So who's looking forward to the N64 Mini Classic console and do you think any of these games will end up on it? what do you think the top 5 or top 10 adult or violent games of all time are? Like me do you love classic PC games like quake and doom? Do you think the playstation 1 or Sega Saturn had any adult games which you'd have liked to have been ported to the Nintendo 64?

Conkers Bad Fur Day is what happens when a developer makes one too many cutie platformers and they snap. Also yea to confuse and make someone concerned about you show them that game
Thank god you included Quake 64. I was concerned
I was such a little shit when I was a kid. I remember getting Resident Evil 2 for N64 for Christmas and my parents made the mistake of putting the present under the tree a few weeks before Christmas. One night they left me home alone and I carefully unwrapped the game and played it for hours, eventually beating the game. I rewraped it and placed it back under the tree and had to pretend to be surprised on Christmas day hahaha
haha man you know stories such as that always bring a smile to my face
Video Games and Other Vices and in doing so, you ruined your own Christmas. ;)
@@inphanta what do you mean? There was still the second character campaign to play through :)
@@retro_jojo3159 theres no way you bet that game in a few hours like that.
@@eeefox1 you may be right, I'm pretty sure i did the rerwap and open again at least a couple times. I did beat the game before Christmas day, that's for certain

Y'all? Don't be cringey.
Conker's BFD is a cult classic and one of my favorite games of all time. Perfect Dark is great too.
I've generally found it amusing how 'Mature Rated' games to be the most juvenile in terms of humour and content; They've never really been aimed at adults.
Well in the US the M rating is 17 plus so I guess that hits the demographic there. Here in the Uk adult is 18 plus I believe
@@n64glennplant Indeed. And game rating standards have traditionally been a mess too.
yeah there's nothing universal and country to country is different too - just be thankful were not in Germany hah
@@n64glennplant I think I'm a bit older than you (also from the UK) and so am aware of how German censorship influenced PAL localisations - but I was NOT prepared for bloody *dinosaurs* existing in Carmageddon. Amazing stuff!
N64 Glenn Plant in germany, zombie army trilogy was edited to remove all swastikas but they left all the pentagrams.
hitler? no!
the evil that infested hitler? fine.
Duke Nukem Zero Hour was such an underrated game, and Shadow Man deserves to be far more remembered than it is.
yeah Its just a shame how much their ruined shadow man with the sequel
Judah Earl love your profile pic!
So glad to see Turok Rage Wars getting some recognition. Used to love playing this with my friends back then.
see I was never a big fan but I can appreciate its an OK game, just wasn't my thing
Monkey mode was everything haha
I never noticed the ratings of games back in the N64 generation. It wasn't until the following generation (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Dreamcast) that the ratings became a bigger thing. Luckily, I didn't have over protective parents and played plenty of "mature" games, even before the N64 with games like the original Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis or Ultimate Doom on PC.
The only time I ever had any run in with the ratings was when I briefly owned Mortal Kombat Mythologies. The Best Buy we went to didn't have much to choose from and it was either Mythologies or Clayfighter 63 1/3. Regretting my purchase and with some quick thinking, I told my dad when we got in the car to go home that the game I bought was rated M and that I "shouldn't have gotten it", so he took the game back in the store and got my money back. Dodged a massive bullet there.
N64 never had a problem with a lack of M rated games. It did have problems with a lack of fighting games and RPGs.
Haha that story is hilarious 😂
It started about 1992 I remember the Mortal Kombat controversy between SNES and the Genesis.
Mortal kombat started the ratings shit in video games, 2 Live Crew started it in Music, can someone tell me who started it in movies?
I always remember watching my sister playing resident evil 2, I was so amazed by the cutscenes. Love that you mix up the content!
I'm trying to mix it up more in 2019 than I have in previous years. are you getting the new RE2 this month?
@@n64glennplant probably will be getting it, also planning to play more on my Switch
that makes a lot of sense - better safe than sorry hey
As a DOOM fan myself “DOOM64” is really a hidden gem. If I was collecting it’s something I’d pick up first for the system.
Yeah it’s a shame that I think a lot of people overlook it maybe thinking it’s just a port of doom 2 of something like that
There is a really good mod that ports it to pc.
That was really my first Doom I played...ill never forget it. I was in the 4th grade. My friend let me borrow it during Christmas break. I couldn't sleep well but it was worth it. Snowy Christmas that year. I was 9 or 10. This game caused me a lot of stress and agony. I don't regret it one bit. I would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night to play it like one gets a midnight snack. My uncle got possessed by an evil spirit around the same time. True fucking story but it had nothing to do with doom
As a Doom fan, I think that EVERY kid that plays Doom on a joypad, should never reproduce.
YMI can you play it somehow on pc?
Quite frankly, though, I was never really bothered by the N64's "kiddie" image. To me, a game's fun factor was far more important (and, after all, isn't the main goal of a video game to be fun?). And, in hindsight, I think a lot of its criticisms in that regard stemmed mostly from the era it was from (teenagers and young adults were making up a larger portion of the market, Nintendo was still feeling some of the sting of their "family friendly image" in the SNES-Genesis era, etc.).
That’s a great point, now the market is everyone but back then the only gamers I knew were around my generation too
I lost interest in all things Nintendo after the N64. Their cutesy characters and censorship really turned me off as a teenager. The GameCube is the last Nintendo product I've owned (mainly for RE4). I used to really like Nintendo but I wanted the more adult experiences that were PS exclusives.
@@hollywood21639 agreed tho I always bought the handhelds for the Pokemon games and the consoles if they had animal crossing or harvest moon on it
Totally agree, and i hate to pick sides but n64 had way more of a fun factor than ps1. I'd say the Dreamcast would be a better competition to 64 than the playstation
Loved the overview of the M-rated games that were on the system. This was more of the generation I had more exposure with them, even on the so-called "kiddy" N64.
During my early teenage years, my parent didn't seem to mind me playing these M-rated games in general. In fact, my encounter with Turok 1 was my mom just randomly buying it alongside an N64 controller. Didn't know what to make of the game since I didn't read much into it in Nintendo Power but I ended up liking it once I dived into it. Not only that, she did get me Perfect Dark at a later point for doing good in school (which would end up being one of my favorite of the M-rated N64 games).
Now when it came to renting them, I was able to rent them, usually because those times, I had one of my parent with me, thus was my cover if it came up. The clerk usually didn't say anything about it except for when I rented Conker's Bad Fur Day. Even back then, I knew that was one of those "not your ordinary M-rated game" that would put the store more on high alert (considering they were really making sure everyone knew it's not for kids). I even actually told my dad during the car ride there about it & was still willing to cover for me. Yep, the clerk did bring it up too, telling my dad it's an M-rated game (and it was the only time it had happened when I rented M-rated game during those times). My dad just went with it, being aware of it & was probably ready to act like the rental was intended for him. I was remembering that while playing the game via Rare Replay recently, thinking, "He really did cover for me there". I don't know if me also deciding to rent the E-rated Mega Man Legends 2 on Playstation that time helped cover me too. I was just smiling, recalling that.
haha its funny how many people have mentioned renting this causing issues and yet other M rated games were no problem - I think its because of how much media coverage this M rating got
I still play DooM, Quake, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Forsaken and Turok 2 all the time. Thank you again Glenn!
That N64 is Bloody Awesome. :)
haha theres a link to the guy on Reddits page who made it
My top 3 M-rated N64 games:
3. Perfect Dark
2. Conker's Bad Fur Day
1. Resident Evil 2
(#4 Shadow Man)
I just looked at the ESRB as a way to tell me what games had all the violence/language. Just like the Explicit Lyrics Parental Advisory labels on music, before the ESRB.
it was almost like a "buy me" sing for teenagers right haha
@@n64glennplant Indeed, man
I had shadow man and the story is pretty fucked but the pc and dreamcast verisions are better. and the soundtrack was one of my favorites
@@moviemetalhead You sir have great tastes
This turned up in my recommendations and I’m glad it did. I enjoyed this video. I was a teenager when I got my n64 and it felt so cool and grown up and a little rebellious that I played quite a few of these titles. Feeling super nostalgic tonight and this hit that spot. Thanks!
And thanks for watching Steve - glad I could help scratch that nostalgic itch!
Cool video, Glenn. Didn’t know that the N64 had more mature rated games. I would say that my favorite M rated game was RE2. My parents really didn’t care about the ESRB ratings. They brought me whatever I asked for regardless of ratings but I can see why the ratings exist.
damn cool parents right there....or they didn't realise what the ESRB ratings were haha
Glenn, great video, thanks. I played pretty much every N64 game back in the day either through imported cartridges or a ‘development device’ acquired from Hong Kong. The only minor criticism I have about this video is that when you mention things like Doom64’s soundtrack and Turok 2’s cerebral bore, that you fade into the music at that point or show the weapon in action. That makes your commentary more joined up with what’s on screen and bumps up the production values further. Keep these videos coming!
I’m slightly constrained by copyright and RUclips community guidelines 👍
N64 Glenn Plant I did suspect as much and fully understand. Still great videos tho, the N64 had some seriously good experiences at the time some of which sadly haven’t aged well visually.
Conker's Bad Fur Day was a pretty badass game.
Even to this day I still can’t believe Nintendo let them ride with it.
@@n64glennplant Maybe because of the Great Mighty Poo lol
perhaps one of the weirdest characters ever made lol
@@n64glennplant I agree.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this I knew I was in for a treat! Couldn't click on it fast enough!
Haha thanks - I saw the custom console on reddit there’s a link to the guys page in the description 😬
Turok, Quake, and Perfect Dark were my jam back then. Doom 64 is one of my favorites now.
I like how you went in complete detail as to how some of them got the M rating.
Thanks Davil!
@@n64glennplant No Problem 👍
thank you so much, I had a game on the n64 when I was a little kid and I remember I was too scared to even start the first level. after all these years of trying to figure out what the game was called I have finally figured out what game it was. That came was Turok 2 Seeds Of Evil. I wouldn't have been able to figure out what the name of the game was if it wasn't for you N64 Glenn Plant, my childhood can live at peace thanks to you.
I loved Quake 2 on the N64. It introduced me to the series and I love it!
Hope you’ve played the pc versions since!
@@n64glennplant Oh of course. I have every Quake game on Steam, except for Quake Live, I played Quake Live before they put it on Steam and I never bothered to get it.
It is amazing how much Nintendo changed over the years probably for the better. I always think that the original Mortal Kombat game was a blessing a sacrificial lamb that helped end Nintendo's infamous censorship laws and gave birth to the video game age rating system. Without Mortal Kombat Nintendo would never had any mature rated games on there consoles today like on the Switch.
yeah like if you think about the SNES era and earlier could you ever imagine they'd even do something like eternal darkness years later
DOOM and Mortal Kombat ended that censorship, and created the esrb
I wonder if Howard Lincoln had his bowtie on too tight, like Mr. Mackey's tie?
I remember playing Carmagedon and Vigilante 8 for hours on end as a kid. Vehicular combat as a genre needs to make a comeback tbh
Yeah like platform games they seem to have died off these days haven’t they
Yes! Platformers too!
I must've been 4 or 5 when I saw my older cousins play games like Nightmare Creatures and Turok 2. I'll never forget the first time I saw the cerebral bore. I ran to the bathroom and puked out the sandwich I just ate!
haha for real? thats so funny
I love this channel, I am 28 yrs old, some of my favorite games are WWF attitude, Rush, f-zero, GoldenEye, WWF wrestlemania 2000, WWF no mercy, Mario kart, Mario Nintendo 64, Pokemon stadium, perfect dark ECT.
My father didn't care he would just buy me whatever game I wanted him to buy lol, I had mature games mixed with everyone games lol.
its cool to have grown up with parents like that, now I think if a parent bought a kid an adult game their social circle would be going nuts calling them bad parents etc
Most of the N64 games I grew up with were rated T or M.
theres a whole ton of classics in that category right
Those were the fun games to play at the time.
My thoughts and feelings are that I love hearing you go over games in broad categories like this. I do wonder if we'll be getting more like this, seeing as you essentially have b-roll for nearly the entire library at this point. Much thanks for the video, mister plant.
Thanks Nigel, yeah I also have some concept ideas on a list for videos I’ll be doing. Some are quite out there ideas but I’ll see how this video does and judge the next from there!
i remember having a n64 and looking for the M rating and being so hyped like i got a new piece of treasure and being ready for a adventure of gore but now n days it seems like any game that says "shit" gets a rating for mature
yeah too many pansies around these days at the ESRB haha
I remember going out once and buying turok. For some reason they didn't even question me buying it even though I looked nothing like a 15 year old at the time
Are you from Australia by any chance? The Australian rating board use MA15+ and you stated you were not 15 at the time.
Just a correction: Nightmare Creatures takes place in the year 1834 during London's second great fire in Westminster.
damn London, all their fires and sh1t haha
Quake was such a sick game. I hope ID remakes it imagine the gothic theme using today’s modern technology?
Major nostalgia here. As a teen and an adult, mature games are nothing but back in the N64 heyday I was a young lad with protective parents and I had to just pine over this stuff big time. Hilarious memories of having to try and spin a new game to mom with wild stories. Sometimes it miraculously worked like with Turok ("Mom it's called Dinosaur Hunter and I get to go hunting in real life with dad all the time and besides I'm mature right?!") and other times I just got a hell no and had to conspire a crazy black market with friends and older cousins to try and score something forbidden (Nightmare Creatures was my biggest score!). OR trying to sneak it out of the rental store and pretend it was something else, haha.
Although its all blase now, back when I was a boy my friends and I were totally hyped by the cool gore and guts. Way better than sneaking into an R-rated movie.
Haha see I was kinda lucky (or maybe not!) because my parents would let me watch 18 certificate movies and play any of these games no questions asked from around the age of 14. Still, I admire your hustle skills brah! 👍😬😂
My favorite M rated game was Turok 1. Loved how the blood splattered on the walls when you would shoot the enemy. Perfect dark had some really cool blood splatters as well. MK4 had some pretty cool finishing moves.
just want to say an an old school n64 gamer, I appreciate your videos, especially this one. you now have me doubting my memory on if I played some of these mature games. thank goodness for all the various n64 emulators that really make the textures and graphics much easier on the eyes, plus being able to use modern controllers (I hated the n64 joystick style compared to xbox or ps1 dual shock)
you should check out something like the retrofighters brawler control pad or the Hori mini pad if your budget allows - that might solve your n64 handling woes
Turok dinosaur Hunter was the only M rated game I had as a kid, until I got Conker's bad fur day behind my parents back. Love those games to this day.
haha how did you manage to get CBFD
Also, Resident Evil 2 on the N64 was such an amazing feat, that game alone was the proof that the N64 was so much more powerful than people tought it was. I didn´t had a N64 back in the day (financial problems), but I used to play with my cousin who had it, and on rental stores, and loved the system. As a Brazilian PC gamer back then, most of the games I had were pirated games, because the original ones were too expensive, so I experienced games like Duke Nukem 3D, Leisure Suit Larry and GTA at a tender age, hehe.
I hope you're subscribed to n64brasil channel !
The only real ESRB hassle I remember was when I had a girl I knew from school buy me Conker's Bad Fur Day because I was still just 16 and she was 17 and the local Wal-Mart were sticklers.
haha that's cool of her to have done that for you though right!
The depth and quality of your videos are amazing, thank you so much
no, thank you or watching as without people turning in I wouldn't be anything :)
So glad you at least showed some duke nuke zero hour. Hidden gem that not many like. My favorite game in the series to date. The humor and just badass game for its time. Not to mention the awesome cheats and multiplayer. Also the thanks for the showing some shadow man. Very underrated games way ahead of there time.
yeah who knows maybe ill get around to showing more of it again one day
N64 Glenn Plant looking forward to it
You're so good, I like your videos before pressing play
haha thank you noob - always appreciate the positive vibes this channels community offers always
I remember the guy at the video store warned me before renting Daikatana because of how bad it was not the violence , I still rented it.
growing up as a kid in the U.S. it was harder to get rated M games because the employees weren't allowed to sell them to minors unless an Adult was buying it for you so i didn't get the cool parents that would and i had to wait until i was 18 to buy them which is unfortunate
Dude that N64 in the thumbnail is sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There’s a link in the description to the Redditor who made it 😬
I certainly I played Duke Nukem, Doom and Quake.
cool games right
Turok 2. Dropped into an enormous level with absolutely no guidance on where you're supposed to be going or what you're supposed to be doing.
some of the levels were admittedly insane for that, lair of the blind ones for a start....
I would say WWF No Mercy (rated teen) is a better candidate for a mature rating that Descent. The majority of games I owned for the N64 were either teen or mature. I think this is why I never bought a gamecube because all of the ads I seen for it were of Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, and Zelda Wind Waker. Although those are all good games, I was an angsty teen and wanted a gritty and bloody atmosphere (and still haven't fully grown out of it).
One thing that Hexen 64 and Duke Nukem 64 offers which PC ports didn't at the time, is split-screen co-op! My wife and I beat both games together and had a blast. Oh and my favorite M rated game on the console is definitely Doom 64.
Random memory: In Mortal Kombat Trilogy sometimes Motaro will appear and say something like "Bring on Kintaro!". Since I liked Mortal Kombat 2 so much, I was trying to find Kintaro in the game. Only to find out recently that Kintaro and others were cut from the game because Midway wanted to go with a cheaper and smaller cartridge.
See I got GameCube day one and yeah I too was like when are all the mature games coming. By the time they started to show up I think I had also picked up an Xbox and was smashing the hell out of halo
@@n64glennplant Being a nintendo kid I actually stopped buying consoles! I went to PC for a while until my wife wanted a PS3 and we got that. Then I went back and got the consoles I missed out on. Definitely a good time being me as a gamer now, playing the games I missed :).
The only downside is some of the games you’ll want are astronomical in price 😔
@@n64glennplant Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil Remake, and Resident Evil Zero were exclusive M rated games released early in the GameCube's lifespan.
I played Conkers Bad Fur Day for the first time when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and was completely taken off guard 😂
Owned a few of these. Though I played most of them between friends and the video store. I remember playing Conker's Bad Fur Day in like second grade. lol I called my older sister a twat because I'd heard the great mighty poo say "Scat you little Twat" I didn't know what it mean't. She was 5 years older, she sure as shit did. Good times. My favorite part of Conker's Bad Fur Day was defiently the multiplayer. Cavemen vs Raptors, French refugee squirrels vs Nazi teddies, The free for all bank heist, ect, ect.
haha the nazi teddies were quite hilarious weren't they
I would never think that an M Rated game using comic sans as a font would see the light of day
Haha so true!
I remeber being about 10 years of age at the time i wanted Mortal Kombat 4 from CEX. It was just the cartridge (no box) in a glass cabinet.
I was with my little brother at the time. I pointed to the cashier the game i wanted. He almost let me buy it but pointed at the big red 18+ rating on the cartridge and laughed and stated I'm not allowed it.
So off i went next door to the clothes shop to get my mum to buy it. His face was a picture when he saw us laughing at the store entrance when my mum bought the same cartridge for us. Haha good memorys.
Awsome Channel by the way. 😁 👍
whoa I didn't realise that CEX had been around that long!
@@n64glennplant I think it was a very small chain back then. Was in Leeds. 👍
Please don’t leave us for too long again Mr Plant. Love your videos and you seem like a cool guy. I bought Fire Electric Pen bc of you and it turned into one of my favorite N64 games to play with my friend.
Thanks cheese - no plans to be leaving again aside from anything else happening in life that’s outside of my control
Nintendo Power themselves did not ban coverage of Conker. It was Nintendo who told NP not to cover it. They only gave press material to adult magazines, which is weird because no one really thinks about Nintendo and porn in the same space. There was a brief mention of the Conker's new direction in Nintendo Power, so you could see that the magazine WAS thinking about reviewing it, but were told to pull out at the last second. They still made a strategy guide though.
yes that's right, I often found that strange too considering how much of a big game it was going to be
Nightmare Creatures (especially the boxart) CREEPED me out when I was a kid. The game itself did too, but I definitely felt scared of what was ahead more than the actual content of the game. Lots of early-3D console staples like fog and low visibility in general.
yeah I think the fog worked really well in the victorian England setting for the same as it would have been life like hah
Mace the dark age had some really cool looking gore.
I recall as a child renting all of the M games and getting no flack from the local Blockbuster until I wanted to pick up Conker’s Bad Fur Day. The person behind the desk strongly warned my mum about the response of other parents to this game. We rented it anyway and I am glad that we did.
haha all it takes is one damn goody goody employee to ruin things hey
N64 Glenn Plant I forgive but I never forget, Glenn
Turok I think was my first real m rated FPS

Another great video Glenn! I really wish that you consider expanding your channel to other consoles as well, even if the N64 continues the main focus, that would be awesome!
ill see how this year pans out! :)
that was a cool subject for a video! maybe you can make one for N64 2D or sprite-base games or maybe how many use the D-pad :p
You read my mind sometimes - you’ve been a sub for far too long 😂 that idea is already in my list of ideas for 2019
What about Killer Instinct Gold?
That was T teen rating 👍
Oh ya it was Teen! Surprising since it had blood and finishers.
Yeah - I wonder how they got away with that?
I was at a Retro Store in Germany and they had it in the 18+ section
That’s because German is uber strict 😂 I think they loosened up slightly now though
I wish they would remake nightmare creatures
Great Video. In Rainbow Six Vegas on the xbox 360 you were able to put your own face on a character model via the xbox camera. It worked pretty good.
That’s very cool I didn’t know that although I remember an old tv show back in the day that showed you how to put a bitmap image on your quake 1 online on pc 😂
I just got a huge nostalgia hit seeing nightmare creatures. I played it a ton back in the day on my friends playstation.
Oh my god...this video takes me back to some amazing times growing up! I remember playing Duke Nukem w/my best friend. The "Duke-bots" were the best haha...they had the funniest AI ever. Ahh memories of middle school haha
what a time to be alive hey
Every time I see a video about PS1/N64 games I wonder... How my younger self used to play this games at 10-15 fps... Is truly beyond my current self lol
Haha I know right, how times have changed when everyone looses their minds if a game isn’t 60fps minimum
As a kid did not know that Doom 64 was any different from Doom on PC. Thus I never bothered to get it. Supposedly there was almost no marketing going on in Germany what made it even more difficult to get it correct. I would have loved it. Some weird policies regarding games decreased the overall probability of discovering an awesome game so severly, that I missed plenty of games, although I had and enjoyed Doom, Wolfenstein, Dark Forces .... I was not informed enough to play other M rated games, even though they were not any more violent or mentaly disturbing or whatever ... That is somehow really sad in retrospect.
Resident Evil 2 is my favorite game of all-time. I was an N64 guy at the time, was very disappointed the game didn't appear to be coming to coming to the console but then Capcom surprised me. Got it for Christmas 1999 and it took up a big part of my vacation week.
17.20 Neverintheless ;)
Awesome video once again Glenn but I do love these occasional slip ups. lol
its my own dialect, half Scottish half English :)
My top favorite M rated N64 games.
10:Quake 2
9:Conkers bad fur day
8:Biofreaks
7:Nightmare creatures
6:Turok dinosaur hunter
5:Duke Nukem 64
4:Doom 64
3:Perfect dark
2:Duke Nukem 0 hour
1:Resident evil which I Play religiously( metaphorically speaking)
The rating system never stopped me as a youth.
My parents would discuss certain games with me. And that was it.
And I never got questioned at a game store or Blockbuster.
back when blockbuster was the shiznit right!
@@n64glennplant yep.
Before the dark times.
Before the time of "it's not a late fee. It's a restocking fee".
My 2 favorite M rated games were definitely Duke Nukem: Zero Hour & Nightmare Creatures
both very fun games to play right
Hi Glenn! Always is a pleasure watch a video from your channel. I only follow 2 not spanish channel, Cinemassacre (a.k.a. the angry videogame nerd) and yours. keep the good job!!
that's some big praise thank you - who knows maybe one day someone will do Spanish translations :)
Wow Midway and Rare made some of the best games for N64, to bad time didn't treat them well
What really killed the dinosaurs? A man in a car.
Forsaken is one of the most fun multiplayer experiences I had on the 64! One you get the controls it’s so freaking fun
And the remaster on modern is awesome
Too
@@n64glennplant I may have to check that out
Thanks for this amazing video! Yet more excellent content.
I quite like Q64...the music is great, and it is a great easy way to play it these days without jumping through hoops as windows 7+ requires for old games. It is definitely not flawless however and one as disappointed after playing Doom 64 that it wasn't on that level.
You're obviously younger than me Glenn. I was old enough I think for most of these games in Canada!
im 34 now....how the years are flying by now haha
Loved the video. One game I had especially high hopes for was shadow man. I loved the beginning part in the bayou, aesthetically speaking. But then I felt most of the other levels/areas looked too much alike. And when you have a Metroidvania type game of revisiting old places and always going back and forth, it’s important to have distinct areas where to make the game more enjoyable. You look at Ocarina of Time, it’s divided in Hyrule w desert, lake, fire/mountains, etc. here, I got sick of the color palette just dark brown and red and game just became very aesthetically displeasing. The environment it created wasn’t bad but when there are so many other games to be played, it just got very repetitive fairly quickly. But solid video throughout as always!
yeah I know what you mean, with the whole game pretty much having an evil style setting it can become mega confusing which is why they gave a map in the box but I dont think many kids would have been able to work that out
After seeing Duke 3d on the N64, it would have been nice to get Blood and Shadow Warrior at the time.
Playing multiplayer Duke 3D was fun though. Something I never got to experience on PC as I didn't have the internet until after 1997.
You can still play Duke Nukem on Sega Saturn online to this day 😂
One of the best videos on RUclips.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Conkers Bad Fur Day is my favorite game to this day and i was like 6 when i played it.
I definitely was stopped from getting my hands on certain N64 games because of the rating- as well as the genre. It wasn't just the enforcement of sales policy regarding M-rated games by videogame stores, it was also the fact that my parents were keenly aware of ESRB ratings, and wouldn't allow me to own M-rated games, but with only a few, very rare exceptions. They also didn't permit me to play first-person shooters, regardless of the rating, so I didn't play some of my favorite games on the system until I was an adult. That said, I think Duke Nukem: Zero Hour and Perfect Dark are among my favorite games on the system to carry the rating. I feel like Zero Hour made up for the heavy censorship of Duke Nukem 64.
I had Doom 64, Turok 1 and 2, Mortal Kombat Trilogy and 4, Duke Nukem 64, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. I enjoyed them all.
did you never fancy Turok 3?
N64 Glenn Plant I rented it, but I couldn’t afford to buy it. I also rented Hexen, War Gods, and the South Park FPS. I did manage to track down the N64 version of Resident Evil 2.
im really looking forward the new RE 2 on xbox this month, ill probably be streaming it on launch day
MACE: The Dark Age looks like what the creators of Eternal Champions wanted to do on the Sega Saturn, but Sega of Japan cancelled the series because they thought it would confuse gamers to have two fighting franchises at the time (Virtua Fighter and Eternal Champions).
really fantastic upload and thanks for showing off so many titles i’ve been curious about seeing
like Bio FREAKS or Doom 64 which i heard about for years since i was a small child but never saw or played
also this video really had me thinking about how many brutal death metal bands have referenced M rated n64 games... like i really doubt you or anyone here is into metal that much, but there is a Scottish band called Cerebral Bore (named after the weapon in Turok) and there’s also another band called Ineffable Demise where the entire theme of the band (even the inspiration for their album cover and sound samples) are all taken from Shadow Man.
but yeah excellent video! and if you can tolerate metal in the slightest i would heavily recommend checking out both those bands. gonna go watch your review for Shadow Man now and enjoy the nostalgia :))
Haha yeah I’ve heard of cerebral bore before!!! 😂😂😂
i’ve seen em live
great fuckin band!
keep up the content bro
The M rated game I grew up with? Turok Dinosaur Hunter. If I had to make a reboot for any series, it would be Turok!
Did you like the recent remasters?
N64 Glenn Plant the only thing I didn’t like is that the Switch port for SoE’s remaster doesn’t have multiplayer
Favorite M-rated game is /EASILY/ Perfect Dark 64. That game was the single most excited I've ever been for a release. Months of build up, months of loving that game. It was absolutely the best of the M-rated games
did you ever get around to playing PE Zero?
@@n64glennplant I did. And it's one of my biggest personal disappointments in video gaming.
If Perfect Dark Zero was released on the N64 during the N64 era, where N64 game mechanics were the norm, then I think it would have been great. But Perfect Dark Zero was released about 6 years too late, with outdated mechanics that just made it incredibly mediocre.
I've even gone back and tried to replay Perfect Dark Zero on the Rare Replay Collection ass recently as last week. But after the huge amount of Perfect Dark XBL I've played in the recent little while, Zero just was reinforced as a mediocre gaming experience. The multiplayer on Zero was muddied and lacking, the maps were unimpressive and rather dull, and the gun selection just felt... cliched I suppose is the best word for it. The single player story was annoying, Joanna Dark's character was grating, and the level layouts were just cover-to-cover shoot-fests.
Perfect Dark 64, most excitement I've ever felt for a video game in my life. Perfect Dark Zero, most disappointment I've ever felt for a video game in my life.
There's a sense of irony to that I believe.
Shadowman is a masterpiece and I'm glad its on Steam in 2021. Did Perfect Dark drop the face add feature due to Columbine?
Yup
Damn those clips from Turok REALLY took me back!
It is always funny to look at old M rated games. Because you wonder, was it really that damaging to see all these low-poly gore and violence?
And I remember how your cousin (?) got you Mario 64 in exchange for your Doom 64 copy. From a 6 years old kid. :)
haha yeah that was my sister getting it from the kids she babysat who were so young
When I was a kid, I had a gift card to Blockbuster and I did everything I could to convince my dad to let me buy Conket's Bad Fur Day. He didn't budge and I ended up spending the gift card on a VHS copy of The Rugrats Movie :T
oh dear - although I too loved rugrats as a kid
Sometimes feels weird looking back at games of this time and wonder where most of these series went.
ill have to do a series like this on some of them no doubt!
M for Mature was 19+ back in the 90's
Depends on where in the world you live ✌️
This brought back a lot of memories. Biofreaks was so much fun! Thanks for introducing me to shadow man. Can't believe I've never heard of it after over 20 years.
They recently remastered it and is available on Steam.
Keep it up Glenn. Love your videos. All of them!
thanks Rocky!
The M rated games I played back then were Perfect Dark, Turok 2 and Quake. Well, those are the ones I remember. Good Times.
they are all classics my friend, such cool memories also with those titles
Conkers Bad Fur Day is hands down a top 5 game for N64
Nice video Glenn! I enjoyed mk4 back in the day, but now... it's too hard to play around three or four fights, the gameplay feels tough, the rooster is strange and the fatalities are so dumb. I like the stage elements and weapon concept though :P
Yeah the weapons were very cool I felt although sometimes fiddly to draw in the head of battle! 🗡
