Has he really been getting into games? Give me a list of game credits to his resume. What games has he made either through a video game company or a self published title? 😉
I think there is a joke with Cutman being able to be killed by Gutsman's power. Rock beats sissors... like rock, paper sissors. There is some interview with developers that I had read where they talk about that being their initial idea of how megaman was going to work (one enemies power being effective against another particular enemy) and how rock, paper, sissors being their inspiration. Though to me, rock beating sissors was the only obvious one to me in the series... Later on it's like, "Does the tiger claw beat the ninja dude or was it the pharaoh dude?!?" lol
Ryan is trying to educate Mike with video game history by saying stuff like: "It was very revolutionary how the NES was designed with the PPU." But Mike is probably only thinking: "Haha....he said PeePee."
"M" stands for "Magnet Beam" Also, here's what happened at the end: after the Wily Machine exploded, you got hit by the last shot that was still active and on the screen. This hit knocked you backwards toward the left edge of the screen. All the lag going on due to the many sprites on screen at the time (there were some extra copies of the Elec Beam still lingering around) confused the hell out of the game engine, and as a result the game had Mega Man exit back to the previous room. Then, even though controls were taken away from you (as usual when you beat Wily) the ending cutscene couldn't proceed because you were in the wrong room and the game just essentially entered an endless loop and softlocked.
I remember beating the yellow devil once without taking damage, I felt like I was the shit. Games like this really left you feeling accomplished when you made progress that is something that is really missing from current games.
I do enjoy these episodes with Ryan, he brings a different kind of enthusiasm and knowledge than the people we're used to and it's nice to have an alternative now and then.
As someone who is trying to learn how to program retro style videogames (using Pico-8) and is interested in how video games actually work, it is refreshing to hear Ryan talk about the technical aspects like graphical limitations and especially how the "pause trick" may have caused the purgatory glitch at the end.
Lol, I sure like hearing how these 2 speak so highly of Disney's Star Wars. Oooohh we were all so naive, when we thought the series was headed in a positive direction....Then we actually saw The Last Jedi...
Manami Matsumae, a female music composer and former member of the all-female Capcom's Sound Team did all the music for this game (including its iconic "Game Start" jingle that has been used in each game of the series afterwards). She also did the music for U.N. Squadron, MERCS, Mega Man 8, 9 and some of Shovel Knight.
Once Ryan actually builds a game from the ground up in the NES development environment then I'll respect his chops. Otherwise he comes off like a charlatan (aka wannabe developer)
? Knowledge is knowledge dude. He doesn't have to be a developer to know about the console, you know? You, me, everybody can learn these things and that's fine.
LuckyDT Everyone is passionate about game development until they actually take 1 or 2 computer science courses and then quit out because they can't hack it. I'll be a believer of his passion once he can work his way through the trenches of a computer science degree or other comparable engineering oriented tech curriculum or that he demonstrates that he has the discipline and technical chops to develop a game from start to finish on his own and publish it (ie his own game or working for a game dev company).
Yes, the pause trick DID cause the game to freeze at the end (I was actually watching this on pins and needles wondering if that was going to happen.) This happened to me back in the day and I actually called the Gameplay Counselors and they had the same thing happen to them when using the pause trick on Wily. What you have to do is use the pause trick until Wily's energy is low enough where one more hit will finish him, then shoot him with one more Elecman beam WITHOUT using the pause trick then he'll be done (I don't say die because Wily is worse than Rasputin, no matter what you do to him he never dies, LOL.) Hope that answers the question.
Ryan I also had my NES hooked up with RF all throughout my childhood. Even when hooking it up to a VCR with AV inputs at my grandmother's house I still used RF because we didn't know AV was better, didn't care either.
Yeah, Ryan is fucking hyped :D Do NOT listen to haters, Ryan, you are fucking awesome, so, Mike, more videos with him :) Also with James :D Much love from Serbia
So many people troll the comments when Ryan is in a video and I have no idea why. I mean, of course we're all mostly here for James and Mike, but Ryan's still 100% tolerable.
The "M" stands for Magnet Beam. You can use the magnet beam to cross those huge gaps in Ice Man's stage as well. Just use the beam, make a long stretch to walk on, and before it runs out, make another long one and jump onto it... repeat to cross the gaps.
Thank you for uploading in 60fps. It makes a big difference. A lot of people don't realize it but most NES games ran 60fps natively. I hope Cinemassacre uploads everything in 60fps in the future.
Yeah I really like that Ryan has technical knowledge while Mike has the history and experience of actually playing. It's actually a great pairing. Also as someone that usually knows a lot about technical stuff, there is a lot of things I didn't know about the NES era, so Ryan has said some extremely interesting things.
Ryan really has put out some great facts in the videos I've been watching lately. Like In the turtles arcade video when he talks about the sprites and scanlines. Bravo Ryan. Keep up the good work dude.
He should have some videos on his own, so that he could talk more freely about it. There are sometimes too many interruptions in these videos for him to finish his stories.
Mega Man is the REAL DEAL. People just couldn't handle its difficulty, but the controls are tight. Only acceptable pause cheat is for Yellow Devil, not Wily and others! :P
Personally for me the original Megaman was the best of the entire series. The best robot masters, awesome music, and a real fun time no matter how you look at it.
People who's life is about gaming and they don't immediately know the order of boss weaknesses for this game? It took me a few seconds, but I still pieced it together from memory.
I believe what happened at the end was that wily's attack sphere thing (I honestly don't know what it was called) hit you while Dr. Wily was still jumping out of his machine, and the knock-back of the attack sent Megaman behind the door that was used to enter the final boss room, and that made the game think that you went through a door. (This is partially backed up by the weapon energy that spawned to the left moved for a bit before becoming stationary.)
When I was a kid, I considered it a matter of pride to be able to beat this game without using tricks. Really fun to watch you guys play, but it would have been nice to see you beat it without using tricks.
I think I know what happened at the end : so you killed the final boss, but there was this white ball who hitted you after wily was defeated, making megaman step back and hit the door that was just here. so the game thought megaman was opening the door, then the game tried to load the map, and crashed. a little like what it can happen on air man stage in megaman 2.
i used to not like ryan that much but since ive been watching these videos ive come to respect him a great a deal...vast knowledge of technical aspects.....very cool dude.
I'm really starting to enjoy these Mike and Ryan video's a lot as much if not more than James and Mike. I think Mike and Ryan together are hilarious and always make me laugh at least once per episode but even more I like Ryan's knowledge on the technical aspects video games and the NES. Keep it up guys and fuck the haters.
This game is probably my earliest video game memory. I grew up with a genesis but a friend of mine had an NES (he lived like 10 blocks from me) and we played this game way back in like 1993(i was in preschool). Still such a hard game especially if you try beating the bosses with buster only. I liked megaman powered up(except for the incredible and too much Cuteness that plagued the game) and it's such a shame that capcom has more or less stopped putting out megaman tiles. I would like to see more series and remakes
Boss appears, game suddenly appears to get a seizure and totally glich out, the guys stay calm as fuck. Boss explodes, Mike is like: Oh, that was the pause trick, didn't you know that?
I love the NES 6502 and used to play with assembly code all of the time. I also love writing corruptors for games. I had a fully functioning corruptor written with 30+ different types of corruptions you could do on NES and SNES just modifying the machine language, but I lost it in one of my reformats and didn't cloud save it.
Honestly, my favorite Megaman game is the PSP remake of this game. The feature that allowed ya to make n share yer own levels was priceless. The gameplay is timeless.
I think a big part of the target market for the NES classic were people who weren't necessarily into gaming but whom remember the NES from their childhood. Many of them probably aren't in the same demographic that buy modern systems or things like the virtual console.
one of the greatest games ever made! its a goddamn shame that Capcom has NOTHING planned for MM's 30th anniversary. i would LOVE to see you guys play MM4 or 5.
I've played this game so much over the years I can get to Dr Wily without dying once! Love this game despite it's noticeable flaws. Mega Man 2 was probably the best #2 game in a series on the NES. Mario, CastleVania, Zelda, they all tried doing something different and a lot of people hated the changes. Capcom took the proven formula of Mega Man 1 and improved on it in the sequel.
Many people say that this is the Hardest in the Mega Man series. It's hard to agree since this (at the time) is my only "Weekend Game". Bought it on Saturday, didn't know the order, then after 7 hours on a really slow Sunday I beat it. It might also help that I beat Mega Man 2 before 1. Mega Man 2 I think took several months for me.
None of the mega man games are hard. Maybe doing things like no hit runs or something, but the games themselves are pretty tame. Infinite continues, password system, boss weaknesses, etc.
Great game still. I remember renting it from the long since closed local movie rental store and beating it in a couple days. Not as memorable as the later mega man games but still fun
I love mega man since I was a kid. Almost had every game. But the one I had played most of them all is actually mega man 1. Not saying is the best. But there is something about it I really enjoy.
I really like how Ryan has been getting into games and has been learning a lot of facts to go along with Mike's playing and his nostalgia.
Has he really been getting into games? Give me a list of game credits to his resume. What games has he made either through a video game company or a self published title? 😉
axv4745 jesus your a fucking dumbass aren't ya
DinoChook Productions Which do you like better Taco Bell or Chipotle?
"Why do you know all that shit"
SkipperOT Studios That's what Mike Matei asked Ryan right ?
I used to create my own mega man enemies and draw them when I was young. I remember "tennis man".
It is based on rock paper scissors. It's also based on music, because Megaman and Protoman are Rock and Blues in the japanese versions.
it is also based on music :
rock and roll.
omg mind blown.
Well Cutman beats Elecman cuz the scissors cuts the wires
Ryan is trying to educate Mike with video game history by saying stuff like: "It was very revolutionary how the NES was designed with the PPU."
But Mike is probably only thinking: "Haha....he said PeePee."
"M" stands for "Magnet Beam"
Also, here's what happened at the end: after the Wily Machine exploded, you got hit by the last shot that was still active and on the screen. This hit knocked you backwards toward the left edge of the screen. I remember beating the yellow devil once without taking damage, I felt like I was the shit. Games like this really left you feeling accomplished when you made progress that is something that is really missing from current games.
Looks like the game punished you guys in the end for pausing so much.
Devs said "FUCK YOU!" from 1987 for exploiting their game. Lol.
I'd say Megaman was the one that got punished.
I did not even know that could happen.
And now we will never see the ending
I do enjoy these episodes with Ryan, he brings a different kind of enthusiasm and knowledge than the people we're used to and it's nice to have an alternative now and then.
How much they pay you to say this? I'm willing to complement him and get my comment pinned immediately (not suspicious at all) for money.
I personally worship Ryan and aim to become just like him.
As someone who is trying to learn how to program retro style videogames (using Pico-8) and is interested in how video games actually work, it is refreshing to hear Ryan talk about the technical aspects like graphical limitations and especially how the "pause trick" may have caused the purgatory glitch at the end.
I love Ryan. He is the funniest man on planet Earth. Literally no flaws and he is quite the looker on top of that.
Oh a sarcasm detector, thats a real useful invention.
Love him or hate him, Ryan know his shit. He is a walking video game encyclopedia. Great addition to the team!
I always love Ryan's hair! lol. Beautiful style there.
I don't mind the Mike and Ryan dynamic, but this is one title that should've been saved for J&M Monday's in my opinion.
But I do still love the video/s as always :)
Klonoa what game we play has no bearing on the other show. Jame and I can always play mega man as well -Mike
mike is saying'' mike and ryan has no bearing'' ( mike and ryan doesnt count ) nice one mike hahahaah.GIF
Broken Wave They did mega Man 2.
I disagree. Mike and Ryan is much more entertaining.
Ryan really knows his stuff to be fair
Once Ryan actually builds a game from the ground up in the NES development environment then I'll respect his chops. Otherwise he comes off like a charlatan (aka wannabe developer)
? Knowledge is knowledge dude. He doesn't have to be a developer to know about the console, you know? You, me, everybody can learn these things and that's fine.
LuckyDT Formal Definition of Charlatan: "a person falsely claiming to have a special knowledge or skill; a fraud"
Ryan has never EVER claimed he is a game developer AFAIK
No the reason the bug happened at the end was after Wily's ship blew up his last bouncing bullet hit you before he started his surrender animation.
Yes, the pause trick DID cause the game to freeze at the end (I was actually watching this on pins and needles wondering if that was going to happen.) This happened to me back in the day and I actually called the Gameplay Counselors and they had the same thing happen to them when using the pause trick on Wily. Hope that answers the question.
Yes, spot on!
Mega Man has hair under his helmet. You see him without it in the opening of 4. ;)
in megaman 1 too.
You also see his hair in Mega Man 2
The IKEA couch "Landskrona" Mike and Ryan speak about is refers to Landskrona a city in southwestern Sweden.
Ryan I also had my NES hooked up with RF all throughout my childhood. Even when hooking it up to a VCR with AV inputs at my grandmother's house I still used RF because we didn't know AV was better, didn't care either.
The "Start Trick" is a bug exploit, not an intended feature ya goofs :P
Yeah, Ryan is fucking hyped :D
Do NOT listen to haters, Ryan, you are fucking awesome,
so, Mike, more videos with him :)
Also with James :D
Much love from Serbia
So many people troll the comments when Ryan is in a video and I have no idea why. I mean, of course we're all mostly here for James and Mike, but Ryan's still 100% tolerable.
Top guy Ryan with the NES facts. Keep em coming dude. I always enjoy learning new things about how games were created
jameshetfieldserbia I want Ryan in the future Board James reboot.
I like em all, but Ryan is the most technical and therefore most appreciated by me.
You have the face of a downie.
That ending was beautiful.
Glitching out by using a glitch.
A fitting end.
thanks guys for playing this old school game brings back some good memories lol
The "M" stands for Magnet Beam. You can use the magnet beam to cross those huge gaps in Ice Man's stage as well. Just use the beam, make a long stretch to walk on, and before it runs out, make another long one and jump onto it... repeat to cross the gaps.

Three years later listening to the Star Wars comments. They did NOT age well.
Ryan's introduction is hype.
Disappointing using the pause trick on the final boss, beat it again proper!
Mike - "Why do you know all that stuff?" Ryan - "Because, well...look at me."
The Star Wars conversation did not age well lol
Nice video Ryan! Glad to see you let your guest play and speak a bit!
"SHOW ME SMILE AGAIIIIIIIIIIIIN. Don't waste another minute on your cryin'." - Kirk Cameron. Damn weird soft lock at the end though, lol. GG!
Ryan seems actually very knowledgeable about game mechanics. It's very interesting hearing his perspective.
It was a fun challenge, not an impossible challenge.
Mike's Game Glitches returns by accident.
Personally for me the original Megaman was the best of the entire series. The best robot masters, awesome music, and a real fun time no matter how you look at it.
i wish people would stop hatin on ryan. he also has great insight and makes just as many valued jokes mike. i feel hes a great asset to the team
im glad you guys are playing this i just watched all of Mike's other mega man playthru's and wanted more haha
People who's life is about gaming and they don't immediately know the order of boss weaknesses for this game? It took me a few seconds, but I still pieced it together from memory.
I've been playing this game for 14 years and have never seen anything like that ending glitch
Is anyone noticing a discrepancy between the footage and audio of the video? They seemed really off
Finally, a total classic! You should do all the whole Megaman NES series. (appart the MM2 you did with James)
That glich happens all the time when you beat Wiley.
I love your video's guys. Fun dialogue and awesome game choices. Please keep making these great vids. Thank you James, Mike, and Ryan.
Ryan a good haircut would go a long way.
You guys are getting a lot more comfortable on camera together. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
When I was a kid, I considered it a matter of pride to be able to beat this game without using tricks. Really fun to watch you guys play, but it would have been nice to see you beat it without using tricks.
The pause trick is also in Mega Man 2, except there it kills your momentum.
A detriment in Quickman's stage, but useful in other fall segments.
Mike and Ryan are a great combo, reminds me of the older episodes of JaMM
You guys should try 'Wily Wars' on Genesis. If you don't know, it's 16-bit remakes of Mega Man 1, 2, and 3.
WhoTube They'll have to get a Japanese import since the PAL version is shit
Blank Blank what's wrong with the pal version?
if im not mistaken, not only does it run at 50FPS, but they didn't account for this or whatever, so the game speed is completely screwed up
+jnjjules That applies to almost every game of that era, sadly... Ever play Castlevania on PAL? As it turns out, 5/6 speed is makes it agonizing.
Seriously, don't bother. It's expensive, PAL/Japan exclusive and overall not very good.
I think I know what happened at the end :
so you killed the final boss, but there was this white ball who hitted you after wily was defeated, making megaman step back and hit the door that was just here.
so the game thought megaman was opening the door, then the game tried to load the map, and crashed.
a little like what it can happen on air man stage in megaman 2.
can't wait to meet James and Mike at TooManyGames!
Any reason why you guys didn't use the platform beam to cross the huge gap in iceman stage? the part with the floating eyeball platforms.
Question for Ryan:
Are the skies in SMB1 meant to be pure blue or tinged with slight purple?
22:35 I bit that guy with the normal buster, bitch!
i used to not like ryan that much but since ive been watching these videos ive come to respect him a great a deal...vast knowledge of technical aspects.....very cool dude.
When Ryan started to talk PPU, I listen.
at 24:48 the pause trick will not work if you are playing the PC version of MEGA MAN. Only on the NES system will the pause trick work.
Ryan haters, please 6:37
M is Magnet Beam.
Doctor Handsome no it's MAZER!! ;)
Thanks for watching -Mike
I'm really starting to enjoy these Mike and Ryan video's a lot as much if not more than James and Mike.
I think Mike and Ryan together are hilarious and always make me laugh at least once per episode but even more I like Ryan's knowledge on the technical aspects video games and the NES.
Keep it up guys and fuck the haters.
Great video as always. been watching you guys for many years, always good and entertaining videos. thank you James, Mike and Ryan
This game is probably my earliest video game memory. I grew up with a genesis but a friend of mine had an NES (he lived like 10 blocks from me) and we played this game way back in like 1993(i was in preschool). The MegaMan cartoon used to air at 5am back then.
Yay Mega man. It had a really misleading cover art though.
This Mike & Ryan need more James , just like James & Mike Mondays have some Ryan :D
I love this part of Cinemassacre!
Boss appears, game suddenly appears to get a seizure and totally glich out, the guys stay calm as fuck.
Boss explodes, Mike is like: Oh, that was the pause trick, didn't you know that?
When Ryan says NES it sounds like "any ass" 09:55
I love how they go from game design, to Star Wars. Main reason why it never gets old or to bored to watch.
ryan is such a gun, i like how he knows what he's talking about
You know your old school when a "pause trick" is performed in a mega man nes game lol
That cover art, that's a piece of art; actually. I forgot about that, I have have to look that artist up.
I think I'm one of the few people who got introduced to mega man with the battle network series which I still enjoy to this day
I love the NES 6502 and used to play with assembly code all of the time.
The gameplay is timeless.
when he said giffy peanut butter I got fucking chills down my spine xD
Nice Elvira pinball poster! My old workplace had an Elvira machine, took many of my quarters!
Love you Mike and Ryan!
That intro was shocking and appreciated.
I like Ryan, and I like it when he drops some knowledge.
He's great. Never had a problem with him. Never liked all the hate in the comments.
Ryan got what he deserved fight wily legit or watch the game freeze ...pure karma I loved it.
Elvira pinball! Great game. I love these videos of Mike and Ryan, keep it up!
I think a big part of the target market for the NES classic were people who weren't necessarily into gaming but whom remember the NES from their childhood. Many of them probably aren't in the same demographic that buy modern systems or things like the virtual console.
"Cheaters never prosper" said nobody ever when it comes to Mega Man 1... :D
What is this Auralnauts video you reference at 5:40? I sub to them but haven't seen that.
one of the greatest games ever made! its a goddamn shame that Capcom has NOTHING planned for MM's 30th anniversary. i would LOVE to see you guys play MM4 or 5.
The fun thing about this game is going back and forth to get more lives and energy on Wily's stage 4.
Any more Board James blurays going up for sale Mike?
That Cover Art though!
You guys need to try Commander Keen or Doom (Win95)
Many people say that this is the Hardest in the Mega Man series. It's hard to agree since this (at the time) is my only "Weekend Game". Bought it on Saturday, didn't know the order, then after 7 hours on a really slow Sunday I beat it. It might also help that I beat Mega Man 2 before 1. Mega Man 2 I think took several months for me.
+johnbrnssr I beat Megaman 1 the night I started it and had a blast. Still haven't gotten through Willy's Castle in MM2, so yeah I agree
Diddy64wii / Luigi128GreenCap well yeah, but M&B was the frustrating, cheaper kind of hard if I'm not mistaken. That's why I didn't really consider it
None of the mega man games are hard.
I remember beat the yellow devil with the regular blaster. Hardest accomplishment i got as nes player back in the day. Willy felt so easy at the end.
I love mega man since I was a kid. Almost had every game. But the one I had played most of them all is actually mega man 1. Not saying is the best. But there is something about it I really enjoy.
