That was really the Croatian defense's fault for not dropping back more and cutting off the angles. In the last minute of stoppage, with a one-goal lead, there's no excuse for that. Great shot, though.
Modric knew that the last play had that "energy" that may bring a goal, that is why he was so nervous. To be honest, if there is ever a time to do a foul, even if it means a red card, THAT was the moment. You do not let the guy keep running. You put your leg in between his, even if that means breaking your leg and getting a straight red. It is better to not play the next game than to not play at all. That is what is called a "tactical foul".
Calafiori’s run was so Quality… Great one-two under pressure and then a hard charging run through the midfield with the perfect layoff right as the challenge comes in… Not to mention the run and cross he played earlier in the game that should’ve been headed home. He’s literally a midfielder playing defender!!! He will almost certainly become one the best defenders in Europe if he keeps his head on straight.
At least it was a beautiful goal, which made Italy qualifying a little more deserving. They are not a great team, but they did not deserve to lose. It was a pretty even game after all.
