Thank you for a wonderful series, its with great sadness I watch these videos and see how great the Springboks were, living in New Zealand these days I am constantly bombarded by how great the AB's are and not to take anything away from them but things they are being hailed for these days are actually the way the Boks played 30 and 40 years ago. AB rugby of this vintage is actually Springbok rugby from a bygone era.

    • @RealRugby

MrSweetaz I couldn't agree with you more. It's a falacy that the Boks of the amateur years played boring 10 man rugby. It's simply not true. Springbok sides were known for scoring tries and having potent backs that could run from anywhere. One can only hope that we can somehow get back to the level we belong. Let's hope...

The Easter Club rugby championship in Durban brought out the best in Danie Gerber in my humble opinion as it did in so many top players. Joh, this is a hard one. From what I heard on the radio during the 1960s, John Gainsford and Mannetjies Roux were awesome. What I saw with my own eyes from the stands during the 1970s was the magic between Peter Whipp and Johan Oosthuizen. During the 1980, there were incredibly good centre pairings, such as Michael du Plessis and Faffa Knoetze. Ultimately, for me, the greatest centre ever was Danie Gerber. For me, he was the player of the 20th century. (Jammer, Oom Frik, na al die dekades bly dit moeilik vir 'n WP onderstener om te sluk😉)

I realise that i am biased, but John Gainsford played for 7 years, was never ommited from a springbok team. he held the record for most tries. most tries against all blacks, most tests. the allblacks published a team they would least like to face. only 3 centres were featured. one was john gainsford. in 1963, he was regarded the best center on the planet. no south african center has never missed a game in 7 years of playing, sure its different today. i buy that, but ask the centers featured. i am quite sure they wouldnt put my old man at number 7. biased, yes. would it matter to my dad that he was at number 7. no.

+kirk gainsford Hi Kirk, you are allowed to be biased! Like I said in the other comment, it's so hard to compare players from different eras, and perhaps its not fair. Do we think Michael Du Plessis was better than your dad? No, but we left it to the public to vote (which we have now stopped). I'm too young to have ever seen your dad play, but my old man couldn't stop raving about him. In our opinion, Danie Gerber, Mannetjies Roux and John Gainsford were the greatest Bok centres ever. @MrT67 2 года назад

Cheslin Kolbe isn't even close to Gerber. In fact, I'd go as far to say Kolbe is well overated. When Richie Mounga can catch a guy that has stepped another player, has Mounga at a disadvantage position wise as a result, is on the outside of Mounga; yet Mounga can close him down and catch him with relative ease......
And that commonly occurs with Kolbe. Lots of stepping and running sideways, but not really getting anywhere.
