  • Amber Heijneman is a young adult who has had type 1 diabetes since the age of 15. Together with her mother, she started looking into possibilities, for her and her little brother, to keep their blood glucose healthy and stable. Adjusting nutrition seemed a logical but complicated choice. Experience and research showed that lifestyle modification, in the self-management of type 1 diabetes, is not actively promoted by many healthcare professionals. This while Amber and her entire family experienced numerous health benefits by applying Dr. Bernstein's lifestyle method.
In October 2020, this blossomed into the founding of Diabetes 1 In Your Own Hands (Diabetes 1 In Eigen Hand), with the goal of making knowledge about lifestyle modification a standard component in the treatment of type 1 diabetes. We have a long way to go in this; starting with a movement from the bottom up. Diabetes 1 In Own Hands has an online support group, shares knowledge and experiences through animation, blogs and lectures.
Amber Heijneman has been nominated for the Shakingtree Award by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport for her activities within Diabetes 1 In Own Hand. This award focuses on bringing about change in healthcare in a positive light.

Wow 18 jaar. Goed verhaal en mooi om te zien dat zo’n jong iemand enthousiast is om kennis te delen.
