If you leave your PC on all the time, It's a good idea to restart your computer from time to time, which can fix Windows problems and clear memory.

The only way you can know if your computer has failed is to turn it on, but if it fails to boot, you don't know whether there was a hardware failure when you turned it off or when you turned it on, but either way, if you'd never turned it off, it would most likely still be working now.

One reason for turning off modern computers is similar to the reason for storing data on external devices: You don't necessarily want everything to be connected to the network 100% of the time for security reasons. Also, if there is a lightning storm, make sure your computer is turned off and unplugged, and have a good surge protector as well. Another reason to store data on external drives that also works for cloud storage: Data backup. NOTE: This does not work for Windows programs and apps because they also have Windows registry entries that do not transfer easily if something happens to your main computer.

I heard it’s better to leave a computer running constantly with a HDD. It is easier on it to keep running than to turn it off and start it up again. A hard drive only has so much spin-ups until it can fail. This is why some office buildings or other places leave them on 24/7 and can last much longer that way/

If you get the right kind of UPS for your desktop, they often include software that you can install and a USB cable that will connect your UPS to your computer. The software can shout your computer off safely if you UPS is about to run out of power. It also gives you a way to monitor the power feeding your computer as well as different options that you can adjust to change the behavior of the UPS. I have one on mine that has a setting that I can either have the computer stays on as long as possible before shutting down or I can change the setting to safely turn off the computer if the power is off for more than 5 minutes. Most have a setting you can change the time. It also keeps a log of the power outages and how long the power was off. Most of these devices have an audible sound that occurs when the device switches to battery. You can set quiet times or even disable the audible alarm through the interface. I usually leave mine on all the time because I have my computers set to receive their automatic updates during my off times like when I'm in bed. All of my computers run Windows 10. My computers receive these updates too. But I have my computers set to restart themselves during the morning hours when I'm sleeping. If you do leave your computer on all of the time, restarting you computer at least once a week will help purge the memory as well.

One recommendation I have for smart phone users is to go into your settings and set a auto phone off/phone on schedule.
It minimizes certain charging issues if you charge when you sleep and lets the processors rest.

From a purely mechanical point of view it is not a good idea to leave your computer, especially a laptop, on all the time. Computers when powered on have fans inside which regulate temperatures to critical components such as the CPU and GPU. Fans draw in air and also dust which accumilate's on the fans themselves, reducing efficiency, and also on the heat sink of the components which need to be cooled and will eventually lead to a complete system failure and a very expensive repair bill - if a repair is even possible. As in the case of many Apple products. Some high end systems such as data servers are specifically designed to run 24/7 in an environment where they are also monitored 24/7. The average computer is not designed that way,

My sister has a Chromebook and she would often get problems with it after a few weeks of simply setting it to 'Sleep' by closing the lid on the computer. I showed her how to find and press the 'POWER OFF' button on her Chromebook and simply turning the computer 100% off every now and then totally got rid of all of the problems she was having with her computer. The same thing for her Router, I showed her how when it was having problems that simply turning it off, waiting 10 minutes, and then turning it back on, would get rid of the 'static electrical charges' that were causing the problems in the thing. Just turning an electronic device off, waiting 10 minutes, then turning it back on, would often solve problems that device was having.

A computer technician's busiest time is a Monday morning: People go into work after the weekend and find someone's switched off their computer. When they switched it back on it doesn't work. A lot of faults occur when you cut the power to a computer, even if you allow it to shut down correctly. A daily reboot usually clears any residual memory corruptions; although it is good to perform software maintenance at least monthly, weekly if at all possible, and daily doesn't hurt.

0:35 It won't neccessarily damage it but it will accelerate wear on things like the on/off switch and the hard disk. The hard disk has to spin up every time you switch it on, and in that process uses far more power than just bringing out of sleep or hibernation.

I use Linux. I never shut down the machine. You don't need to shut them down as the OS is designed to run indefinitely. There's been times my desktop machine has accumulated a period of 3-4 months of uptime between reboots and it will play steam games, movies, file serving and editing. I also have a laptop near top-of-the-line, but that one I do reboot all the time. Shutdown or not, it's not as big a deal with Linux.

A plea for change, for a mindful sight.
Don't switch off, they cry, the power so grand,
But heed this caution, let's understand.
Energy whispers in the crackling wire,
Yet conservation is what we require.
A symphony of sockets, humming so loud,
Amidst the chaos, a plea from the crowd.
"Don't switch off your PC," the command is clear,
Yet in this dance of electrons, let wisdom steer.
The digital pulse, a heartbeat so fast,
But in this rhythm, let sustainability last.
Lights, oh radiant beacons in the night,
A plea to keep shining, a beacon of light.
But in this brilliance, find a subtle glow,
A balance to strike, for the Earth to bestow.
The faucet, a symphony of liquid grace,
But a plea echoes softly in this watery space.
"Don't switch off the flow," they sing in accord,
Yet let droplets remind us, it's a precious hoard.
    America's exasperation, resources strained,
In this abundance, let not apathy be gained.
Don't switch off the call to conserve and save,
For the land we cherish, the oceans and cave.
In this warning poem, let consciousness rise,
As the Earth sighs beneath our endless skies.
Don't switch off the urgency, the need to care,
For our shared home, a planet rare.

Hibernation does not keep your computer on. It turns your computer off and saves your session to the memory/RAM. Once you turn it on again, it will restore your session.

I bought Adele mini desktop refurbished quite a while ago. I turn it off every night. I also turn off the modem and I have found many times more than not. Then when I come back to it to turn it on again it’s in standby mode not power off mode it does it all by itself. That’s why I turn the wifi off so nobody can get into it.

I used to leave it on 6 days a week and turn it off on the 7th day. When that one broke down I switched to do it every night.
I noticed if left on for more then 3 days it becomes sluggish and sometimes unresponsive.
Maybe that was just my experience though =D
Either way, power outages can still harm your desktop computer. I should invest in a ups.

Not all computers, especially the Macintosh because Shutting Down & Restarting doesn’t give your Mac time to do some Important Maintenance of the Operating System, that doesn’t normally happen when you are using the machine. It would slow down performance doing maintenance in the background, and not letting it do this slows down the performance of your Mac over time! There’s also a brief ‘Stress Test’ thats performed by Diagnostics that run upon Startup or Restart to test the physical condition of the internal components.
Just simply putting the machine to Sleep actually consumes Less Power, than normal. Only Restart for Essential Software Updates that require it, or your machine is behaving oddly. Only Shut Down when moving it to another location!

I have windows 10 pro with ssd. If I put my computer in sleep or hibernation mode it will "go to sleep" as you would expect, BUT when you press a key or move the mouse, the computer and fans come on but windows will not boot up. You can't press the power button to shut it down either. It does absolutely nothing. You have to turn off the power at the power supply, and then it may or may not boot up. The fans come on but there is no "bios beep". The only way I've found to get it to boot up again is to unplug everything including the mouse, keyboard or any other usb device.
However, if I do a normal shutdown or restart it boots up in 4 seconds with absolutely no problem at all. It's only when I use sleep or hibernation mode I have problems with windows won't boot and the power button won't function. Figure that one out.

There's a reason why the first thing tech support tells you to do is reboot your machine. It's like cleaning up your place before you have people over. Everything runs much more smoothly.

on linux, it's called suspend. slowing down is much more about file system. ext4 is much more superior file system in my opinion. I have an old hardware that runs way faster with linux and I mean way, way faster. temp files and caches can also be auto deleted according to your preference. Seriously! I wonder why there are less people using linux...
