There is a lot of inaccurate and outdated information in this video.
14: Well built power supplies don’t have this problem. Many of us have been connecting our laptops this way for years without issue. Modern power supplies even mostly shut down automatically with no load.
13: Modern laptops have better management that can cycle the battery when it’s full. Also, some laptops are so light that they rely on the battery to keep them upright. Not all laptops let you easily remove the battery, either.
12: Only in rare cases will trying to do something “too soon” cause issues. For most of us, it’s fine.
11: power strips don’t offer any real surge protection, and by the time there is a surge, it would have been too late for you to cut power anyway. If you’re worried about lightning, just unplug it.
10: this one about placement and ventilation is ok
9: ok, software maintenance is important, but registry editing is not recommended for the average user.
8: sleep and hibernation modes were specifically made for laptops, so people could transport them without having to wait for a full boot up. Both modes shut down mechanical devices. Also, hibernation is exactly the same as shutting it down, as far as the hardware is concerned.
7: exposing to sunlight - ok
6: mangling the cables - ok
5: mostly ok except for coolers. Unless the laptop is poorly designed, it should cool itself just fine on a flat surface.
4: cheap power supply - ehhh I’ll give you this one.
3: more and more laptops are coming with solid state drives, making fragmentation a non-issue. Running defrag tools on an SSD is not recommended.
    2: cleaning - ok
1: why would keeping headphones plugged in to the analog audio output when there’s no audio, pull any power? The only way I can think of is if they have a also have a condenser microphone built in.

Lithium ion batteries will lose their capacity if they are kept near 0% or 100% for long. Not sure how the chemistry works but they go under some kind of non reversible reaction which decreases the charge holding capacity. My asus laptop has a software where I can set the max battery level to 60% when I'm using it in always plugged in mode. I think that would increase battery life.

Once you've wiped the Vaseline off, put the laptop in a bucket of water. Just as water helps plants to grow, water will allow your laptop's operating system to upgrade itself organically. Examples:
A original power suply has no issues watsoever in being connected first to the outlet. (Electronic misconception, on how de psu work)
Cleaning registry from time to time. Actually its risky to do it, and unless you're removing a problematic key it wont do much to performance nor it will affect in any way the logenvity. You may just end up breaking some programs by removing important keys.

moving your computer around in sleep mode has actually become less harmful in recent years thanks to solid state drives becoming the norm. They have no moving parts and therefore cannot become damaged by getting jostled around. It's the same with disk fragmentation, and in fact with SSDs you actually DON'T want to do anything about this because the drive does wear leveling on purpose which purposely fragments the drive to prevent one NAND cell from getting written to more often than another so that cells on the drive don't start dying prematurely as SSD NAND cells actually have a limited number of write cycles before they die. On top of this, defragmenting the drive would just cause the drive to get worn out faster because to relocate the data the drive controller has to zero out the one bit and write a one to another bit just causing both of those bits to have one less write cycle available before they die.

Nowadays, like 12 out of these are completely invalid. Laptops have surge protection. Batteries have overcharge protection. Laptops have better USB power management etc.
Here are my tips for keeping your laptop alive:
    1) Clean from dust on a daily basis, after you finish working, so that it doesn't accumulate.
2)Once every 2 months, unscrew the laptop and perform a deeper clean.
    3) Prefer Ethernet over Wi-fi.
    4) You can clean the display with a glasses wipe and a special display spray. This guy is nuts.
    5) Do not run the laptop when the temperature around you exceeds 25°C. Or if you do, make sure you have a cooling pad.
    6) Do NOT shut down the laptop every time. Boot cycles will in general ramp up the usage of both your CPU and your SSD. Just close the lid. Restart once every few days to prevent bugs. (for Linux only when you get kernel updates)
    These are my tips.

    1. Batteries are not removable anymore and it's 2019, voltage regulators make it mostly unnecessary.
    2. Sleep mode may be harmful (not sure), but hibernate is not harmful at all. When you hibernate your computer, the system copies your entire RAM in a compressed manner to your hard disk, then actually shuts down and loads it back on boot. So while the laptop is hibernated, it's drawing 0 power, just like a shut down.

Sleep mode is only harmful if your battery is bad or something software-wise is wrong. With everything working properly, if your laptop is sleeping and the battery drains to a certain level, the laptop is supposed to wake up, long enough to properly enter hibernation (or shut down if you disable hibernation).

I strongly doubt the battery trick. That issue with batteries tend to be less valid these days as batteries become more smart and manage energy themself for self preservation. It is the same with smartphones. That's also the reason why certain constructors don't make removable batteries any more.

#14 - i believe the recommended way is to power it up first, before connecting the load - (the laptop). that way, the power brick has been already fully initialized. what was recommend has putting more stress to the power brick and possibly to the laptop.
but of course, what's in the manual should be the authoritative.

    • @the2323guy
      @the2323guy 4 года назад

The power brick is not a computer.

    • @EdelSM
      @EdelSM 4 года назад

@@the2323guy, thank you for trying to correct me. but i am referring to the power supply (adaptor) when i said power brick. that switching power supply has automatic high in-rush current and power factor corrector. so even without load, the power supply will not get damage. in fact, it is better you plug the brick first unconnected to the laptop, and once it is powered up is is ready at the right voltage level and when you plug it in, the laptop sees the actual voltage (say 19vdc).
when you plug the brick in the outlet with the laptop connected, the laptop sees the voltage from zero volts initially up to the right level. i do not know if that has effect on the laptop, but i suspect it does stress the brick (but propeely designed one will not matter).
and yeah, you're correct. power brick is not a computer.
