IV Photography thank you! So you do not focus and recompose? I tend to photograph kids running around mostly and moving the focus point around tends to be too slow for me...I would use zone but I’m afraid that with a shallow depth of field that it’ll focus on something in the background instead but I’ll give it a try! Thank you for all of your replies and wisdom!
@@kristiejochim3170 When I'm unable to move the point around I do typically focus and recompose. If I can help it I try not to because I feel that I miss the focus sometimes but it's the next type of focusing I do if I'm unable to move the point. I'm not a huge fan of zone and continuous. I don't trust my camera enough. lol
Most of the weddings on my website are the X-T2 since I recently upgraded to the X-T3. But I've shot a good handful of weddings so far using the X-T3 and LOVE it!
can't believe he skipped the color space... i took a digital printing background so i know a bit about the importance of color.. and you WOULD WANT to change it to Adobe RGB it gives you more range when it comes to editing ..unless you just want to post photos on a website and not make them into prints then you can just keep to sRGB but its the same as like i will want to shoot jpeg ONLY for everything where instead u could have picked RAW +JPEG and still ahve the option to edit if you need to
From what I've heard and looked into sRGB is just fine. You're not really gaining too much more with Adobe RGB. It's kind of an "old wives tale" that Adobe RGB gives better photos from my research.

I don't believe so. That's the scariest option. I usually just stay away from the trash icon for that exact reason.

I’m way late to this, but I’m renting the XT-3 as my second body for a wedding. Do you use lossless compressed? Or just regular compressed?
ordered mine an enjoyed this will you be doing anything on lenses you use.
I wasn't originally planning on it but I think I will. I've had a fair amount of experience with the newer f/2 lenses since I've been using them for a couple of years now.
Thank you for putting this together!
Happy to help out. I think I might try out some stuff with profile settings next.
Hey man! I met you at the Forever Bridal show last year. You enjoying your XT3?
BLAST FROM THE PAST! I’m LOVING the X-T3. I wasn’t sure if I was just wasting money by upgrading but it was SUCH a good upgrade from the X-T2
Great video. As you use bbf do u leave the front dial on m or do u leave it on s. Trying to get back into back button focusing and read lots of people use it differently
I'm usually using my BBF as either S mode or C. That way in C I can just hold it down on the back and then fire my shutter when needed.
John, question - do you just use the aperture ring on lens to change aperture ?
Yes
I am hooked with my XT3....I love my 5D4 but I just cannot detach myself from my Fuji.
There really is just something about the Fuji system. It's so fun to use!
For portability, ergonomics, price, video and colors go Fuji.
If you want full frame, autofocus and better low light go Sony.
I've always been super happy with the Fuji's low light performance. I mean I mainly shoot weddings so I'm in low light very often. I'm curious what did you end up going with?
hi John! 425 points is only available in single point focus? Do you the joy stick to focus instead of let the camera handling the focus automatically?
That's a beautiful camera!
Out of curiosity do you always use your histogram to figure out your exposure or do you watch your exposure compensation scale? I feel like I usually underexpose on my Fuji. What you see is what you get isn’t exactly true. Sometimes it depends how bright your lcd or evf is. Thank you!
Nice man! big learning curve coming from my Sony NEX7.
Awesome video. What camera do you record with? :)
I was using the X-T3 to record this. I currently have 2 and also an X-T30
Sweet! Planing on making a marketing video for my wedding business, using my X-T3 ☺️
@@blomquist.j Awesome. Yeah all of the videos on my channel are shot with the X-T3 or X-T30 and it's all straight out of camera no color correcting.
Great vedio yeas I just switch to fuji bought my first fuji camera 📷 xt30 and I really like it .. is it x3 and xt30 similar? I know the x3 better
Yes. They're basically the same cameras. So most of the settings you see me switching here you can also do on the X-T30. I have an X-T30 as well which I love and getting used to the X-T3 menus helped me ease into the X-T30 as well.
Is it possible to charge 3 batteries with powerbank?
Just went through my xt3, thanks for the video
Dope! Hope these settings help you in the future.
John Branch IV Photography just posted a few shots on my Instagram chucksphotography just started following you as well. I will be purchasing your preset soon gotta download the RAW converter since I’m using Lightroom 6 and it doesn’t support raw files
@@bigbrooklyn25 Dope. I'm going to check them out.
Why i am watching this. I dont have even fujifilm camera! :) And still watching! GAS incoming.
Thanks so much!
Love your channel !
Thank you so much!
Good for newbies maybe. not for photographers. Who needs film sims in camera when you can apply them later to raw files with software?
That's true. However you may as well get them set up so you can use it whenever you want.
Do you recommend any flash for the xt3?
Have Color chrome effect in fujifilm XT2 sir?
Hey! Thanks for the informative video. At your video 2:21 you went under LR to change the film simulation.. how do I get there on my LR?! Thanks!
when you’re editing your photos in light room in the develop section do you see something that lets you choose camera matching? That’s how you get to your film simulations from your Fuji camera. You can also set the settings so that when you import it will automatically pull in the film simulation as well.
You mentioned using a Canon flash. Is that all manual? Does it do HSS or TTL at all? Thanks.
Yeah it seemed like everything worked on it alright. I ended up switching to Godox so that I could have something officially for Fuji and also to get some OCF triggers.
Thanks John! JUst bought one so this is very helpful
Awesome!! You’re going to enjoy your X-T3 sooo much.
@@jbivphotography Thanks! Yes, seems a bit overwhelming at the moment but slowly slowly !
Hey John, don't you use the Eye-Detection on the X-T3? As it looks like you 'only' use Face Detection. Can you tell me why please?
Thx
Since I’m a wedding photographer I tend to not really use face detection at all because there’s too many faces around while doing a wedding. However, when I’m doing just RUclips content I’ll just use face detection. I feel like it’s just easier and quicker but honestly there’s no big reason. I haven’t really tried the eye detection too much.
We def have a similar setup. 🙌🏼
Great minds think alike.
How to matching film simulation on lighroom pc ?
Really helpful video, thanks!
Awesome! Glad that helped out.
I would like to know how you edit Fuji files in LR
Awesome. I'll make sure to put that in my video pipeline.
I heard there was a recent problem with the latest firmware that if the battery died it removed all your saved settings, does it affect your camera?
OH NOOO. That's the worst. I've never had that happen to me. Also, as a wedding photographer I rarely have batteries dying on me.
No issue with mine either, I’ve had batteries die and I when not in use my xt3 will have the battery removed... no problems with settings.
Amazing thank you
Glad this helped out!
Excellent video!
Thanks a bunch!
so you always used classic chorome?
Yep yep. Classic Chrome is my jam. I love the way it looks.
hey john,
im sony user, I want switched to fuji for wedding, xt3 or xh1 for wedding photography?
At this point I would say the X-T3. Especially if you’re going to be doing any video work. The X-T3 is just an overall better contender and they also have kind of disowned the X-H1
I wonder why you modified highlight, shadow and sharpness if youre shooting raw.. Its the same thing as film sims, does not affect the raw file
I just like the way it looks overall. It changes the previews so if I show a couple a back of camera preview or just seeing the photos on my camera I can see them a certain way.
QCCanales yep
Is there multiple exposure control option like xpro3 in xt3?
Do you mean like bracketing? There is a mode like that but I'm not familiar with how the XPro series does it.
So, if someone knows this, it would change my life...
...is there any way to reconfigure the Q button to be Back Button Focus?
I don’t think so, but you can set your back dial to activate focus. Just keep the disp/back button pressed and assign the af-on option to the back dial. Apart from rotating it, you can also press it!
Yeah I don't believe you can. I switched my AF-L button to be my back button focusing.
@@jbivphotography thx for the reply.
yeah, I came to the same conclusion. For some reason my thumb gravitates there for BB focus, but, I'm gradually getting better.
I cannot get the front command to change aperture. Tried just about everything. Can you help me
Did I hear right? You’re using Canon Flashes on the Fuji?
Any help with product photography settings, I'm using *A* for all my settings and have everything on default on the menu but some of my images come out dark but some come out really good, any help? I'm using a fuji 18-55mm lens
The biggest thing with product photography since you're controlling all of the settings is you'll need to get out of the A setting. The camera is guessing a little too much when you're in A. If you set your camera up the way I have it you'll be able to control all of the settings and make them the way you want them to be rather than the camera selecting it itself.
If I can afford to switch to Fuji xt3, I would tbh
amazing!!!
awesome!
Thanks!
Love your content but please set a custom white balance. The change in the video drives me crazy lol
Do you really have your color space in sRGB instead of Adobe RGB?
Raw files do not matter space color, this is only jpeg.
@@ManuelPadillaEstevez Thanks for the answer, I always though that color space do matter for the RAW file.
I've also researched into it and have found there's not much of an advantage to switching it to RGB. Basically it's kind of an old myth at this point.
thank u sir love u
Since you use back button focus do you tend to focus and recompose a lot or do you move your focus point around with the joystick?
I don't trust my camera enough. lol
I switch over to Fujilove
Welcome to #teamfuji I hope you’re enjoying it.
John Branch IV Photography Colour lovely that have been my experience with Fujilove so far.
Hi!
Have your weddings been shot with Fuji XT3?
Most of the weddings on my website are the X-T2 since I recently upgraded to the X-T3. But I've shot a good handful of weddings so far using the X-T3 and LOVE it!
thanks ;)
@@jbivphotography
I don’t understand going through all the settings with no examples?
can't believe he skipped the color space...
i took a digital printing background so i know a bit about the importance of color.. and you WOULD WANT to change it to Adobe RGB it gives you more range when it comes to editing ..unless you just want to post photos on a website and not make them into prints then you can just keep to sRGB but its the same as like i will want to shoot jpeg ONLY for everything where instead u could have picked RAW +JPEG and still ahve the option to edit if you need to
From what I've heard and looked into sRGB is just fine. You're not really gaining too much more with Adobe RGB. It's kind of an "old wives tale" that Adobe RGB gives better photos from my research.
Great video and info but the music distracts me from getting concentrated!!

I have just ordered X-T3 with Viltrox 1.4 lenses and I want to switch from my Sony A7R iii and Sigma 24mm 1.4 + Sony 85mm 1.8. Hope I wont be disappointed with AF and processing of images. Thanks for your videos that pushed me to order X-T3 :-)) and if it is gonna be ok for me i will switch A7R III for second body X-T4.
