I'm exactly 1 day older than you.. just bought a n64 with a bunch of games to take a break from my ps5.. like stan with Heroin Hero lol. Brings back a lot of memories too 😎
Honestly dk64 is so underrated. The concept is perfect and as it is big, good, it should be. Nothing today could match my unlimited attention span for video game consoles like the Nintendo 64. Dk64 was the thing i needed for my parents not have to listen me complaining about how there aren't any battery left in my gameboy color. When that game came out, i was so excited because i loved dkc as a series.
I LOVE DK64. I hate how people to this very day unironically accuse it of singlehandedly ending the collectathon genre. Of course, anyone who actually believes collectathons aren't a thing anymore has clearly never played Assassins Creed.
How come I never see any channel mention Vigilante 8? I absolutely loved that game and had a killer time with it as a kid. The unique and individually distinct characters you could play, the level design, and seemingly endlessly fun combat just made that game a staple in my rotation as a kid when I had the n64. There are others of course that worth mentioning and I cannot even recall their names, but that game holds a special place in my childhood memories. That, Starfox, Banjo Kazooie, Mario 64 and Ocarina of time along with Mario kart and many more were just incredible games.
The N64 was my first console dating all the way back to Christmas 1996. I was only barely 5 years old, Super Mario 64 was my first game, and it was the one game I would occasionally return to even when we got new games. It's easily in my top five favorite video games of all time. I really enjoyed this video, it was a nice walk down nostalgia lane. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
Very nice list. I agree with most of your choices and reasons. Though Majora's Mask is my favorite game of all time, so that'd be my number one. Also, a (what seems to be) relatively unknown game called Ogre Battle 64 would be in my top 10 as well
Just use control style 1.2, which puts forward/back/strafe on the C-buttons and look on the control stick, similar to keyboard WASD+mouse look on PC. Much better than the default control scheme.
The Nintendo 64 will always be my favourite era of gaming, having 3 brothers surely helped with that. There's too many amazing games to make a top 20, really. Imagine if the N64 had a built-in timer logging how much we played it in the latter half of the 90s! The only one I'd put way higher than "honourable mentions" is Blast Corps. Rare absolutely dominated this era.
Back in its time I thought SM64 was so overrated, but recently I got into the ROM hacks still breathing life into it today. The strength of that community and the diversity of content of SM64 hacks are testament to how good it was. The complex mechanics and incredibly high ceiling of mastering the controls were above any other platformers on the console, yet the level of entry was low enough you didn't need to master anything.
I agree actually, the jump to 3D was crazy to experience and Pokemon fever made it super hype. It's sort of a better experience but not a better console is ine way to put it imo
Have really fond memories of both, A Link to the Past blew my mind as an 8 year old when it launched, and Mario world is the best 2d Mario IMO, but when the N64 launched, it made everything feel bigger and more interesting. I would agree, as limited at the library was, the N64 probably had a larger impact on me than the SNES.
Did I like this video? Of course, but 2 games deserved genuine spots, in my opinion. Wave Race and dude...WCW/nWo Revenge(I think). Some of those wrestling games WERE THE SHIT!

I think Kirby's Dream Course for the SNES could be considered Kirby's true first venture into 3D. It's also my favorite golf game over Mario Golf even.
@KurodaKyousuke Dude, I'm 38 & I missed out on this gem as a kid & just recently played it on a hacked SNES mini. There's a learning curve (which I don't mind) & each hole is different, & you must adjust power, angle, spin etc. Also, I got a hole in one early on which hooked me. A truly unique, & wonderfully executed SNES titles IMO. Anyways, Thanks for the response.
I got a used N64 sometime around 98 along with Ocarina of Time. I had a couple friends with one though so I had plenty of Goldeneye XP. You didnt have a proper childhood if you didnt get blisters on you palms trying to win the raft minigame in Mario Party.
OOT was FAR better than sm64. The rest of the list is great, but this is the only placement I strongly disagree on. Ocarina of Time had a much bigger world than the levels of sm64 combined, better bossfights, more atmosphere, a better story, and more people cite OOT as the game that shaped their childhood than sm64. Ocarina was also just a mechanically more complex game. SM64 is still fantastic though. This video is too :)
Interesting take. I personally think it's closer than you'd think. The controls alone are super innovative in SM64, but then again comparing the two is a bit like apples and oranges.
Paper Mario does hold up VERY well. It's a very polished and well made light RPG, and I think a lot of younger people would still enjoy it today, whereas a lot of these other games are just not going to be appreciated in the context of modern gaming in 2024.
I agree with Mario 64 Ridiculously good. It is still fun and it , Ocarina of time and Goldeneye are all probably responsible for all modern gaming. Mario 64 is more than just nostalgia. Oh and I was high too right so that contributed to it too im sure lol.
Making me seriously consider getting a modded N64 with an Everdrive 64 now 😅 though I blame how awful F-Zero X is on Switch. The only thing on this list I disagree with really is that Wave Race 64 has no spot in the top 20. But that's because its in my top 20 of any platform. XD This list has been a great trip down memory lane for a Dreamcast fanboy ^_^ though I was a teenager when I got an N64. The only real big hitting N64 game I can think that is absent is Beetle Adventure Racing. But your list is solid enough to understand its exclusion. Oh and Space Station Silicon Valley! Maybe an N64 mini isn't so impossible after all XD
I appreciate your list. I have never really understood the love for Super Mario 64. I started on the Atari 2600 at 4 years old and worked my way up through NES, SNES, then N64. When I got the 64 and finally popped in Mario, I didn't like how Mario felt to control & I have never been able to get the hang of it since. I adore other 3D platformers, but Mario's momentum-based movement just felt really bad in 3D to me. Don't get me started on his behavior regarding slopes or ice physics. He just feels slow, cumbersome, and at the constant mercy of the controls and camera. I think as a kid I really just wanted more sidescrolling levels to play through after being high on Super Mario World. I would have been happy with a 2.5D sidescroller or even something like Crash Bandicoot. My PS1 definitely got a lot more love in that era.
Mario 64 is definitely overrated and feels stiff, but it's still fun if you can get over the controls. Mario Sunshine is the vastly superior Mario game.
@@VulpasI would say it’s the camera more than it’s the controls. I like the controls, and when I played Mario odyssey I was able to pretty well muscle memory all the jumps and maneuvers. Also, this generation of gamers always dogs on the N64 because the graphics and controls are out dated but they don't realize that most of the games that were designed for the console are a lot of fun, addicting (that can be good and bad lol) and have a lot of replayability. The video of that kid on Christmas is so freaking hilarious.
I still remember when I purchased my N64 at Kmart. What a system!
Kmart! Wow!

My list is pretty similar but way differently ordered. Great video!
Man having the 64 was cool. When I got the GameCube for Christmas in 2001 I was happy
The n64 was loaded with great games. Mario Tennis totally changed My opinion on sports based games. What a blast
I totally agree! (Also, hi Jake! 👋)
Goldeneye MarioKart Ocarina No Mercy all incredible even by today’s standards
Knockout kings and both WCW wrestling games for N64 should be on this list
As someone who is about 7 years younger than you, the N64 gave me some of my first gaming experiences ever.
Perfect dark is IMO just better than goldeneye in every way but usually looked over due to late release in n64 lifespan and goldeneye coming first
Harvest moon and winback would have to make my list
I do not fully agree on the list but thats personal and fine. Good video, well made!

Me Too! Nintendo 64 Has Been My Most Favorite Gaming Console Since My Childhood. It Brings Back So Many Good Memories. 👍
This was a very beautiful video 🥲
Thank you!!
0:18 Those were the days. Do kids still get this excited about consoles?
Kids these days for the most part think that they deserve everything. The media is running the show.
Not to that degree. That ended with that generation, maybe Dreamcast was the last system to get people that hyped.
The one racing game on N64 that doesn't get its dues definitely would be Episode 1 Racer.
You can't talk about the best N64 games and not at least give a nod to WCW/NWO Revenge or WWF No Mercy...........
What a shame ! Revenge was the best wrestling game as soon as it came out.. then no mercy just made it better.
Did I like this video? Of course, but 2 games deserved genuine spots, in my opinion. Wave Race and dude...WCW/nWo Revenge(I think). Some of those wrestling games WERE THE SHIT!
