Dylan Cuthbert, head programmer of the Star Fox franchise has said alot of these roms that are the leaked game online, are not the full version of the game and that there is a much more polished game in his possession and Nintendo's. So most of humanity has not played the full game. It may be little tweaks that everyone may not notice but they may add up. Either way, this game is pushing the hardware like crazy and is quite an accomplishment.
It's super impressive to see that the SNES can pump out 3D graphics like this. I can't imagine how hard development was for this game considering the hardware.
Honestly, they were starting to be a little passé and lame, they were not "retro" at the time. Star Fox was cutting edge when it came out, Star Fox 2 would have been hopelessly outdated. Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot would have came out mere months after this.
I remember being pissed when I was about 20 when I learned that there was supposed to be a Starfox 2 for SNES that was never released. Needless to say I'll be picking up a SNES classic.
Story goes Miyamoto was developing for the upcoming N64 and didn't like that a 3rd party studio was achieving better 3D gameplay on the Super Nintendo, so they took the code for StarFox 2 and used it with StarFox 64 and Super Mario 64 to ensure the N64 was a success.
I find it very strange that one of your biggest complaints is that you wanted more flying and less walking sections. Yet those levels work really well if you mostly fly and only use the walker when necessary. It's like complaining about all the walking you have to do in Grand theft auto, yet you never get into a car unless the game forces you. also, side note. you don't experience the whole game in just one run through. this was meant to be a game that you would play several times and get a different experience each time. so yes that boss you were hoping to fight is most certainly in the game, it's just that when you played it you happened to not encounter it
I'm surprised you both enjoyed this game so much. 90% of the video seems to be criticisms, suggestions for improvement and just a lack of enthusiasm. At no point does the video reflect your verbal enjoyment of the game.
I mean, they do that for every single game they play. Every single time they play something and the entire video is filled with criticisms of the game, they still end with "Well this game is really good, definitely a good game, you should try it out". Their playthrough of "Out of This World" was a notable example of that. IMO it's so they don't get criticized with "WOW I can't believe you said [insert game here] is bad, that's my favorite game ever, you're just awful at it, git gud scrubs!"
I'm actually really excited to play Starfox 2 and for the SNES Classic Edition. I think I'm just excited to play Zelda, Metroid an Final Fantasy 3(really 6) as well.
The roaming space dragon is a very cool concept in my opinion. It reminds me very much of Rayquaza and the idea of fighting a space dragon whilst piloting a space fighter sounds really appealing to me.
If they ever come out with a N64 classic I hope they put Dinosaur Planet on it. For those who don't know, Star Fox Adventures was originally going to be Dinosaur Planet, on the N64 instead of the gamecube. Yeah, that's why it doesn't feel like a Star Fox game. It wasn't originally going to be one.
cool, since SF2 is gonna be on SNES mini, I hope it comes with a "we're sorry about StarFox Zero" sticky note, and maybe a "Sorry about shoehorning Dinosaur Planet" on the 64 mini.
8:02 RYAN: "Do you wanna try the Battleship?" No Ryan, he only asked you about going to the Battleship like 5 times before you actually asked that question lol
You guys are supposed to protect Corneria. Missiles and enemies are making their way towards your base and if you don't stop them then its GAME OVER. I know it may be tempting to take out the bigger targets but sometimes its the little ones you have to look out for. Also the "inverted" controls is true StarFox fashion, I'm not one for inverted controls/cameras but when it comes to StarFox it just feels right and I fuck up when its not inverted, even on other ship-based games.
Star Fox 64 will always be the best one though. I remember saving up all my money for months as a kid and finally buying it for 96 dollars. By far the best flying game I'd say. So entertaining. I don't know if any of you have played it but I'd strongly recommend it.
I know that even the best rom of this out there is only like 99% complete or something like that. I know that Nintendo has a complete version, so I wonder how that differs from the most complete rom out there now.
reversalmushroom I have a feeling most of it'll be slightly cosmetic, like filling in missing textures, like the legs on the Walker ship transformation.
Polish and fine tuning usually come towards the end of development, so I imagine the difficulty will be tweaked and the bosses won't go down so quickly.
Dylan Cuthbert stated back in interviews that all the hacked ROMs were based on old builds and were missing major gameplay elements. He also stated that even the best ones were a long way off from the actual finished product. I'm hoping there's some improvements with the official release, but honestly I'm not expecting too much. I'd be happy with what we already have just getting polished and tweaked, but I certainly won't complain if it is significantly improved. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
v2mmxst10 It's politics to give the exclusivity of it being on the mini Snes more hype, Im betting practically everyone who worked on it will not have been involved in any recent dev on it, Nintendo just want to monetize it since so many have been playing it on homebrew. The lack of blatent bugs proves it was finished, no amount of AI tweaking will change the fact Nintendo knew back in 95 it just wasnt upto par, its merely an ok game today, except nostalgia demand has ensured it's usefulness 20+ years later.
I'm really curious to find out if the version on the SNES Classic is going to be any different from this prototype build that's been going around. Thanks for the video btw! :)
Where did you learn to fly. (bump) Where did you learn to fly. (bump)....... This Star Fox game reminds me a little bit of Warp Speed for SNES that was an awesome game.
It's already been stated in various places that the most complete leaked version of the game has the random mission stuff mostly broken due to the ROM being in debug mode and the translation hack didn't fix it because there's no frame of reference to work off of/see how it is supposed to work (at least until the SNES Classic comes out with the finalized game). You'll probably find that boss/enemy health had yet to be fine tuned/balanced in the leaked copies too which is likely why a lot of things felt like they died way, way too easily/quickly. It has been stated that the leaked copies were of versions that had not gone through Quality Assurance testing.
The devs did say they were very unhappy that this prototype was released in this state. Apparently it's 95% complete. 5% of polish can make a big difference so hopefully the full game is well polished. I personally had lots of fun with the prototype and love the graphical leap from the original Star Fox. Even tightening the controls alone would make it much better!
Supposedly the ROM that's out there for Star Fox 2 is a build that was only about 85% complete, and that didn't go through significant bugtesting. I've read that the version released on the SNES classic will be the full version as Nintendo did have a complete version of the game that was never released.
*finished* That. Was amazing! I really adore this game and would adore it to death on getting my own copy of Starfox 2. Shame, we didn't see Andrew Oikonny on this video and how he looked. I mean I know how Andrew from Starfox 2 looks like: WAY different than how he looks on the N64 title and beyond. Oikonny in SF2....looks....like....a chimp. Or at least an actual monkey in a way. I shan't deny, I'm not great with describing how is speech window looks like. As for his wolfen, looks just like Pigma's and Leon's. ^w^
2:59 yeah, the unreleased star fox 2 is a strategy game for those pondering. ^w^ You have to prevent as much damage from happening to Corneria and stop andross, his forces and Starwolf.
You guys know you can press the select button to switch to the traditional chase cam when you're in cockpit view right? Whenever it started out in cockpit view by default they were acting like "Aww I hate this part" then when it was chase cam they were very happy. They did the same thing in the original Star Fox, I'm starting to think they don't know about the select button.
Equalizing Distort is right. i remember making some stuff that was clearly, CLEARLY not techno, in fact it had live guitars and bass, and i mean like lead guitar and emphasis on bass, but because of a synth and "altererd vocals" it was "techno", undisputed.
Well technically if you have beats that are 1/8 seconds apart than it's not dubstep. That's how much of bitch you guys sound like saying it ain't dubstep cuz nobody gives a poop poop. Frank can't poop! Haha
This game is good i have a fan made cart of the version of the game thats on SNES Classic and a fan made box. This game is repetitive with space battle and inside ship battles where your ship has legs so sometimes i lose interest quickly. Star Fox 64 what a great game.
3:16 Oh look it's Pigma. *gasp* that reminds me and speaking of the devil, to those new, pondering and don't know, the Starwolf team: Wolf O donnell, Leon Powalski, Pigma Dengar and Andrew Oikonny, actually made their debut in this game and not Star fox the lylat wars on N64. However, since this was never released at the time, we all thought Lylat wars was their debut
I have an 8bitdo SNES controller as well, they are quite nice. I was very surprised at their quality. Good stuff. Ryan, ignore the haters if you're not already.
I loved this game so much on the snes as a kid it blew me away. I beat it I think twice or three times. I would be setting in front of the TV leaning left and right when I turned a lot lol . FYI it helps if you lean in real life in game 🤓
Just a reminder when you get the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) classic and play these games, especially Starfox 2, you're entitled to have from feelings of love to utter hate towards these games as well as those on the NES classic, but remember. If you're new these system's and their games or not, young or very old, this was the 1980s-90s and/or as well as your childhood. The human race we're still gradually getting a strong grip on the gaming industry at the time and we're always trying something new to blow people's minds and probably be way ahead of their time. Sure these Classic titles might not be great nor hold up very well nowadays, but back then it rocked our socks off and we loved it to death.
I love games like Star Fox, Super Mario Worls, Chrono Trigger and all the popular SNES games, but you should play Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel. That was a cool game on SNES.
The comments Ryan was making about the Super FX being a more powerful version of the SNES CPU actually describe the SA-1, the Super FX was purely a graphics chip.
Mike: Go to the battleship
Ryan:...
Mike: Try the battleship
Ryan:...Should I go to the battleship?
Mike:...sure
Dylan Cuthbert, head programmer of the Star Fox franchise has said alot of these roms that are the leaked game online, are not the full version of the game and that there is a much more polished game in his possession and Nintendo's. Either way, this game is pushing the hardware like crazy and is quite an accomplishment.
I know this is late... but you lucked out!
I would have LOVED this game if it actually had come out and I knew about it back during the SNES days
Tbh I like it better than the original
"where did you learn to fly?"
19:06
XD ya beat me to it
kept thinking the same thing
xD, I knew that was coming, too!
vasquez. i. This deserves more likes.
Lol, that's what this game is missing for sure.
I remember, vividly, in like 4th grade class, daydreaming about coming home and playing Star Fox on the SNES.
God I miss childhood.
It's super impressive to see that the SNES can pump out 3D graphics like this. I can't imagine how hard development was for this game considering the hardware.
the SuperFX chip had a lot to do with it.
2:26 Was Ryan trying to say Furry Heaven instead of Fairy Heaven?
I'm pretty sure he said furry, but it did sound like fairy.
Zeldas Champion sounded like fairy to me
he said furry, it's the PA accent
Zeldas Champion
To me it sounded like ferry heaven, u know, like the friggin boat
Furries must love this game
Mike: "do the battleship"
Ryan: "do you want to try the battleship?"
Mike: "sure"
Its impressive that its running on snes hardware.
It seems a bit basic now but at the time this would've been absolutely phenomenal!
It does, they fix every flaws of Starfox 1.
Well, the 10 fps framerate, for one
This was not impressive in 95/96, when the Saturn, PlayStation, and 3do were out. This game would have been dated the instant it came out
Peter Kaminsky
If we're going by your theory then all SNES games would've been dated around this time which they weren't
Honestly, they were starting to be a little passé and lame, they were not "retro" at the time. Star Fox was cutting edge when it came out, Star Fox 2 would have been hopelessly outdated. Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot would have came out mere months after this.
I hope you guys check out and compare the final version when the SNES Classic comes out
I remember being pissed when I was about 20 when I learned that there was supposed to be a Starfox 2 for SNES that was never released. Needless to say I'll be picking up a SNES classic.
Star Fox 2 in 2017, 100% fan Service, thank you Nintendo, very much appreciated!
Certainly looks like a stepping stone between Star Fox and Star Fox 64.
They were developed at the same time and it got cancelled in fear of it outshining 64
About the game resetting on you, Star Fox 2 has a soft reset function when you press R, L, Start, and Select all at once.
love how this intro feels like it should have been at E3 some where.
0:54 Is the real start of the video if you are not a fan of noise.
I need every James and Mike video to have intros that live up to this. Holy fuck you guys are wonderful.
17:35 They didnt release this game. they made a new one with analogue control for the N64. They realized full 3D needed better controls
Interesting how a game never released is going to be the big thing released with the SNES Classic, guess I have a reason to buy it now
I find it very strange that one of your biggest complaints is that you wanted more flying and less walking sections. Yet those levels work really well if you mostly fly and only use the walker when necessary. It's like complaining about all the walking you have to do in Grand theft auto, yet you never get into a car unless the game forces you.

Roger Babin I think it was because it was so ahead of its time but so dated today it is hard to truly judge.
"Like a poodle or something" lol, that reminds me of Big Lebowski "I'm looking after my ex's dog, I think it's a Pomeranian" *out walks a Shih Tzu*
Can't wait to try the SNES Classic version to compare with the ROM hack I've got of this game...
When will you do Star Fox 64 with James, Mike?
When will you do Star Fox 64 with Cameron, Winfree?
fay is a cocker spaniel! her last name is spaniel in fact, lol.
and yes, "fairy" heaven indeed~
Rip James Avery 😕
Fay has no last name. Stop taking fan names as gospel.
laughed so hard watching Mike try to fly down the hallway around 19mins in.
I'm actually really excited to play Starfox 2 and for the SNES Classic Edition. I think I'm just excited to play Zelda, Metroid an Final Fantasy 3(really 6) as well.
That intro is quite possibly the best thing ever
Have you seen everything
+The Top Loader Have you never heard of the concept of intentional hyperbole
You didn't like it?
Well if you hated that .. you might hate my intros too > hyperbolic right there
LOL I love the new production. Please keep doing these!
Wow i sure wasn't expecting that intro lol. Thanks for the laughs guys!
Cool hangout, thanks for all the hard work, and awesome quality as always.
The roaming space dragon is a very cool concept in my opinion. It reminds me very much of Rayquaza and the idea of fighting a space dragon whilst piloting a space fighter sounds really appealing to me.

cool, since SF2 is gonna be on SNES mini, I hope it comes with a "we're sorry about StarFox Zero" sticky note, and maybe a "Sorry about shoehorning Dinosaur Planet" on the 64 mini.
LupusPurpura That will only happen if a completed version of dinosaur plant already exist.
N64 Mini will never come......
8:02 RYAN: "Do you wanna try the Battleship?"
No Ryan, he only asked you about going to the Battleship like 5 times before you actually asked that question lol
That intro. I need more intros like that one, guys. It was hilarious!
awesome intro guys! really made me laugh, you guys rock!
You guys are supposed to protect Corneria. Missiles and enemies are making their way towards your base and if you don't stop them then its GAME OVER. Even back then, I thought the visual was too coarse and couldn't get into it. Those flat bland surfaces and jagged edges were not for me.
Star Fox 64 will always be the best one though. I remember saving up all my money for months as a kid and finally buying it for 96 dollars. By far the best flying game I'd say. So entertaining. I don't know if any of you have played it but I'd strongly recommend it.
This is like Star Fox: Command
OMG That intro had me so hype! lol
*dehyped
fixed that for you
So good to see a great start to a video like this! Good job guys! :D
I know that even the best rom of this out there is only like 99% complete or something like that. I know that Nintendo has a complete version, so I wonder how that differs from the most complete rom out there now.
reversalmushroom probably not much
reversalmushroom I have a feeling most of it'll be slightly cosmetic, like filling in missing textures, like the legs on the Walker ship transformation.

Ok...i just saw 20 seconds of the intro and this video already earned a like!
Cool video guys. Love the extra effort on the intro.
This game looks like when I vomit in a toilet and wake up 12 hours later and need to pee.
"What am I looking at."
Me: "The enemy. It's right fucking there!"
Mike: I don't know what to do!
Ryan: Shoot the guys infront of you..
Where did you learn to fly?
I'd like more James and Mike episodes but I know James has a life now lol.
I'm really curious to find out if the version on the SNES Classic is going to be any different from this prototype build that's been going around. Thanks for the video btw! :)
Love the production value on this.
Ya know if you press start you can likely find "options" and or "settings"...c'mon guys, don't be scrubs..
Not trying to meme or be rude or anything but uh. Ryan has quite a lack in barrel rolling, which explains why he takes so much damage in fights.
To see Star Fox 2 finally released for over 20 years, it has been a long time coming.
The poodle also reminds me of Tina Faye....with an "E" ;P
4:49 "good luck!"
Press the Y Button to use the Speed Boost!
The intro was amazing!!!!
Where did you learn to fly. (bump) Where did you learn to fly. (bump).......
This Star Fox game reminds me a little bit of Warp Speed for SNES that was an awesome game.

That intro was fucking great xD
That intro... i am SO HYPED!!!
Supposedly the ROM that's out there for Star Fox 2 is a build that was only about 85% complete, and that didn't go through significant bugtesting. 1:00 YOUR POSTER OMFG Wave Race 64 that was the most awesome game, jesus christ, totally forgot about it
I can't un-see the bottom left hand of the screen 3:10 . That is Bender. Apparently he is also 40% Star Fox 2.
2:59 yeah, the unreleased star fox 2 is a strategy game for those pondering. ^w^ You have to prevent as much damage from happening to Corneria and stop andross, his forces and Starwolf.
Ryan sums it up: the tech just wasn't ready yet to make this game worthwhile.
I wonder if Ryan is a fan of X-Wing and Tie Fighter 🤔 or Wing Commander 😬
You guys know you can press the select button to switch to the traditional chase cam when you're in cockpit view right? Whenever it started out in cockpit view by default they were acting like "Aww I hate this part" then when it was chase cam they were very happy. They did the same thing in the original Star Fox, I'm starting to think they don't know about the select button.
Lmao dude nice dubstep opening love it
8-Bit Eric not dubstep
that was in no way, shape or form dubstep
Back in the day anything electronic sounding was wrongly called "techno", seems like it's moved to "dubstep".
So im taking it that the version that will be on the SNES Classic will be a more polished version than the final version found on the web??
14:00 Here's Leon Powalski's debut to the Starfox series ^w^
Sincerely loved the intro! 😅
Is my feeble little mind just now piecing together that Felix named his pet after a Star Fox character!?
I love this game so much. I beat it a dozen times as a kid, can't wait for the official release!
Where can I get the music? Lol
Just a reminder when you get the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) classic and play these games, especially Starfox 2, you're entitled to have from feelings of love to utter hate towards these games as well as those on the NES classic, but remember. Jordanthehumanhedgehog the fuck are you talking about
Very nice. I hope for a comparison video with this rom and the completed version when it comes out!
Ryan really added that modern gaming point of view that cinemassacre was severely lacking.
If anyone is curious about the intro music it's "Demolition Trash Master"
Play the game on the higher difficulties. There's more game when you play on expert.
You could just play Starfox Command, it's an expanded and updated Starfox 2.
kapparomeo It has some of the mechanics from StarFox 2, but its not an updated/expanded version
Command has an horrible story.
Big fan of this Mike and Ryan series lmao
You guys keep saying there was nothing like this, you should check out the game Vortex on the SNES. It was a lot like this.
Inverted vertical look is THE way to play any game... /facts
Yeah maybe if you are using a real joystick when you play, otherwise inverted is a handicap.
TypeSH especially plane games
This is the most under rated part of cinemassacer
I love games like Star Fox, Super Mario Worls, Chrono Trigger and all the popular SNES games, but you should play Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel. That was a cool game on SNES.
The comments Ryan was making about the Super FX being a more powerful version of the SNES CPU actually describe the SA-1, the Super FX was purely a graphics chip.
Ryan is the type who has his nostalgia glasses super glued on. Rip em off man.
"This was 1995"
It's crazy how late SNES / early N64+PS1 games are now as old as Pong was back in the 90s.
The airhorns are a nice touch guys.
