I just saw Barry Manilow here in Savannah in concert and I have to say, it was one of the best concerts I’ve seen in my life. He is very congenial and had so many hits, and is is still so capable of a great performance. It was him on stage all the time and looks and sounds great at 79. It was a great experience for all that was there.
I caught him in London on the same tour. I'm glad I went to see him. He was incredible. Funny, entertaining, and I even cried when he did 'I Made it Through the Rain.' I didn't expect to be so moved by him. Brilliant performer.
I saw him live 3 times. Every show played the favorites, yet still had a surprise. Never dragging the Band out on a tired tour. Barry is a true showman!
Lol, I used to be so embarrassed for liking Barry Manilow. I finally admitted it to myself and confessed to my big-hair / new wave friends. Wow, it's been a while, what an amazing voice.
I totally get it..growing up in that era I was discovering all the rock bands of the time but there was something about Barry that I gravitated to
Thats hilarious! Its that Disco Sucks shame that was pushed on us. Slower love songs got swept into the mix. BeeGees are mainly to thank. I always loved the irony of when they didn't know it was a BGees song they loved it. Shows the strength of peer pressure no doubt. Thank God for good earbuds hu.lol

I always love to see Barry get the respect he deserves. I rarely divulge my appreciation of his talent but, there are probably half a dozen of his songs that kill me every time - for 40+ years!
I've seen him live and he's a generous performer! He makes sure everyone has a great time.
This brings back great memories! I remember being in 6th grade in the 70s and sitting in my best friend's bedroom, playing this song over and over on the record player. I always loved Barry Manilow, he's such a great singer and a true icon of the 70s.
The first time I heard Barry Manilow on the radio, (1973 I think) he sang Could It Be Magic. It blew me away! Beautiful song. I've been a Manilow fan ever since. Great analysis Fil!!
I saw him live a few years ago and he gave props to Donna Summer for turning it into a disco song, then he sang the disco version. It was brilliant.
Barry is certainly a master of building up tension throughout a song and paying it off with some sort of crescendo ending. Could it be Magic is an obvious example of that. This Ones For You, Tryin' to Get the Feeling etc..

One of the most beautiful openings to a song, instant hook. When I first heard it as a child I fantasized about my own Mandy but the bubble kind of burst when I learned who the song was really about.
Even Fil’s off the cuff singing sounded really good.

I had no idea that Mandy was a remake. Barry wrote the theme to American Bandstand too. He’s a great talent!
I knew it was his first number 1 hit but never knew it was a remake until now as well.

You would be amazed at Barry's catalogue. Besides top forty hits, he has written many of the jingles for large international chains over the years.

Thank you Fil from the bottom of my heart. Barry was one of my boyhood idols, what he could do with a piano and a song. O.M.G!! My mother heard me listening to Mandy over and over and knew what Barry meant to me, so, during the 1975 Grammys, when he played the medley: Chopin prelude/Could it be magic/Mandy, she stayed quiet as I recorded it off of the TV. I played that tape until I wore it out. Whenever I bring up Barry as an idol to my contemporaries the first thing they say is "He's gay!!" I don't care. He makes this beautiful music that speaks to me. I could sit, gap mouthed for hours as long as Barry talked about or played his music.
On a funny aside, in 1969 a teacher grumbled about how kids could recite, song and verse commercial jingles but not remember vital educational principles. Thing is, at the time, Barry wrote most of those commercial jingles. If the teacher wanted us to remember his principles, he should raise his game level to Barry's.
Have seen Barry a few times in Palm Springs at restaurants or just walking around as he has a home there
I wouldn't worry about it. Some people consider Slim Whitman as the greatest, most expressive, soulful singer, in history.(they're not wrong) No one is wrong. Who ever one listens to, the music that gives them enjoyment, takes them to that special place, doesn't matter! Like who you want to like, enjoy what you want, you're absolutely correct! Just think, if every artist sang the same type of music, sounded exactly like every other artist, what a boring, dull world, tbis would be. In high school, when Barry was just breaking big BTW, my record collection had everything from Bob Dylan, to Steppenwolf, to Mott the Hoople, to Elmore James, Muddy Waters, I even listened to my parents Johnny Cash, Hank Thompson, Merle Haggard. My friends all laughed at my collection. I could've cared less. When Mott the Hoople released Mott, I actually carried that album around with me, where ever I went. Let no one steal your joy, the music that makes you happy, is the BEST music. The music that makes me happy is the BEST music.(even the songs I've written & recorded. but a friend who I knew through Facebook was under going chemo for cancer. I jokingly wrote I'd send her a copy of my CD, that no cancer cells coukd stick around & bother her if she listened to that. Well she accepted, she'd never heard my stuff. But she actually liked the entire CD & said it made her feel good during treatments. So that alone made me happy). Like what you want, let every one else like what they want. The world would be much better IMO. When it comes to gay artists, the list is long, with several huge selling artists. Just because some one is gay or straight, that's there business. Listening to Barry, Elton John, or whoever doesn't mean a person is gay for liking them. My 1st publisher was gay, & he did Country music. (He didn t do much for my bands career, so I started publishing my own stuff). Pay no mind to what others think.

You could have had an hour long analysis of Barry and I would still be fascinated. I had 5-6 of his albums and my friends in high school made me hide them because they were embarrassed for me😲. Saw him live twice in the late 70's and early 80's and he was fantastic. He never took himself too seriously on stage. If you ever see him perform "Copacobana" on stage in the 80's you'll see what I mean. He always sung a bunch of his jingles during the show. I still have a double picture disc of greatest hits that has never been played that I would love to get autographed but I have to go to Vegas to get that done. One of my bucket list items!

Ah Mr. Manilow in perhaps his most pretty song that he ever covered. Barry was one of those guys that you either liked or hated him. I, for one, have always enjoyed his music. He has proven himself to be an extraordinary arranger, excellent pianist and fair songwriter. I am glad you have gotten to analyze him Fil. Sometimes a bit cheesy but absolutely underrated at times. Nice work as always!

Yes sorry guys, I am one of those people who hates Barry Manilow.
If I may continue to compare music to food for a moment. Songs like this are like having a bowl of vanilla ice cream and dripping a ton of syrup on it. In theory - sounds delicious, but it's trash that isn't good for you and too much makes me want to be sick.

Barry Manilow is , hands down a very good singer. His breathing technique and obviously schooled in vocal annunciation; he uses so many signature singing techniques… I’ve studied many live performances of his. Strangely, live ( at least in his earlier years ) he almost looks as though he’s in a trance when singing live. ( look at his eyes ) he has world renowned arrangers and collaborators at his beckoned call ! Some of his best songs are written by others , but he rearranges them to fit his style. One of his signature arrangements he does on almost 99 % of his songs is the dramatic 1/2 step up chorus at the end is his songs , sometimes 1/2 then another halve with a crecendo timpani and swirl of cymbals … then he doubles his vocals with a little boost of reverb! Perfect. As one of his sound engineers said in an interview… “ … he’s a genius with coming up with small ideas , then calls in collaborators / arrangers and Whalah … magic. That’s why he was so good at writing commercials. Short but powerful, hooky ditties. 👍🏼 A legend.
He certainly had a lot of hits back then, but probably not known as much is how many famous commercial jingles he wrote for corporate America. Jingles like Like a good neighbour, State Farm is there, Stuck on Band- Aid, You deserve a break today at McDonalds and Feelin Free for Pepsi were a few iconic jingles he wrote

He did not *write* all of the known ones he's associated with, some of them he just arranged and sung, some he only sung. He published an open letter about which one he really wrote some time in the late 70s, which has been linked as a reference on his Wikipedia page.
Everyone's had a Mandy in their lives. So relatable, and the music is gorgeous. No wonder it became a classic.
That's true. Most people would rather make friends with people who are not their friends than realize who their real friends are.
Seeing Barry live at the Kennedy Center in 1976, is an experience I will always remember. It was the second show of a 2 show evening that started 2 hours late due to his arriving late. He performed almost 2 hrs he said to make up for being so late. I still love listening to all of his music. ( I bet many still can sing his commercial jingles) Thank you Fil for the analysis! 🙂💖
Fil, any analysis where you sing is a good one. Barry Manilow was HUGE when I was a girl. This song, and many of his other hits, were on the radio all the time when I was growing up. I've got to admit that I can't help but sing along. I'm much more of a rocker, but I can appreciate Barry's musicianship.

Dude i love that you’re showing Barry Manilow as he’s one of my favorite artists. It also shows how diverse a musician you are by listening to other artists and genres other than rock, your vocals tho, bro you have to cover this or maybe do a medley of this and Could It Be Magic like Barry himself once did, maybe do it and put your own spin into it, you certainly got the pipes for it. What a talent; this was my first “Favorite Song”, I was around 12. I love it when you do an artist from my era. I don’t understand people being ashamed of loving his music. That is bazaar to me. Yes! That layering of vocals/instruments starting with one then adding the next and the next building to a powerful crescendo has been a proven formula for big powerful hits! I highly recommend anyone looking for that big hit study songs like Triumph's Magic Power and many others. Barry was a genius.

Barry Manilow is a very underrated composer. He was like an American Andrew Lloyd Weber of the pop industry.
Barry Manilow ..such an amazing musician who stirred the emotions with one masterpiece after another. ' Somewhere in the Night , Weekend in New England and Mandy just to name a few. Fil...nice job with the vocals. Spot on.

Barry's influence into pop culture is also largely unknown, as he wrote the Folger's Coffee jingle (the best part of waking up, is Folgers in your cup), State Farm Insurance (Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there), Band-Aid (Stuck on Band-Aid 'cause Band Aids stuck on you) and McDonalds (You deserve a break today).

My late husband would have loved your Channel... he was a musician, primarily a guitarist, and played with some of the greats in the 70s including Boz Scaggs, Edgar Winter and many others, and he used to talk to me about music the way you do! I was already a huge fan of Barry Manilow's from the very beginning and knew just about every tidbit of info you gave us, but watching you do this analysis was wonderful and also made me aware of some nuances I may have missed. One of my favourite jingles of his was "I Am Stuck on Band-Aid 'cause Band-Aid's Stuck on Me"! 💜

I really appreciate that you are reacting to so many of these old classics. I graduated from high school in the late 50’s, so I am familiar with so many of the oldies. So much unique talent during this time period.
I liked him. His mom used to hang out at a club in the West Village, my coworkers and I occasionally went there for a drink and to listen to whatever entertainment they might have. She was a character and of course very proud of Barry. Saw him live once and he put on a great show.
Love Barry👍 He truly is multi talented. Commercials, Vegas and songwriter. He puts emotion in his songs. I loved going to the skating rink and skate to the song “It’s a Miracle.” Great analysis Fil🤟

Barry Manilow was the first concert I saw when I was a kid. Amazing memories!!
Some people put Barry's music down, but you don't sell that many records unless you are really, really good and a serious musician, whatever your preferred genre. Fun fact: Barry's "favourite composer is Laura Nyro, ahead of Chopin" (source: Nyro's biography by Michele Kort). Bette Midler inducted Nyro into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2012.

I first saw Barry in Central Park when he opened for Dionne Warwick. I was blown away and couldn’t wait to see him at Carnegie Hall where he introduced Mandy. I loved him then and now.

As a teen in the 80's, hard rock and heavy metal were the only things I typically listened to. However, my parents had a great catalog of "old folks" music (Jim Croce, Neil Diamond, Bee Gees, etc.) that I only got into much later. Among them was Mr. Manilow. Great song and equally great analysis, Fil.
Got to see him in concert in 1986.. he was an AMAZING singer/songwriter.. and most of all - entertainer. He got folks up on stage from the audience.. walked through the audience singing. Just a joyful concert - and of course (at that time) everyone knew all the words.. to sing along with him! Glad I got to see him. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis.. as always!

Part of your analysis reminded that around the same time, I'd listen to Barry's compositions on vinyl and had started taking piano lessons. I saw Barry Manilow live once back in 1983 or so! One of the best concerts I've ever witnessed. I'm a child of the 60s and I've seen everybody from Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, The Four Seasons, Dave Mason, Led Zeppelin, BB King, Sonny and Cher, Freddy King, Iron Butterfly, Love, Vanilla Fudge, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, Chicago Transit Authority, Joe Cocker, Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, I could go on, saw them all, and Barry was right up there at the top as far as being entertained and just blown away by his mastery of music. I actually got a Beta copy of a live simulcast from 1982 of Barry Manilow live from Philadelphia. I still watch it now and then and it still just blows me away. I'm still surprised my Betamax Video recorder still works, I had to replace all the belts in the machine a while back. I had a t-shirt made once , still got it, "I may be old but I got to see all the cool bands". Love your channel, your a master of your craft!
Thank you for another great analysis. Just my luck this song got physically/emotionally linked to a tough time in my life & wow! wasn’t it was playing 24/7 for a long, long time. I love it but to this day my gut hears it before I do & kicks me - well, not so hard after 46 years, LOL. Music sees us through painful & joyful times. Weekend in New England probably my favorite. His concerts are fun & beautiful.

I didn't hear the Scott English version until 20 years after Manilow made it a monster. God bless English, as he's an astounding songwriter, but his vocal tone on that song doesn't do it justice; but Manilow's certainly does. Takes it into an entirely new universe.
