One of my favourite tips to stop ruminating thoughts like regret anxiety and time-management anxiety, is to instead use your symptoms as a way to feel excited rather than fearful. I've only figured this out recently after being a long-term sufferer of anxiety and panic disorders, but by telling yourself "I'm not jealous or scared I'm just excited to try those things too". I know that's not psychologically true, but It really works trust me, here are some other good ones too. I hope they help. ^_^
    1. Use your anxiety as an in-built detection system, whenever you feel anxious either talk to someone about it if it persists, or write it down as a "trigger" and eventually attack that fear(if you need to) and it will go away.
    2. Realise that if you suffer from a mental illness only so much can be done to subside the symptoms, just acknowledging and accepting this, for me, has been so helpful. Don't beat yourself up constantly, you're doing a great job.
    3. Don't try to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, or feel regret or guilt for doing things you enjoy, I know that's one of my biggest worries. But I realise now that I be excessively selfless so I can distract myself from my own problems and ambitions, which isn't healthy.
    4. Don't be afraid to ask for help, speak a bit louder if you can, I know it's tough but give it a shot every once in awhile.
    5. Use your initiative, be honest and make your own decisions. Anxiety, I've found can be crippling for confidence and self-assurance, but if you start doing more simple things on your own without relying on others, it can do wonders.
    6. DON'T OVERTHINK! This one's a killer for me, but by just simplifying things, and calming down your breathing, things will start to feel like less of a worry and more like an opportunity.
    7. Only be concerned with what YOU can control, that doesn't translate to "defeatist" it just means that you have to be more accepting of a situation or circumstance, you are not a miracle worker so stop trying to be.
I really hope these help someone, I know how difficult it is living with anxiety, many thanks for listening and have a great day! :D

What if you stutter and your anxiety is induced by it?

    • @JordyAllen
      @JordyAllen 8 лет назад +2

+Tuhin Bagh Have you considered speech therapy? One of my friends had a really bad stutter, but after years of work he now manages it extremely well, you can hardly tell! :) But if you stutter because of anxiety, that's often due to a lack of confidence, passive natures ensue because of it. I suffer from it to a degree, but I will instead typically speak very softly or quietly, stumbling over my words. I realise now the problem is because I'm not assertive enough as person, and feel like I'm bothering people when I'm in conversation with them. It's important to recognise what the cause is and fix it that way. I'm not a doctor or therapist, so please don't take my advice as professional, but I hope that helps Tuhin. Have a great day ^_^

    • @TuhinBagh
      @TuhinBagh 8 лет назад +2

JawedOnDood Yeah I did, all the doc was doing was trying to change the way I speak. I sounded like a dubstep robot :D
I always thought I would grow out of it, but there is no cure for it -__-
And my anxiety got induced due to stuttering, like I have a fear of being judged.
Some people hardly even understand my words and laugh behind my back.
So I have only handful of *mean* friends.
And constant in pressure where normal people takes speech for granted, they don't realise how hard it is.
*sigh* feels so great to share feeling with someone :)

I understand anxiety a lot. And this new age of social media and the millennial's anxiety may reach to a whole new level. Have you ever tried canceling or temporarily cancel your accounts on social media. It really helps. What matters is you and not anyone else or what they think. I also try to think that in third world countries that anxiety or other mental disorders do not exist or they do not know that they exist because they are trying to survive day to day. I hope it helps. Good luck

ASMR videos have SERIOUSLY helped me whether I'm just feeling a bit uneasy or if I'm in the middle of an awful anxiety attack. Especially ASMR videos that focus on personal attention for anxiety attacks. These videos are often made by ASMRtists who experience panic attacks themselves so the are very good at techniques to calm the viewer down. :)

My anxiety has been so terrible lately due to school starting, it's to the point where I get really nauseous and I throw up. Does anyone have any tips to calm myself down before I get to the point of feeling like I'm going to throw up?

    • @chelsies5615
      @chelsies5615 8 лет назад +35

I had this same problem last year. At the time, I never figured out a way to help myself calm down but looking back, I have a few ideas. To help me with my anxiety, I constantly tell myself that it's all in my head. Yes, I obviously know that it's an actual disorder but telling myself that it's all in my head really helps me because I feel like I'm stronger than my anxiety and I can control it. Another thing that helps me when going to school with anxiety is being as prepared as possible. I always have a little kit full of things I would need in any situation that would trigger a panic attack or while I'm having a panic attack. Such as tampons, hand sanitizer, and pills if I'm feeling really nauseous. So being as prepared as possible before school starts has really helped me because I feel ready for anything. Another thing that's great to have is a stress reliever. Like one of those stress balls that you squeeze when you're freaking out. It just helps get your mind off things.

I'm using my brothers tablet rn ,well my name Samantha and I hate waking in the halls bc of my anxiety I'm a fun and loud person in class but when the bell is about to ring my heart starts beating fast and I just don't like waking in the halls (im in 8th grade in middle school) what I do is just stop close my eyes and breath in for 4 seconds and hold in for like 3 seconds and breath out I do that till I start breathing properly. And u should tell ur teacher about ur anxiety and let u out 1 min early I only told one teacher and I want to tell the others but I feel they will say no . And I'm scared bc next year I'm a go to high school and the high school my sister goes is so huge and there r a lot of people more than 2500+ students and I'm scared

Yeah, I feel in the same way, when I feel like that, I go out and relax myself watching plants, trees, whatever that makes me forget my problems por few minutes.
I also talk about my feelings, and feel the support of friends or family really helps, they always cheer me up.
Sorry if there are some gramatical problems on this, I'm not a native speaker.

I have suffered with generalised and social anxiety for pretty much my entire life (I'm 21) so it's something that's always been a part of me, but it's only been in the last year or so that I've learned to accept it as part of my life. I was always told I wasn't normal and that I should be like other children my age, so that made me feel very inadequate and alone but now that I've learned to control it (for the most part) and accept it as part of my personality, it's much easier to deal with. I'd say my top coping mechanisms for dealing with anxiety and/or the depression it can often cause are as follows:
    1) don't make yourself the centre of the situation. Identify other aspects of the environment you're in that you can focus on which will help distract your attention away from the panic you're feeling.
    2) don't be afraid of anxiety. Anxiety is a natural thing and is there to keep us safe during times of danger. Understanding that allows you to identify the role anxiety plays in your life and where it may be having too much of an influence. When you identify this, you can then work on reducing any extra "unnecessary" anxiety.
    3) recognise your achievements. A lot of the time I would feel unable to cope with the anxiety attacks and how that affected my life, but then I taught myself to look back at everything I had achieved in the past and this really helped as it made me realise how strong I was, and how even the smallest actions of asking a stranger for directions, picking up the phone or getting up to do that school presentation were all things that filled me with terror, but at the same time were things I had conquered. It may seem like a small accomplishment to some, but to someone with anxiety it is a huge achievement.
These are just things that have helped me but if they help just one other person who may read this, then I figured it's worth sharing :) xx

I have tips as a person who's suffered from GAD for 20+ years I've been to several therapists and taken my meds, but here are ways I handle anxiety attacks.
    1) find something completely banal to distract yourself. I usually do this with bad TV like watching 80's sitcoms, it's inoffensive, distracting and completely simple and it works!
    2) I had a therapist tell me that a lot of times when you suffer an anxiety attack you tend to breathe irregularly or hold your breath without noticing it. This sends a trigger to your brain to release adrenaline and thus makes your anxiety go up to 11 on a scale from 1-10. So breathe from your stomach and concentrate on it.
    3) the 15 min rule. If you're worrying or something starts to trigger your anxiety, tell yourself you will worry about it in 15 minutes. When 15 minutes are up, give yourself another 15 mins (you do this while distracting yourself) and keep doing it. 15 mins later I will think about my bills. Etc.
    4) shoulders and teeth. When you get stressed or anxious a lot of people bring their shoulders up closer to their ears. Kind of like an animal protecting its neck from attack. Bring your shoulders down. Also if you're like me and clench your teeth put a pencil or something akin to a pen or pencil horizontally in your mouth between your teeth so they are not clenched. Both of these work pretty well.
    5) take your meds!!! I actually get anxious when my prescription starts to dwindle so not taking my meds scares me, but a lot of people resist taking medication. There will always be someone who will tell you that you don't need meds and you can do something like exercise, pray, meditate, or just have better inner strength. Unless that person is a medical doctor they can't refute what a medical doctor tells you. Also, one medication does not work with every person and finding one that is good for your brain chemistry can be very disheartening especially since it takes a while for meds to kick in enough to see if they work. So, if you've been put on a medication and it doesn't work for you after 2-4 weeks, please don't give up. I remember having crazy reactions to different medications when starting out. One gave me road rage! One made me feel even more anxious and one had me borderline hallucinating. Stick with it. You may have to take meds for the rest if your life but if you had a disease like a heart problem you would follow your doctors advice and work with them until you were well. Also, if you are like me and have been on medication a long time, your brain will sometimes figure out how to go around your regular medication and slowly stop working. If this happens and you start feeling bad again tell your doctor immediately. Changing medication after being in the one that finally took care of you is scary but sometimes you just have to give in, listen to your doctor and put your trust in their hands. What meds you take is no ones business but yours. You don't need anyone's approval to justify your emotions or illness. If you had that heart condition and your best friend said you could just be stronger and think your way to healing your diseased heart you'd pretty much think they were the crazy person. It's no ones business but you and your doctors.
I could continue but that's enough. I hope something I've said will help someone. ❤️

There’s nothing to be scared of. They’re just feelings, and feelings never killed anyone. I’ve had 2am massive panic attacks, but because I knew what it was, I just accepted it and said do your worst! Acceptance is the only way to break the cycle. It’s just a fear of fear, and nobody has ever died of fear. Accept those feelings and thoughts, don’t label them, and go about your day. They can’t hurt you, you’re just fueling the fire by being scared of them. Accept them as only harmless feelings, don’t label them, and soon the cycle is broken.

One way I found to control my anxiety is to ask yourself, how many times have I felt this same feeling before? Just remind yourself you've had anxiety before. You have had it multiple times; nothing is different from last time. I found my chest always hurts, or my heart was beating really fast. Find key points during you anxiety and remind yourself you have felt that same thing before. Everything turned out fine from the last panic attack, what makes this one any different?
Hope this helps. From one anxious mind to another! :)

Be sure not to lean on distraction therapy or coping techniques. It’s only delaying the inevitable and can make symptoms worse. You must accept the anxiety feelings as just a harmless feeling. Fear has never hurt anyone. Accept them as harmless, don’t label them, and go about your day. Actually tell them do SO YOUR WORST, and just ride it out, knowing they truly can’t hurt you. Soon, they begin to fade away as weeks go by, as your brain has been trained not to respond to them with fear and adrenaline.

I then went to a _reputable_ acupuncturist and weened myself off of all medications during a 2-month treatment program. I now only go four times a year for acupuncture treatments and no longer suffer from anxiety.

It seems like more and more people who are in positions of influence are coming forward to talk about mental disorders and I am loving it. The worst thing you can do to an already anxious and/or depressed person is make them feel guilty or abnormal for a condition they neither asked for nor have any control over. So many people are suffering yet we are just now becoming more vocal about it. The more that we collectively discuss these issues, the more opportunity we have to heal. Talking to others and feeling a sense of kinship has helped me tremendously with my panic disorder, however hearing words like these from someone on an influential platform is a very emotional experience for me. It takes a very brave and strong person to talk openly to potentially hundreds of thousands of people about an issue that is so truly sensitive and, at its core, tremendously personal. Your bravery helps thousands.
Also, to share what helps me personally with my anxiety: nostalgia. It may sound strange, but if I can trigger myself to experience nostalgia for a time I associate with carefree happiness, it's almost as if I can trick my brain into feeling that way again for a short period. For me and many others, the happiest time of my life was when I was young. Watching my favorite movies/TV shows from that time period (Cinderella, Boy Meets World, Fresh Prince, etc.) always fills me with a sense of comfort. Find what is comforting to you and utilize it but do not depend on it. Strangely, I also find comfort in watching ID channel shows as they evoke memories of watching Forensic Files with my big brother growing up. Every person is different and this approach is not always effective, however it is worth a try.
Thank you, Mitch and Greg. As always, love you guys!

Writing in a notebook or journal helps me so much to manage my anxiety. For me, my anxiety makes me shut down and be very fatigued so a journal helps me keep track of what I need to get done. I can keep track of small things that make a huge difference in my overall health. I like to make lists and check things off throughout the day. Eat a healthy meal, drink a lot of water, study, check e-mails, shower, call a friend, etc. I also write my feelings down, a huge weight is lifted off of me when I just get my thoughts out of my head without fear of judgement from others. Get a cute notebook or decorate one yourself because art can also be very therapeutic. I hope this helped and stay well everyone! xx

There are many people who literally can't help it if they don't pay attention- Be it a disorder, or just really bad at doing so in general.
Like for me, if I'm not interested in the topic I tend to end up daydreaming without even realizing- Until I snap out of it and notice have no clue as to what's going on. If I could pay attention, lord know's I would because fuck would my classes be so much easier then.

If a class is boring you will probably start to daydream more. I recommend you try to appreciate something a bit more that you think is boring and then it won't become as boring anymore. Also get rid of any problems that can be solved in your life such as stress. Also I find that if if I have not done my homework for that day I will zone out more and start doubting myself which is bad in general. I have adhd so I'm not making stuff up.

I feel you. I'm thirteen and struggling with a huge transition, being a country away from home. It doesn't help that I'm an introvert who's in a near constant state of depression. A couple tips: focus on something you care about. When you're engaged with something you find fun in, you won't feel anxious. Also, try keeping your phone with you. If you have access to text or call, somebody who can help make you feel better is just a couple clicks away. And lastly, don't forget that there are others out there who have close to or the same issues. You're never truly alone.

My anxiety makes me feel like people around me think I’m very dumb or ugly when in reality I’m actually very smart and the people that I think about judging me would never judge me and are very good friends to me. Figits help me a lot I recommend pop it’s you can find them in all different colors shapes and patterns. If you don’t wanna buy anything you can unfold a paper clip and curve both ends after putting beads on it you can push the beads around with your fingers. It also helps me to day dream of the person who I imagine judging me not judging me and loving me for who I am. It helps to tell yourself that they love you and would never judge you make it clear and tell yourself firmly don’t let yourself tell yourself that it’s not true.

what i mostly do, and linked to mindfulness is to just think. "Is me feeling so anxious or bad right now bringing anything positive or helping with my problem/issue" when u come to the realisation that feeling the way you do is not usefull and potentialy negative. and feeling good is either neutral or potentialy positive. it feels like the load is coming off. The hardest is to get this realisation deep the first time. once you have do it once it becomes easier. Like ridding a bicycle.

Not sure if will work for everyone but its worth a shot.

My first therapist marked me down with chronic social anxiety, which, that is true, but, i am seeing a new therapist who agrees my anxiety spreads out into different areas, also, i do show signs of depression, and, i found a few ways to help with it haha
Firstly i am on Fluoxetine, then the therapy, the therapist is now getting me to write whenever i feel anxious, my thoughts, physical and mental behaviour, and all that stuff, but the biggest ones to help are, i take a walk through the woods (Very close by me) every day, sometimes i even go to a woods an hour away and spend 5-6 hours in there as it's so large, i hug my pets, listen to music (Relaxing or happy stuff), i do photography, which that helps a lot, drawing, and yeah, if you can, just see a friend
But never, ever push yourself in at the deep end, and, if you do need to, you can leave, for instance yesterday i needed to go to a shop, which, that is awful enough for me, but i also had to do it alone, even worse haha, and, i tried, but, in the end i just had to leave, there's nothing wrong with that, always put your happiness and comfortability first :)

I feel like people who have never had an anxiety or panic attack don’t understand that saying “calm down” doesn’t calm you down. It only stresses people out because they’re trying to calm down and they can’t. Whenever you try to fight off an attack, usually it backfires and ends up making your attack even worse. Something that has helped me is talking to someone, new breathing methods are always something to give a try, maybe even try the square breathing method.

i was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder in fourth grade and within the past few months i've also been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, mild to moderate separation anxiety (but not with my parents oddly), and cognitive-centered OCD. i find positive distractions such as music, reading, thought-stopping, and mindfulness/meditation to be the most helpful for me, along with calming breathing exercises to a certain extent.

As someone who suffers with anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder, i can wholly recommend crochet.
Sounds weird maybe but this is why:
1 - its very rhythmic, the flow of creating stitches and patterns becomes meditative the better you get at it
2 - when you are still learning, the concentration takes your mind off stuff, when you are good at it, a complex pattern does so
3 - you are achieving something - there is a lot to be said for having achieved something, you can see and hold and use
4 - you can make things for other people, giving something you have made and that person using it, wearing it etc is a really good feeling
If crochet isnt your thing, latch hook rug making is also good for the same reasons. Even just using a french knitting dolly to make cords is a good start. Anything that is rhythmic and builds up to an item is great. Knitting not so much as you can slip stitches on that and it can be frustrating.
And yes, men can crochet.. yarn crafts are not solely a womens art.

Really good tips. I have GAD. Sometimes, I don't even know what triggers my anxiety. It usually centers around the unknown, but it's not consistent.
I find controlled breathing, and laying down helps me in the midst of an attack. I live in a third floor apartment, so I usually go climb the stairs to get moving, the fresh air helps too!

It’s just a feeling. Your fear of it is called anxiety. Those feelings are harmless. By fearing them, you are fueling the fire. Accept them as harmless feelings, don’t label them, and the cycle is broken. It’s just fear of fear, and that’s never hurt anyone. It’s your reaction to them that is fueling their existence. Don’t rest on coping techniques to calm you down. It only comes back stronger. Your brain thinks you’re trying to calm a dangerous situation where there is no actual danger. Accept the feelings as just harmless feelings, don’t label them, go on with your day, and the cycle is broken. Have you ever come running over to a child who has just fallen down and been like OMG! Are you ok??!! Are you hurt??? And THEN the child starts crying. If you had been completely passive about it, the child would’ve just gotten up and climbed the monkey bars again. It’s our REACTION to the feelings that breaks the cycle.

One tip that has really helped me out is learning to become the person that you would want to go to for encouragement. I think of myself as a person that I hang out with, just like a friend or a family member, and for my overall well being it is important for me to stay in contact with people that make me feel good about myself. So I try and actively be that person that gives me encouragement. If I'm in a stressful social setting, I'll usually talk myself through it, and tell myself it really isn't that bad, and once I really start to think about the situation, I truly do realize that it really isn't that bad. I've noticed that by thinking this way, that I slowly got out of the habit of thinking pessimistically, which has helped out so much in social situations . Now I'm not solely focused on how I'm feeling, but I'm now much more focused on how others are feeling too, and that really broadens the perspective of you in relation to everybody else.

Maybe not the most, but it still makes you interesting. I have several friends with disabilities, both mental and physical, and I am in a constant state of depression, but I find it most interesting to hear the viewpoints, and especially just talk to, people who understand how it feels to be in true emotional pain. From my viewpoint, any unique feature, any mental or physical difference, whether it's a disability or anything else, makes the person amazing.

+It's never lupus THIS. It's such an unpopular opinion, but I wholeheartedly share it with you. We're in a world where people with asperger's and autism are embraced as peers and equals, excuses are made for their behaviour, people that call out bad behaviour are practically spat on in the street, and employers are forced to hire along to meet their hiring equality targets. Instead of embracing mental illnesses, we should be curing them and stamping them out.
I suffer from a mild case of depression and anxiety, and have a great company who works with me to work around it, and a great group of friends who embrace me for who I am, but I work out ways to get around it, not force everyone else to work around me. I don't use my depression as a talking point or something to distinguish myself. People who do don't truly have it.

+ZeroSumJ1 All she is saying is that some people view exercise as something negative, and when they focus on "I need to do a lot of exercise or I am failing" it can contribute to the problem rather than eradicate it. I feel similarly, and find that if I avoid the word exercise and instead think of taking a leisurely hike or walk my dogs, that I get exercise, but I don't associate it in the same way I would by calling it exercise.

    • @ZeroSumJ1
      @ZeroSumJ1 8 лет назад

Samantha Enders I get it. But from experience, if you suffer from anxiety issues and push yourself to exercise (specifically, exercise) and work out with the intention of surpassing your limit, you will experience benefits that far outweigh the i-don't-wanna-feelings.

+ZeroSumJ1 Do you have any scientific data to corroborate that? A personal anecdote holds no weight .. her video is all based on science and I could link you some studies that show that simply walking for 15-30 minutes it just as beneficial for mental health as rigorous exercise.

I was always told to face what makes me anxious and my parents constantly tell me "don't you want to get better?" When I don't want to go to a public setting (I have social anxiety). I do want to get better but they make me do the social things that make me the most anxious and self conscious, I know I need to face it little by little but going full in and panicking the whole time is just making it worse.

JojoLOVE well... if someone has a cold, it's not normal so you say they're ill. If it's something that happens 24/7 like anxiety it's hardly what your average person goes through every day. That's why they're disorders. sadly they don't just go away like most normal feelings. I agree with you in the sense that stigma really sucks, and people should begin focusing on being mentally healthy as much as being physically healthy

The best piece of advice I've ever seen on the topic of overcoming anxiety was this: Every time you find yourself feeling anxious and overthinking things, ask yourself if the worry is coming from a place of fear or a place of love. If you can identify that your worries are being driven by fear and insecurity, then you can see how little power they have and choose to love instead. Loving yourself is also SO important when it comes to overcoming anxiety. In my opinion, it's all about shifting your perspective of the world from fear to love.

I'm doing a science fair project and I can't stop thinking of all the bad things that will happen because this is my second time and my first time went really horribly and I don't ever want to face those judges again. My friend, whose project was next to mines, was surrounded by judges while only one or two judges came to look at mines. I felt like a failure and it really hurt me. This year, I was given all summer and one school month to think of a science fair idea. I think about it everyday, but I've gotten nothing so far. I guess I'm not a very sciency person. I really want to love science and appreciate it, but I'm not very intelligent so most things, I don't understand. I went on websites but barely found anything that interested me. Finally, I've ran out of time and the best one I can find is pretty simple, but to me it seems difficult and stressful. I have to test a minimum of 50 people. 50 people! I can't do that because I'm too shy, have social anxiety, I don't have many friends. Wish me luck :/ And I'm so glad I found this video to give me some relief.

If you're feeling stressed about work or assignments piling up then sit down, breathe, and write a list of what you need to do. Then cross off anything that isn't *completely* necessary, and finally, just do one or two things on the list to start off before you take a breather, don't worry about due dates, just focus on the task at hand. I get really stressed out in school and I find this helps.

I found this video about 6 months ago when I was alone in the middle of The night having a panic attack. This helped me just slow down and see my situation at the time was not in my control and to just get a grip.
Since then I've always kept The halt mindset since I would get more anxious and even have panic attack when I was hungry, angry, tired and alone, just reminding myself to slow down and think. Keep a happy mindset has helped.
I still have anexiety since and going to a therapist who has helped me by doing Cognitive Behaviour therapy (think that's the name but if not CBT is The short name for it) but doing that and keeping small but really useful mindsets and tips has helped me Come so far. If you are someone reading this for whatever reason, it will and can get better.

People with mental health problems experience an extra dimension of pain, that other people don't.So practicably if someone can handle for example depression it means that he is capable of dealing with any kind of emotional crises. That is how strong that someone will be.And that's why they deserve all the support and respect not mockery and sarcasm.

I have moments of severe anxiety regularly and at these times I usually just go home and shut myself there until it stops. But I also have this uncontrollable feeling like my whole life is falling apart and nothing is ever going well. I am constantly terrified I will lose my job and friends and my grades in uni will drop. I have BPD together with GAD. I know it's pointless to worry but I can't help it. I actually lose my job regularly after 2 months and people stop interacting with me because I am always sick and extremely unstable. Therapy and medication has just a small effect. Even my psychiatrist rather recommended being on benefits than working because I always have massive mental breakdown every time I get fired or lose a friend. These tips really doesn't work for me when everything seems to go to hell. But I guess it's good to practice in one of my happy days.

Also i stopped setting myself deadlines with set dates, and instead i organise my work in small chunks that and reward myself equally for every little thing ive done!
Also, i try and set aside relaxing and meeting friends time. And i only meet friends that are positive people and wont be generating any negative energy around me.
Not at a perfect stage yet, but it slowly feels better.
