  • Hello and welcome back to the channel. Today we are making Two Feijoa Desserts | Ice Cream and Cheesecake. Let me tell you just how delicious they are! I just know you are going to love them.
If you don't have feijoa in your country you can use other fruit pulp you may wish to use to make both these recipes.
    Feijoa Ice Cream
    500mls of whipping cream
1 tin (395g) of Sweetened Condensed Milk
1/2 a cup of feijoa Pulp (follow video instructions on how this is made)
Place all ingredients into a bowl and whip until it comes together like whipped cream. Don't over beat.
place the ice cream into a freezable container and place some cling film or paper over the top of the ice cream. Place into the freezer and enjoy once frozen. (No need to stir at all)
Leave on the counter for 5-10 minutes before serving. Feel free to use more feijoa pulp if you have more. You could also stir some into the top layer.
    Feijoa Cheesecake
    Filling
Two 250gm cream cheese tubs (room temperature)
    500ml of whipping cream
1/4 cup of icing sugar (powdered sugar)
    Juice of 1/2 a lemon
1/2 cup to 1 cup of Feijoa Pulp
Beat the cream cheese and sugar together until fluffy.
Add the lemon juice and Feijoa Pulp and mix again
In a separate bowl whip the cream until it forms peaks and is light and fluffy but be careful not to overwork.
Add The whipped cream to the cream cheese mix and fold it in carefully to not lose all the air the cream has.
    Base
1 packet of plain sweet biscuits (250gm)
bash the biscuits in a bag until it is a crumb
Melt 100g butter add to the base and mix until combined
Place the base in a spring-form baking paper-lined tin. Press into the tin and bake for 10 mins in a 180c oven.
Make sure the base is fully cold before putting the Cheesecake mix over the base.
You can put some more feijoa pulp over the top of the cheesecake if you wish.
The cheesecake is best eaten the next day as the richness mellows out. You could also try making it in the morning for eating that evening.

I use your ice cream recipe to make a no bake key lime pie. I totally agree no bake desserts always seem to taste much better the next day. I know that preparing, filming and editing each episode is a time consuming process. I appreciate your channel and all the work that goes into the production.

My lovely late Mum preserved feijoas on the farm. She preserved everything you can imagine. Tomatoes, made preserved homemade spaghetti, so much stone fruit, apple, apple and rhubarb. She was a marvel at how she could do so much and also help on the farm, run into town for parts for haybalers, tractors and the like during summer, make lunches for family and hired contractors etc all summer. Sandwiches, scones, muffins, banana and chocolate cakes and every slice you could imagine, also included homemade lemon cordial.

I have lived in my house in Australia for nearly 40 years but it was only in 2013 I found out the strange green fruit tree was a feijoa! I looked in an exotic fruit/veg book but had no luck then by chance I came across them in a local supermarket. They are starting to appear now and up until I discovered this video had no idea what to do with them. I thought maybe stirring the pulp into plain yoghurt might be nice but have failed to find any ideas. I love the cheesecake and if I get enough fruit on the tree I will have a go at making it, the ice cream sounds easy too. I am from the UK and had never heard of them. Thank you for these two recipes and I look forward to seeing what else you can do with them, they all tend to drop off the tree at the same time so this year I intend to do something with them 😊

Thank you Stacey. Many years ago when my three boys were little, we had feijoa trees and there were very few recipes that you could make. I so miss my feijoa trees!! Five years ago I did see them start to appear in a few Aussie fruit shops when I was there visiting family but they had not seen them. I love them. My boys loved when I halved them, scooped out the contents, then covered them and refrigerated overnight. They softened and were just so nice. They need no sugar done this way or any way in my mind. Just so nice for breakfast or desserts. Yum with ice cream!! 😊

LOVE FIJOA! I have 2 small trees I've planted and just starting to get fruit.
One way I like to use them is in an apple crumble, I'm not a fan of cooked apples so mixing in fijoa (or rhubarb, even done it with peaches and plums) let's me enjoy crumbles again.
I caramelize some sugar and and butter and a touch of cream and reduce it down a bit (careful not to burn), cool it down slightly and mix through chopped up apples and fijoas for the crumble I like adding some toasted oats and coconut for extra texture and flavor, just add a little extra butter as the oats will absorb some of it.

When I had a feijoa tree, I used to make feijoa jam during the annual glut. When you were making the cheesecake, I was thinking that a thin layer of feijoa jam would make a nice topping.
I wish I'd had your ice cream recipe back then.
My favorite way to cook feijoas was feijoa brown Betty. I don't know if you have apple brown Betty in NZ? It's similar to an apple crisp. I just substituted diced feijoa for the apple.
You make a mixture of equal parts bread crumbs, brown sugar, and chopped nuts (I usually used walnuts), with some cinnamon and a little bit of cardamom. In a greased baking dish, you layer the chopped feijoa and crumb mixture, starting with fruit and ending with crumbs, making 2 or 3 layers. Then you dot the top with butter and bake it in a moderate oven (that's 350°F here) until the fruit is soft, the top is brown and crisp and it's bubbly around the edges.
I would hesitate to give most people such a non-recipe, but I know you cook that way, too. 😀

I have never seen feijoas here, but we have a store called Central Market that tends to carry more 'exotic" types of things - they had a $30 pineapple recently - so next time I'm there I'm going to look. When are they in season? Safe travels home and thanks for another smashing vid!

    • @ixchelkali
      @ixchelkali 4 месяца назад

The problem with feijoas is that they don't ship well, because they don't keep well once they're off the tree. They get more perfumed and sweet, until after a couple of days they can be almost cloyingly sweet. Kind of the way bananas do after they turn speckled and brown. I've never seen one in the market that wasn't past its prime.

    • @GlenisRetiredNZ
      @GlenisRetiredNZ 4 месяца назад

The season started 6-8 weeks ago, depends on climate. Warmer areas come on 2-3 weeks sooner. The season is 6 - 8 weeks. We got our first few 5 weeks ago, then it builds to a crescendo and tails off.

It usually takes 3 years for feijoa trees to start bearing. Once they do, they bear heavily. BTW, the blossoms are sweet tasting. Parrots love to eat the blossoms (don't worry, you'll have enough to share). Ours yielded about half of a 20 liter bag full a day in season.

They can live for a long time too. My friend had a tree that must have been 40 years old and healthy, until a big storm knocked it over. It would have been 4 metres high and the same across. Peak season it dropped well over 100 big delicious fruit every day.

Hello, and thanks for your message. Feijoa usually requires two trees to fruit. They are mostly pollinated by birds as well. So, with that in mind, I hope that helps you in your quest for feijoa fruit. 😊

Yay :) Thanks Stacey. I lost my ice cream recipe a few years ago and I did try a different one but finding the one that I had is going to be a trial and error exercise until I find it again.

Wink, the "sweetened" condensed milk. I haven't bought any in 15 years so got some cheap GV Walmart brand. Either I've lost my mind (likely) or they've changed the recipe like all companies seem to do. The US Walmart product is lighter in color than it used to be, more pourable, doesn't seem as sweet as we remember and has a grittiness the family doesn't like. So, it seems like NZ's in color and pourability. Okey dokey, no more questioning on what condensed milk is.

I'm going to do a video on how to make your own soon. Hopefully, it helps us all save some money on it.

@@FarmersWifeHomestead That would be great. I've heard to heat and reduce milk and add sugar but never tried it.
Was having a bad day, so thanks for the perking it up with ice cream!

Thank you. I thought that it may have been able to because of the lemon 🍋 .
I'm bottling some with out lemon with the over flow method to see how it keeps. I have a grand daughter who's allergic to lemons

It is hard to define the taste of them. There is nothing really you can compare them to.

Sorry, I didn't count them, and they were all different sizes. You could just process them like I showed and freeze any lift over pulp. 😊
