  • This was the last thing I was expecting taking my Harley Course...but everything happens for a reason right?
This was four days of sweat and tears and the last possible outcome I could've anticipated but I'm glad I can share my experience with everyone and hopefully be the voice for anyone else struggling to get their license.

Well, that's the american way aint it. Sink or swim. Come to canada and take the classes here. The instructors are amazing, actually good people, never yell at anyone and give you proper instructions and time. Also booking a harley class is not a good idea. You need to start learning on a smaller bike, which is lighter.
Summer classes are alright, i just completed my G class in April and it was still freezing in canada at that point. Had to start the class at 7 am and ride all day in freezing weather and then give your test in freezing weather as well. Wasnt an easy day at all

You are not the first person to cry on the course, lots of people get so nervous, my wife cried, dont tell her I told you. You just need to practice on small roads and parking lots with Burch and you will do fine, it is simply practice and repetition and you will eventually get to where you want to be with your skillset. Loving the videos. It takes time for everyone to learn, you just dont see the struggle they go through.

A 500 pound bike is a lot to move around. I remember my first classes and I was surprised how heavy a "real bike" is. Also, I failed my first driving test where it was super hot, and I was sweating balls, so you'll get there. Maybe you should see if you can get a class where they have a somewhat smaller bike? I'm sure you'll do fine when you get your bearings :)

It really is!! I knew how heavy it would be but it’s different actually moving it and especially in the heat. Definitely looking into other class options with smaller bikes, but also definitely practicing, like you said, to get my bearings first! 🤘🏻

You should be very proud of yourself. You wasted nothing, but you learned a lot about yourself and safety. I am 66 y/o lady who rode a Yamaha RD250 back in the 1970's for years. I was only 5' tall then, now only 4'10" and am ready to start riding again. Signed up for the MSF course in 2 weeks and don't have a bike to practice on at all, so yes, I am very nervous, plus I am in Florida and it is already in the high 80's!! Don’t look at it as “blowing your money”. It was a life lesson that cost you $400 but you learned from it. As Aristotle said “ Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” You knew your limits and was wise enough to listen to yourself. I took my class (with not ever having been on a MC) in August when I lived in PA (its free to residents) and I had to quit during the range portion for the same reason. I got sick from the heat and way overheated but I had great instructors. He saw what was happening and got me off the range. Fortunately I could sign up for the range portion only at no additional cost. So that is what I did but in September when it was cooler. Keep practicing and we all believe in you.

You're doing awesome honestly, you've got a lot of awareness for where you are as a person and able to reflect on the situation,
I'd recommend checking out MSF courses instead. I took an MSF course here in Panhandle WV. The leader had all smaller bikes to train with, and my class only had like 4 of us and a 3 day course, 1 class day and 2 course days then a test at end day 3. I've heard some horror stories about the Harley classes, especially vs the value. So don't be too beaten up about it. Good Luck on this continued journey!!

Thank you for documenting your journey! People always post their successes, but hardly anyone posts their struggles. It's hard when you want something so badly, but your mind and body have other ideas. I took the MSF course at 52 years old. The first day was brutal! It was so hot and walking the bike around takes a lot of effort when you're a small person. I was sick for a couple days afterward. I had trouble understanding the instructions which led to me dropping the bike. I wasn't able to shift from 1st to 2nd because my feet were too small. I was very upset. I almost didn't go back for the second class. I'm glad I did. The next class I rode a Grom and it was a huge difference. I could reach all the controls. It was much lighter. It fit me perfectly. I don't think I would have passed if I had to take it on a Harley. I decided I prefer riding scooters. I get to ride without the hassle of shifting. I never wanted to ride a cruiser anyway. I like the bikes from the 70's. The CB350, etc. Don't beat yourself up. As women we tend to do that to ourselves. You'll get there. Practice in a parking lot with your rebel until you're really confident.

Thanks for being so real in this vid. Everything you said is exactly how I felt a year ago when I was learning how to ride. I took the MSF with zero experience. I think I dropped that bike at least four times, absolutely bombed the u-turn portion, and got so frustrated I cried. I barely passed, but I was so grateful for the experience. I have a Rebel 300 like you. The MSF had us on Rebel 250s, so I would definitely recommend that if you'd like to take another riding course. It was super helpful to learn on a bike similar to the one I would be riding. You have such a great attitude about riding, and I have no doubts you'll crush it. Best of luck and have fun!

My husband encouraged me to take a Can Am trike course this past month to get my 3 wheel motorcycle license. I had gone through all the emotions you have talked about in this video. Come time for class. Hubby came with me for both day's of the 2 day course. Nerves were on high as well as the emotions. Come the 2nd day and triple digit heat. Near the end of the class and going through the test of knowledge I was starting to over heat, legs were just barely starting to cramp, and I had about enough emotionally. One of my 3 other class mates noticed and started to encourage me to keep me going till the end of the class. It was so nice to have the reminder that I was truly not alone. I was able to pass the class the first time through. I could not have asked for a better group of people to have spent the weekend with. From the other students, to the instructor, and my hubby. This experience was truly out of my comfort zone by a long stretch. If I can do it with a learning disability, verbal disability, and an auditorial disability. You can get it as well. You are clearly a strong willed person and you can do anything you can put your mind to.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience as I am going through the exact process and feelings right now. I had to withdraw from my HD MSF course yesterday, on day 3. I have learned a lot, but the tasks got advanced so quickly, and as a new rider with zero experience, I just didn't feel safe to continue and would not be able to pass the course. To be able to use all four extremities for different controls is not an easy feat. I don't know anyone who started playing piano in just 2-3 days :) I totally agree that we must not lose hope; nothing is impossible. It is all about practicing basic skills until you feel more comfortable, then moving on to the next level. Everyone has a different learning curve. No one even told me that I would need a crash bar for my brand-new bike :)) So now my plan is to get the crash bars ASAP and start practicing on my own. Thanks so much again for sharing your experience and being an inspiration for the new riders!

I took a lot of private lessons before tackling the Harley basic rider course, which helped a lot, but I can still relate to your experience, only my class was in February, so it was cold! (I think the heat you were in would be worse than the cold.) I dropped the bike three times in the class! I barely passed, but I definitely wasn't ready to go on the roads. I'm about to start the true part of my journey just like you. I recently invested about 6k from a loan towards all my gear, a 2018 rebel 300, and the licensing fees. I convinced myself that all the warnings people have given me and all of the financial issues I might face, didn't matter. I went for it, and I'm extremely happy. The guy I bought from upgraded to an 1100 just like Burch and I think I made a friend. In the future I'll reach out to him to go on a ride. I have all the gear needed to keep me safe (and two helmets because my head got fatter on the ride home and the 1st one stopped fitting), a bike, and determination to learn. I'm hoping to take my classes here really soon once I have the money and until then, ONLY WHEN I FEEL LIKE IT, I take my bike up and down the neighborhood and practice for half an hour. We all start somewhere, and I think it's super important that the lower experience end of motorcycling gets the coverage you're giving the internet. I really hope that once you do get your license, we'll see you and Burch go on some cool adventures and finally enjoy your bikes together!

Turned out to be the better choice for me. I took the course in mid July with a heat index of 96 degrees so I feel your pain. The difference with my course was they used smaller bikes the old rebel 250. It gave me a better since of control which I think is essential for new riders. You definitely need to be proud of yourself for the simple fact that you were honest both with yourself and with us! Nina, it wasn't a waste, it was an investment, you learnt the right way, failure is the best teacher - embrace it, be proud, it takes courage to try and even greater courage to share one's set back. For me, it was the day before my final exam, I was practicing a U turn just like any other time i was out on the parking lot, but it was rainy and i underestimated how little i can lean while the road is wet, so i went in there, leaned, and immediately felt uncomfortable, the tires were slipping, so out of fear I got back up, but i was only mid turn, and i knew i couldn't break while It's wet and I'm at an angle, so I just let it go out of the parking lot into a grass field, where the front wheel slipped and the bike fell over. The next day i was super scared to even hop on the bike beacuse it was raining again and I was supposed to do the range and then hop on the road, EU regulations and stuff. Really a demotivating experience, but I ended up acing it without a problem. So the motto goes, don't let your fear stop you, but don't stop it from keeping you safe.

I took the 2-day BRC MSF course in July. The first day I dropped the bike within the first 10 mins on the range. At the end of Day 1, I thought I made a big mistake in buying my bike before going through the class. I ended up passing but the first few weeks, I rarely rode because I was scared. I started off with riding around my neighborhood. Then I took it to empty parking lots to hone my skills with the clutch and starting on a hill. I prefer riding around the backroads of Calvert and AA Co to highway riding as less cars to deal with. Ride your own ride and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You’ll get there whenever is right for you.

Same. I bought my VStar 250 before the course. During the MSF, I dropped my bike, kept going into neutral instead of first, couldn't get it into neutral when I needed it to be, I was told I was too slow on the exercises, couldn't make the figure 8 turn, and I failed the MSF. I immediately signed up for the last possible class that same season and practiced on my VStar in my driveway and on a bicycle for counter steering (MSF instructor suggested it). I passed the MSF the 2nd time and realized, nobody knew that was my 2nd time. I also saw how easy everyone had passed when I failed but I assumed they were all new to riding. I still struggle because I can only ride around my small neighborhood and in a small nearby church parking lot, so progress has been very slow, but I'm not giving up.

Then he informed me right before the next exercise that they had a three-strikes rule and if I dropped it again I’d be out. No helpful suggestions, no additional instruction, just a warning. Not really the most helpful thing to say to someone whose confidence has already been shredded, and I didn’t feel safe or supported in continuing.

So glad I didn't go through the Harley Davidson course. It was the first option I checked out. My next option was the local vo-tech school and my last option was a small school about 50 miles away. I talked to some friends and they all told me of their horror stories at the Harley Davidson school. Based on my short inquiry at the school and based on what my friends told me, I decided not to go to that school. 2 of the people I spoke with told me of the Harley instructor yelling at them and being a real jerk. That's the same impression I got when I met him. I went with the small school because of the convenient schedule and the type of bikes. I wasn't interested in buying a gigantic Harley so why test on one. I passed the course. The instructor was patient with all the students and very pleasant. No I am not ready for motor cross competition but I do know the basics and can safely operate a motorcycle on the highway. That's all I wanted.

In my country you have to pas a Certificate of Basic Training before you can ride on the road and you can only ride a 125cc (you have to pass a full license to ride bigger bikes. My first attempt it was hot and in full gear, I became unwell and had to give up by lunchtime. It took me a day to cool down and I lost £175 but I learned I really wanted to do it. I had to wait 4 months for it to cool down. I tried again and the first day the bike was too heavy 143kg and i really struggled. At the end of that day, I was ready to give up my dream, I was aching all over and I was devastated. I went back the next day just to watch but the instructor said he'd been thinking about how I learned and once everyone else had gone off on the road test, he brought out a light scooter and taught me one to one. I loved it but didn't have time to complete the course. Now it is too hot again but in October I will go back and finish the course. It's taking me a long time but I'll get there. I know how to ride and I have now ridden 3 bikes and 2 scooters.
Everyone is different and learns in different ways and times. Don't give up and go one to one if you are having difficulties, it's worth it.😊

Ride the your Rebel 300 or any other bike until it becomes habit and your not thinking about it any more. Don't worry about the weight of the bike, It's all about the bikes balance point. Keep your chin up and pride yourself on the wins. Don't look at the fails as a fail but as a learning experience. You got this 🤩😇Your a natural behind the camera. Love the videos😁

This video is so relatable and I love your honesty. It’s freakin hard, haha. The course I took was a Friday, Saturday, & Sunday course. The first day I was so excited, and by the time I got home Saturday evening I was EXHAUSTED. I cried too, haha. It’s so much information in such a small amount of time. We even had to take our riding test in the rain…or not and completely do the full course over. It was nerve wracking. My biggest issue was also the box turns (figure 8s) & I kept killing the bike. I was told if I killed it more than 3 times during the test I fail. 🥴 I’m not sure if they have them in your area, but this course was only $20 and I was on a 250 Rebel. I passed the class in Sept, bought my bike in Oct, and didn’t get a real good long ride in until like June (Midwest). I’m slowly getting comfortable on my bike. I instantly knew I had to subscribe to your page! I already subscribe to Burch too. I appreciate your videos!

I just took the Motorcycle Safety Course where I am in California in the middle of last month… Mine was a x2 Friday setup (I took vacation time from work to do this)w/ Zoom class in the morning and riding range in the afternoon. I am 38, with zero motorcycle experience, and a Type II Diabetic. Because of the medication I take, I kept my food down to a minimum as to not need to use the restroom while at the range, but drank plenty of Gatorade because Day 1 at the range was going to be in the 90’s.
Just like when I first learned how to drive many years ago (in a car w/ manual transmission), I had some trouble getting going in first gear on Day 1, which was very frustrating… I eventually got a feel for the specific bike I was on (it was a 250cc standard type), but at the end if the day I realized I over-hydrated and my blood sugar was low causing me to lose focus, feel a little faint, and lose strength in my left hand causing me to let go and stall a lot. Thankfully, that happened at the very end of the day’s lesson.
Day 2 a week later, I was able to find the exact bike I used previously, so my muscle memory helped out a great deal when we started to warm up. Last week we did the cone weaving in 2nd gear, but this time we had to do it slower in 1st which I had the hardest time with. We took our written test and continued to learn new skills until it was time for the practical. Out of 10 guys, I was 8th in line to proceed with each of the 5 different exercises we would be graded on. For whatever reason, watching everyone in front of me go and mess up one thing or another up made me super nervous… I psyched myself out and messed up on several of the exercises, even those ones I was most confident with doing. The final exercise was to simulate a 4-stop and how to make slow/left turns from a dead stop (something we did not practice, we were just told to do it).
Needless to say, when it was my time to speak with one of the instructors one on one to see how I did, I was told I did not pass… I had planned out my future budget to get a Honda Rebel, watched many a video on learning to ride, listened to people tell me how easy the course is, and all the time/money/effort spent felt like it was a waste and I was a complete failure. I wanted to break down; I wanted cry, scream, spike my helmet into the ground, but I just bit my lip and went to my car to reflect.
I needed to give myself more credit… I had no experience prior to the course, and despite my age and health, I went through it with an open mind to learn because I always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle, and to have one to commute with would save a lot of money. I managed to get through the course and not drop the bike (granted I had some close calls). I might not have gotten my endorsement, but I didn’t walk away empty handed either. A lot of things in life haven’t panned out the way I had hoped, but I don’t want this to be the end of my motorcycle journey. I have a 60-day window to attend an additional training day (focused on the testing criteria) and retest. If a spot opens up in November, I intended to “get back on that horse” so to speak and try again.
You have a great support system with Birch and your own ride to practice on before you choose another route to your endorsement, so without a doubt, I know you can pull it off.
Side Note: I wanted a Rebel1100 (operating on Rain Mode for starters), but the course has humbled me to want get a Rebel500 first. (we’ll see when the time comes).

That Harley class is the equivalent of learning to drive a car in a monster truck. Its not throwing you into the deep end of a pool, it's throwing you into an ocean! I highly recommend taking the MSF course where they have Groms and old Rebel 300's. I just took the class 2 months ago and I would not have passed if I was put on a 500 pound beast like that! It was you and Birch who inspired me to take the course with your encouraging words so I feel it's my turn to return the favor. This is just a small bump in the road. A bump that you'll soon be riding over with no problem on your Rebel!

I'm fortunate that the classes in PA are free for PA residents, as I wound up taking it THREE TIMES. First time I had to drop out because I got sick at the end of the first day. Second time I passed (somehow), but was extremely uncomfortable with the slow speed maneuvers which made me screw up the tests and had me fuming. Third time was right before I got my own bike, and I'd been hoping to try a heavier bike closer to my Sportster (sadly wasn't available at the RevZilla class), and to get more comfortable with slow speed turns. I *STILL* ended up dropping my bike multiple times after all of that, and am grateful that it has engine guards.
While PA classes aren't free for non-PA residents, they are comparatively inexpensive (I think $300 for the beginner class), and have much smaller bikes than the Street 500. At 5' 9", I was more comfortable on the Kawasaki Eliminator 125 than on the Suzuki GZ250, the latter of which I just found too small for me. But they're MUCH lighter. I don't know whether the course completion card from a PA class can be used as proof for a MD license, but it's something to look into.
But you've got access to THREE bikes that make for good practice in your Rebel 300, the Grom, and the Navi. Definitely try to get some parking lot practice with each as you feel more comfortable. Having Burch there to help already put you way ahead of my lonesome ass! You've GOT THIS. It sucks that you're out the cash, but you seem into it enough that you'll get it, no problem.
FWIW, the drummer of Rush, Neil Peart, legendary perfectionist, had to take his own motorcycle test multiple times! He wrote about it in his book Ghost Rider. Eventually he wound up loving riding so much that he would ride between concert venues while the other band members took the tour bus or flew. After his wife and daughter passed within a year, he rode all through North America, from Canada to Mexico, as a form of healing from the trauma. His healing through riding was part of why I picked up riding myself. So if one of the most legendary rock drummers of all time had to take a riding course more than once, do NOT feel bad about having to do so as well. Your reasons for stepping back were very wise.
    YOU'VE GOT THIS!

I told the instructor I’m out. He gave a whole speech about “part of being a good rider was knowing when not to ride..” which made me a feel better about stopping.
