So who's looking forward to the N64 Mini Classic console and do you think any of these RARE games will end up on it? what do you think the top 5 or top 10 RAREWARE games of all time are? Any Rare NES or SNES games which you'd have liked to have been ported to the Nintendo 64?

Jet Force Gemini was my favorite N64 game, period. I personally didn't have a problem with the controls, and loved the atmosphere of the game. Being able to go back to previous areas with different characters and new abilities really gave the game a sense of exploration. Yes, having to find every. last. tribal. at the end was a bit of a grind, but the gameplay and exploration more than made up for it in my book. If there was ever a sequel I would like to see, it would be Jet Force Gemini 2.

@@Bladerunner-yd5lk You can't blame people for wanting to attach a popular existing IP to a new one as there have been plenty of successful games that have achieved such things. Star Fox Adventures was not a bad title, but there were certainly a few last minute additions that weren't necessary in the game or at least weren't executed as well as they could have been. What hurt Rare the most out of the wealth of things that happened back then was both Rares and Nintendo's arrogance perhaps, both parties feeling that they didn't need each other as much as they thought back then.

Thank you so much for bringing us this video on the complete list of RARE games on the N64.
When I was a young teenager during the late 90s, I finally got enough money to get my first console after so many years having to play Nintendo consoles at my friend's and cousin's houses during the NES and SNES console era. (Parents never got me any Nintendo console, they only brought me a cheap Atari 2600 Junior and a Nintendo GameBoy because those were cheaper. Though one of those GameBoy Games was Donkey Kong Land 2 that was a port of one of the best RARE games from the SNES during the GameBoy's life, all I knew at the time was Nintendo and Atari and SEGA as those were the only games that my friends and cousins's had)
When I finally was old enough to earn a video game console, instead of getting a PlayStation I only had enough money for one console so I chose the N64 since I really enjoyed the Mario games.
RARE was one of those companies I found out about when I realized that they made the Donkey Kong Country series on the SNES and GameBoy ports as Donkey Kong Land.
RARE on the N64 was RAREWARE at their best and while I loved their games, didn't get all of their games but I certainly got at least 6 of those RAREWARE games (Killer Instinct Gold, Donkey Kong 64, Jet Force Gemini, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, was not able to get used to FPS shooters so I didn't pick up these two famous ones)
Sure didn't have enough money to get all of the RARE games but this was during a time when I really had to save up harder for these games where I could only get one N64 game in every 3 months between school holidays.
I also read many 64 and N64 Magazines from the UK and had all the information I needed to keep track of which games were coming out and of course, RAREWARE games were amazing to look back on those magazines as well as reading about the potential of RARE on the Nintendo GameCube, Dinosaur Planet that eventually became StarFox Adventures would be the final RARE game they made for Nintendo before being sold to Microsoft in 2002 on the day after SFA was released as the contracts were signed during the final few months of that game's development.
It was a bitter blow for me knowing it meant that RARE was never able to make any more games on a Nintendo console and while I did get an XBox360 to play Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero, it was disappointing when it dawned on me when Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts was released, I found it to be not the same Banjo Kazooie I wanted to play and ended up trading the game in a month after release. It was at that point I felt that RARE was being screwed over by Microsoft.
Looking back on it, I think many American Publishers never really let their developers have any real freedom or that RAREWARE were lucky to have Nintendo on their side when it comes to giving them freedom to create their own IP while also handling Nintendo's own IPs. That freedom was of course shown with Conker's Bad Fur Day.
While Dinosaur Planet was supposed to be RARE's final N64 game, I still enjoyed playing the lone game on the GameCube that we got from RARE.
But the biggest pill to swallow is what would happen afterwards as many RAREWARE games never appeared on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console and even if there was going to be an N64 Classic, it will NEVER have those RAREWARE games that made the system a classic console. Mostly due to the Microsoft issue.
Goldeneye has both Microsoft issue and Activision that owns the James Bond License for Video Games.
And that is perhaps the most saddest story ever, the only way to enjoy those classic games today is either you were born back in the day when these games were avaliable and brought them, or you need an XBox One and buy RARE Replay as well as Killer Instinct on the system to get anywhere close to the classic RARE of the past.

I was much too young to really follow or care about which studio did what back in the 90s. But Rare kinda changed that: I figured out pretty quick that the floating blue and gold 'R' that popped up when you flipped the switch usually meant that a game was going to be the cream of the crop.

Excellent video. I've always loved rare games, and when I was in my teens, I was practically obsessed w any title that was from Rare. My favorite would have to be Banjo Kazooie (I didn't try Banjo Tooie until years later, and also loved it). The thing I loved about rare games--other than the fact that they were very good at what they did--was the charm and beautiful, vibrant colors their games exhibited. You look at Banjo Kazooie, or Diddy Kong Racing (and compared to Super Mario 64 and Mario kart 64, respectively), the games are just so much more colorful and vibrant. Granted, Rare took a lot of cues from those games, but they took them and made them so much better. The one criticism I have of Rare is that they made their games sometimes irrationally difficult (I'm not talking about Battletoads, but the idiotic requirement to effectively 100% the JEt Force Gemini game to reach the boss). I just don't understand how someone didn't say, "hey, this is kind of stupid, to require the player to save every last one of them" in order to face the boss. Even Perfect Dark, on easy mode, is fairly challenging. Again, you have 3 game modes, if you're going to have an "easy" mode (I think it was called agent), then make it easy, since you have a Normal mode and a hard mode as well. But other than that, what an insanely successful company. Unfortunately, after Microsoft bought Nintendo's share (and became majority holders), company produced mostly unmemorable titles (including the god awful Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts). Although some of the team from Rare created Time Splitter series (which was fairly solid), as well as Yooka Laylee, so hopefully there's still some gems to come from the old guys.

I didn't really catch onto the name Rareware, until Banjo Tooie came out and I saw a N64 Magazine in an Australian newsagent. That magazine made me realise how important Rare was important to the N64. So you can imagine how I felt after that when...sigh, yeah, 'that' happened. If only they mostly stuck around for the GameCube.

DK64 just needs a proper analog stick camera and no more camera getting stuck on surfaces and I will consider it the best game on the N64. Still want a remaster or something of it. I still like the tag barrel mechanic because it feels like each Kong has their own adventure, like a Scooby-Doo premise, and their actions influence other Kongs' adventures. It's fun and intuitive. Yeah, it's grindy, but not every collectible is required and it's SUPER lenient with what you need. It's probably got some of the most fun glitches and tricks too, like STS and the Moonkick. 10/10 from me.

Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie were one of my most favourite games. Goldeneye was one of the first ever games I got with my N64.
Jet Force Gemini.... I did enjoy that game buuut I got up to a certain point in the game where I got REALLY stuck and couldn't progress at all in the game. It felt like the game was bugged and broken. I got up to the part where I needed to get all the spaceship parts, and I had to get the last piece from this bear on some planet who refused to give me the last piece I needed to progress the game. He was basically like _"Go save the Tribals from each world and come back again"_ I did all of that, went back and still didn't give me the item. I went to each world individually saving them all and I got nothing from it. I pretty much ended up giving up on trying to finish the game at that point cuz I didn't even know what to do.
I had a lot of difficult times playing through Jet Force Gemini, like beating particular bosses, mini-games, etc... The one boss that got me really pissed off as a kid was the 3 Giant Robo Mantises, that boss fight was particularly unfair and stupid, no matter how hard I tried. I'd get close to beating them, and then suddenly they hit me with something that finishes me off instead, and you have to be aware of what all 3 of them are doing at once in order to dodge their attacks. I bet now that I'm older I could probably do it no problem now. A lot of the bosses are creepy and disgusting looking.

I personally believe Nintendo had serious doubts about Rare going forward when a lot of key people left in the early 2000s - all brought to a head when the Stamper brothers announced their retirement. Companies evolve as people come and go, and Nintendo was seeing an evolution in a direction that wasn't appealing to them. They sold high on Rare - and made the right choice.

For me, the only way they could have improved DK64 is by making it a little bit harder to erase save files.
When I was 12 or maybe 13 years old I had a completely finished save 1 file, everything unlocked and collected. I was proud. Then I decided to do it all over again on save 2.
A week or so went by, I came home from school, and found save 1 erased. It was my little brother, 3 or 4 years old who did it. At the time, he couldn't read since he hadn't started school yet.
The poor guy was stressing out and hiding all day waiting for me to come home and discover his mistake.
I was really mad, 70 or more hours... just gone with one explosive orange.

Rare was doing a killing on the N64, amazing games. Though, one thing to note is that in their desire to push the platform beyong it's limitations, some of the games had choppy framerates. But other than that, they had a stellar output and the disappointment was pretty big when they got bought by MS in 2002 and it became clear that we won't be seeing their great games on NGC anymore. The Xbox/Xbox 360/Xbox One games they made weren't bad either, but something got lost in the transition - it was clear to me the games weren't *as* good anymore.

Here's a detail that you may have never heard for GoldenEye.
The multiplayer was literally slapped on at the last minute before the game went out to retailers. In fact, it wasn't even suppose to be in the game in the first place, it was made for the development team to screw around with until it shipped out. They had so much fun with it they included it in the final product.
Yep, a last minute addition became the prime reason why it's one of the best video game of all time.
Also, I believe Rareware nailed DK64. It's one of the best examples of moving a side scroller into the 3D realm, like Mario 64 was. Personally I enjoy it more than Mario 64, but I can say that there are issues that make Mario 64 the better product in comparison.

Deal ;) All that great work on the n64 and how do Nintendo repay them? By murdering the game that might've given Ocarina a run for its money. It's a damn shame.

I know there’s Rare Replay where they have Conker’s Bad Fur Day on the Xbox One, But for nostalgic sake I still like to play it on the N64.

Yeah and Xbox got the censored Conker so it makes sense to play n64😬

Since Microsoft and Nintendo are working together we might see some old characters come back to Nintendo like Banjo Kazooie or killer instinct characters in smash bros

11:35 damn… dude was really getting into smacking that witches @ss… 🤣 I wonder if the director prompted him to do that or was it just improv on his behalf? Either way it’s kind of weird 😆 I can’t say I’m too bummed over that show failing to come to the states lol
On another note, awesome video man! (as always) your content is top notch, and it’s really cool that you show so much love for the N64.. especially since not many other gaming channels shine much of a light on the system. Such an amazing console, with so many awesome games. So much nostalgia! Not sure how old you are but I’m 34, so the N64 played a major role in my youth and I have it to thank for tons of great memories! I’d say my fondest memories when it comes to gaming can be attributed to the SNES, Genesis, and N64… Ps1 was great too. I’ve had pretty much all of the systems from turbo graphics and onward.. but the N64 was one of the all time greats! Anyway, I apologize for rambling on.. and again, thanks for all of the awesome content man!

Rareware should never ever have been allowed to have been bought up by Microsoft. Rare and Nintendo were a perfect match.

My choice for a rare modern day hd remake would have to be goldeneye. Dual analog controls and online multiplayer would be great imho.
Rare on the n64 without a doubt is my favourite gaming partnership.
