This song always takes me back to the summer of 2013. I'd fucked up my AS Levels and had a cry about it in a park with a friend. Listened to this loudly on the train home. I just remember the feel of the sun on my face and the sense everything was going to be alright. Crazy to think that was almost a decade ago now.
All these years later this song still affects me on an emotional and visceral level like nothing else. The 90’s was the best music ever and the depth of lyrics unmatched since then. Looking back at how young they were, the musicianship and production are stunning. Going to see them in Berlin in Nov 2022. What a fantastic full circle that will be
What a beautiful music chiastic structure in your life! I am SO happy you get to do this. I almost did the same with a Weird Al concert, but I decided to save the money instead. Now, had it been Ride, the cash would have undoubtedly dropped. Have a safe and most wonderdul time, and think of us!🤗🙌🙏
I was 18 when the Eps came out - saw them at Bristol Poly, with about another 300 - and then at uni when Nowhere came out. And then finishing uni when this LP came out. Ergo following them round the country as was the habit for many in those days (I slept in Bournemouth train station after a Fanclub gig) and, like you, this sound is emotional, visceral, evocative, powerful... What a time. Everyone says how the era you grew up in is what you say was the best, that 'kids these days...' don't know.... But surely it's true? From about 88-mid 90s had to be the best periods, or at least one of the best given the 60s and late 70s punk times, to be young and into music. Since about 95? Lots of good and great albums but no overwhelming, all consuming 'scene'. Of course a lot of that has to do with the age you were at but, even so.... But back to Ride. Glorious.
yeah same as - also grew up in the 90's UK and was a fan club member - was at the 92 ULU event, then Reading 92 and then last year in Melbourne 🤣🤣just brilliant!
Ride & Lush toured together in the early 90s. I met Miki in Norman, Oklahoma. She was dating a Flaming Lips member(who went on to create Mercury Rev)...I see where they got their name(Lush), but I saw them in Dallas and it was amazing. Ride was magical and took the audience on a journey. The merch was a t-shirt that simply said Ride Lush Ride Lush...across the bottom of the shirt. I still have it.
I love the smooth velvety textures in Ride's music. Every instrument sounds so right, so tight. Energetic yet laid-back at the same time. Hard to believe this is 21 years old, it sounds so fresh. I kind of think this song is about travelling non-stop, and feeling spaced-out and weary because of it. (which I think is a theme running through the album). Wonderful band, they're not forgotten.
no social media, no smart phones, the Cold War was over and 9/11 was just another date. "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.”
I remember listening to this as a 10-year-old kid with my older brother. To me there's something about a lot of great music that makes it feel less like someone wrote it and more like they found it waiting to be played. A lot of the music from Ride seems that way, like it couldn't have worked any other way.
Wehenever im "depressed" or "blue" I take my bike to the streets and play this on my head... then I feel great again... leaving all my troubles behind. THANK YOU
When the drumming really makes the track. Love everything about this song, but the drummer is godlike. Quite literally perfect. Ah I miss the days of my youth, watching this band in a pub in Windsor, with a couple of hundred spellbound souls. Why isn't there this level of creativity around anymore....
One of the best bands I've ever seen live. Saw them on this tour and the previous with Lush opening. Amazing musicianship that holds up today. Can't wait to see them this month in Seattle!
First heard this in January 1992 in an "Our price" record store in Essex. Staff played the vinyl 12" at 33rpm, John Peel style; it sounded like a slab of doom rock, and utterly brilliant. When the confused looking part time sales assistant told me it was Ride's new single I was floored... those fey indie kids had apparently grown balls the size of Jupiter. Was rather disappointed when they adjusted the record deck to the correct speed. Still remains one of my favourite songs ever.
8:17 of pure perfection, one which every current music student should be made to listen and analyse as part of their course: The structure, the tightness, walls of sound pummelling like tsunami waves and Alan Moulder’s production. 0.42 when the guitars kick and 6:57 when they thrash it to bits. The energy is insane. Robert Smith wasn’t wrong when he said Ride played their guitars like chainsaws! This single and its b-side, ‘Grasshopper’, blew everything out of the water when released in Feb 92. It was a landmark moment. I certainly played this to death and was on heavy rotation on my Walkman for many years. Listening to it now, it’s still powerful and has stood the test of time and outlasted a lot of the dross that was circulating in the charts back then. Ride should have followed it up with ‘Cool Your Boots’ as the next single because ‘Twisterella’, no matter how great that was, was completely lost on many fans of their earlier eps. Hindsight…
When you play this song on bass and then and then add andy’s guitar in you notice how they interlock wonderfully. It’s a joy to play as a group and cover this !
Summer of 1992. Big old house in rural Västra Götaland, Sweden. A hippie community, or rather a circle of friends. KLF, Pixies and Ride on the stereo. Dreaming all kinds of dreams about girls glances and things yet to come. And then this song comes on with the thunder roar and the rain and the smell of moist earth.

well i'd say loveless is pretty psychedelic and it's almost universally regarded as the starting point of shoegaze. but i agree, it's ignorant to label the whole genre as psych
I heard this in some Burger bar in New York City last week near the WTC. Popped into Starbucks next door and the kid was playing Slowdive. Made my weekend.
Im seeing them when they next play Manchester! its the Nowhere tour but hopefully they'll have time to play this. fingers crossed. One of my favourites
My God, this is my anthem. Perfect cacophony, harmonies, just let it flow. It makes me want to get really high and gallop around the countryside on a horse shirtless like Putin. Nah, on a zebra... cause why not step it up to this song? One day zebra I'm gonna mount you and ride you. Mark my words.
The 4.00 mark. Absolute bliss 30 years after I first heard it. I used to rewind the harmonies at least four times!
For me this is Bohemian Rapsohdy of Shoegaze
and dreams burn is down is when the levee breaks
Hah that pretty much nails it!
This is way cooler than Bohemian Rhapsody and I am 67 years old.
The fact that there was a time when tens of thousands of people were rocking out to this song restores my faith in humanity.
Will it ever happen again? Does it happen anywhere anymore? Lockdowns and wokeism .. I was watching Stone Temple Pilots, live, doing Down and it's not even hands in the air .. it's depressing, I feel like freedom is dying ..

LUSH and RIDE!! These two bands changed my life
Pale Saints
For me the 5 bands that changed me were Joy Division, The Chameleons UK, Ride, Sex Pistols, and the Cure.
And Slowdive
Ride & Lush toured together in the early 90s. I met Miki in Norman, Oklahoma. She was dating a Flaming Lips member(who went on to create Mercury Rev)...I see where they got their name(Lush), but I saw them in Dallas and it was amazing. OOOOH! Ride AND Lush...I'm in pure heaven at the thought. 'Bout to make it happen now, Sweetness and Light here I come!
As brilliant as the band is, Alan Moulder’s production cannot be overstated. What a song!
8 minutes of musical perfection. The way this song is structured is just amazing. God Damn Ride are the best.
The ever increasing build of spirals of sound is almost religious. Majestic and exhilarating!!! The Utimate shoegaze track. ❤
I'll second that
Sandra Turner wonderfully put, it's fantastic tune ...and has codes!
I'm uploading a video on my channel right now about it 🤓
we live then we die. I don't care about the colours. I don't care about the truth. or something along those lines
Perfect description.
I think the ultimate shoegaze track would be soon by MBV or something
Ahhhh, shoe gaze at its finest.. Wolf Alice must have drawn inspiration..
One of the best opening tracks of all time, huge guitar riffs and an immense bass line too.
this album is still as good as the day i bought it 800000000 years ago......... so f good
Almost 9 minutes long and I can still listen to it over and over again. Not a moment wasted.
It's not having to work for 9 minutes. Nothing of purpose.
I love the smooth velvety textures in Ride's music. Every instrument sounds so right, so tight. Energetic yet laid-back at the same time. Hard to believe this is 21 years old, it sounds so fresh.
