I couldn't really argue with DKR being better on paper, and yet I have spent MAAAAANY more hours with friends in Mario Tennis or Mario Kart. DKR was a game that I feel you could best appreciate in Single Player Mode. There just wasn't the same addiction factor as with other party games on the N64, at least not in my peer group. Anybody that I showed the game to wasn't really that keen on coming back to it, whereas the same people were always up for a round of Mario Kart, Tennis, or Party. Maybe it was just a little too complex.
Big-time sleeper hit that needs a remake: Space Station Silicon Valley. I’m amazed I’ve never seen another game where you can play as every enemy you kill. What an awesome concept!
Metacritic is just a review aggregate site, there isn't much to trust or distrust. They just collate reviews from all over. There is debate about weighted reviews but yea, might as well blame all the individual reviewers who gave these games those high scores. Which, you have to keep in mind were mostly given at the time of the games' releases.
1. Legend of Zelda: OoT 2. Perfect Dark 3. Shadow Man 4. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 5. Super Smash Bros 6. F-Zero X 7. Rogue Squadron 8. Body Harvest 9. Jet Force Gemini 10. Winback
@@n64glennplant i can't speak for berserkism.... but I definitely preferred the N64 version. I enjoyed the improved visuals and entertaining janky voice acting of the PS2 version. But I had a much easier time controlling the game on the N64 than PS2. For whatever reason I was godly at headshots on the N64 version but not not the PS2.
@@n64glennplant I am not really one for remakes, HD versions or port upgrades, so some small tweaks here and there to controls and graphics didn't detract from the original appeal of the N64 version. For me, it was a game that had a lot of influence because of it's systems. Laser sight, cover system, move, cover, shoot, duck style of play was a puzzle game inside of the overall game and it was easy to really get into the zone when playing it. There are a lot of games that can go into a top 10, I felt it was owed a spot.
It's REALLY tough for me to put together my top 10 for N64. So many fun games, and there's quite a few titles I've yet to experience. Here's my list as it stands today: Ocarina of Time Goldeneye 007 Goemon's Great Adventure Banjo Kazooie Shadowman Conker's Bad Fur Day Snowboard Kids Resident Evil 2 Bomberman Hero Mario Party 2
@@n64glennplant I have not. Gonna buy a switch once it's available on that system. So excited about that release. Hoping for a limited run edition at see point, like what they did with the Turok editions!
With the N64 often I find it has to be a top 25, but if the intent is minimalism, my top 5: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ( Replayability, 3D Action Adventure RPG, Timeless Coming of Age Story) Perfect Dark (Co-Op, Counter Op, Combat Simulator) Rush 2049 (Variety, Ease of Play/ Challenging to Master, Head to Head Races) Donkey Kong 64 (Endless Adventure, Various Game Modes, Multi Play) Ogre Battle 64 (Replayabilty, Countless Hours, Tactical Strategy RPG) Honorable Mentions: Flying Dragon, Sin and Punishment, Goemon's Great Adventure, and any Mario Themed Game.. First game that came with my N64, Starfox 64.... the above would be the games I would add on. Most Mario games, often you would play at a party, and the obscure titles, I didn't even learn of until college... I think that is the charm of the N64. And really, you can't do a top 5 or a top 10, especially if you want to consider all genres.
My most played N64 games as a kid were banjo kazooie, goldeneye, mario kart, super mario 64, star fox64, majoras mask and my personal favorite ocarina of time. I'm not surprised most of them made the top 10 metacritic lists. Great video as always glenn.
Great video. My personal number 1 is Perfect Dark. I would definitely have WWF No Mercy in my Top 10. 1. Perfect Dark 2. Goldeneye 007 3. Ocarina of Time 4. Mario 64 5. WWF No Mercy 6. Banjo-Kazooie 7. Diddy Kong Racing 8. WCW/nWo Revenge 9. F-Zero X 10. Mario Party
One thing you do have to keep in mind regarding meta critic is the timing of releases… Wave Race for instance, came out in 1996 and was so revolutionary, you can understand why it had such a high rating compared to potentially better games that released 2 - 4 years later. If it came out in 1999 or 2000, it would likely have scored a little lower and not made the top 10.
I don't disagree all that much with this list. I do think its a tragedy that Mario Kart 64 is not on the list. I think that beats wave race. Then I would put Starfox 64 in place of mario tennis. I do love that Perfect Dark is getting its due recognition. I have seen too many "Top N64 games" lists in which Goldeneye is ahead of Perfect Dark or Perfect Dark is not even on the list... Perfect Dark is better than Goldeneye in every way (and Im a huge James Bond fan). If I were to let nostalgia come into play, I would have loved to see Turok or Turok 2 make this list. They were top 10 games to me.
Mario Kart 64 was good, but felt exprimental in that you can cheese an opponent in a race by using items before a ramp and add 10-20 seconds to their time. Waverace, F-Zero, Beetle Adventure Racing all felt like more polished racing games, IMO. Also I liked Diddy Kong Racing, but hated the collecting enough stuff to unlock courses.
Everytime i was watching somebody playing Ocarina of Time they were at the Water Temple and i was puzzling with them to get through. When i played Ocarina of Time YEARS later, it was the easiest one for me haha Fun Fact, i don't know why, maybe because i watched so many People playing it, but when i borrowed the Game from my Cousin, i was only going fishing for two Weeks haha...
A little unrelated but I remember back in Mexico in my grandparents home, summer and hot as hell, like heat stroke inducing heat. Having the AC all the way up while comfy AF under a big comforter and with my brother and cousin playing body harvest, Diddy Kong, RE 2 and Zelda on the n64 back in 99 or 2000. Man nothing will ever beat that feeling. I feel like things like these are what makes us keep going back to these ugly ass, but fun games. We were so happy and we didn't know it. Thank you for this channel 🙏. It triggers a lot of good memories and it's nice to hear a nice person talk about all my fav games from back then.
I believe it has to do with the timing too. Waverace was one of the first n64 games, therefore, it had a much bigger impact than it would have if it came out the same time conkers bad fur day did
@@Oleander410 It's not a best list though... It's the highest average review score list. These lists are pure math. They take the numbers from reviews and find the average. People taking these lists seriously is stupid.
Oh man that game was and is absolutely amazing. Regardless of how long ago I beat it I still remember how great it was. I would throw money at Nintendo if they remade or at least re-release it on the switch.
Thanks for coming back to RUclips, Glenn! I really have been enjoying your recent videos and the more nostalgic point of view instead of a critical review.
I remember that all expansion packs instantly sold out when Majoras Mask was released. So game was not "available" for many players, and simultaniously all focus was on PS2 release anyway. -These games come to my mind right now: The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time, Perfect Dark, F-Zero X, Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Jet Force Gemini, StarFox 64, Turok 2, Diddy Kong Racing. - But i could easily name 10-20 more N64 games that are equally just as good. That list would include fantastic titles like Mystical Ninja and Mischief Makes.
I don’t know why majoras mask under sold to OOT. Majoras mask has been my favorite game since I first finished it. It’s so beautiful and really pulled at the heart strings. The collecting of the masks too was always so fun for me! Great video dude! I’m so glad you’re back!!
Perfect Dark has been really helping me through lockdown, and I'm not even all that good at FPS games. It's just so slick while still charming, not to mention some very hilarious correct predictions of the future... though everyone having british accents in the game is still kinda goofy.😆
certainly will be Joey, just need to get around to recording etc. I expect ill be able to do it some point this year. Thanks for being a member too :) that N64 logo looks awesome right :)
My top ten: 10 Ogre Battle 64- Amazing game. Tactical RPG with tons of team customisation and deep gameplay. Can be slow but once you get over that its incredible 9. Conkers Bad Fur Day- Funniest game i’ve ever played. Nothing like it. Also has a crap ton of variety from pushing poo up a mountain to fighting Nazi Teddy bears. 8.F-Zero X- exhilarating, fast and smooth. The sense of speed and the that it gives you is incredible. 7 Diddy Kong Racing- Single player adventure mode is genius. Incredible track design. Colourful art style that has aged well and incredible music by David Wise. 6. Star Fox 64- Amazing replay ability. Third person rail shooters are incredibly underrated. The roller coaster and space battle feel just makes it so good. 5. Sin and Punishment- Another third person rail shooter and hidden gem. It’s only an hour long but there is so much packed in that one hour it has infinite replay value. 4. Super Smash Bros- There are better Smash Bros sequels with more content. But this was a blast back in the day. Still has the best sound effects. 3. Mario Kart 64- The multiplayer is still fun. The best to play with friends. 2. Goldeneye 007- So many good memories with this. 1. Perfect Dark- Holy cow this game as so much conten. Would spend all night with my brother versing bots or each other in the multiplayer.
This just reminds me how fantastic the N64 library was and how great Rare used to be. Some of these games really deserve their legendary status. Personally, I probably would have taken Goldeneye off the list and replaced it with Turok 2. Goldeneye was a brilliant game and I played it to death when it was released, but it was surpassed in every way by later FPS' on the console, particularly Perfect Dark. I also notice a disturbing lack of Diddy Kong Racing on the list. How Mario Tennis got on there but not the best Kart racing game of the era I'll never know.
My top 10 list of N64 games.. 1: Super Mario 64 2: Goldeneye 007 3: The Legend of Zelda: OOT 4: Perfect Dark 5: Starfox 64 (Lylat Wars) 6: Banjo-Kazooie 7: Diddy Kong Racing 8: Conker’s Bad Fur Day 9: Mario Kart 64 10: Jet Force Gemini I was close to placing either Donkey Kong 64, Majora’s Mask or Banjo Tooie at No. 10, but I feel they are too similar to games that are already on this list. Jet Force Gemini is very much a unique title and is criminally underrated.
100% agree that Conker deserves a higher rank than #9. You hit the nail on the head saying it was "a pure product of its time," but that is precisely why it worked so well. Side note: at university, a buddy wanted to give me a bottle of the scotch and asked what I wanted. I told him to get me Speyside, because that's what Conker drinks at the end of the game. Even in my 20s, that game stuck with me. Cheers, Glenn!
haha I rarely drink aside from easter and Christmas these days but when I do I always prefer islay scotch....maybe its my Glaswegian heritage coming out!
1. Conker's Bad Fur Day 2. Diddy Kong Racing 3. Donkey Kong 64 4. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 5. Banjo-Tooie 6. Resident Evil 2 7. Super Mario 64 8. Super Smash Bros. 9. Mario Kart 64 10. Mario Party 2 A lot of this list is nostalgia but hey it's just my opinion, the N64 will always have a special place in my childhood memories
its a great game but for me, never going to be in the top 10 best games on the console just look at some of the classics which aren't on this list but I guess a lot comes down to game genre preferences too
same here love it to bits the wave physics still stun me also the announcer music and commentary is so good definitely one of the best n64 games without doubt
As someone who places a higher than usual value on controls, physics and the way a game feels to play, Wave Race is really special to me. It's still my favorite water based racing game 25 years later.
you know its crazy, i am from this era and had an n64 but i have never played ocarina. i see it everywhere when im surfing for nostalgia so much so that the music of the game can make me cry. anyways, i had 2 sessions of n64, its release and college and the big title i didnt see on this list that i absolutely loved was mario kart 64 it was great at release and held up even more when we started playing it at school. that should stand for something. anyways enjoyed the vid
Shadowman deserves a spot on the top 10. I absolutely loved it, the music, atmosphere, story and design. It was simply a hidden masterpiece that any platformer or horror fan would love. The remaster just released so there's no excuse for people not to play it. It's a game everyone needs to play once in their life.
Great video. Really makes me think. I'd have to take some time to fill out a proper list, but one game I'd have on there for sure is 1080 Snowboarding. I feel it is perhaps the N64 game that has aged the best. It still looks great and feels as amazing to play as it did back then. I re-visit it quite often.
Today I found my OLD N64 I had as a very young kid. It was in my mom's basement. xD And I had recently bought another n64 months ago. I have been watching your channel for a while for game recommendations. If I were to talk about my fav games, I would talk about my fav games from childhood memory (& not my collection atm). Fav Childhood N64 Games: 1. Mario Party 2 2. Yoshi Story 3. Super Mario 64 (my favorite today) 4. Pokemon Stadium 4. Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry 5. Donkey Kong 64 6. F-Zero X 7. Zelda Ocarina of Time 8. Pokémon Puzzle League Donkey Kong 64 & F-Zero X are low on the list, because I would play them at the Dentist (they had an N64 setup/still do). I remember playing Mario Party 2 and liking it a lot at a friend's house. Super Mario 64 -- I would play the first two levels, but I don't remember getting far... I recently replayed and beat it as an adult. I was too dumb to beat it as a kid. I felt Super Mario 64 was very enjoyable. It's too bad I don't see too much replay value after beating it. Only once in a while. Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry was fun for a while, but I remember getting bored of it. Zelda Ocarine of Time, I never really owned a copy as a kid. I watched my cousin play the first level -- but it's low on my list because I never had personal time with the game to make it very meaningful. When I play Zelda Ocarina of Time today, it's a scary game for me! The boss battles & certain parts in the game make me feel scared even as an adult. I can't imagine how scared I would be as a kid. But I'm impressed with the boss battles in the game & how big they are. And I have yet to really delve into Majora's Mask, so who knows... You should make a 5 SCARY N64 games list! (on top of that!) I was very young when I played the n64. Single digit. Of course, other games I liked outside the system were Pikmen & Timesplitters 2 / Future Perfect, but n64 games have a very special place in my heart as childhood games.
The SNES and N64 were my entire childhood. My personal favorites were Star Fox 64, Pokémon Snap, and Diddy Kong Racing. I also think one of the most underrated N64 games was Ducks Dodgers.
OoT I suppose would be 'the best' technically on my top 10, but my absolute favourite is actually Majora's Mask, which I find terribly underrated. I find it a work of genius. I could write a book about that game.
Hey Mario Tennis is a damn good game! A little overly simplistic maybe, but very fun. My top 10 would go something like this, in no particular order: Zelda OoT, Majora's Mask, Mario 64, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox, Smash Bros, and WWF No Mercy.
The reason why "Majora's Mask" didn't sell as much as "Ocarina of Time" isn't much of a mystery: The game was released literally the same week as the PlayStation 2. The N64 as a whole was pretty much done from a sales perspective. Also, the 3 day cycle was considered as way too intimidating and stressful by many people, which didn't help.
I can tell you why I didn’t buy Majora’s Mask despite falling in love with Ocarina of Time (my first Zelda game). I rented MM from Blockbuster and found the Groundhog Day mechanic (the world resets every three days) incredibly frustrating. I was too young (9 or 10 years old) to figure out how to work around it on my own (save your money in the bank, play the Song of Time backwards to slow down time) , and I didn’t have the savvy to look for help online. So I returned it to Blockbuster and never played it again until 11 or 12 years later when I borrowed a roommate’s N64 cartridge and realized what I missed. OoT is much more forgiving to young and inexperienced gamers due to its lack of a literal ticking clock. No time pressure means you can explore freely without consequence.
I remember picking up Wave Race along with my N64 from Dixons, being so disappointed with it and returning it the next day, which I'm surprised they took back. I then had a brand new N64 with no games until Mario Kart 64 was released the following week. It was the longest week of my life.
I remember one time I took back a gamecube football game, think it was a Sega one and they accepted it. I too was surprised as they were always brats weren't they when it came to returning stuff
@@n64glennplant yeah, wouldn't happen now, but it surprised my 10 year old self at the time. And i hope you aren't talking about Sega Soccer Slam, that game should be in everyone'a collection! Haha
PAL Waverace 64 is an atrocious game. The conversion was so bad it actually broke the game - it shouldn't have been released like that. It's great when it runs at the proper speed in the US or JP versions. MK64 got butchered too to be honest but it's still playable. But I thought MK64 was such a disappointment and it's my least favourite in the series by some way.
@@davy_K Luckily I never knew of the pal/ntsc differences in speed until I was much older; so didn't feel like I was missing out. Although MK64 isn't the best game in the series, I have so many years of memories and had so much fun with it at the time.
@@JimbQ That's a great point. I didn't realise the differences myself until I got a Dreamcast and experienced 60Hz mode.... The fun and the memories matter more. :) I loved original MK so much that I was bound to be disappointed. MK64 did feel a bit slow to me though on certain tracks. But I know most people love MK64 and it may be the most fondly thought of. It has some brilliantly designed tracks. I really liked Double Dash on GC though - I'm probably in a minority on that one!!!!
Wave Race 64 absolutely deserves to be in the top 10 all time N64 games. In fact, for me it’s #1. It perfectly nailed what it set out to do, and to this day no other water racing game has ever been as good.
@@n64glennplant That’s entirely dependent on what you want in a video game. If you want a giant world to explore, no, it’s not the best. If you enjoy racing games, than it very well might be.
My personal top 10 1. Smash Bros 2. Banjo Kazooie 3. Goldeneye 4. Super Mario 64 5. Conkers Bad Fur Day 6. Ocarina of Time 7. Mario Kart 64 8. Pokemon Stadium 9. Jet Force Gemini 10. Mario Party 2
I have the exact same feeling about OOT a warmth comes over me and only with the original N64 version. I still play it when I stop by my parents around the holidays.
My personal top 10 Goldeneye 007 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Banjo-Kazooie Conkers Bad Fur Day Perfect Dark Super Mario 64 Diddy Kong Racing/Mario Kart(tie) Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask Paper Mario Turok 2: Seeds of Evil There are many more I couldn't fit on this list as well.
I think the only thing that hurt the game was basically being a "director's cut" of Castlevania 64 released way too soon after that title. Either it needed to wait or should have been the game we got in the first place.
Personal Top 10: 1. Zelda OOT 2. Banjo Kazooie 3. Mario Kart 64 4. Perfect Dark 5. Mario 64 6. Beetle Adventure Racing 7. Zelda MM 8. Quake II 9. Resident Evil 2 10. Star Wars Rogue Squadron So hard to boil it down to 10. Lot of great games that I adore just missing the cut (Goldeneye, Lylatwars, F-Zero X etc)
So many games could fit this list, such awesome titles on the N64. I personally think WaveRace 64 deserves its place, those controls were sublime. You could choose to ride the wave or cut through it, or both and those water physics in play have never been bettered. Additions... Turok 2, Star fox/ Lylat wars, Shadowman, KI Gold, SW Rogue Squadron, Beetle Adventure Racing, F Zero X, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Zelda Majora's Mask (better than oot!? 😱😁) Well that's 10 already lol it's not enough! Cos I'm weird I'll throw in Mystical Ninja starring Goemon and Mace the dark age, Forsaken and Mischief Makers aka go go troublemakers. Great video mate 👍 😎 AncientGamer 🎮
My top N64 games of all time: 10-Paper Mario 9-Resident Evil 2 8-F-Zero X 7-Star Fox 64 6-Banjo-Kazooie 5-Smash Bros 4-GoldenEye 007 3-Mario Kart 64 2- 1-Ocarina Of Time/Super Mario 64
Majoras Mask didn’t sell nearly as well as Ocarina of Time simply because it came out late in 2000 during the launch of the PS2 and the Dreamcast already being out. Just like Conkers, if it came out in 98-99, it would have sold multiple times more.
My personal experience with the N64 was that every birthday / christmas = a N64 game. When the expansion pack came out, RIP Majora's Mask, Conker and Perfect Dark. Those were pipedreams.
I'm so happy Wave Race 64 made the list, as it deserves to be on this list. It's a game that I coming back to other than Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 at that time, and I fell in love with its music too and still am in love with it to today. I'm hoping Nintendo gets their stuff together to bring N64 games back in some way in form, like either an N64 mini or on the Switch online service. I also give high nods to Banjo Kazooie and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
@@n64glennplant So do I, especially during times where I really need to unwind. Funny thing is that at one point my fiancee wanted me to sell my Pilotwings 64 game because the game didn't appeal to her based on the characters and or graphics. It was a very dumb reason. Needless to say, i still have the game to this day.😊
This is the first time i’ve ever disagreed with you. Mario Tennis awesome. What I love is that a non gamer can pick this up and play well in a relatively short period of time. It has depth too. One of the best party games ever.
@@n64glennplant By the way, I thought that video you made about your memories of gaming with your father was one of the best and most touching vids I have ever seen on RUclips. I shared it on my Facebook profile. Outstanding.
How I rank my favorite N64 titles will likely continue to change, but this is how I currently see it; 1- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3- Banjo&Tooie 4- Banjo-Kazooie 5- Super Mario 64 6- Star Fox 64 7- Diddy Kong Racing 8- F-Zero X 9- Mario Party 3 10- Mario Party 2
Big games for me as a kid were, Tony Hawks Pro Skater of course, how this didn't make Meta's list is beyond me, Jet Force Gemini, still some of most fond memories of gaming and of course, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, probably my favorite game of all at the time.
Lylat Wars is always good. The characters in Mystical Ninja have FOUR walk/run animations each !! And Castlevania 64, while having a tough camera and platforming sections, is scary:o
Wave Race 64 deserves that spot. I'd put it a lot higher, even. It aged amazingly well, in fact no water based racer has surpassed it's gameplay to date, it's sequel included.
Ahh.. the Nintendo 64. My favorite game console of all time, bursting with such a clear sense of purpose. Big games that are fun to play. I suppose it's just nostalgia talking but there is something near magical when looking back at the system. An essential mark of newness and originality that transcends this media. Video games today can easily bask in the blueprints of success that N64 left behind. But I digress. Here's my top 10... 1.) Legend of Zelda: OoT 2.) Perfect Dark 3.) Shadow Man 4.) Turok 2: Seeds of Evil 5.) WWF No Mercy 6.) Goldeneye 007 7.) F-Zero X 8.) Mario Kart 64 9.) Castlevania 10.) 1080 Snowboarding
Great video! I think my top 10 would look like: 1. Ocarina of Time 2. GoldenEye 3. Rogue Squadron 4. Ogre Battle 64 5. Mario Kart 64 6. Perfect Dark 7. F-Zero X 8. Mortal Kombat Trilogy (I regret nothing) 9. Tie- Automobili Lamborghini/World Driver Championship 10. Star fox 64 Honourable mentions go to Wave Race, Doom 64, and Shadows of the Empire
@@n64glennplant I know it’s not TECHNICALLY anywhere close, but my brother and I used to use the same car on the first track, 30 laps, and it was basically just whoever screwed up that lost lol. We did that all the time. I also just found it very fun to unlock the cars in that game. Plus the Diablo has always been my favourite car.
While the top 3 in my list are set in stone, a lot of the others can vary, but my top 10 are as follows: 1. WWF No Mercy 2. Super Smash Bros. 3. Perfect Dark 4. Quake II 5. The World is Not Enough 6. Mario Tennis 7. Gauntlet Legends 8. Goldeneye 9. Road Rash 64 10. Excitebike 64 If I had to pick a number 11, it would be The New Tetris.
IDK...but w/out thinking much... & in no particular order: Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, WWF No Mercy (& all the AKI/THQ games as honorable mentions), Mario Kart 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, NFL Blitz, Knockout Kings 2000, Banjo-Kazooie ... this will change over & over lol
1: Banjo Tooie 2: Banjo Kazooie 3: Mario Kart 64 4: Mario 64 5: Legend of Zelda Ocarina/Majora's 6: Donkey Kong 64 7: Diddy Kong Racing 8: Goldeneye/Perfect Dark 9: Conkers Bad Fur Day 10: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
I took a look at the wider Metacritic N64 list. Surprised to see SSB all the way at 40 with a 79 average. Sure, later games in the series have eclipsed it, but it seems like it should be in the top 20 at least.
My heart jumped when you put in a Harvest Moon clip at the very end. It’s amazing that one guy just looked around and went: Seriously, NOBODY has tried to make more farming village games? All right, here’s Stardew Valley… aaaand now I’m a multimillionaire.
i feel like majora's mask's problem with sales was just the timing of its release. it came out only 2 years after the previous zelda game and at that point in the n64's lifecycle there were so many other games competing with it in terms of depth and length that i just didn't have the bandwidth to put that much time and effort into yet another deep, lengthy game when i was still working on others. it looked cool and all but it was still just like "another zelda game already? ok, well, maybe i'll check it out after i finish the games i'm already working on."... and by that time the gamecube was on the horizon and i feel like myself and others sort of just forgot about the game til years later.
I would put it more down to coming out quite late in the N64's lifespan when the Dreamcast and PS2 were already out and also the marketing being a little confusing, since the game looked almost exactly like OoT. You didn't know if it was just an expansion of some sort, if this was what was originally planned as Ura Zelda, or what the hell was going on. Also I think the darker tone of the game alienated a lot of the younger audience or rather their parents which didn't deem the game as appropriate for them.
@@n64glennplant yes, and there was just so much other competition in the "long engaging game" space at the point it released, as well. i feel like if nintendo had just held off and released majora's mask on the gamecube - even if it were just a bonus "uprezed" version of the n64 version - it would have done much better. but who knows.
I love F-Zero X... the game got panned in some reviews because of the soundtrack, someone said something like "there will be no time were people will enjoy this kind of music", its just a so dumb reason, i can get the graphics being simple, but the music pumps adrenaline and works so well with the game, better than GX's music in my opinion. F-Zero X with the Expansion Pack for me would be in the top 10.
That soundtrack is so rad! Have to take a few points off for the Rainbow Road remix being cut (cartridge limitations) and for the soundtrack being too heavy on MIDI instruments overall (shoestring budget?), but I do prefer the style to GX's more techno-oriented approach.
Majora's Mask came out when public interest in the N64 was on the wane. In 1998, the N64 was competitive with the PSX, but by 2000, it had to compete with the PS2. A lot fewer people cared at that point.
I absolutely think Ocarina of Time is a revolutionary game and deserves the top spot on so many lists but given my personal tastes/nostalgia it's quite a bit lower. 1. Super Mario 64 2. Banjo Kazooie 3. Goldeneye 4. Mario Party 2/3 5. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber 6. Diddy Kong Racing 7. Goemon's Great Adventure 8. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 9. Perfect Dark 10. Snowboard Kids 2
One of the toughest top-10's of any console ever! Video games essentially peaked at this era...truly a revolutionary phase! As far as top-10's go.... 1) Super Mario (a release title that ushered in the modern era of gaming) 2) Zelda Ocarina of time (a breathtaking journey...EOD) 3) Golden Eye (the best multi-player experience of all time) 4) Mario Kart (The second best multi-player experience of all time) 6) Perfect Dark (Improved on golden eye in every single way) 7) Banjo Kazooie (one of the best game designs of all time) 8) Conker (Fantastic and rare mature content + funny and great multiplayer) 9) Diddy Kong Racing (fantastic multiplayer, graphics and characters) 10) Wave Race -(Best water physics ever seen and fantastic fun) ......Nintendo could not miss back in those days....far cry from them and gaming in general these days.
I'm currently playing through DK 64 (right now Diddy's section of Creepy Castle) and I can say with confidence that it makes perfect sense why DK 64 did not make this list. I would argue that Diddy Kong Racing belongs one this list more so then Wave Race for its blending of genres and balanced gameplay (for the time).
@@n64glennplant 😂 He was my initial go to, however it's only fair to give the returning champ a fighting chance. If the quality of your content declines by the winter (impossible) we can throw his name in then lol. 😉
My personal alltime Favourites would be: Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Perfect Dark, Ocarina of Time, Super Smash Bros., Mario Party, F-Zero X, Turok 2, Donald Duck Quack Attack (or "Goin' Quackers" how it was called in other countrys), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. I've spent a lot of my childhood with those games, playing them alone, or with family members and friends (we played a lot of perfect dark and mario kart at weekends and during school holidays, sometimes Mario Party and Smash Bros., when the girls came over).
1. Ocarina of Time 2. Super Mario 64 3. WrestleMania 2000 4. Banjo-Kazooie 5. Diddy Kong Racing 6. Majoras Mask 7. Mario Kart 64 8. WCW/nWo Revenge 9. Conkers Bad Fur Day 10. F-Zero X

DOOM 64 3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Super Mario 64 1. Banjo-Kazooie Number 11 would be Banjo-Tooie. I've never beaten Conker, Goldeneye, or Perfect Dark!! T-T I'm curious to know your personal top 10 N64 list!

@@n64glennplant Glad to see you back! Wonderful cont;ent. My wife is Hungarian and I am moving there soon. While visiting back at my parents farm, I was amazed to see my old 64. Nothing connected my family more than Nintendo. The best times as a child for me, is seeing my mother beating Smb. Later in life, while waiting on her gamo treatments Playing the hotel's console with my father. My wife and I packed it away to keep the tradition going. Also,my mom likes hearing my wife lose in Hungarian after mario cart..Thank you for the inspiration to write this. I apologize for the grammar. I use to always watch your videos back in the day because the obscure titles I collected. And you always give games a chance. I hope you have a great day.
I didn't put a lot of thought into this list but off the top of my head I think my top 10 would look like this: #1 Ocarina of Time #2 Super Mario 64 #3 Majora's Mask #4 Super Smash Bros. 64 #5 Banjo Kazooie #6 Mario Kart 64 #7 Custom Robo #8 Sin and Punishment #9 Conker's BFD #10 Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 I reallly think 7 & 8 would have been big hits if they were released internationally.
forgot about SIn and Punishment, excellent game that I have no nostalgia for as I didn't play it until it was on the Wii VC. Speaking of Wii, Sin and Punishment Star Sucessor was another excellent game that got a western release.
That's a good top 10. I remember being really upset when Sin and Punishment's wordwide release was cancelled as I was really hyped for it. Thankfully, they (kind of) rectified their mistake by putting it on the Wii Virtual Console and then also releasing the sequel in the West.
My top 10 would certainly include Diddy Kong Racing. As much as I love Wave Race 64, DKR has a lot more to offer. Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 should be there too
MM probably sold less than OOT because it was late in the consoles life cycle and also required the expansion pak, which was a hefty asking price in 2000 since so few games actually use it. My personal opinion is that any game after 2000 should have, at minimum, had a higher resolution mode for use with the xpak, if not more features like rogue squadron.
I am actually more surprised there isn't a single Mario Party game on the list. Those are just iconic parts of N64 history with all those hand burns and memorable mini games. Even though I do agree to some part with list, the order is incorrect. Turok should have been on a list for sure !
Majora's would be my number one, easily. Ocarina is just the standard archetypes polished beyond anything we had any right to expect, with a fun dark twist or two. But Majora's Mask organically explores how heroes can fall, and how the lonely can be exploited. Instead of lecturing us about prejudice, it allows us to explore both the rewards and consequences...just that little puppy in Clocktown has more to say on the subject than Sesame Street ever could. It feels too honest to be a AAA game. And I've never seen anything like it, since. Plus, those boss battles are some of the best in the entire series. And for once, the NPCs have more than one personality trait. I help them because I actually want to, not just because of what they can give me. The only weakness vs. Ocarina, is the dungeon design. Ocarina's are a blast to explore, while Majora's feel like "make work" at times.
yeah I agree, for me MM is more like an exploration of atmosphere and alternative experiences where as OOT is more like your traditional hero quest type experience, both awesome in their own right but comparing them against one another I think is impossible as they aren't really designed to compete but compliment one another

This was a great video mate! I loved it, was really entertaining.
thank you for watching linkin :)
I enjoyed the video! Would be cool to go over IGN's and Gamespot's top ten N64 games as well!
Maybe I’ll get around to those in the coming months
Here’s a fact, Ocarina of Time is the highest rated Metacritic game of all time.
Can’t believe you’re back with a vengeance. So many videos recently.
some spare time on my hands and heads back in the right space to be doing it !
Thank God!
He dies so hard..
I think Diddy Kong Racing was much funner and a better game overall than Mario tennis. I would rate it in the top 10 for sure.
Two reviews dragged it down to an 88.
I'd argue it's better in some areas than Mario Kart, even.
DKR is easily a top 10 for me, absolute classic and set many standards that kart games would adopt
Dkr mechanics are so deep. Absolutely amazing game. Top 10 for me
Funny how the fun factor of “going through rings” in games can differ…. Looking at u wave race and superman!
haha thats so true frank!
Can't forget Star Fox 😅
@@malonkelp lol well star fox opened up more levels on some stages
Please never put wave race and superman 64 in the same sentence, thats blasphemy
Big-time sleeper hit that needs a remake: Space Station Silicon Valley. I’m amazed I’ve never seen another game where you can play as every enemy you kill. What an awesome concept!
There’s a lot of fans just check out the n64 one hit wonders video I did and it’s full of people desperate for it to come back
Did you know that the devs of that game went on to become one of the biggest game developers in history?...Rockstar North.
Don’t trust Metacritic for N64, you must trust Glenn!
Glenncritic is my go to site too. Way more beliviable.
Metacritic is just a review aggregate site, there isn't much to trust or distrust. They just collate reviews from all over. There is debate about weighted reviews but yea, might as well blame all the individual reviewers who gave these games those high scores. Which, you have to keep in mind were mostly given at the time of the games' releases.
trust me and the reptile overlords only
@@n64glennplant All hail our reptillian overlords!!
Literally any time I see a tempting game for sale I'm unfamiliar with, I come to this channel.
1. Legend of Zelda: OoT
2. Perfect Dark
3. Shadow Man
4. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
5. Super Smash Bros
6. F-Zero X
7. Rogue Squadron
8. Body Harvest
9. Jet Force Gemini
10. Winback
Thank you for including Winback. It's in my top 10 as well
interesting to see winback on that list - did you not prefer the ps2 version?
@@n64glennplant i can't speak for berserkism.... but I definitely preferred the N64 version.
I enjoyed the improved visuals and entertaining janky voice acting of the PS2 version. But I had a much easier time controlling the game on the N64 than PS2. For whatever reason I was godly at headshots on the N64 version but not not the PS2.
F-Zero X for the win!
Waverace 64 is a masterpiece and deserves to be higher than #8
It's REALLY tough for me to put together my top 10 for N64. So many fun games, and there's quite a few titles I've yet to experience.
Here's my list as it stands today:
Ocarina of Time
Goldeneye 007
Goemon's Great Adventure
Banjo Kazooie
Shadowman
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Snowboard Kids
Resident Evil 2
Bomberman Hero
Mario Party 2
have you tried the shadow man remaster?
@@n64glennplant I have not. Gonna buy a switch once it's available on that system. So excited about that release. Hoping for a limited run edition at see point, like what they did with the Turok editions!
With the N64 often I find it has to be a top 25, but if the intent is minimalism, my top 5:
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ( Replayability, 3D Action Adventure RPG, Timeless Coming of Age Story)
Perfect Dark (Co-Op, Counter Op, Combat Simulator)
Rush 2049 (Variety, Ease of Play/ Challenging to Master, Head to Head Races)
Donkey Kong 64 (Endless Adventure, Various Game Modes, Multi Play)
Ogre Battle 64 (Replayabilty, Countless Hours, Tactical Strategy RPG)
Honorable Mentions: Flying Dragon, Sin and Punishment, Goemon's Great Adventure, and any Mario Themed Game..
The definitive N64 reviewer is back! Glenn, it's great to have you creating content again!
Thanks Aaron really appreciate ethat
My most played N64 games as a kid were banjo kazooie, goldeneye, mario kart, super mario 64, star fox64, majoras mask and my personal favorite ocarina of time. I'm not surprised most of them made the top 10 metacritic lists. Great video as always glenn.
thanks K, there's some classics on your list right there that are all worthy of being played
@@n64glennplant
Most definitely. Glad your back glenn love the channel.
Great video. My personal number 1 is Perfect Dark. I would definitely have WWF No Mercy in my Top 10.
1. Perfect Dark
2. Goldeneye 007
3. Ocarina of Time
4. Mario 64
5. WWF No Mercy
6. Banjo-Kazooie
7. Diddy Kong Racing
8. WCW/nWo Revenge
9. F-Zero X
10. Mario Party
Very nice I like those choices! all awesome games
That's a pretty damn good list. It's so close my personal as well.
They were top 10 games to me.
are you looking forward to the new bond movie? its annoying how its been delayed so much isn't it
Mario Kart 64 was good, but felt exprimental in that you can cheese an opponent in a race by using items before a ramp and add 10-20 seconds to their time. Waverace, F-Zero, Beetle Adventure Racing all felt like more polished racing games, IMO. Also I liked Diddy Kong Racing, but hated the collecting enough stuff to unlock courses.
Mario kart 64 felt more like a proof of concept for 3D Mario kart racers than an actual decent game. Double dash on the gamecube is perfection.
@@StabStabStabStabby yeah, I would have to agree. MK64 was experimental, fun, but not as polished as many other racers on the N64.
I found a copy of Turok 2 in my storage bin. I have absolutely zero idea how I ever acquired it, as I've never played it before.
The water temple was the reason the 1% was knocked off
Dude. I remember I bought the official game guide at Walmart once I reached it. Needed help for sure...
that was so damn hard wasn't it
Everytime i was watching somebody playing Ocarina of Time they were at the Water Temple and i was puzzling with them to get through.
When i played Ocarina of Time YEARS later, it was the easiest one for me haha
Fun Fact, i don't know why, maybe because i watched so many People playing it, but when i borrowed the Game from my Cousin, i was only going fishing for two Weeks haha...
In fact I got stuck there as a kid and ended the game finally like 4 o 5 years later... xD
Greatest dungeon in all of Hyrule
A little unrelated but I remember back in Mexico in my grandparents home, summer and hot as hell, like heat stroke inducing heat. Having the AC all the way up while comfy AF under a big comforter and with my brother and cousin playing body harvest, Diddy Kong, RE 2 and Zelda on the n64 back in 99 or 2000. Man nothing will ever beat that feeling. I feel like things like these are what makes us keep going back to these ugly ass, but fun games. We were so happy and we didn't know it. Thank you for this channel 🙏. It triggers a lot of good memories and it's nice to hear a nice person talk about all my fav games from back then.
nostalgia plays a big part but luckily on this channel you're surrounded by a community that often feels the exact same way :)
@@n64glennplant Bless you brother
I believe it has to do with the timing too. Waverace was one of the first n64 games, therefore, it had a much bigger impact than it would have if it came out the same time conkers bad fur day did
yeah thats true, when it was released it would have got high scores which are factored into the meteoritic algorithm
I thought that. Saying it was a launch title they would have bigged up praise for it to help sales
Then it belongs on the top-ten most important N64 games NOT on a top ten BEST games.
@@Oleander410 It's not a best list though... It's the highest average review score list. These lists are pure math. They take the numbers from reviews and find the average. People taking these lists seriously is stupid.
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, the 1st one. I absolutely love it. So so much.
What a classic that game is
Oh man that game was and is absolutely amazing. Regardless of how long ago I beat it I still remember how great it was. I would throw money at Nintendo if they remade or at least re-release it on the switch.
My number 1 wouldn’t be OoT… cus it would be Perfect Dark 😂
My man
PD is still a great game, im looking forward to seeing what the new one will be like
Ditto, PD is easily the best game on the console!
Yes 😎
Although it's a tussle between that and Star Fox 64 / Lylat Wars.
Same!
Thanks for coming back to RUclips, Glenn! I really have been enjoying your recent videos and the more nostalgic point of view instead of a critical review.
Glad you like them!
Man, Christmas of 2000 was one of the most memorable. I got Majora’s Mask and a Razor scooter, that was incredible.
Majorca’s mask 🔥 razor scooter (the game) 💩 but if you got an actual razor scooter that’s much better haha
@@n64glennplant actual razor scooter, but I did have the terrible game on PS1 at one point 😂
That’s another good point and I know the availability of expansion packs may have varied between region and country etc
I don’t know why majoras mask under sold to OOT. Majoras mask has been my favorite game since I first finished it. It’s so beautiful and really pulled at the heart strings. The collecting of the masks too was always so fun for me! Great video dude! I’m so glad you’re back!!

My top ten:
10 Ogre Battle 64- Amazing game. Tactical RPG with tons of team customisation and deep gameplay. Can be slow but once you get over that its incredible
Would spend all night with my brother versing bots or each other in the multiplayer.
what a great list and cool to see your reasons why also!
1: Super Mario 64
2: Goldeneye 007
3: The Legend of Zelda: OOT
4: Perfect Dark
5: Starfox 64 (Lylat Wars)
6: Banjo-Kazooie
7: Diddy Kong Racing
8: Conker’s Bad Fur Day
9: Mario Kart 64
10: Jet Force Gemini
I was close to placing either Donkey Kong 64, Majora’s Mask or Banjo Tooie at No. 10, but I feel they are too similar to games that are already on this list. Jet Force Gemini is very much a unique title and is criminally underrated.
That’s a lovely list right there isn’t it
100% agree that Conker deserves a higher rank than #9.
1. Conker's Bad Fur Day

5. Banjo-Tooie
6. Resident Evil 2
7. Super Mario 64

You really need to get OOT ticked off your games you’ve played list - it’s superb!
I think it’ll have a resurgence in popularity again now
Great video. Really makes me think. I'd have to take some time to fill out a proper list, but one game I'd have on there for sure is 1080 Snowboarding. I feel it is perhaps the N64 game that has aged the best. It still looks great and feels as amazing to play as it did back then. I re-visit it quite often.
I absolutely agree. It's great. In my top 10 as well.
1080 is awesome, probably not quite top 10 for me but still a damn fun game
Today I found my OLD N64 I had as a very young kid.
It was in my mom's basement. xD And I had recently bought another n64 months ago.
I have been watching your channel for a while for game recommendations.
If I were to talk about my fav games, I would talk about my fav games from childhood memory (& not my collection atm).
Fav Childhood N64 Games:
1. Mario Party 2
2. Yoshi Story
3. Super Mario 64 (my favorite today)
4. Pokemon Stadium
4. Tom and Jerry in Fists of Furry
5. Donkey Kong 64
6. F-Zero X
7. Zelda Ocarina of Time
8. Pokémon Puzzle League
Donkey Kong 64 & F-Zero X are low on the list, because I would play them at the Dentist (they had an N64 setup/still do).
(on top of that!)
I was very young when I played the n64. Single digit.
Of course, other games I liked outside the system were Pikmen & Timesplitters 2 / Future Perfect, but n64 games have a very special place in my heart as childhood games.
The cool thing is now you’re older you can get loads of the games you were missing out on as a kid 😀

Yeah mario tennis is fun but imho defo not in the top 10 best on the console
The reason why "Majora's Mask" didn't sell as much as "Ocarina of Time" isn't much of a mystery: The game was released literally the same week as the PlayStation 2. The N64 as a whole was pretty much done from a sales perspective.
Also, the 3 day cycle was considered as way too intimidating and stressful by many people, which didn't help.
good points amongst others which are likely spot on
This is the true N64 channel amongst all channels. Love your analysis and narration and glad you're back Glenn.
Thanks harrami 😀
Mario Tennis is only that high, because it's Waluigi's debut game. : )
amen - always need more waluigi
Wave Race 64 absolutely deserves to be in the top 10 all time N64 games. In fact, for me it’s #1. It perfectly nailed what it set out to do, and to this day no other water racing game has ever been as good.
It’s a good game but cmon it’s not the best n64 game ever
@@n64glennplant That’s entirely dependent on what you want in a video game. If you want a giant world to explore, no, it’s not the best. If you enjoy racing games, than it very well might be.
@@DeesBees85 true but wanting a water racing game is ultra specific. There’s better racers imho on the console
My personal top 10
1. Smash Bros
2. Banjo Kazooie
3. Goldeneye
4. Super Mario 64
5. Conkers Bad Fur Day
6. Ocarina of Time
7. Mario Kart 64
8. Pokemon Stadium
9. Jet Force Gemini
10. Mario Party 2
thats a lovely list, I liked the new controls they added in the rare replay JFG
17:46 It sounds like you were talking from experience
gulp! maybe, maybe not :)
#that'sthejoke
Glenn’s videos are so relaxing
thanks eleven, n64 and chill!
I have the exact same feeling about OOT a warmth comes over me and only with the original N64 version. I still play it when I stop by my parents around the holidays.
My personal top 10
Goldeneye 007
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Banjo-Kazooie
Conkers Bad Fur Day
Perfect Dark
Super Mario 64
Diddy Kong Racing/Mario Kart(tie)
Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask
Paper Mario
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
There are many more I couldn't fit on this list as well.
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is my favorite N64 game. I am being serious!
I think it’s starting to get a resurgence of popularity ya know!
I think the only thing that hurt the game was basically being a "director's cut" of Castlevania 64 released way too soon after that title. Either it needed to wait or should have been the game we got in the first place.
I loved Castlevania 64! Finally getting to play legacy of darkness now lol 20 or so years late but better than never!
This is the earliest I've ever been, all these games have been a huge part of my life.
and continue to be an important part right
@@n64glennplant I still to this day will play my original N64 and will play OOT in one sitting just for fun.
Personal Top 10:
1. Zelda OOT
2. Banjo Kazooie
3. Mario Kart 64
4. Perfect Dark
5. Mario 64
6. Beetle Adventure Racing
7. Zelda MM
8. Quake II
9. Resident Evil 2
10. Star Wars Rogue Squadron
So hard to boil it down to 10. Lot of great games that I adore just missing the cut (Goldeneye, Lylatwars, F-Zero X etc)
I think the hardest part of anyone’s top 10 is thinking which games will have to be cut
Great video mate 👍 😎
AncientGamer 🎮
That’s half the problem, deciding what not to put top 10 rather than what goes on it!
My top N64 games of all time:
10-Paper Mario
9-Resident Evil 2
8-F-Zero X
7-Star Fox 64
6-Banjo-Kazooie
5-Smash Bros
4-GoldenEye 007
3-Mario Kart 64
2-
1-Ocarina Of Time/Super Mario 64
That’s a cool list, love seeing re2 on there
@@n64glennplant Yours is pretty cool too.
RE2 is awesome and I love it.
Majoras Mask didn’t sell nearly as well as Ocarina of Time simply because it came out late in 2000 during the launch of the PS2 and the Dreamcast already being out. Just like Conkers, if it came out in 98-99, it would have sold multiple times more.
The required expansion pak was the reason I couldn't play Majora's Mask as a child, so you were spot on as far as I'm concerned.
ah thats a shame man, have you played it now though?
Some of my faves. Duke Nukem zero hour. XG2. Aerofighters Assault. Forsaken. Shadow man. Vigilante 8.
Lovely choices, did you play the forsaken remaster?
Pilot wings is such a chill game I love that so much
@@n64glennplant So do I, especially during times where I really need to unwind. Funny thing is that at one point my fiancee wanted me to sell my Pilotwings 64 game because the game didn't appeal to her based on the characters and or graphics. It was a very dumb reason. Needless to say, i still have the game to this day.😊
Winback 64 was one of my all time favorites!!
Or Turok.
Both great games weren’t they
This is the first time i’ve ever disagreed with you. Mario Tennis awesome. What I love is that a non gamer can pick this up and play well in a relatively short period of time. It has depth too. One of the best party games ever.
its a great game but the 10th best game on the console? not a chance for me, there's so many better games IMHO
@@n64glennplant By the way, I thought that video you made about your memories of gaming with your father was one of the best and most touching vids I have ever seen on RUclips. I shared it on my Facebook profile. Outstanding.
Friday Night and the wonderful N64 Glenn Plant is with a new video here, yay😃🎉🤗
thanks farmer - ill keep lining them up!
Just picked up Retro-bit's Tribute 64 wireless controller and have been playing the N64 more. Your videos are great!
I’ll have to see if I can find one of those at an ok price
How I rank my favorite N64 titles will likely continue to change, but this is how I currently see it;
1- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
3- Banjo&Tooie
4- Banjo-Kazooie
5- Super Mario 64
6- Star Fox 64
7- Diddy Kong Racing
8- F-Zero X
9- Mario Party 3
10- Mario Party 2
interesting to see so many multiplayer games on the list
I had never even heard of Mario tennis, definitely no top 10 😂
It’s a good game but no way top 10 on the console
Big games for me as a kid were, Tony Hawks Pro Skater of course, how this didn't make Meta's list is beyond me, Jet Force Gemini, still some of most fond memories of gaming and of course, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, probably my favorite game of all at the time.
Lylat Wars is always good. The characters in Mystical Ninja have FOUR walk/run animations each !! And Castlevania 64, while having a tough camera and platforming sections, is scary:o
mystical ninja is awesome isn't it
Wave Race 64 deserves that spot. I'd put it a lot higher, even. It aged amazingly well, in fact no water based racer has surpassed it's gameplay to date, it's sequel included.
100% agreed
Ahh.. the Nintendo 64.
1.) Legend of Zelda: OoT
2.) Perfect Dark
3.) Shadow Man
4.) Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
5.) WWF No Mercy
6.) Goldeneye 007
7.) F-Zero X
8.) Mario Kart 64
9.) Castlevania
10.) 1080 Snowboarding
some of my all time fav games on that list right there you know
@@n64glennplant Oh definitely! Having gone back to watch several of your reviews I can totally see why. 😊💗

1. Ocarina of Time
2. GoldenEye
3. Rogue Squadron
4. Ogre Battle 64
5. Mario Kart 64
6. Perfect Dark
7. F-Zero X
8. Mortal Kombat Trilogy (I regret nothing)
9. Tie- Automobili Lamborghini/World Driver Championship
10. Star fox 64
Honourable mentions go to Wave Race, Doom 64, and Shadows of the Empire

I also just found it very fun to unlock the cars in that game. Plus the Diablo has always been my favourite car.

1. WWF No Mercy
2. Super Smash Bros.
3. Perfect Dark
4. Quake II
5. The World is Not Enough
6. Mario Tennis
7. Gauntlet Legends
8. Goldeneye

very interesting pick with the new Tetris, that was a ton of fun
IDK...but w/out thinking much... & in no particular order: Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, WWF No Mercy (& all the AKI/THQ games as honorable mentions), Mario Kart 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, NFL Blitz, Knockout Kings 2000, Banjo-Kazooie ... this will change over & over lol
1: Banjo Tooie
2: Banjo Kazooie
3: Mario Kart 64

7: Diddy Kong Racing
8: Goldeneye/Perfect Dark
9: Conkers Bad Fur Day
10: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
That’s a lovely list although if I was putting an MK game on mine I’d put 4 😁
Rare games was ahead of its time aka DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo Kazooie and Conker’s Bad Fur Day
Yeah rare we’re always on 🔥 when it came to n64
@@n64glennplant not to mention or forget, also Goldeneye and Perfect Dark too lol. Crazy era it was.
I took a look at the wider Metacritic N64 list. Surprised to see SSB all the way at 40 with a 79 average. Sure, later games in the series have eclipsed it, but it seems like it should be in the top 20 at least.
I know right, its insane for it to be 79
My heart jumped when you put in a Harvest Moon clip at the very end. It’s amazing that one guy just looked around and went: Seriously, NOBODY has tried to make more farming village games? All right, here’s Stardew Valley… aaaand now I’m a multimillionaire.
Haha I know right! Lots of nostalgia for that one
Never been more addicted to a game than diddy Kong racing and fully completing it, it had no right being that good, most underrated game ever.
Amen to that, one of my all time favs
i feel like majora's mask's problem with sales was just the timing of its release. it came out only 2 years after the previous zelda game and at that point in the n64's lifecycle there were so many other games competing with it in terms of depth and length that i just didn't have the bandwidth to put that much time and effort into yet another deep, lengthy game when i was still working on others. it looked cool and all but it was still just like "another zelda game already? ok, well, maybe i'll check it out after i finish the games i'm already working on."... and by that time the gamecube was on the horizon and i feel like myself and others sort of just forgot about the game til years later.
Also I think the darker tone of the game alienated a lot of the younger audience or rather their parents which didn't deem the game as appropriate for them.
thats a very good and valid point, its rare that you get Zelda games in such quick succession isn't it
@@n64glennplant yes, and there was just so much other competition in the "long engaging game" space at the point it released, as well. i feel like if nintendo had just held off and released majora's mask on the gamecube - even if it were just a bonus "uprezed" version of the n64 version - it would have done much better. but who knows.
I love that game too, I think X is the best in the games history but it’s a shame we’ve waited so long for a new one now
That soundtrack is so rad!
1. Super Mario 64
2. Banjo Kazooie
3. Goldeneye
4. Mario Party 2/3
5. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
6. Diddy Kong Racing
7. Goemon's Great Adventure
8. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
9. Perfect Dark
10. Snowboard Kids 2
love that list, especially seeing snowboard kids on it
One of the toughest top-10's of any console ever! Video games essentially peaked at this era...truly a revolutionary phase!
As far as top-10's go....
1) Super Mario (a release title that ushered in the modern era of gaming)
2) Zelda Ocarina of time (a breathtaking journey...EOD)
3) Golden Eye (the best multi-player experience of all time)
4) Mario Kart (The second best multi-player experience of all time)
6) Perfect Dark (Improved on golden eye in every single way)
7) Banjo Kazooie (one of the best game designs of all time)
8) Conker (Fantastic and rare mature content + funny and great multiplayer)
9) Diddy Kong Racing (fantastic multiplayer, graphics and characters)
10) Wave Race -(Best water physics ever seen and fantastic fun)
......Nintendo could not miss back in those days....far cry from them and gaming in general these days.
Dkr would always be in my top 10, just love that title

I didn't put a lot of thought into this list but off the top of my head I think my top 10 would look like this:
#1 Ocarina of Time
#2 Super Mario 64
#3 Majora's Mask
#4 Super Smash Bros. 64
#5 Banjo Kazooie
#6 Mario Kart 64
#7 Custom Robo
#8 Sin and Punishment
#9 Conker's BFD
#10 Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64
I reallly think 7 & 8 would have been big hits if they were released internationally.
always love seeing someone have sin and punishment on their list - its a sin it didn't get a western release.
forgot about SIn and Punishment, excellent game that I have no nostalgia for as I didn't play it until it was on the Wii VC.
I am amazed by the huge distance we can estimate, between you, and the 2nd best expert of the N64 on Earth.
Haha thank you, there’s a lot of n64 fans more knowledgeable than I am but I’m one of a few to RUclips about it
@@n64glennplant being an expert is a thing, and being able to produce content of quality to share this expertise is another thing.
I adore Ocarina of Time. Experiencing it for the first time with my brothers and playing it while growing up was such a blessing
I just wish more people could experience the whole experience like that more often, games like that don't come along often enough
The adult castle town section gave me a nightmare at age 6 I still remember vividly to this day two decades later
My top 10 would certainly include Diddy Kong Racing. As much as I love Wave Race 64, DKR has a lot more to offer. Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 should be there too
DKR is one of my all time go to games so its a top 10 for me too
MM probably sold less than OOT because it was late in the consoles life cycle and also required the expansion pak, which was a hefty asking price in 2000 since so few games actually use it.
My personal opinion is that any game after 2000 should have, at minimum, had a higher resolution mode for use with the xpak, if not more features like rogue squadron.
I know it’s a shame that even some late games didn’t use it right
I am actually more surprised there isn't a single Mario Party game on the list.
Ocarina's are a blast to explore, while Majora's feel like "make work" at times.
yeah I agree, for me MM is more like an exploration of atmosphere and alternative experiences where as OOT is more like your traditional hero quest type experience, both awesome in their own right but comparing them against one another I think is impossible as they aren't really designed to compete but compliment one another
ahh GRU still feeling the Thicc transparency almost throwing His 3DS out of his hand Fishing on OOT
