    I saw Ride with Lush back in the day. I think it was Mark's birthday. I gave him a leather bracelet and saw him wearing it in the NME afew months later.

      What a sad little life you must lead.

    120 minutes was how i discovered Ride & a lot of other Amazing alternative bands. Thankfully we had this back in the day!

    This music is just the BEST !!!!!!! All the stuff that came out in the early 90's to late 90's - and now there's a bit of a resurgence, though done a bit differently, still potent. Ride, MBV, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and countless others paved the way!

    Thank you. I love Ride. Discovered them in around '91. Don't know how. I live in the US. It's not like they were on the radio. Nope. Way too good for American radio.

      Xan Rosendahl That's right! 120 Minutes ruled. I discovered so many bands through 120 minutes, and I didn't even live in USA, but in the ex-Soviet Union at the time. The minute the MTV was allowed and broadcasted on cable, I was hooked :)
      120 Minutes gradually became Alternative Nation over time, but it was nowhere near as good.

      I stayed up past midnight to watch 120 Minutes. Only good thing on MTV...then MTV Raps replaced it, I think. Pissed me off.

      My most impressing experiences on 120 Minutes: The Breeders - Cannon Ball; Sloan - Underwhelmed; it was both the sound and the video which was something completely new

      120 Minutes was the only way for many of us to learn about good music in the late 80s/early 90s, when popular music was at its nadir in the US. I still remember the night they played the video for 'Taste' and I instantly and forever became a Ride fan!

    This is a great concert! A new sound (britpop/retro) before most jumped on the bandwagon, great harmonies and some powerful sounds notably "Let's get lost".....I think a lot of people were disappointed that they had changed by this point but I think Ride were still great here(although "Tarantula" is a bit rubbish)

    Having been a big fan of Ride's first 2 albums and shoegaze in general, I hated their 3rd album when it came out. Partly though it was because I was a teenager in LA growing up on Rodney on the Roq, and Andy&Mark had stopped by that show before they recorded Carnival of Light, and did this amazing acoustic set of about 4 of those songs with some of the most lovely harmonizing I'd ever heard. Man, I wish I could get my hands on the recording of that show, must have been late 1993.

  • @uk1988tb303
    @uk1988tb303 11 лет назад +27

    I wouldn't say huge. I always thought they were better than Stone Roses, yet their debut album is critically acclaimed as one of the top ten best albums of all time, while Rides debut is mostly forgotten by the masses. Rides's early EP's & debut blew Stone Roses out of the water.
    As much as I loved the Roses (Blackpool ballroom was one of my favorite gigs of all time) I still thought Ride was a better band.

    Thanks for the post - I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Between 1990-92 Ride were an incredible live band. The Nowhere and Going Blank Again tours were immense, but after the Reading Festival of '92 they lost the celebratory feel. Alan McGhee charts their breakdown in his recent autobiography; it seems Andy and Mark both thought they were the biggest rock star on earth and the overblown egos ruined a wonderful writing team. This performance sums up the dreary mess they had become. Mind you, that Loz couldn't half drum...

    • @christco120
      @christco120 9 лет назад +6

      +Hope'sNeverGone They were/are kind of co-lead singers. By the time this record came out, they were getting competitive and started singing their own songs more than sharing them as much. I actually saw them last night, and they don't perform anything after Going Blank Again with the exception of Black Night Crash, and it seemed about 50/50 to me which one was singing lead.

    • @electricmagazine1
      @electricmagazine1 7 лет назад +5

      Mark Gardener was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Andy Bell was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist AND the main songwriter. Being the main songwriter he wanted more of the limelight (i.e. Mick Jones from Foreigner) and decided to be the lead singer on some of his own songs. That escalated to singing lead vocals on all of his own songs. Which, as you can see on the video above, destroyed the band.

  • @chillidogdupree
    @chillidogdupree 12 лет назад +6

    Ride were a product of their time: they spearheaded, in some sense, the incredicble progression of underground Brit psychedelic rock with "Nowhere" and the LP "Today". They were good at playing in their frame of reference: psychedelia, base and drum par EXCELLENCE, and romantic lyrics with guitar spewing goosebump feedback. Their "whole" trumped the sum of the individual parts. But when they decided to be a pop rock band, they failed miserably. Eg, Loz drumming goes to shit because it MUST.
