I turn off my PC, unplug it, and then completely disassemble it and place all of the components in static resistance bags, and then I reassemble it when it's time to start back up.
+Justin Hall I go one step further and return all of the components to the shop and get a refund, Then when i wake up i re-buy all of them and turn it on.
I pour water on mine until it sparks and shuts off, then in the morning I use a blow drier until it powers up. I never have any problems with that method.
I throw away the computer and get a new one whenever I need to use one again. It's a pricey lifestyle, but I haven't had any issues with my computer(s)
Mrs. Roper I get 6 hours of sleep a day and it’s perfect. Everybody is different. And because I have been Bodybuilding for the past couple years, more than 6 hours of sleep causes my muscles to tear more and become more painful. Btw I sleep from 11pm to 5am and my schedule is -Eat Breakfast + Coffee -Morning Jog -Work -1.5 Hours at the gym -Sleep And this schedule requires me to sleep the same amount of time every night so I can fit all of these into my schedule every day. Life’s great and very refreshing!
I got a 2TB hard disk drive with a 2 year warranty shipped to me for only $15 more than it costed me to get a single barebones (non RGB, 120mm) Corsair case fan from Best Buy. Then again, all small components/hardware/accessories from Best Buy are normally 3-5x what they normally would go for if all other stores weren’t out of stock right now.
This guy really is impressive, NCIX should really give him a big raise before he quits and makes his own tech tips channel, actually he should do that regardless.
Debi Games -That is actually not amazing for your PC to do 0.0 it takes a long time probably because of the updates it has accumulated or the fact that you have been subjecting your PC to possible file corruption on a nightly basis...good god
i have a friend who never shuts off his pc, and i've been mentioning every now and then that i think he should turn it off when he's not using it. and a few weeks ago, his pc died and needed a replacement part to work again. i ain't saying i knew that this would happen, but i fucking knew that that shit would happen
LOL My sister is like that. She leaves her laptop on even when she is going to sleep. On top of that she gets angry if I suggest to her that she should be turning it off and tells me that I should "mind my own business" LOL. Though miraculously her laptop has never had any issues. While I, despite being a high maintenance guy who cares for his laptops has run into a plethora of problems with almost every laptop/PC I have ever owned. Life is just unfair to some people I guess LOL.
@@tygaman89er I turn off my laptop, then unplug the laptop. Back when I used PC, I would turn off the computer then switch off the power supply from the wall socket, because of the unpredictable electricity in my country. Sometimes, after power outages, the electricity would come back on with more than required strength, frying electronics.
@@omairtech6711 Oh okay, because I noticed when I turn off my gaming PC my RGB lights from the motherboard & mouse is still on, so I just wanted to know if I should flick that switch back there and turn everything off?
How I do it is: Turn it on when I wake up in the morning, use it a little. Turn it off when I leave for work. Turn it on when I get home I turn it off when I go to bed
+Matthew Purcell I do pretty much the same thing, but I set it to sleep when I go to sleep. So my list would be: Turn on when get back home from work, we both sleep, turn off when leaving for work.
same. I'm on mine all the time. mainly for games. Since I got a new keyboard and mouse with Led's, I have to switch it off from the back of the tower or the mouse still glows as it has no off switch. the keyboard does.
no joke that shit used to happen to my old pc on a daily basis. my shit was right next to the window and when my roomates started smoking i would watch someone exhale a cloud and watch that cloud hover over, get sucked in through the top, out the back, and then out the window. part of me died with every hit
I shut my computer off every night because my PSU is super loud and the case has super bright LEDs on the power button. If I don't shut it down, it's nearly impossible to sleep.
I know it's a Seasonic oem, but XFx's fans are just garbage. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO loud, perhaps it's defective but many people have RMAd their XFX to no avail. I'm not gonna bother sending it back for now.
I shut down and unplug, no good reason i just newer felt comfortable knowing appliances had power while i sleep. Guess its a irrational fear of fire or maby deep down i fear they are gonna revolt in my sleep and take over Earth.
It shouldn't be. You might need to enable it in the system settings, might just have disabled it by default because it does eat a fair amount of diskspace.
It's actually pretty easy to get back. Just go to Power and Sleep settings, click Additional Settings, go to Change what the Power Button Does, and check Hibernate
Turn it on at: control panel > hardware and sound > power options > system settings. Hit the Change settings that are currently unavailable. That will allow access from the power button menu.
For Desktops... You might want to turn it off AND unplug it if Lightening is in the area. For all computers... Another good reason to shut it off (or at least sleep or hibernate) is to protect your computer from Viruses (i.e. even though you aren't doing anything, someone else may remotely penetrate your defenses and access it while it's unattended).
+Daxxie GFX (Gaming) It's like what Linus said, doing this isn't going to dramatically deteriorate the components to the point where they're going to die in a relatively short amount of time. Every component dies eventually. The point is to have them last long enough for your needs. For example, I tend to replace my GPU every 2-3 years (I usually get the highest or second highest tier in a given period of time). Because of this, it's of less concern to me if my particular practices leads to my GPU having a greater risk of failing at year four instead of that same risk existing at year six. This is of a greater concern to those that replace their GPUs less frequently, and of zero concern to those that upgrade every year.
I turn my PC on in the morning and off at night. Another consideration that Linus didn't mention is that if you leave it running for several days without shutting down, your OS can become unstable. That's why the most common fix for an issue with your phone is to turn it off, cause no one really does it.
+Robert Rismyhr If you're not really using the PC and have all the power saving options well configured it really can go on with ALL fans off. No dust build at all with the fans stopped. Well, maybe on the top of the case but you know what i mean :|
pyre78 Passive cooling via the heatsinks with the fans off can be enough in idle. My psu for example rarely uses its fan because it doesn't have to, even when gaming.
+pyre78 I understand your concern but heatsinks DO a lot of passive cooling on their own. When turned on but idle my 4770K rests at just 800mhz with 1-2% load and i can keep it that way for hours with an increase in temp of just 7-8 degrees (celsius). Don't be scared to try it some day :)
For the past 4 years I only put my laptop to sleep. Perfectly fine. The only times I do a restart or shutdown is when I'm troubleshooting, installing updates, or upgrading a piece of hardware.
This is the answer i was looking for cuz my 1st laptop its the (Aspire 1 Windows 7) got broken i dont really know what happen becuase every time i turn it on it just shut down its own even whenever im using it like watching movie or scrolling through my facebook for some reasons it just turns of on its own it doesnt go to all that shutting down process its just suddenly black screen
It's probably getting too hot and preventively shutting down. Try asking on a pc store to change thermal paste, or do it yourself if you know what you are doing.
This laptop is known to have this problem (had a work associate with one) make sure you do get rid of it. if you want to keep it I would replace the windows operating system with a linux distribution, it is lighter on the processing hardware. You can also check the thermo paste like ramzy sad while your in there, and as always adding max ram won't hurt.
it just increase your chance of broken down, but many laptop nowadays is very durable anyway I got surplus money so I would buy cheap laptop and not taking care of it
Ramzy Hieds Make sure the thermals are ok underload if not inspect fans if they are running fine try and replace older thermal paste, if the problem pressist check the battery maybe its faulty or getting old, and make sure the connectors that are connected to the battery are clean, nothing seems wrong still, get it to. computer store.
Besides, you are much more likely to replace your computer due to new technologies and features, than from wear and tear from shutting off the machine.
Sleep if you are gonna be gone for a little bit, Like grabbing lunch, going to pick up someone etc. Hibernate if you are gonna be gone for a while; If you are like going to bed or to the beach, etc. Shut down if you want Shut down if you are moving a computer somewhere else.
For probably 4ish years I put my computer in sleep mode each night and rarely powered it down completely. Now the past 3ish years or so I have been powering it down each night instead of putting it in sleep mode. I noticed some improvement in my computers 'health' having opted into powering down nightly and will definitely continue to do so having lots of experience with both. But everyone's gonna have a different opinion I'm sure, and when all said and done, my computer worked fine with either method. && despite having a cheap harddrive I can spare the 7seconds of bootup time... its not like I sit there an watch it anyway pft turn it on and go make some coffee son. Is it still 7 seconds of boot time if your there for 0seconds of it? :P
+The Great Doge ya it happened to me before ... i was downllading a game and i left it and i went to sleep next morning i was thinking that the game was completed downloading but i found that the pc also ran into sleep mode lol
Memory leaks are a real issue. So regular shutdowns are good. Though my server may run for months at the time without a hard reboot, my desktop gets one almost every day.
Doesnt servers also have ECC memory which is supposed to combat this? Or something like that? Personally i have left my desktop on but thats only if im napping and i prefer it being off if not in use.
Waking up from hibernation with an SSD is way faster than with an HDD but it obviously isnt faster than booting normally because booting normally with an SSD is also faster than with an HDD. Especially when running WIndows 8 or 10: Those have a feature called Fast Boot which is basically semi hibernation. It writes everything system relevant to the hard drive but not the programs you are running so that it will boot very quickly. And what do you think is faster: Copying 1GB from SSD to RAM or copying 2-8GB? It just depends on your needs. Maybe youre running many programs sorted in a special way on your monitors. Then the few seconds faster boot isnt worth it preparing everything again, instead of just hibernating.
prettylolitadoll my computer boots in 2 or 3 seconds (from bios to login screen). In order to wake up from hibernation in 2 seconds it needs to read 4Gb/sec from the SSD and the sata interface itself will limit it to 600Mb/seg.
I am rendering in Adobe AME and need to transport my laptop without shutting down and losing my render progress. So I need to know if hibernation or sleep mode would be okay to transport my laptop safely without the hdd beig damaged. Looks like hibernation is my best bet.
Depends on how long I'm transporting it. 15 minutes? Sleep. 2 hours? Hibernate. I rarely turn my machine off. I usually use hibernate so that my files are already up and ready to go when I'm ready to go back to work.
David Fernandez No need for research my laptop with a 250 GB SSD and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM boots from fully of to on in like 40-50 seconds, maybe i need to reinstall windows?
+Dr. Smith Is your ram running in dual channel? How much crap is autostarting? How much time does your bios waste before starting Windows? Which Windows version are you running? - Also Windows 10 never "really" shuts off, but puts a part of the system into hibernate, to make the next boot faster.
7 years, runs continuously. Alienware Aurora with Intel Core i7 2.67GHz, 24GB RAM, Win7 64-bit OS. Mine has been powered on pretty much since the day I bought it. The water cooling system went out last year and replaced it with a Corsair H80i unit. Other than that, I've added a hard drive. It gets shut down occasionally when new software requires it, but otherwise she's been running non-stop since 2009.
+Matthew Curtiss I guess I'm lost. My PC is running fine, so I'm not sure why you'd comment with RIP. I also have a Gateway with a 133mhz processor that's still running, and I've had it since 1997.
+Saarth Jauhari You should seriously consider getting a router that supports bittorrent instead of having your PC on 24/7 if all you need that "24/7" for is downloading torrents.
Nope! Programs are shut down by power off. Reloading the 20 internet tabs I keep open at all times is a 20 second chore I don't like when I power off/on my pc. Also has to start up Spotify and RealTemp. Also has to enter your windows user password if you use one. Putting it into Hibernation is the way to go with SSD. Everything on desktop is kept the way it is.
Why you have 20 internet tabs open? Why dont you just save them in your browser? Also why you have user pasword, if you use hibernation (if that requares a password to open pc back from it)?
I always shut down, saves power, reduces dust buildup and allows your system to unload random crap that builds up in the memory, so next time you turn your computer on its fresh and ready to go.
But good air flow keeps the the air (and dust) moving and stops it from settling on top of all your components, so as long as you have good filters (therefore reducing the amount of dust that comes in with the air) surely just making sure the dust doesnt settle would be better?
What do you mean by "good air flow"? A "wind tunnel" like one? Based on my expirience the dust sticks to all air resistant parts of the components and it doesn't go away with the flow. I use an air pump to clenup fans and radiators. And I do agree that you need filters, but without good sealed case it won't help as much as it can.
I just don't like having to sit through a long boot up, it wastes time. Hibernating is basically the same thing, only it boots up way quicker and it brings you back where you were so you don't have to open up all of your programs again.
Damn, wish you had addressed the validity of security concerns with leaving an internet-connected machine turned on without an human operator. I have a friend who with a background in IT who swears up and down the reason he leaves his machine turned off when he is not around is because if his PC were to be attacked, as long as he is at his workstation he can address the threat immediately before it can do any damage. If he were to leave his machine turned on while he was away, it gives an infected file an opportunity to do its thing undisturbed or a zero-day vulnerability to be exploited on a piece of running software. But I mean, he also kind of wears a tin foil hat.
What so he expecting to be able to do about a threat, and how is he expecting to be able to address it? Any virus that wants to be undetectable, is, and if a virus really wants you to have some reason to not just end the task or shut of your PC they just delete the boot directory, like memz does, there's next to nothing you can do against a well codes virus, plus turning your PC off and on is worse for previously mentioned viruses that just fuck with the boot directory, there is nothing that he could do against a threat like that and he might just turn it on to find no OS
Also, his argument may make sense for him, but it doesn't help me much at all. Even if my computer was attacked while I was present, it's not like I am gonna go full wargame and fire back at the hacker. So It doesn't really help me a lot.
I have a smart meter for my energy. I can tell you that watching youtube videos all night uses the same amount of power as boiling the kettle once for the coffee to keep me awake to watch them.
maybe if the pc was idle yeah, it doesn't draw a whole heap of power while it's idle so I could believe it. I always keep my PC on though so I started mining crypto while I sleep so earn a very small amount of extra cash on the side lol
@BAT EATER nicehash is a pretty popular one, no programs/sites require an actual mining rig, all of them can use your desktop pc. it's just that it isn't a feasible option to mine with a desktop pc because a dedicated bitcoin miner will have a much higher hashrate compared to your gpu/cpu. i only mine overnight while i sleep and mine roughly $2/night, it's more beer money than anything.
Two parts are subject to failure: the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, bearings in fans, and dirt accumulation on heatsinks. Unplugging the computer saves the electrolytics. Going into any form of hybernation/sleep saves heatsinks/fans. There is also another part most likely to fail, one of the myriad connections between parts, solder or mechanical. That is largely driven by age, temperature, dust, and humidity (and presence of corrosive chemicals). Heatsinks can be cleaned with a blast of air (for desktops).
Windows crashed after few days? Funny, I didn't have anything happen like that. I don't shut my PC off/hibernate/sleep. I only shut it down when I'm away from home more than 2 days. Your PC probably got some issue. Go have it check.
My PC is on all hours of the day, generally. If I'm home, I'm using it frequently. I use videos on the computer to help me fall asleep, and they're on loop while I'm sleeping. I looked up this video to see if this is bad for the computer.
I always turn mine off every night, I had a teacher that only ever put here laptop to sleep it got sooooooooooooo slow because of memory leaks that she was gonna buy a new one I restarted it for her and she was amazed at how fast it was (also it was a macbook pro)
+michael mckinlay Programs use RAM space to store temporary data. A good programmer will remove his data and free up the space the instance the temporary data isn't useful anymore. Memory leaks occur when a programmer fails to free up and "release" the space.
+michael mckinlay I think its when a file will not get removed from the ram after its been used, it keeps taking up space until you're left with no ram and pc slows down. Don't quote me on this though.
Imagine how shit his computer must be. One of those dell computers. If it's never been turned off for 20 years how do you replace components without frying the motherboard.
I use my PC (desktop) for the longest period time in the morning, which is when I write my tales, research, or shop.I step away from my PC for 2 to 3 hours intervals, so when I step away from it during the day, I simply put it to sleep for those few hours. Then I come back to it and check things -- Facebook etc. Then when I step away again I put it in sleep mode. But at night, when I go to bed, I turn it off for those 6 to 8 hours. Then it's rinse & repeat starting in the morning. 1. Use, sleep @ day breaks. 2. Bed time, off.
My PC is 7-8 years old and it's been shut down every night for all of those years. Every component still works great, and the only thing I've change in those 7-8 years is my GPU (which was upgraded last year). Not because it broke though, it was just because I didn't have DirectX 11 and wanted to play some games that required it.
I use my computer all along the day but i shut it down at night when I go to sleep. Do people really leave them on for less hassle the next day?! (excluding those who leave it rendering, have a server of some kind on, or similar...)
Yeah I do webdev which requires me to have a lot of programs up and a ton of file locations open all the time so its a big pain reopening and remembering exactly where I was. when I'm not in the middle of a project and only have a few things open I shut her down though. just depends on your usage I guess.
Best advice is to hibernate instead of sleep if you are going to one of the 2 instead of shutdown... but I suggest that you save your work first and exit if you were typing something in a password protected document for example. It does not matter if you have a hard disk drive or not as either way it should not take too long to turn back on, it should still be faster then if you just booted up the computer instead.
Why would he though? This is a channel about IT? What's that got to do with the areas of the United States? Are you under the impression the world is something like "the USA and weird foreigners"? Because you're certainly coming off that way.
Man was that video hilarious! Such a great sense of humor, as always (I've been following you for a while). But, I don't quite know why, this is by far the funniest video I've seen from you! Like... both my cousin and my uncle, who are professionals in programming, were torn down in tears when I showed them your video! Keep rocking that semi (deeply) sarcastic sense of humor!
+Raccoon water is pretty simple now as long as your are just cooling your CPU. 1 reservoir, radiator, a pump, and some tubes. A correct fan setup is just as efficient
I'm not an expert. But, from hearing experts talk about this, I think one can fairly assume that the only thing that could potentially die from turning off your pc every day is your HDD, which is one of the cheapest components on your pc (atm, you can get 1tb hdd for 30 bucks). You should back up important data anyways. And that's only after years of use, so I think it's worth it, since pretty much pc runs really smoothly after a fresh start.
However, due to the mess of the ACPI standard, sleep and hibernation isn't always reliable. Up through the years and we still see, the motherboard manufacturers still release a lot of BIOS' with Sleep and hibernation state fixes. I used to use it a while ago, but then I stopped because of all the bugs associated with it and often having to boot up normally anyway. And as for my laptops? I kicked Microsoft off them several years ago, the sleep state things are super broken under other operating systems than Windows and a pain to deal with. So instead I power them on and off rather than relying on any of those features, although I tweak them to use as little power as possible when idle.
+CMDR Sweeper I never sleep or hibernate. If I sleep or hibernate for more than a couple hours windows won't come back. Historically speaking windows sleep modes have never worked well for me. It's either shut down completely or just leave it on. I don't think I've ever owned a computer that sleep/hibernate worked even close to 50% of the time.
dunno about sleep but hibernation brings a lot of sticky bugs.. it never worked well in windows :D even an electricity outage at the right time can cause that. one time i was booting up my system and electricity just went out for a couple of secs. then i booted up my system (again) to see that my av is crashing whenever i try to start it up. i did everything i could and it was still crashing. it finally worked after a format and reinstall of os. i dont want sticky bugs like that all over my system. so i never hibernate/sleep my system. i just leave it on if im going for a short time and shut it down when i go to sleep.
Luiz Henrique Laurini Nice surname you got. However, these sleep and hibernation issues is Microsoft's fault from the 90s with the ACPI standard and how crappy it has been since. And now they are allowed to do it again with Secure Boot and UEFI. In any case, Microsoft should never be allowed to develop standards, only implement existing ones. Their standards just cause issues further down the line and aren't that open for others to use. Vendor lockin is a really bad thing.
I have had pc since the first one came out in the 80’s. i upgraded every 5 years or so. I only turned them off when a reboot was needed. I do not remember many failures. One of my old old mechanical hard drives finally failed after at least 10 years. I usually used old hard drives as extra internal ones when I upgraded computers. You give great advice. Your videos are very detailed and as accurate as can be. Many people just like to mess with their computers. They go nuts when it takes 10 seconds longer to boot up because they boot up many times a day. I always left mine on all the time. The first pcs did not have operating systems with hibernate or sleep modes. My first one only had DOS. windows wasn’t invented yet. I agree with everything you say. I just don’t care about saving a few cents per day on electricity and prefer to only spend the time necessary on my computer. So leaving it on suits my personality and lifestyle. I think I will consider using that hybrid mode that I never understood until this video. Thanks for a great video.
+axel “bananasplit00” boström I think there is a powershell command for it, but i haven't done it myself either... It is dumb to discontinue a useful feature.
+Pedro Frias Hmmm... Does 10 continue the win 8 trend of splitting your settings up into two separate areas? Because that's annoying... I never remember about the new one, and get annoying searching got the control panel before I remember be new additional area to search.
Yoo, am watching this video on 2020 and it is still useful. Specially, I was confusing about sleep and hibernate, but now you fix everything. Thanks to you!
You should restart every week or so (depending on how often you use it) to clear out residual crap in your RAM and caches. Windows doesn't operate smoothly if you don't restart every now and again.
+Jose Rosas Hasn't happened yet. Operating systems are getting better. I also don't run a page file... I don't see the need when we can have a larger amount of RAM than hard drive capacities a decade ago.
I was a PC power user back in the day (starting 20 years ago). Been away from it for years working in a career that doesn’t require anything beyond being an ignorant end-user. I find I’m learning stuff in every video this guy does! 10 thumbs up! Thanks so much for the great videos!
I get into about this all the time. My pcs have been running non stop for the last 30 years, all of them still run. Temp changes are what kills circuitry especially if you have pc in cold area. Starting it up heats up the circuits and causes expansion and contraction when cooling off. It doesnt take a genius to see how this can affect your main board over time. Let them run and they always atay at same temp and avoid expansion /contraction.
Normally, I have nothing but praise for these videos. But Linus, you really missed it BIG TIME on this one. The problem is the glaring omission you made by ignoring Microsoft Windows instability!!! Not to mention, program instability. Since Microsoft first introduced the sleep and hibernate modes (back in the day when computers took "forever" to boot into Windows), these modes have ALWAYS been buggy. Even today, with Win 10, both sleep mode and hibernate mode are still not 100% reliable and the longer time you go between shut downs, the worse things get. The reasons for this are varied and complicated. It relates to the quality of drivers, applications and Windows, itself. Application memory leaks can slowly eat away at Windows resources the longer they run without being shut down and restarted. Drivers that tested "okay" with Windows, suddenly exhibit problems after a Windows system update. For example, a graphics driver that tolerated sleep and hibernate before the Windows update, may crash when the computer wakes from sleep or hibernate after the Windows update. Win 10 has been especially bad in this regard and appears to be a step backward regarding sleep and hibernate mode stability. And there are some applications that have never worked well with sleep mode and hibernate mode (such as CAD, 3D render, and media creation programs). So, the decision to use sleep mode and hibernate mode depends, in large part, on what you are doing with your computer and how stable your system is when waking from these modes. For many engineers, 3D modelers and media creators, both modes are best disabled. I fall into this category. And, since my notebook has only solid state internal storage (four M.2 SSDs and one 2.5-inch SSD), the boot time is so fast that there's very little disadvantage to shutting down each time I close the lid. And for readers who are unaware, you can configure your power button and lid closure to do what you want -- including having them perform a shut down instead of invoking sleep or hibernate mode.
+ Tom Klippy There is no risk of damaging the PC right away (it won't blow up suddenly). But it will eventually affect your PC components over time and they will age way quicker (so their life spawn will be reduced overall). I never turned off my PC in almost 4 years (only restarted for updates), and I never had any issues with any of its piece components ever. And I'm a hardcore gamer. All you need to do is cool down your PC correctly; as long as it's not burning all day long, you should be just fine with never turning it down. And I would stress that optimal airflow is better than water cooling (except for the motherboard maybe, for which I would buy a Corsair water cooler instead of taking the risk of building a faulty one). If you know how to place your fans correctly (and if you know how to choose them wisely), you won't ever overheat your graphic card. Or any other component. There are plenty of tutorials online about this topic; look it up and enjoy your everlasting machine. :)
When it comes to electronic components that generate a lot of heat (like computers), the heating and cooling cycles that occur with power on and power off does cause expansion and contraction of those components and of connecting wire conductors. Excessive cycling of power, and the effects upon conductors, will cause metal fatigue due to expansion (when hot) and contraction (when cool). For this reason, a constant surface temperature is ideal and will increase the life of electronic components. I never power off my desktop or laptop (unless I have to pack it up for travel), and I have never had either one crap out on me.
It's also harder on moving parts to spin up and stop. My PC has been running for 6 years straight with 5 mechanical drives, and other than Winblows taking a dump every couple years, nothing else has come close to failing.
except for necessary update i'ts really easier to access file from distance, mine is always open, since .... always... I cant remember ... same for the computer before and they last a god 5-6 yr ... and they were not broken they were just outdated. As an ex welder I approve 100% what you say about metal fatigue.
I ran my i7 920 build almost constantly from 2009 to 2018, the only real exceptions being vacations and power outages. I did do a CPU cooler swap once and that was it. Mechanical drives had no issues until 2018 when I had a HDD failure on one of the drives, and that's when I turned it off for an extended period for the first time since it was built. I've recently rebuilt the machine and it's back up and running.
I remember choosing to hibernate my pc, luckily nothing got wrong though it may fail. Better not hibernate if you were to plug the electricity off or else it would stop working among bsod. I have already tested it many times on my pc but if you were to choose sleep, then no worries at all.
Queen Elizabeth II 1. My computer is at the other end of my bedroom, which insures that I get out of bed just to shut the alarm off, instead of hitting the snooze button. 2. I don't have a phone. 3. Already having a computer, downloading a free alarm clock program is far cheaper than buying a phone. 4. Already having a computer, playing music on my computer is cheaper than getting an ipod, or mp3, or phone, just to play my music.
I sleep all the time and restart it once a week or so, I don't see why anyone would bother with hibernate unless they have a laptop. Sleep draws almost no power and resumes faster even with an SSD.
Thats where you are terribly wrong. Sleep depends on what you had open before sleeping. If i left Source Filmmaker on in the background and then sleep , my laptop auto starts its 3 fans to cool my gpu and ram. While hibernate just saves the ram state to hdd or ssd and shuts down which draws normal standby power like its shut down
+Deta335 I put my computer to sleep once when I was playing witcher 3 (put it on pause before sleeping) on my SLI rig with both my CPU and GPUs overclocked to the absolute max. Also running MSI afterburner monitor in the background and 60 fps limiter using rivatuner statistic server. went to sleep, after 10 hours I wake it and continue playing for another 5 hours with no problems. I guess my rig is magical or something. Did I mention my ram has lifetime warranty? Also I used to own Iphone 5s and had the phone for 2 years and almost never turned it off. Ran fine till I switched to Nexus 6p. Ram didnt burst into flames.
my work PC has been on for 64 days, an i3 with IGPU on windows 7. No issues. Never had issues with it, it has been on over 99.999% of it's 3 year life.
Well, not really. A Intel Xeon is designed to be on all the time, due to it being a processor for work, or data servers. My Xeon has never died on me so... Yea, it's been on for a long time.
RainbowMiner2004 open task manager, go to performance, and look at the bottom right where it says up time. It will tell you exactly how long it's been on.
why one minute? what if ur playing a game or watching a vid and u want to get some food or drinks u really want to come back and have to turn on ur monitor again. just put it to 5-10 mins and ull be fine either that or just turn off your monitor when u go to bed like i do.
I just hear "why leave it overnight doing nothing" and it's because I don't have a fast connection so I leave it overnight to download large games. I would love it if companies would implement a "rest mode" like the one in the PS4 where it sleeps, but it keeps downloading stuff... I just wonder why this feature isn't on PCs...

Turn it on at: control panel > hardware and sound > power options > system settings. Hit the Change settings that are currently unavailable. That will allow access from the power button menu.

That's why the most common fix for an issue with your phone is to turn it off, cause no one really does it.
you forgot a point.
Dust build up. Obviously having your pc on 24/7 will make the dust build up very fast compared to turning it of(or sleep etc.)
+Robert Rismyhr If you're not really using the PC and have all the power saving options well configured it really can go on with ALL fans off. No dust build at all with the fans stopped. Well, maybe on the top of the case but you know what i mean :|
+Gabriel Knight No fans on means no cooling, on a computer that is on. This sounds like a terrible idea.
pyre78 Passive cooling via the heatsinks with the fans off can be enough in idle.
+Robert Rismyhr i clenned up every 5 month, with no good case so its ok no hight temperatures for me
For the past 4 years I only put my laptop to sleep.

For some reason My laptop takes two restarts for that to happen.
What do you mean flushed?
I have an ssd and only 8gb ram and waking up from hibernation takes way longer than booting normally. The ssd was more expensive than the entire pc.
Sata3, 500Mb/s sequential read.
There isn't a bottleneck. The OS probably doesn't need to read 8gb from the ssd to boot.
Enrico Dias I have an ssd and only 8gb of ram don't have this issue. That's strange
prettylolitadoll my computer boots in 2 or 3 seconds (from bios to login screen).
Upgrade to ssd
Depends on how long I'm transporting it. 15 minutes? Sleep. 2 hours? Hibernate. I rarely turn my machine off. I usually use hibernate so that my files are already up and ready to go when I'm ready to go back to work.

Also has to start up Spotify and RealTemp. Also has to enter your windows user password if you use one.

Why you have 20 internet tabs open? Why dont you just save them in your browser? Also why you have user pasword, if you use hibernation (if that requares a password to open pc back from it)?
20 seconds to reload 20 pages?what do you have as a pc? potato?
Morgrim if you really open 20 tabs everytime, you should do a batch to automatically open them in one click
Well, my ssd damage 🙁
I always shut down, saves power, reduces dust buildup and allows your system to unload random crap that builds up in the memory, so next time you turn your computer on its fresh and ready to go.
I don't see how letting the dust settle would reduce dust buildup? As long as you have good filters and airflow leaving it on would be better?
Fans push more air (and more dust with it) throughout your components.

Is that a real fact?
Well... we're waiting
maybe if the pc was idle yeah, it doesn't draw a whole heap of power while it's idle so I could believe it. I always keep my PC on though so I started mining crypto while I sleep so earn a very small amount of extra cash on the side lol
@BAT EATER I'm not paying 100% of the power bill as I have 3 roommates, so yes I am making a profit as they are technically paying for my power use ;)
Well, turning it off saves power... right?
Yeah I turn mine off to save power. Especially when I go to sleep.
+KingShoter007 so does sleep
Sleep doesnt do it as efficiently as hibernating
Yes it does.
I haven't shut down my pc for 3 years. I got it 3 years ago.
No bath time for them? =(
Wired Beats you idiot
If this is true, you must have a mac computer. Windows crashes after a few days
Windows crashed after few days? Funny, I didn't have anything happen like that. I don't shut my PC off/hibernate/sleep. I only shut it down when I'm away from home more than 2 days.
Your PC probably got some issue. Go have it check.
AlexSDU, yes it has an issue, windows xD
Yes i use windows as my main system, sadly all of the OS's have problems.
My PC is on all hours of the day, generally. If I'm home, I'm using it frequently. I use videos on the computer to help me fall asleep, and they're on loop while I'm sleeping. I looked up this video to see if this is bad for the computer.
Well, it's not really. Not the best thing for your system, but it's fine
They can be turned off???

I always turn mine off every night, I had a teacher that only ever put here laptop to sleep it got sooooooooooooo slow because of memory leaks that she was gonna buy a new one I restarted it for her and she was amazed at how fast it was (also it was a macbook pro)
+Marlin Robertson I agree
oh god dont get me started with mem leaks Dx
GamingSoup what is memory leaks and how exactly does it happen
+michael mckinlay Programs use RAM space to store temporary data. A good programmer will remove his data and free up the space the instance the temporary data isn't useful anymore. Memory leaks occur when a programmer fails to free up and "release" the space.
+michael mckinlay I think its when a file will not get removed from the ram after its been used, it keeps taking up space until you're left with no ram and pc slows down. Don't quote me on this though.
my pc has been fully powered on for 20 years, and no problems.....yet.
You really never turned it off ?

You may have it powered on for 20 years but you haven't been able to do any work on it for the last 15 years.

You should shut it off every time after you have used it as it helps the device to cool right down and have a rest too
My PC is 7-8 years old and it's been shut down every night for all of those years. Every component still works great, and the only thing I've change in those 7-8 years is my GPU (which was upgraded last year). Not because it broke though, it was just because I didn't have DirectX 11 and wanted to play some games that required it.
I always shut down

Do people really leave them on for less hassle the next day?! (excluding those who leave it rendering, have a server of some kind on, or similar...)
yes. if you plan to do similar things the next day anyways its more convient if you don't have to reopen everything
+BDAYZ i have a media server and yes ive left it on every night for about 5 years no issues
Magicshando oh, wow!
I guess a media server won't draw THAT much power, any way.
Yeah I do webdev which requires me to have a lot of programs up and a ton of file locations open all the time so its a big pain reopening and remembering exactly where I was. when I'm not in the middle of a project and only have a few things open I shut her down though. just depends on your usage I guess.
Casey lawton hum... fair enough. thanks for sharing
I'm going to be a bit rebellious... I only lock my computer.

Luiz Henrique Laurini
Nice surname you got.
+supernova743 Sleep often has problems but I do not see how hibernate could have problems. It is just basic reading and writing stuff to disk.
Me too, I never turn them, and my pc parts last quite a long time, I usually need to upgrade them to the newer specs by then
Sleep, sleep mode always, mainly because I haven't been bothered to find the hibernation option in Win10 yet

You should restart every week or so (depending on how often you use it) to clear out residual crap in your RAM and caches.
Windows doesn't operate smoothly if you don't restart every now and again.
I restart mine for the rare occasion that a program or updates need to reboot. Other than that it stays on 24/7.
I just lock it when I am physically away from my home.
Mine stays on 24/7 unless my dad turns it off
Be wary of memory leaks. Leaving it on for extended period of times will make it terribly slow due to leaks.
+Jose Rosas Hasn't happened yet. Operating systems are getting better. I also don't run a page file... I don't see the need when we can have a larger amount of RAM than hard drive capacities a decade ago.

If I let my PC in sleep mode it works? Or just let on always?

Drunk Linus is best linus
Alex Same for me. 3,5 years now, never had any issues.
so there isnt any risk of damaging new components if you shut down at night and start up every morning?
... i have Windows # 7 Pro ...and i RE-FUSE-"""to UPGRADE"""
why did you write a 3 paragraph essay on computer power modes
@ rpprevost this is the correct answer, and what Linus failed to address in the video.
Hmm, nice point.
Well it depends...
I use my PC as my alarm clock as well. so shutting down every night is not an option
Using your pc as an alarm clock, first time I've heard that hahahah
+toni3393 Some people use it to start playing music.. but I have no clue why anyone would do that when essentially ever phone can do the same thing.
If your motherboard supports it, you can let your PC boot at specific times
matt_9908 My motherboard does not
I sleep all the time and restart it once a week or so, I don't see why anyone would bother with hibernate unless they have a laptop.

I just leave my PC on all day and have the monitors shit off after 1 min, but when I sleep, I put it in Hibernate.
why one minute? what if ur playing a game or watching a vid and u want to get some food or drinks u really want to come back and have to turn on ur monitor again. just put it to 5-10 mins and ull be fine either that or just turn off your monitor when u go to bed like i do.
blake whitlow No like I mean they go to low power mode, when I shake the mouse they pop back on.
MuddyBob 650 yea ik but why do that in the first place why not have your monitor on for like 5-10 mins before going into low power mode?
blake whitlow It's more convenient to have it like this. Only takes .1 second to turn back on...
blake whitlow it's not your PC so why do you care?
I just hear "why leave it overnight doing nothing" and it's because I don't have a fast connection so I leave it overnight to download large games. I would love it if companies would implement a "rest mode" like the one in the PS4 where it sleeps, but it keeps downloading stuff... I just wonder why this feature isn't on PCs...
