Barry was so active in the 70's and hard rock was very popular. Many of us hid our Barry Manilow love to avoid being uncool-lol. The young, romantic girls loved him. Mandy still punches my gut. Thanks for the respect-he is and was so talented and his music touched many hearts.
I was a kid in the 70s and I just adored Barry Manilow. I love this live version and his vocals are even more impressive in the studio version. I have told this story before but in 1978, I think it was, my sister took me to see The Fury (in Miami) and Barry was coming out of the other theater next door. People were clamoring after him and taking photos. I started to run to him to meet him and tell him that I loved him (I was just 10!) but my sister physically held me back and wouldn't allow me to. She said we shouldn't bother him. It still makes me sad, even if she was right. I am sure he had a hard time just doing normal things because people were always after him.
Barry says he never had plans to be a performer.. he wanted to be a composer and arranger, working in the background. He had to perform his songs to get them heard and wound up a reluctant star. He was very shy and uncomfortable performing in the beginning. His accomplishments are astounding… reading about his career is astonishing. Barry also did an uptempo version of this (after Take That) and still does it in his concerts. He’s in residency at the Westgate in Las Vegas, and set to break Elvis Presley’s attendance record later this year. He will be 80 years old this June and can still run circles around people half his age! There is no other entertainer like him…. ❤️❤️
I remember when he first started out. After he performed a song, there was a small interview. He would tell the story of popular add jingles he either wrote and or sang for companies that many were surprised to learn. e.g., The Band-aid song,(I am stuck on band-aid) McDonald's (you deserve a break today) State Farm (Like a good neighbor State Farm is there) to name a few. I've seen several shows where he runs them off singing and telling the stories.
Barry Manilow was Bette Midler's pianist at The Continental Baths in NYC (a gay bathhouse in the basement of The Ansonia Hotel). Through the late '60s he worked as a commercial jingle writer. He wrote "like a good neighbor" for State Farm Insurance, "I am stuck on Band-Aid, 'cause Band-Aid's stuck on me," and "You deserve a break today" for McDonald's. Thanks Marcus and Harri.
Barry also toured with Bette as her pianist, before his career took off. I think he even sang a couple of songs, if my memory serves me, I saw them in 1972.
"Ready To Take A Chance Again" - From the opening of "Foul Play" with Goldie Hawn driving south on the Pacific Coast Highway is a complete masterpiece!
The rock fans didn't want to be seen as "uncool" by admitting they liked Barry Manilow, but if you wanted to impress your girlfriend and get romantic, you pulled out those records because nobody does it better. He's a brilliant songwriter, a marvelous pianist, and his voice is as much an instrument as anything else in the songs he does. I was a fan from the first moment I heard Mandy. Gimme a break. I can love both rock music and Barry Manilow. There's no conflict. Plus... this is my favee track of his.
I took my late mother to see Barry Manilow in concert when she was around 70-years-old. Manilow hadn't lost a step. A memory i will never forget. I've liked him since "Mandy" was released in '74. Beautiful song, performance and selection, Marcus! Enjoyed your reaction, too, Harri!
Barry Manilow is very cool to listen to now. Whether you're older or younger. I think everyone will realize someday that Barry Manilow is very cool to listen to❤️
There's a guilty pleasure song by Barry Manilow titled "It's A Miracle" I'd love to hear again, Barry Manilow is definitely one of the most talented writers and singers in music history and deserves everyone's respect.
Donna Summer took this song and made it into a disco version. I have seen Barry in concert many times and he said he wasn't sure how he felt about Donna's version when it first came out, but when it hit Number 1 on the charts, he LOVED it. In his concerts he does both this version and also the disco version inspired by Donna.
Although I love this song the way it is and think it's perfect (it's my BM's favorite), I also really like Donna Dummer's version. IMHO, she is one of the greatest singers of all time.
Barry got me through my teens and I know every song he has ever recorded My first live concert was Barry. Either you liked him or you didn't and because he didn't look like the popular singers, I heard a lot of negative comments but didn't care. I am and always will be a "Fanilow"! Thanks for sharing this video.
Barry has always had my respect Harry, I love him, he is a brilliant performer and a very genuine guy. He released Mandy around 75/6 and he's had me ever since ..😊
I always liked him and had his albums. My daughter said he is the singer that you won't admit you love and listen to all his music when you are alone! His magic is in his performances, they were definitely magical. My husband even looked forward to seeing him perform live.
Love him! This is my favorite song of his. It was inspired by Frédéric Chopin's Prelude in C minor. But I still prefer the studio version. His piano... could it be magic?
I also agree. It is my favorite song of his too and I also prefer the studio version. It actually encouraged me to find a recording of the Prelude. I love that part.
You may have noticed near the end when he raised his arm to have the orchestra fade. If you watch any other concerts he does, you'll see he's always directing what he wants to happen on stage. Barry was ALWAYS in control of what was going on during a concert, the coordination, everything, he carefully planned. I'm sure he had advisors and helpers, of course, but all of it fell under his direction. He definitely deserves more respect for his musical abilities.
I can't help to think about Donna Summer and her cover, when listening to this song. Which now begs the question...why haven't you reacted to Donna Summer yet ? I think she would be a great artist for you to react to. Her and her magical voice.
During my teens in the 79s there was hardly no one else that I listened to than Barry Manilow. Maybe Elton John and Billy Joel, but Barry was always number one!!!
I'm in my mid-60s and it was hard on us Manilow fans back in the '70s when the radio was full of 'Zeppelin and other hard rock. We had to hide our listening to be considered "cool", but this song was in my rotation along with "Stairway...".
Barrys rendition is one of passion, desperation. It moves me just as much now as did the first time I heard on the radio when it was first released. I do remember watching this show when it aired.
I'll always have "Daybreak" and "Copacabana" on my playlist. You're correct about 'the Manilow stigma', Harri. I don't care what 'the cool guys' say about his music, I like Barry's music.
Got to see him in concert once in the mid-80s, and again in early 90s. He is an incredible performer, and a very lovely human being. He interacted with the crowd.. got a couple of people on stage to sing with him. He wrote some great tunes! Thank-you for a wonderful memory!!
Barry Manilow did quite a few hugely memorable commercials for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pepsi, McDonald's, and Band-Aids. They were on the album I had, lol.
Hi! @ElyseHFM He wrote jingles for those Companies and the one I remember was the McDonald's one "You deserve a break today, So get up and get away to McDonalds" !
@@xoxxobob61, I knew I saw you there recently! A few of us have been "hidden" from his channels. We have no idea why. Anyway, I put a lame video on my channel to keep in touch with people, called "Knife skills." Spread the word if you see anyone asking, lol! Take care!
Just found this and I love what you have said. I've been a fan since the early 80s. Barry is now 80 years old and still going. He has just surpassed the amount of Elvis's shows in Vegas. He is coming to the UK next year to do shows. Check out his albums Here At The Mayflower, 15 Minutes and 2.00am Paradise Cafe.
Hi Harri, Wow, what a performance! Barry is originally from my neighborhood in Brooklyn. Infact, my brother and I lived on the same actual street as him. - Brooklyn Mike
I think there were a lot of people who liked his music that just wouldn’t admit it , he had a lot of closet fans also. All Rose once said he used to listen to Manilow a lot alone in his room as a teen.
I'm a break dancer and a Soul, Funk, House, Hip Hop DJ, but I must say that Barry Manilow did some fantastic songs and this is one of the best songs ever made!
I have loved Barry Manilow from the time I first heard "Mandy". My parents bought a dog not long after and it was the reason I named her Mandy. He has so many great songs, but "Could It Be Magic" was always my favorite. This was good, but I do prefer the studio version. I would also like to note that back in the day once in a while my radio station played a version of this song in which the last note was off key. I don't remember what purpose there was for making that recording, but it used to make me laugh every time I heard it. I have tried to find it on line, but haven't been successful.
What a beast! The man NEEDS HIS ANGEL NOW!! I’m a metal lover, and I love old Sabbath, Zep, AC/DC, all that. I love it. But I love me some ANTHEMS TO LOVE AND MAGIC, TOO! Make fun of me if y’all want to! Great job, man. Loved what you said at the end. I can tell you’re on a good wavelength. Subbed.
Never mind the "Take That" cover! The late DONNA SUMMER did a disco dance cover of this back in the 70s and it tops the Take That version! Her cover version is exhilarating!
My late brother's favorite singer....he never hid his love for this great artist. My brother Rob was the so Cool! This is my favorite!! "Can't smile without you" or "Its a Miracle" was his.
I was 1 when this song came out, so obviously I wasn’t listening to it then, but my mother was a big Barry Manilow fan and we had his records at home that she would play so growing up I listened to this song a lot. I’m 53 now and till this day this is one of my all-time favorite songs. It is such a masterpiece and he is a masterpiece, and it’s one of the most beautiful love songs ever written! By the way, thank you for reacting to this particular video. A lot of people react to this song where it’s just the lyrics or just his album cover and you don’t get the full experience unless you watch him play and sing this song.

I am one of those who were guilty of hiding my admiration of Barry Manilow in favor of being “too cool for that”. Now that I am older I can be proud of another American treasure in Mr Manilow. Nice choice Marcus. Great reaction Harri🌺✌️
Thanks, Debbie. I told a rocker co-worker not long ago that I would rather see Barry Manilow in concert than Metallica, and she couldn't believe it. LOL. I saw him in concert about 10 years ago and he was fantastic!
The studio recording of the song (found on at least one or two ‘best of’ albums of his, has that incredible crescendo ‘hit’ that you’re looking for. That version IS truly magical and awesome.
I was able to see Barry in concert a few years ago. It was really good to hear all his classic songs. He has so many hits. I think I was 12 years old when Mandy became popular. I have been a fan ever since. He was writing advertisement jingles before he finally hit the radio. He is responsible for alot of those ads as well!!
Barry, along with Sir Tom Jones, were guilty pleasures in the 60's and 70's. I can see where an inventive group of musicians could change things up, because I've seen the opposite with some of todays young and up and coming future Superstars. Like Angelina Jordan did with her arrangement and performance of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' on AGT The Champions 2021-22. Also a young Kazakh singer Daneliya Tuleshova has taken Beyonce's songs and slowed them down and they are really well done. Her treatment of 'Crazy In Love' from "50 Shades of Gray" is a revelation. These two are just the top of a group of under 20 young ladies that are going to be household names in a couple of years. Back to Barry. He wrote great songs and, if you remember, great commercials. He had a decent enough voice to pull off his compositions. He is even better live. You knew Barry was Bette Midler's bandleader for years. She actually help get over his self-doubt about his singing voice.
There is a great version from about 2010 of this where Barry starts with the slow version then Gary and Robbie come in with the upbeat version and they finish together. I think it's from a Children in Need show.
My favorite Barry Manilow song- guess it was the teenage summer love I was having at the same time :) His voice sounds weak here though, there's a better version where his voice is so much stronger. Either way, I love it. Thanks so much, Harri
"I Write the Songs" is my favorite Barry tune. In 1975 & 1976, when I was in 5th & 6th grades, my friend Kim & I would sing it to the Kindergarteners during lunchtime recess. We tried other songs, but the kids always wanted that one.
Inspired. Amelody loosely borrowed from Chopin's Peelude in C Minor. I remember hearing this song for the first time walking across the quad at UNC-CH campus in Nov. 1975. And not only could it be magic, it was magic.
Those people that were critics and supposedly hip are dead wrong. And they wouldn't know beautiful music if it smacked them in their ears. This applies to most of my friends growing up.
Pam and I saw him in concert in 1975. Her mom drove us from Tampa to Lakeland and waited in her car to take us home. We were 15 and it was our first concert...I wonder where Pam is? Thanks much
Thanks for the great reaction, Harri! I finally got to see Barry Manilow in concert about 10 years ago. Fantastic time. He still sounds great and has sooo many hits.
Great reaction, Harri (Marcus?)! I've been a fan of Barry's music from way, way back. From his first hit, "Mandy" which was released in December 1974. And yeah, I suffered through the ridicule from my friends and co-workers for it. But I never gave it up. You mentioned Take That's version of the song. If you can, try to check out their version from their "Beautiful World" tour video. They've slowed it down to this tempo and the staging is absolutely marvelous. I've tried posting it on RUclips, but it always gets blocked and me a copyright strike. It's just an amazing piece of video.
Loved Barry Manilow's music back in the 70's-80's even though some people didn't consider it cool. Barry is a great singer songwriter & his music career spans nearly 7 decades. My favorite song by him is "Weekend In New England". But he had so many great songs such as "Mandy", "I Write The Songs", "Looks Like We Made It", "Can't Smile Without You", "Copacabana (At The Copa)", "Bandstand Boogie", "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again", "Ready To Take A Chance Again", "Even Now", It's A Miracle" etc.
I love how this song takes you from flirtation/seduction to the act to climax and then afterglow. It's the most accurate musical depiction of intimacy. When he's saying "Come on", and how he says it, we know exactly what that feeling is.
I have always loved this song and Barry Manilow. But mostly tonight, I love your reaction! You have such an appreciation for music and your enthusiasm is contagious... thank you for being you! God bless you.
I LOVE the Take That version! They were guests on some TV show years ago and I heard it there. Had never heard of them. Bought their LP, but it was never as good as their live version. ☹️ Great example of re-interpretation of a great song! 😻

It still annoys me that the "joke" back then was to call him "Barely Man Enough." Honestly. A beautiful singer, piano player, and song writer.
@@laurabrevitz3944 Well, who's laughing now?! Consider the source. I agree with you 100% - his legacy of hits speaks for itself.

Great pick Marcus. Harri you are so right. Manilow is brilliant! I love this song. He has so many great songs.
That group that did the fast version was covering Donna Summer version which she covered from Manillow
Oh my. I love him. Such talent. I saw him a few years ago. Such a showman.
This song...is....the magic.
The studio recording of the song (found on at least one or two ‘best of’ albums of his, has that incredible crescendo ‘hit’ that you’re looking for. That version IS truly magical and awesome.
My sister was obsessed with Barry Manilow. I saw him in concert in the mid-80s. He put on a great show.
One of my favorites by him.
What a showman, excellent.
There is a great version from about 2010 of this where Barry starts with the slow version then Gary and Robbie come in with the upbeat version and they finish together. I think it's from a Children in Need show.
Did you notice how respectful the audience was to the performance? Not a sound from them until it ended!
I especially recommend three songs by Barry Manilow: "Stay", "The Old Songs" and "Twenty Four Hours a Day".
Manilow loved the Take That version. He actually did it one time I saw him in concert.
Inspired. Amelody loosely borrowed from Chopin's Peelude in C Minor. I remember hearing this song for the first time walking across the quad at UNC-CH campus in Nov. 1975. And not only could it be magic, it was magic.
Prelude. Sorry guys and gals.
Those people that were critics and supposedly hip are dead wrong. And they wouldn't know beautiful music if it smacked them in their ears. This applies to most of my friends growing up.
Let's hear it for the Fanilows!
Extremely talented man. I love him. ❤❤❤❤
Phenominal masterpiece!
Pam and I saw him in concert in 1975. Her mom drove us from Tampa to Lakeland and waited in her car to take us home. We were 15 and it was our first concert...I wonder where Pam is?
Thanks much
Such a sexy song! The build-up! And he's so cute!
Great reaction to a great song and artist. Have seen him twice in concert. 😀😃😄😁
LOVE Barry!!
Thanks for the great reaction, Harri! I finally got to see Barry Manilow in concert about 10 years ago. Fantastic time. He still sounds great and has sooo many hits.
Weekend in New England is my fave! ❤❤
I have always loved this song!
Barry Manilow is a fantastic song writer and singer.
Barry also did a dance version of it later on, after Take That had success with that song.
Thank you for putting into words what I thought as well!
I have always loved this song and Barry Manilow. But mostly tonight, I love your reaction! You have such an appreciation for music and your enthusiasm is contagious... thank you for being you! God bless you.
For the fun of it you should listen to his VSM with all of his hit jingles... KFC, dr pepper, pepsi, McDonald's... 🎉🎉🎉
And for a completely different take on this song. Take That, fronted by Robbie Williams
I remember watching this as a pre-teen. I was going to date and kiss and marry Barry Manilow. I think I was 11. 😁❤️
listen to the perfect studio version it is a masterpiece. HarriBest glad you enjoyed it, that you picked up so fast on it.
So many good ones I love this one❤❤❤❤❤
Barry Manilow was one of my first albums. Can't remember the name of it. Best hits, maybe?
Barry Manilow, This One's For You, Tryin' To get The Feeling?
@@pncombies, I think it was Live.
@@elysehfm8797 He's quite the entertainer and showman! Now I'll be here on YT all night listening to Manilow songs. 😎
@@pncombies, ha ha! I wrote a comment about his commercials. If you don't remember them, check them out!
@@elysehfm8797 I do remember them and I had to check them out here. Very clever!
Barry still performing in Las vegas
MUCH MORE RESPECT DESERVES THIS GUY INDEED! After ~2010 his voice was deteriorated a lot, unfortunately.
Take That covered Queen of Disco, Donna Summer’s cover of it.
I LOVE the Take That version! They were guests on some TV show years ago and I heard it there. Had never heard of them. Bought their LP, but it was never as good as their live version. ☹️ Great example of re-interpretation of a great song! 😻
I hear their version on my overhead music at work all the time. It is a good cover, but I still prefer the original.
