As a kiwi, watching Danie tear apart the All Blacks in 81 everyone in New Zealand knew we were witnessing greatness. Simple the best I've seen
Wow..Sir I have to give it to you..81..I was 2 years old...amazing how trully classic games are remembered..same with special players..Hope you are doing well..still celebrating our 4 WC..respect and love from the Southern tip of Africa..
@sakabula2357 danie was the best player ever to play rugby ...been watching rugby since 1979 .....he played alongside the first black springbok. Errol Tobias...they were a force of note together ... .
As a New Zealander and All Black supporter it pains me to say it but Danie Gerber is the greatest centre I have ever seen play. Even on our muddy waterlogged fields in 1981 Gerber was a one man wrecking machine
Knowing Danie, he will be blushing reading all the accolades bestowed upon him. Too humble a person to boast about his rugby feats.
From a Kiwi (fair to say All Blacks our most highly respected enemy, a high accolade. His ability precisely on those fields you speak of, set him apart.
Have no fear, Springbok fans are equally pained at admitting the GOAT status of some All Black players
Absolutely brilliant player certainly one of the best of all time. Such a pity he played at a time where he didn't have the chance to showcase his talents world wide.
this guy was a beast !!! pure power and speed, He would still be a awesome player now
Size, speed, step. What a brilliant combination of attributes for any era.
No greater centre then, and no greater since then or even now. Hail O'Driscoll, but the greatest of them all, you've guessed it, Danie Gerber!!
After this highlight reel it’s very hard to argue with you. Just lower body strength & center of gravity. The shoulder drops into the tackle have guys bouncing off him,
Spouting fax
Lukhanyo Am is putting in a very good resume and by the time his career is over he’ll be among the best players ever
@@sizwe7856 Quietly he is doing a lot of good things, but he is not and never will be as explosive as the maestro himself. I am a keen supporter of Lukhanyo and applaud his heroics though.
@@sizwe7856 Am is good but highly overrated
He wasn't just fast he ran HARD. A nightmare to tackle.
Nightmare to tackle, fully agree however what about vice versa?
The gold standard at 13 and I'm an ABs fan. Would walk straight into the best XV of all time.

@@johanvanniekerk5261 how about JPR Williams, Martin Johnson, Jean Pierre Rives, Gareth Edwards, Brian O’Driscoll, Richard Hill, John Dawes…………..to name just a few, the list is long. I appreciate how good Danie Gerber could have been if he’d had a full international career, but only 13 of his 24 caps were against tier 1 nations/ full internationals. As nicely nostalgic as it is I think it does a disservice to put him in ahead of other great centres, based on very limited international evidence. It’s a bit like claiming a fast bowler is the greatest of all time because he has the best average, but not taking into account that he only played a few test makes compared with other bowlers.
@@rtl6576 Most of the players you mentioned here played in the 74 Lions team. Some legends and experts rate that team as the best 15 ever.I personally think they have a good argument. My best 15 is however the generation after this.Simly because I was born in 72 and can only judge from my era.
A steam Train with side steps and great hands and kicking skills.... Just wish we had seen him playing more in the UK.
It's easy to be nostalgic and let it dictate ones praises but DG was one of the deadliest centres ever to grace the midfield. Silky running, deft decision making and speed and power to boot!
Nog steeds my gunsteling speler van alle tye. The best in his position ever! What a delight that never really got his dues on the world stage.
Ek rank hom ver bo Naas Botha, n yster. My tipe rugby
And what a humble giant. I had the privilege of meeting up with him recently. Always time to have a chat. When singing his praises, he shies away from the spotlight. Ask Michael du Plessis who, at schools level played against him, what a formidable player and gentleman Danie Gerber is.
What a legend, I used to watch him play for Club Despatch back in South Africa. AWESOME player.
One of the best centers of all time. Pure genius and poetry in motion.
New Zealand and the rest were lucky they never had to face the Boks during the world cups that South Africa were not allowed to play in, in the 1980’s.
“Doring van Dispatch” what a legend, had the privilege of meeting him and having a few cold ones at the Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth, true gentleman!!!
Hectic bro. That's sick. Recently?
@@crazyanimal1997 , no was about 5years ago, legends live forever!!
A legend of the game, his speed would probably surprise modern day players !
The original Blitz Bok. This legend was a flyer. One of those players that was ahead of him time, who would've been outstanding in this era. No hesitation in calling Danie Gerber as one of the greatest rugby players of all time.
I feel like he set the blueprint for jaque fourie
100%.
What a wonderful player, speed, power, agility and a man who knew his role. (All Black supper:)
One of the few classic players that would still be great in modern rugby. Can't think of any other player of his size and speed with that amazing sidestep
I will always remember the rebel tour in 1986 . SA vs All blacks . SA won 3-1 with Danie Gerber the top try scorer. I was in primary school at that time .
Yeah, the NZ cavaliers. I was also in primary school. I had the Huis Genoot middle pages, with a team photo of both teams, on my way wardrobe doors. I was fascinated with Naas Botha and Grant Fox. As an 8 year old, I wondered if Grant was also baas like Oom Naas. Those were the days, though. The world was still a big place then.
Danie Gerber would have been a legend in any era. He would still be a menace to any opposition today with that sort of pace. Danie, Naas Botha, Uli Schmidt (to name a few) inspired a lot of kids back in those days and would have been serious contenders at the '87 world cup. Who watched Zandberg Jansen late at night to hear his verdict on the game? I'm getting nostalgic here
Always knew he was great, but boy oh boy. Didnt know he was that pure blooded. Wish we could see Mannetjies Roux, I have been told he was just as green blooded.
I met him in Port Elizabeth and besides being brilliant he is also a very humble person. The best we will ever have.
No attitude after those hard tackles in the goal area
I didn't know about him! Now I do!!
One of the best centres ever imo 🔥🔥🔥
Guys all I can say is this man was pure class.ansolutely phenomenal.
Tim Horan and Danie Gerber the dream centre partnership, two bulls in the middle of the field, greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪.
Watching this again - such a shame that S.Africa was banned from the 1987 world cup. They were at their peak and packed with legends! I would have loved to have seen him in a RWC.
The best centre to come out of SA . In fact I humbly suggest Gerber was one of the greatest centers in the World
I'm a Brit and I have been watching Rugby for 50 years and I have seen some wonderful centre three-quarters but none the equal of this man , he is the greatest Centre I have ever seen, his pick up speed and acceleration were staggering to see , if it hadn't been for the abhorrent Apartheid regime there really wouldn't be any argument on who was the greatest. Ps The same applies to the cricket when discussing who was the greatest opening batsman of the last 50 years, it was Barry Richards yet many young sports fans are blissfully unaware of how good these guys were .
I feel like Jacque Fourie studied him a lot. If you'll switch off the the commentary and watch Danie run, I promise you will think that he is Jacque Fourie. Remember Foure's tru in that BIL tour? That what Danie eat for breakfast, it was his bread and butter
When eloquence and brute strength came together in perfect harmony.
As a NZer in my early 40s, I never had the luxury to see the springbok play in my early childhood. This guy's speed, power and agility is beyond his time. He's devastating!
A big man with pace - and never a hair out of place ...
So old but i have never seen so much highlights in a video from way back
EXCELENT......MY GREETINGS.....I LOVER RUGBY.....😎🤙....🏉🏉🏉🏉
Faster than most wingers in the world; Lomu-type thighs but with a low center of gravity; could read the game/gaps; knew the way to the line; had great hands; had great vision; could pass well/far off both hands; could side-step, swerve, or dummy; always in support; great engine; multi-talented and one of the greatest examples of power x speed.
See the way that an international flanker, John Jeffries was just trampled!
I'd pick him for the SA side, just him. He doesn't need the other 14.
I rated Frank Bunce as the best but I see I was wrong!!
What a jewel in world rugby!!
Definitely the best of the best.
Die doring van Despatch!(Thorn of Despatch). The same town a recently banned director of SA rugby also hails from
The best there was 🐐
His change of pace, lines of running, support play, balance and over-all rugby intelligence, just get him the nod ahead of Brian O'Driscoll.
Great to see Errol Tobias making some crucial passes.
The South African Tim Horan. Sucha a shame that politics prevented him from truly showing the world what he could do.
Wrong. He's Danie. Tim was amazing. But don't ever compare the best 13 to any player. And I mean that in the nicest way 🙂
Beste ooit 👌
Deserves to be the Centre in the World Rugby team of all time!!!!!!!!
There was a time when opposition defenses had to deal with this guy in the midfield, and Ray Mordt outside him on the wing. What a nightmare.
Best centre ever!
What a beast!
Brilliant centre three quarter. Thanks for the upload.
Great 13 player
Ahhh , the old days when rugby was still beautiful!
This guy moves like Christian Cullen but with more power, awesome.
Thanks for this compilation. What took you so long?
Dit was mos nou lekker om te kyk!!
Also Danie is that Guy he's
HIM
So true!!
Best centre of all time
he had it all, strength like a forward, speed like a wing, side step, kicking
This guy would have made Campo look small he was an animal. He should of been the greatest bok that ever was.
I wonder if Danie ever climbs on to YOU TUBE and reads all these comments. He deserves to be proud but from what I've heard , he is very humble and not one to self opinion. hey it would be something to be in the same room as the great man...even for 5 minutes.
Powerhouse of a body very skillful at dodging tackles awesome player
DG GOAT!
Deadly player
WAT N SPELER
QUEL JOUEUR
WAT EEN SPELER
Que jugadorazo
My dad as always spoken of Danie Gerber that he ways the player in the 80's my player is Jacques Fourie in the late 2000's Same kinda game play and style its crazy
Respect to the Kiwis, between Springoks,he is sinonomine to the word Springbok.one of the greatest ever.
Best ever no 13 ever great great centre wow
Wow
Danie Gerber. Brian O'Driscoll. and Mike Gibson, are by far the best three centres I've ever seen.
I know Danie and Bod both played 13, but to my mind Danie at 12, and BOD at 13 would have been an unstoppable pairing.
Imagine Rene Ranger with more pace and better skills: Danie Gerber
He strikes me as being advanced fr his generation. Th game back then was very rudimentary and not so technical. Backline players these days are actually at this level
Up the boks
When torque and kW comes together
they speak of the attrocities of apartheid, this man was lost to world rugby because of it 😢 If you look closely, you see some very interesting things in this vid, his legs were insane!!
I've said it before. I'm a kiwi but Danie best rugby player I've ever seen and hell, he was fast. Wonder how fast he did the 100 metres. World class!
10,40
He held the high school 100m record here in Despatch for almost 20 years.
Nothing could stop him. Except apartheid. Watch videos of his rugby over and over! With his size and speed and side step, he will even make todays centres look mediocre
Tough game
Footwork, speed, power, passing. Looks like the complete package. Could he kick?
Yes, oh yes, he could kick! Did the kicking duties from time to time for Despatch High School, but that was never his style of play. Or do you say that tongue in cheek, because he never kicked the ball?
Leker Leker Leker!
Fire legs
He would have killed it in today's rugby,
1.Danie Gerber
2.Philippe Sella
3.Bruce Robertson
4.Frank Bunce
5.Brian O’Driscoll
6.Jason Little
7.Conrad Smith
8.Jaque Fourie
9.Stirling Mortlock
10.Yannick Jauzion
How on hearth did you miss Tin Horan ?
This is a list of centres (13) outside centres. Tim Horan played 12 inside centre or 2nd 5/8 as we call it in NZ
that try against Ireland at Newlands ....... is there any try ever better than that !!!!!!!
Look at a highlights package of Niel Burger. One of two unluckiest players never to have worn the coveted Green and Gold. The other one Ettienne Botha. Given, he was a winger, but he was an absolute monster! Do yourself that favour and check it out.
@@christoels8110 ...no what .... dont think he was a bok candidate . Just an ouk that got lucky breaks !!!!
@@za9393 Lucky breaks in what sense? Running over and around quality Northern Transvaal players to mention just one example, and you call it lucky breaks!? I am baffled, dumbfounded, flabbergasted, you name it, and i have got it, even the mumps.
Want hy is Danie van Despatch. Hy’s ons hero in every match
Imagine gerber and lomu next to each other...you will need 2 loose forwards in the backline all the time..lol
Said tongue in cheek, but not farfetched!!
Anyone know what his 100m time was. He was fast.
In the 80's back in South Africa I remember he ran a track at UPE( University of Port Elizabeth) and clocked in at 10.97 for the 100 m.
@@johnsmithwinkwink1704 that's probably without sprint training. Would have easily done 10.5 with dedicated training
@@iainw5081 MY BROTHER PLAYED AT DESPATCH AND I ASKED DANIE WHAT HIS TIME WAS AND HE SAID 10.40
As good a centre as there's ever been - from one who's no great fan of South African rugby.
I would rate him better than Brian o Driscoll as he was so much stronger. Same skill set, but faster
Warm mes deur botter
🤣👍
10.7 100 meter time while he was at Parachute Battalion 1978 I think Danie was H Q company because of sport and Lieb Liebenberg was his centre partner Lieb belonged to the Motar Platoon, just for interest sake
Hot knife thru butter
Couteau brûlant à travers le beurre
The best there was 🐐
God bless the Boers, absolutely magnificent people. They are the greatest of all the White tribes, 👍💪💪🔨🪓🌲🇮🇪🇮🇪
Hare missed the tackle by 2 meters.
Me when my mom watches the game
Conrad was better by moons
Phillepe Sella was the best centre
You're entitled to your opinion, and I respect it.
Nah!
They played against each other in a rest of the World match and by most accounts Gerber made Sella look average
Gerber or Sella for all time greatest 13? Or Nonu?
