    The ability to plug in 4 controllers right from jump was such a game changer. I have so many great memories of staying up all night playing Goldeneye and all of those wrestling games! Gotta agree with Mike about Mario Kart, too - I love the SNES version!

    Loved the N64! Zelda Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Turok 2 Seeds of Evil, Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Wave Race, Shadows of the Empire, NFL Blitz, Smash Bros! Man, what a blast corps ;)

    I recently got my N64 modded with the UltraHDMI and I love replaying GoldenEye on it. It's such a different FPS experience compared to today's shooters. There's so much variety to the missions it means the game never feels stale.
    I also really love how the AI is always doing different things and is really unpredictable (like flanking or lobbing grenades or running to trigger an alarm for reinforcements). It means you're always having to adjust and react to them rather than just memorising levels.
    Personally I think the PS1/N64/Saturn era is the most evenly matched generation when it comes to classics. There are games I love on all three systems and I really can't pick a favourite between them, I love them all equally and still have all three hooked up.

      Garbage framerates and controls is what made me a PC gamer. The NES and SNES controlled almost perfectly, super low latency sprite hardware, literally racing the beam. The N64 and PS1 controlled like wrestling in treacle.

    Perfect Dark isn't as good as Goldeneye? Lmfao. Customizable bots, MUCH better weapons and equally memorable music. Oh and many more game modes, character customization, ranks, alternate firing modes for every gun, a firing range with challenges, and so much more.

      Even the guards were just as funny and charming as in "GoldenEye 007", they still did hilarious things and also had funny one-liners as well.
      A lot of FPS games take themselves overly seriously, but "Perfect Dark" still had that wonderful British humour from "GoldenEye 007" intact, like Elvis the alien for example. xD

    • @BanjoBillWY
      @BanjoBillWY 7 лет назад

      Perfect dark had better multi-player. That's all.

    • @Peter_1986

      +Banjo Bill
      "Perfect Dark" had two functions for most weapons, more detailed instructions for the mission objectives, quicker access to the Pause menu, and you could open a quick menu for several of the weapons and items by holding the A button.
      All those things are undeniable improvements, because they all ADDED something beneficial without hurting any other aspects in any way, which by definition is an improvement.
      It also had more intelligent enemies, and the music was at least as awesome.

    I had both the PS1 & N64 as a kid, they are both great. It's probably strictly nostalgic and memories, but there's something just more special to me with the N64. Like, I'd be totally down to play it but when it comes to the PS1, I'd have the attitude, "Why, when I have a PS4?" If that makes sense.

    WWF Wrestlemania 2000, No Mercy & WCW vs NWO Revenge were easily some of the best wrestling games during the era.
    The 4 player mulit-player and the simple pick up and play controls were always fun especially when you got 4 players together. Given how there was so many different match types and wrestlers to choose from (Along with Created Wrestlers) You had such variety.
    Wrestling games today are still being compared to No Mercy!

    N64's legacy lives on with the abundance of remixes of game musics from the N64. A lot of N64 games had great music, my favorite is Mystical ninja starring Goemon 2 - Ryugu Castle (also known as Palace of the Sea Goddess, Life on Turtle (Part 2). The N64 midi is pretty good to listen still.

      @retrosoul8770 7 лет назад +4

      No doubt about it, the Genesis as well. 60 fps 2D graphics with smooth animation and colorful hand drawn art styles? Absolutely! You can say the same from 2D games from the 5th generation as well.

    • @Games_and_Music
      @Games_and_Music 7 лет назад +1

      That is how i generally look and feel back on consoles, it is a major reason why i never got into the NES, it had really poor colorschemes a lot of times, i rather preferred my snotty GameBoy games instead.
      The lack of color in GameBoy games actually enhanced it for me, to imagine what they would look like in color, and the NES versions generally barfed all over that imagination.
      The N64 kinda suffered the same dullness of graphics, which the SNES didnt have as much, but yeah i would agree that the MegaDrive was really smooth and crisp.

    One of the tough things about doing a N64 classic is that a lot of the great N64 titles were 2nd party done by Rare who is now owned by Microsoft. So it's going to be a lot tougher to get those on it as opposed to the Konami and Capcom titles on the NES & SNES classic systems.

    Dear Mike and Ryan, I feel you did Perfect Dark a bit of a disservice there: Perfect Dark is a far superior game than Goldeneye in pretty much ever way with better graphics, AI, multiplayer, story, missions, objectives, etc. etc. True, it did push the capabilities of the console a bit much at times but it's a truly awesome game. So great that it was released in HD on Xbox live a few years back.I'm not sure if you know much about it but Rare were originally going to produce the game for Tomorrow Never Dies but they declined because they felt too limited with Goldeneye and wanted to come up with their own story and characters to enable them more creative freedom. However they kept a lot of the things from Goldeneye including weapons (which you could unlock) and some of the multiplayer levels including facility, complex and temple.I would love to see you do a play through of both games so that you can really compare the difference, also it would be great to see you do a four player multiplayer comparison with James and some of the other cinemassacre regulars.Thanks for listening :)P.S. you should also definitely have a go at playing Team Buddies on PS1 if you can get it - it's quite a rare game, but fantastic.

    I remember plenty of people using "Xbox" as a catch-all term for video games during the late 6th to 7th gen of consoles. It didn't die out during the age of the Nintendo 64. Microsoft dominated the late 6th gen and early-mid 7th gen of consoles with the Xbox and Xbox 360, which was probably due to Xbox Live becoming hugely popular. So yeah, when I was in my teens back then, plenty of people used "Xbox" as a catch-all term for video games, especially parents.

    Perfect Dark and how complex the game is on a campaign and multiplayer scale as well as the graphics are some of the best on the system EVER. The dynamic lighting combined with shadows and move-able objects within levels...wow that blew my mind when I was 13...never saw an FPS that came close to detail...not to mention with the expansion pack the ability to play it on wide screen HD tvs before they were even main stream is amazing. The game plays like a current day game on my 55inch 1080p UltraHDMI modded N64. Its even better when you upgrade the N64 joystick to the Gamecube bowl style joystick and then play the game using 2 controlers as if you had 2 analog sticks...yup then your in retro FPS heaven!

Not the greatest story but has some cool mechanics I haven't seen before

    Couldn't disagree more about Quest 64 and Perfect Dark. The former, while generic, was a decent RPG for the N64's library. It had some merit. The latter? Holy crap, that game is massively superior to Goldeneye 007 in nearly every way. I think people just dismiss Perfect Dark because it was late in the N64's life cycle. And to be fair it was nowhere near as memorable as Goldeneye 007.

    its apples and oranges between the games, i love the crash series on ps1 and love mario 64 on n64, i love ctr on ps1 but prefer mario kart on n64, goldeneye was the best game to have for multiplayer but metal gear solid and the resident evil games were the best games to have for single player. they both had great games but i do think nothing on n64 was as good as metal gear solid on ps1 for that time in gaming, metal gear and resident evil changed the way people looked and thought about games, metal gear was crazy for its time. id have to give the nod to the ps1 over the n64 just for that game alone.

    • @CarInMyAss
      @CarInMyAss 7 лет назад +1

      As much as I was a Nintendo Fanboy you can't argue that metal gear and rezendeevil didn't change gaming completely. Even Silent Hill on PlayStation 1, I didn't like it as much as I fell in love with Silent Hill 2 but it did raise the bar and set a standard for a horror game. I can still remember being legit scared from the Silent Hill 2 playing it alone in the dark stoned when I was 17

    Thank you Mike for addressing why every Mario Party sucks after number seven. Everybody together in the same vehicle is just catering to how kids don't want to directly compete with each other on those games. There's literally no competition in the new ones. My four-year-old nephew can play as well as me or my 11 year old son almost in the new ones where as in number 6 it's not even close

    • @CarInMyAss
      @CarInMyAss 7 лет назад +1

      Just to clarify not that I'm trying to beat up on a little kid but a four year old that's not particularly good at video games should not be able to keep up with somebody who's played an entire series and is good at it. That just means they homogenize the games

    • @CarInMyAss
      @CarInMyAss 7 лет назад

      And thank you for mentioning gauntlet. Until it came out on Dreamcast this game was amazing. it sucks to play this game without four players if you have your friends over. Don't get me wrong I played it by myself all the way through a bunch but when you have more than one friend over it's one of the best games to have. And until Dreamcast this was one of my favorite four-player games for a long time
