  • I'm currently working on a series of Spring Landscapes and I thought that I would share the process of this painting with you, using Holbein Acryla Gouache on paper. I've filmed this video in a combination of time lapse and real-time, with a voiceover throughout explaining more about the paint, colours, and brushes I'm using, so that you can get a closer look at how I create these pieces. If you're an artist or illustrator, what are your favourite paints and why? I'd love to know (I always enjoy trying new paints!).

I love Daniel Smith Watercolors because so many granulate beautifully on good paper. I’m just getting into acrylic gouache and am mostly enjoying Turner, fairly inexpensive here in the US. They do dry quickly so I’m having to learn to paint a bit faster.

I agree! I have some Daniel Smith watercolours and I've used them a little but as I've mainly been painting in acrylic / gouache / acryla gouache recently, I haven't used them as much as I want to. But they're just beautiful paints and such amazing quality! I'm going to try to make sure I create something with them this coming week. I've also heard of Turner acrylic gouache and was tempted to try them as someone I know uses them and loves them. The only downside to acrylic gouache is that they dry too quickly - I agree with you about having to paint fast (or not squeeze too much paint out of the tube!).

Ok just read some articles on subject of drying too fast….just ordered a bottle of slow drying medium from Amazon….made by Windsor Newton…..going to see if this helps

I see comments from others about acrylic gouache…..just trying it myself. As a watercolorist i too am a little put off by their drying time…..but i love the look! Is there any way to slow down the drying time…..add glycerin….or an extender like the Windsor newton stuff….dont know the name that extends the drying time for watercolors? I feel so FORCED to paint quickly and it is not my style!

Loved that painting reminded me of the hills in California , fabulous to watch you create it , who is your favourite artist from the past and who do you admire if any currently .

Thanks Oliver! I love and am influenced by lots of different artists but I would say that the person who most inspires me is David Hockney. His beautiful use of colour, his style (I particularly love the tree paintings), and the fact that he never stops exploring and innovating. He's also fascinating and funny to listen to when interviewed!

It looks a bit like collage, beautiful, do you sometimes do collage as well?

Oh Natasha, I always love the patterns you add to your paintings! Also I really enjoyed the switching between speed paint and real time. With speeding up the whole process I think there sometimes can happen kind of a "false" impression, of how much time really goes into painting. Like my mom often says after she has seen one of my vlogs: "Looks like it took you half an hour or so. How does it come you have only 2 new paintings at the end of the week?" 😅

Ha ha - exactly this! My paintings often take many hours (or days in the case of large pieces) but it all looks so fast in a video. Thanks for your lovely comments, Julia!

I can feel the warm Spring. Love the colors and can't wait to see your series of that. Currently I am working on a series Ocean Waves with Sunshine. Of course I can't paint as much as I like to but some sketches are done and it already helps me feel better. Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful day~!

Thank you! I'm so enjoying working with these colours, and it's encouraging me to try other colours that I previously wouldn't have thought of using in my work. Your new series sounds beautiful! I hope that you find more time to work on it soon.
