    In this video, I'll take a detailed look at the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, a longtime gatekeeper at the Crown's entry-level position. Quite frankly, this is maybe the best option when it comes to a more attainable watch from one of the most important luxury brands in the world, but that's where the conversation gets interesting...

    I worked for Rolex from 2005-2010, and I find it very hard to believe they "can't" produce enough to meet demand. Even 15 years ago Rolex was very concerned about avoiding the kind of market dilution problems that plauged Omega in the late 60's and early 70's. When it's something every middle class family has in a dresser somewhere it stops becoming an aspirational item. I think they found a convenient excuse to curtail supply without enraging their dealer network who were extremely hostile to this sort of suggestion years before.

    • @AcmeRocket
      @AcmeRocket 2 года назад +31

      They make plenty. I can buy any Rolex I want if I was willing to pay the markup. The problem is they end up in with resellers. If they found a way, or if they wanted to prevent this, all of the BS would be over.

    • @RanenPo
      @RanenPo 2 года назад +17

      You say this, but just about every family has an older Rolex Datejust purchased in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s, perhaps worn daily or perhaps stashed somewhere. I wouldn't say that's stopped Rolex from being an aspirational item.

      @UnseenHero 2 года назад +1

      @@nkoonkukoo personally I don't know anyone on either side of my family who would never have one. I don't even think it's a financial thing, because if you make it a financial priority in life maybe they could have gotten it, they just saw no point in it. Not everyone see's the point in paying that kind of money for a watch, even in the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s. It was always the cheapest way to tell time on my wrist somewhat accurately.
      EDIT: This is not to add to the discussion on wether it is an aspirionational item or not, just wanted to add my two cents to the argument that not every family has a rolex.

    I have a 1972 Oyster perpetual which cost 605 Swiss Francs at the time (around CS150). I last serviced it 12 years ago and it's still pretty accurate; it looses about 4 seconds/day which I think it's still within the Rolex's spec's.

I am not a wealthy person by any means, but I have a history with the store. This watch is beautiful. I even questioned if it was a better all around watch than the DJ 41mm. If you can get it at retail price, it is a bargain. It will last forever....your kid and grand kid will wear it, and if you don't like it, put it for sale and even make some money...what is not to like about that? 🤷‍♂️.

    That said, I can’t ever imagine paying what some are to get the current ones.

    One note; I’m a die hard watch guy and a fine jewelry and watch salesman, and one amazing thing about Rolex watches is that all their indices, hands, and applied Rolex coronet are made from precious metal! 18kt YG/RG/WG, or Platinum. Completely unnecessary, but completely badass and so luxurious given the price point. Always a good selling point for me!

The Rolex situation has frustrated many watch lovers and enthusiasts, unless someone really wants a certain model in Stainless steel and go to the secondary market to get much over the retail price, it is better just put the purchasing action of Rolex aside and see how it goes.

    I was dead set on purchasing an OP as a 40th birthday present to myself. I have a number of watches and have never really been drawn to Rolex before, but the new OP41 appealed to me with its simplicity and a lack of the blingy showiness I often associate with Rolex. I thought it would make an excellent every-day wear watch. But the cultish requirements required for the “privilege” of purchasing a entry-level brand piece are inexcusable and drove me away.
    No, I don’t think you should have to present gifts to an AD, or beg to be put on a list, or buy a bunch of other watches from the AD in order to buy your way into the brand. So I didn’t. And I expect I’m not the only one. I would bet good money that Rolex will have a real Harley-style brand issue in ten years, where their only customers are their existing customers - a slowly shrinking market dynamic made from an inability to bring new customers into the fold.
    On the other hand, I’m really loving my Oris and Omega, and will likely add a few more of both brands to my collection over the coming years.

    The OP is a quintessential Rolex that holds to the key principles of the brand. Especially with the new movement that provides greater accuracy, a longer reserve and greater service interval while keeping fantastic looks and quality at the forefront the model, especially in blue, is a Rolex to be owned and worn. Unfortunately, as my AD indicated, the new colors and no-date sub have caused Rolex to prioritize the scarce movements away from the base colors of the OP, which is a shame. If I were to design this for myself I would have kept the 39mm and incorporated a smooth bezel but I would be satisfied with the 36OP in blue if it were to become available. The Tissot ticks most of the boxes however don’t see it being the same heirloom piece nor something that will appreciate in value.

    The thing is: I get the exclusivity is seen as an attribute by watchmakers like Rolex but it came to a point to where, it seems like people who can get them for retail want them for their resell value and most of the real watch enthusiasts are left without even a chance to get their hands on them. At a current Chrono24 range of $10,000 - $14,000 USD for this dark blue dial version, Rolex can keep their Oyster Perpetual - there's so many other watches of much greater quality that can be had for that or less. What Rolex are doing constraining supply to drive demand is yet another example of how they're a marketing company that prioritises profit over all else - not the type of company I personally want to promote or do business with.

    The rhodium 39 has been sitting in the box for a while now, relatively unloved compared to the old Pepsi, shinier fluted DJ41, and even an old white-dialed Explorer 2. Recently, I've taken to wearing it again and have been reminded of how much I like it, mostly for its simplicity and understated elegance. I'm really starting to favor three-handers. I got tired of setting dates and since living through two years of sweatpants and Netflix, stopped caring anyway. I'd venture to say that the OP perfectly balances its utility under a suit sleeve and with pair of jeans. It is stripped of all presumption, such as the date (got a cell phone for that), rotating numbered bezel (never use them), dual time function (don't care what time it is in Cairo). The irony is that while many buy a Rolex because it screams Rolex, the OP flies under the radar and says the person wearing it really just wanted a great watch.

I also like Patek Philippe but never planned on owning one. With modern pricing and my current income a Tissot, Hamilton, or Bulova are looking like my next watch. I own a couple of Swiss watches but it seems either a Seiko or Invicta (gasp) sub homage finds it way to my wrist. They maintain good accuracy and in the world of working class guys, they hold up and look good. Not everyone spends time looking at a watch with a loop inspecting brush strokes.

    Maybe this is an unpopular opinion in this comment section, but I for one think that the market decides a product's general value, not subjective opinions of one or many reviewers, and their specs sheet. Watches are not just its specs on paper. A certain watch and its value is also the ideas, the designs, the society's overall sentiment of it, the prestige conveyed by wearing it, the brand it carries, is all worth money to the consumers too. Not just the technical specs. Speaking of technical specs, let's not ignore their technically superior movement compared to pretty much anything else in almost all price classes (if not all) when it comes to precision and reability, which is something that is valuable too. The reability of that movement-family is pretty much unparalleled, and none other watch producer dare to claim +- 2 sec for a purely mechanical movement. It is apparently worth something to the masses. Rolex don't do haute horology however, which is what you could get for the same price as a submariner on the secondary market. So it all depends what the customer wants. But a lot of customers do want what rolex offers, and that, along with what they are willing to pay for it, is its value, whether you personally agree to it or not.

    Teddy ( love that name. My dad was Teddy) what I’d like to know is why a “shortage” is often sited for these frankly ridiculous grey market prices when there are literally hundreds if not thousands of the most coveted models for sale (@ 2x + retail) on the watch resale platforms? Also Rolex shuns this practice yet looking on say Chrono.24 today there are dozens of listings for 2021 Subs, Sub dates and all the Oyster Perpetual models unworn with box and papers and sold by a professional retailer at the same inflated price, even in Switzerland?
    Also blaming Rolex for shortage of supply is perhaps not warranted nor is it as significant as greedy speculators buying watches for profit.
    I was lucky with my Rolex fling buying a lady two tone date-just 1996 and a Sub date 2004 (wich the Rolex AD sold me at a price reduction) however I feel for people who would buy and use that watch as it was intended not some “flex” op but can’t afford it.
