- In this video we break down the brand new Drake Cutter, to see how it stands as a starter ship for new players or a runabout for more experienced ones.
If you're interested in trying out star citizen, make sure to use a referral code or link. This one is mine:

The code is: STAR-4VC5-R9ZC
This way, you'll get 5,000 aUEC to start out with, which will be useful to claim your ship a little faster, or buy some armor and pew pews!

I bought the Mustang Alpha starter pack 43 years ago, but if I still had a PC to play SC on, I'd choose this ship now.
100% if I was a new player I'd be getting that current 45 dollar pack. Man what a great deal!
I remember my great-grand-father telling me about this game... I'm SO excited for when it comes out... maybe I'll get to tell my own great-grand-children about it :)
@@MarkMT The gr8 grand kids might even let you have a berth aboard their 876 million dollar space yacht!
I just love the way it sounds, flies and feels to be inside. It's such a good little ship
It definitely has a lot of polish and demonstrates the improvements to the ship Pipeline at CIG :)
The Cutter is a cute little ship. if i were starting today i would choose it if only for its ability to carry the STV and do bunkers.
100% its a great starter ship, and the current deal is amazing if you need a starter package
Two things I'd like to add:
You missed the ground crew refueling port during your external walk around, it's located on the rear left side between landing gear and thruster. The Corsair has one too below the cargo ramp btw.
Next is that you seem to have misinterpreted the large space in the "armor locker" to be just that, for armor.
The Cutter does not actually have an armor locker.
That thing in the cockpit is entirely a gunrack with space for: 2x Sidearms (top), one long gun (middle), one heavy weapon (like Railgun, that's the large compartment) and one Multitool or Medigun (below the rifle holder)
Thanks for the catch!
Very nice review. Broke down the stats nice and easy. It's my little space camper.
So I take it you picked one up? I hope you enjoy it! Thank you so much for the kind words :)
I'd say the Cutter has become the obvious first upgrade, pushing the Titan off to the second spot, if not outright to the B-list. The Cutter is affordable, immensely versatile, and with very comfortable living quarters, and has a healthy amount of fuel. Unless you want that better combat performance, there's really just not much going for the old Space Penguin in comparison, meaning that it just became a lot more of a niche ship. And I'm not saying that as a criticism. I love that there are more options available in the "small" ship category and there's something for almost everyone, new or older backers.
Personally, I sort of want one, but I also already have a Nomad, which really is just the Cutter's bigger cousin that can do everything it can do, and more...
Agreed, honestly at it's current insane sale price I think its the best starter package by far!
The titan can really put some heat tho with S4 and dual S3 guns
all the good things you state in this ship...CIG WILL NERF!
why?!
Cuz it's a ship that really WASN'T meant to be a Starter ship (the way you have to SEARCH for that option in the pledge store should be a dead giveaway!) and they know it.
I try to tell people all the time JUST BE CAREFUL.
@@PhillipLemmon The Pisces is not meant to be a Starter ship, but it's considered one due to its low price point and designed capabilities. Just because a ship isn't designed to fill a certain category (though in this case I have to disagree with that assessment), it doesn't mean it can't be considered part of it. And as for the Nerfing, the only thing of the ones I mentioned that they could really do anything about is the quantity of fuel, which is a possibility. Though even if it does get nerfed, I doubt it's going to be by a huge amount, as this thing is clearly meant to be able to operate in Pyro as well.
And sure, whenever you're using real-world money for anything, the age-old advice of "buyer beware" is always applicable.
I think the toilet was a brilliant addition for a passenger or second player seat for your buddy. Love this ship.
The bed can even be a third seat! Agreed though, this is an awesome addition to the game :)
commenting to help the vid, thanks for the quick upload
Thank you so much for the support!
I've got a vulture for salvage and a warlock for fighting, but the cutter is my go to for getting around due to those fuel tanks, thing's cheap enough even out of game to justify slapping one into my fleet as a runabout
Great vid! Very nice ship tbh, you can use it to mine and make some money to pay for a more combat capable ship in the future. This ship is pretty tanky too so even though its dps is a bit low, seems like you'll still be able to hold your own against other smaller ships.
Thank you! I'm definitely enjoying this ship, I think it is going to be the go-to recommendation for a lot of new players, and a no-brainer for anyone who isn't super excited about combat anyway. As you said though, that tankiness is nothing to scoff at!
i got it because of this video i like missions with boxes......i also bought the yellow skin to double as a taxi :)
Congrats on your new ship! I hope I was able to give you a balanced view of it :) The banana skin was definitely the way to go haha
It's too good to pass up. I CCU up from LTI Dragonfly 4 $5.00 ... a no brainer.
Nice review, I like the fact that you dug enough into research, to factor in the hull hit points . It confirms what I suspected ... that the Cutter may be the first drake ship with substantial armor and possibly the first starter to have it .
At 5 dollars that value is incomparable for sure, good call in my opinion! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and found it valuable. I hope this ship is the sign of armor of some sort being implemented slowly, even if temporarily it means higher hull HP.
Alright I'm sold! I'm a player with only an Aurora and a Dragonfly I got as a referral bonus and I'm thinking about upgrading my Dragonfly to the Cutter now. Love the look of the ship and all of the interior space it has.
It really is surprisingly cozy! One thing you should keep in mind is that referral vehicles can't be melted, so be sure you want to upgrade to the cutter! That being said, that would only be an issue if you wanted to get a ship between the value of the dragonfly and cutter... Which is nothing I think haha
@@Space-Tech very true haha. I like the dragonfly, but I rather upgrade it to something more fun and useful and then buy the dragonfly in game. The Cutter is only a €5 upgrade and way more useful to me.
The Space Caravan for old people!
It's the starter RV, before you get a Nomad haha
great video, for a second thought it's farrister's channel :)
Wow, that is high praise for sure, love his work! Thanks :)
looking at this little guy for box missions I do a lot of "legitimate cargo" in the cutty black and help other obtain it in my Gladius but sometimes I like to unwind and do box / investigation missions and this seems perfect
It really is perfect if you enjoy the drake aesthetic. It's a cozy ship for sure :) don't sleep on the 100 series either btw!
@@Space-Tech ive looked at them is really this or the Pisces I dont like 100 variants ive had one its just not my speed
Fair enough, the atmospheric flight is pretty poor on them for sure. Pisces would be fast to get in and out of if you value that plus the C8R is just awesome haha
8:32 lol I tested the time of travel between the atlas and the xl-1 and there was only 6 seconds difference at around 40mkm. Much, much, faster..... did they update it so there is actually a difference now? my test was almost a year ago now.
Yeah for 40mkm it's a full minute difference, for Arccorp to MT its more than 2 minutes. VK-00 is great!
@@Space-Tech niiice, good stuff
Nice review. Where did you get the 8000 Hull HP stats from? Can't find that info on RSI website.
Thank you! There are websites that extract these statistics from game code, scunpacked is useful to see the raw JSON format as well!
@@Space-Tech Thanks for the quick response! I wonder how erkul gets its information from SC? I'll check it out, thanks!
With no real exploration on the horizon, I upgraded my Beta to this guy. It blows my mind that they included more basic amenities in this than in the Cutlass.
Yeah other than combat and flight characteristics, this crushes the usefulness of the Beta! I'm hoping the Cutty picks up some polish when they get around to doing its gold pass in the future
really like how the colors pop in your video. Is this some sort of postfx that can be done within SC settings?
Thank you! I don't use it myself, but there are certain versions of ReShade that are approved by CIG, and those can be used to change the color profiles of your game :)
@@Space-Tech Noted! Excellent video btw
Thank you! Appreciate it :)
What are the best upgrade to get for guns, shields, and all that
The fighting meta is going to change quite a bit in 3.18 with the changes to bullet penetration. With those in mind, I would recommend ballistic gattlings for the guns as it'll still do great damage in an emergency, and laser repeaters if you want to attempt PvE with this thing. (Not it's strong suit). Shields largely don't matter as of yet, but anything military grade A will be best in class, only upgrade these if you have spare AUEC lying around. I'll make a deeper component guide if that's what folks would find interesting!
I like the Cutter, it's good value for what it offers. Ok, it doesn't have the best maneuverability or weapons, but it's easy to fly for someone getting into SC, gives you some room for cargo and delivery boxes at the same time, you can even fit a Nox in the back with your cargo. It even gets you where you want to go without thinking about fuel (as you alluded to with the talk of the VK-00).
My starter is the Nomad (CIG call it a starter, haha), so the Cutter would be a bit of a downgrade for me. One of my friends pledged for the Cutter the second day of the expo and loves his new ship.
Right now, best bang for buck starter by far!
If i do start star citizen i will get the drake cutter as i plan to do cargo runs cause ive played before and pvp isnt my thing
Totally fair, if you make an account you can use the link in the description to get some extra starting money! The Cutter is the perfect ship at its price if you're not into cargo. The only only starter that can fit a vehicle!
Razor crest from the mandalorian vibes
I saw that too!
I kinda think this one is perfect for a smuggler/trader start.
Already have it cuz it looks like a Japanese Puffer Fish. I like to PUFF when im in danger to assert size to the pirates/hostile.
Bring a railgun and shoot them out the back
If the MISC Freelancer is the Ford F-series of SC.
I suppose that would make the Drake Cutter the Dodge Dakota.
May not be as big or have any variants like it’s rivals or big brothers.
It still gets the job done tho. 🤘
It's going to be the Workhorse of the starters for sure!
Avoiding constantly fueling up or taking time to route in a fuel stop is enough to make it worth buying
Agreed, and if it's for a brand new player you'll probably end up blowing up before you have to refuel for awhile
I'm Gen X. And an original Wing commander and Privateer pilot. Unfortunately I've walked away from PC games because of the insane cost of upkeeping a PC. With all that being said I want into the Star Citizen universe some bad. I'm in the process of building up $4,000 to build a computer that will be able to play this game. Is The Game worth $4,000 for just the system to play it?
An old school CR fan I see! I don't think I'm ever qualified to tell someone how to spend their money on things, but in my eyes the game isn't worth close to $4000, that being said; you should be able to build a PC to run SC at basically the a very high quality for ~$2000 or so. If you're willing to play at lower settings you can get in for cheaper as well. Finally, they are making some headwind with improving the performance of the game, so definitely wait a few months to see how that pans out! If you've got more specific questions about components or what you'd need I'd be happy to help :)
I would like to point out that I have played the free week star citizen a few times on an 8-year-old mid-budget build. I was able to get along on low settings just fine. I would say any current gen PC will play the game reliably. Don't let me stop you from building your dream machine if you really want too, but you don't NEED a $4,000 PC to play Star Citizen. $600 will get you in the game (and most others).
Just to follow-up: On the current free-fly event, I am getting 40-50 FPS on high settings (clouds on medium and V-sync off). My new build has a 12th-gen i3, 16 GB RAM and a stock RX 6600 (about a $500 PC).
What’s the top speed and time to top speed?
1050.0 m/s is it's max speed, and I believe around 41.5 is time to hit that if you don't use any boost. The ship handles way better than it looks like it could!
@@Space-Tech thanks for the answer!
I also went to a random streamer on twitch I saw flying it and asked the streamer to show me the speeds.
Got to see it with and without boost, in a moon atmo and out of atmo.
1049/1050ms max speed in space, is around 500/600 non boost in moon atmo, gets to boost to 750-ish.
Using boost from 0 to full speed is quite quick (I didn’t time it, but felt under 10s)
Kinda looks like the Razor's Crest from The Mandalorian
All we need is a similar paint!
The big slot in the cockpit is for a heavy weapon.
If you're boreded gator is gonna need his gat
Nov 22 "Ready to take Anvil's newest ship for a spin? So are we."
This may be huge.
I won't spoil anything here, but we know what that ship is and it's going to be amazing for bunker running!
@@Space-Tech I'm so afraid to say it but it's Pisces isn't it? I was hoping for much more for the last 15 minutes.
Ahhh, yes if you were looking for a brand new ship unfortunately this isn't going to be it. As someone who loves anvil ships I feel your pain
@@Space-Tech yes, an Anvil capital ship is long overdue.
I have a 300i and store credits.
So I went for the Cutter so I can have Beauty and the Beast.
Do some touring in the 300i, and bring out the beast when the heavy lifting needs to get done!
Looks like the razor crest mando had
There's even some very Mando looking armor in game if you want to really get immersed!
The shower/toilet combo is a real life configuration and called a "wet head"
Wow I had no idea, definitely an interesting way to save space!
This ship is a joke .. it doesn't have a basic firepower and the maneuverability sucks too , which means even the low level bounties sucks 😕 Btw, thanks for your honest review unlike the other youtubers XD
There were definitely a lot of trade offs to make this ship so versatile outside of combat, that's for sure!
A a new player who bought it on looks, its a space ship, not a wannabe F16 or X wing. I'm not that motivated by combat flying so haven't done any, mind you the guns bugged out a day or so after starting so as an unarmed ship I must make my own way in a more circumspect hashion! Nowt you can do in such a craft if the kids looking to shoot down an easy target come calling so being at Grimhex is extra nervewracking.
I'm glad you're enjoying it! Welcome to the verse and let me know if you have any questions :)
Also, reclaiming your ship should fix the guns situation
Regrettably reclaiming made no difference. Folk suggested a reset but I gather some sort of wipe is imminent anyway. That might fix the custom paint job I bought as part of yhe package as that's not working either!
Yes that should fix it all! If you don't feel like waiting you can initiate what's known as a character reset which should fix almost everything. Be warned it will unequip any new components you got in game for your ship and you'd lose any ammo for fps weapons as well
no asymmetry like the Corsair *unfortunately*. Lol stahp. My OCD kills me looking at that thing.
Hahaha for some reason the asymmetry has to be juuuust right for me to enjoy it, and the Corsair nails it!
space RV?!
Space RV!
Van Life
Nice review. And no the Cutter is a pass for me. Everything it does the Titan does better. While the Titan has less hull, it is more agile and has two ways in or out. Not to mention the Titan will get a rework to bring it up to the current standards. For the price the Cutter really shines but again for 60$ starter package ship the Aurora MR is still a better choice at 45$ and the Titan at 70.
Thank you! Completely fair, I think if you are considering doing a good amount of combat, then the Cutter is just not even remotely worth it. That being said, at 45 , what do you think tips the scales towards the Aurora? Love both of the ships, and I think the flight experience is much better on the Aurora
@@Space-Tech the Aurora MR is surprisingly tough and agile, has decent range on hydrogen fuel and even it's quantum tanks which are pretty much an industry standard. Then we get into firepower. The base MR has 4 size 1 guns that are tightly packed around the ships cockpit which makes it easy to aim and surprising amount of firepower, along with it's 2 size 2 missiles. Then you have the two size 1 shields and relatively tough hull, modest cargo capacity without the need to have specialized loading or unloading. And it is more compact. While you lose creature comforts, let's be real, you aren't going to be living in it. Also the Aurora line in general offers some of the best landing visibility out of any ship out there. Lastly the Aurora is one of the most unassuming and often overlooked ships, easily one of the best smuggling or scout ships out there. No one bothers to kill an Aurora.
