      Welcome back! Glad you are taking care of yourself and feeling a bit better. This was a great video to return with, lots of gears turning in my mind after watching it. Would definitely enjoy more sketchbook time videos, especially a video about the details/patterns you add at the end of your pieces for those finishing touches. So great to see you back,and that you are feeling better. Sometimes just simply drawing in your sketchbook is a great not too taxing way to get back into your creativity, you can just almost swich of a little and just make diferent marks. I have a full set of the lightfast pencils and they are amazing and layer realy well and work well over watercolours. I love the message you put for yourself on the first page of your sketchbook like a little creative affermation. The drawing of the house would make a great postcard especially the second version,but maybe both as a little duo of postcards.Layering in colours and textures in differnt media is a great way to discover new ways of making artwork as hapy accidents and didcoveries can happen that can spark off new ideas. The liquitex arcylic marker looks interesting I didn't know they made these,may have to look into trying these,could be great for mixed media working.The Stabilo woody are a great pencil I use these a lot they are really versatile. Sketchbook times would be nice to see more of in the future.Carry on getting better and just ease yourself back into working and being back here on youtube.Hope you come back with new inspirations. (matt)
    P.s this video is a nice reminder of just how much working in our sketch books can be really healing and a great place to return to our cretaive journey or begin a new one after a time of not being able to work. Doing a mindful doodle is something I do sometimes when things are not good,they are a good way of giving yourself a time out too. Just find your own way back to creating full time, take time out when you need to,do something else like read or go for a walk. The way forward from this point wil gradually show itself to you,it could take you and your amazing work in a whole new direction,you'll find your wellbeing/creative wellbeing will work in tandem as you move forward.

    • @lizhart81
      @lizhart81 3 года назад +1

      I don't have any luminance, but I do have that extender set and too many Derwent pencils, so I can confirm that the larger size definitely works well with both the Derwent Lightfast and Drawing pencils. It's a real shame you can't buy them separately, though. I rarely use the one for standard diameter pencils, so I don't need another of those, but I could definitely put another larger diameter to use! As it is, I'm frequently swapping my sepia (red) and ivory black drawing pencils in and out, so those little stubs are pretty scratched and beat up at this point.

    (I love these layering techniques, but I am still confused as to how you achieved the look of the sky in your drawing.)

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад +3

      Aw, thanks Sharon! What a lovely comment. It's great to be back! 🤗 Basically, for the sky I used a very pale grey Pitt Artist brush pen, let it dry, and then went over the top with a Luminance pencil. You can vary the colours depending upon the effect you'd like to achieve, but I just tend to use the pencil very lightly over the top in a very loose, scribbly way, varying the angle of the lines/strokes. It creates a lovely loose, layered texture. I hope that makes sense! It may look different on the actual drawing compared to the swatch because I used the pen over a larger area (and therefore you get some overlapping of the pen marks, which makes it a bit more patchy).

    Love that Welsh cottage at 6:52, and the rich, textural fields at 8:08 (even though you say you overworked it - I love the layers!). Ithink the notion of commenting on your 'failures' (or experimentations as I like to call them!) in the sketchbook is a genius idea... The hillside behind the 'difficult day' cottage 10:13 is a beautifully intense backdrop - it reminds me of Cornish or Welsh slate mines. 🖤

      Ps I get migraines too (mine are very intense for a day or so and thankfully pass) so hard to pin it all down as mine seem to be partly hormones, food triggers, stress even the weather 🙄any jumble of the above can trigger them really. Anyhoo no unwanted advice just solidarity from a fellow sufferer.

    Hello Natasha and welcome back! So nice to hear that you are feeling good again💜
    I missed your videos and I enjoyed so much this sketchbook time one. I love that you shared with us all the experiments you did and the techniques you have found. To me is really charming and relaxing to watch at someone drawing and I was so pleased to learn how you achieved those amazing textures. It's like you are still painting, even when you are not using liquid paints, such as acrylic or watercolor.
    I was used to think that people "draw" with pencils and "paint" with paints, but it was a really conventional and rigid belief in a way. Since I've been following you I feel like you have taught me a lot. This is such a beautiful aspect of social medias.
    Thank you very much for sharing! 💜 I can't wait for the next sketchbook time video 🥰

    Welcome back! Were you using the etcher sketchbook? And what is your favorite sketchbook? I'm currently working in a moleskin sketchbook and I like it, but it's not holding up that great with my watercolor paintings. I have to be gentle with the paper.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Kate! I should have mentioned in the video that I've written in the description which sketchbook it is - this time I'm using a Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbook. They're similar to the Moleskine sketchbooks but much cheaper! I love using them for dry media and maybe a little paint, but they wouldn't hold up to very wet washes! I would say that these are my current favourite sketchbooks alongside the Etchr cold pressed watercolour sketchbook (which is obviously much better for paint!).

    Hello Natasha! I am certainly late to the party, but… I use Jackson’s pencil extenders. They are cheap (we can buy in bulk), effective and much more comfortable to hold than the Derwent ones, that I have as well (which are super expensive and only sold in a blister of two, one of which is too small for almost all the pencils - Luminance, Lightfast and even Polychromos). Thank for this video!

About pencil extenders... and you may already know this, but thought I would share it anyway. Hi!... only just recently came across your channel and have really enjoyed your artwork. Thank you for sharing 😊 ... I also have the extenders that are too large and if you are still waiting for the Derwent ones, you could try to wrap the end of the pencil in paper until you’re able to squeeze in the pencil and get a good grip. This way your extenders won’t go to waste perhaps?.... just an idea but it worked for me :)

    Hi Natasha, LOVE your artwork. Are you working in a watercolour sketchbook? Also, do you use a fixative on top of your sketches to avoid transfer. Transfer always chases me away from my pencils but I want to expand away from watercolour for a little while.

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 3 года назад +1

      You could use a fixative, or just cut a piece of baking parchment and stick it between your pages.

    • @NatashaNewtonArt
      @NatashaNewtonArt  3 года назад

      Hi Debbie! I've found that the transfer isn't too bad (I use Luminance, Derwent Lightfast, and Polychromos pencils mostly) so I don't use a fixative. The sketchbook here is a Royal Talens Art Creation - one of my favourites!

I could only see light grey in the watercolour type.

    derwent holder fits my luminance, but don't leave the holder under sun or heat, the handle part can get very slightly tacky, but it doesn't bother me. But also I just want to mention that I live in the tropical zone, so we are well over 32C on average everyday, and leaving that under the afternoon sun was my problem.

Today I fund the Luminance marks almost smelted invisible into the Pitt Pen colors. Have you experiensed anything similiar?? I realy love the texture the laying makes, but if the medias don't go together it't sad. Happy Easter
