When Cheddar (Evan Jones) tries to help B-Rabbit (Eminem) win a fight by pulling a gun, he accidentally shoots himself in the leg.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Controversial rap star Eminem makes his acting debut in this hard-edged urban drama, inspired in part by incidents from the musician's own life. Jimmy Smith (Eminem), known to his friends as Rabbit, is a young man trying to make his way out of the burned-out shell of inner-city Detroit. Rabbit's entire life has been a hard climb, and it certainly hasn't gotten any easier lately; Rabbit has just been dumped by his girlfriend, forcing him to move back in with his emotionally unstable mother, Stephanie (Kim Basinger), and he's getting along especially poorly with Stephanie's new boyfriend. Rabbit has a factory job that's tough, demeaning, and doesn't pay especially well, and he's convinced his skills as a rapper are his only real hope at a better life. Rabbit makes music with a crew of DJ's and MC's who call themselves Three One Third, among them his close friend Future (Mekhi Phifer), but his status as a white kid making music in a predominantly African-American community and culture is extremely intimidating, and after Rabbit freezes up in the midst of an MC battle, he's convinced he's missed his chance and that he's doomed to lead a marginal life as a factory rat for the rest of his days. With the help of his friends, and his new girlfriend Alex (Brittany Murphy), Rabbit struggles to work up the courage and the confidence to take one more shot at making his dream a reality. 8 Mile was shot on location in Detroit; the name refers to 8 Mile Road, a thoroughfare along the city's perimeter which effectively separates the middle-class suburban neighborhoods from the lower-class inner-city.

That's the tragic part. Cheddar probably didn't want to fight, he wanted to *end* the fight with the most powerful thing they all knew-a gun. He was fully confident the gun would solve his friends' problems and support Em. When they showed him a gun wouldn't fix anything and instead lead to pain and death, he put it away only to accidentally shoot himself. 😭

Eminem is a great actor...if only he continued to act and rap as well
I definitely think Em did a great job here. I like his restrained, realistic and calm acting rather than over the top acting(most non actors and even many professional actors would have tried to do in his place). However his reactions to hits are kinda botched here, there is literally no expression to when getting beat up. But no doubt overall still a fantastic acting debut for a rapper.

Cheddar Bob was braindead from life of alcohol and drug abuse but undoubtedly loyal and funny. Cheddar Bob obviously couldn't actually fight himself hence why Cheddar snuck his mother's gun and brought it out in the group vs group brawl and because Papa Doc was always armed pulling his Beretta out of secret cowardice/fear of any real/fair scrap unless he had back up and protection like here, unless his crew outnumbered the enemy team or he and his crew jumped somebody. Cheddar would have lost a fair fight against Lotto, Lyckety Splyt or the rest but would have knocked out Clarence/Papa Doc or Wink in a straight up one on one fist fight at least.

Best bit of writing in the movie. Just cause they wanna fight doesn't mean anyone wants to risk someone getting killed in broad daylight. Gives a bit of nuance to this beef and it feels authentic. Perhaps in a movie with no input from people who actually lived that life they would have just started shooting but this is grounded and tries not to go over the top.
