You're the only game series I watch on youtube pretty much now. I'm a game dev and watching your videos is inspiring to me as I am for my games to have a retro feel to them. I don't think anything has surpassed the N64 in terms of pure gaming magic. The GC came pretty close but I don't think it will ever get better than the N64.

I must confess I quite like South Park Rally, I bought an unfinished pirate copy for the PS1 at a car boot sale back in the day and quite enjoyed it. Obviously it's no where near as good as Mario Kart/Diddy Kong, but the checkpoint race concept was quite novel.
I'd love Nintendo to remake the original Super Mario Kart though, 4 Player Split Screen and 8 Player Online, maybe a few new tracks, or later, popular tracks in the style of the original SNES game.
Will you be doing N64 FPS games soon Glenn? That should go down well! :)

I would love to see nintendo bring modern features to some of their older games like that. Could you imagine how much they'd make if they added online support to SMK? thats the kinda stuff they really should be doing to push a higher price point for their nintendo service pack thing whatever its called rather than a few damn standard NES games that most of us have purchased many times over the years already

I always wanted them to remake all their n64 classics split screen coop.ike mario 64 and ocarina of time. Would it work well? Likely not. But as a cad who wants to replay these games with his young kids, it would be 10000% worthwhile to buy Ocarina of Time for 80 bucks just to play coop with my kids even if it's janky.
Mario kart 64 split screen same graphics but 4 players in grand prix would be amazing

I liked both DKR and MK64. But I was very impressed with Rares ability to adapt to different genres, put out a fairly solid entry while also often advancing the genre a little themselves. Its quite impressive to look at what they put out during the Snes and N64s lifetime, its a mix of quality, quantity and variety that even massive studios and publishers can't seem to match today.
While I think MK64 was obviously the template they started with for DKR, I think they went above and beyond in terms of content and graphics. It had 3D models and elaborate tracks. Many different modes including a very well fleshed out adventure mode with its own hub and boss characters to race that were not recycled assets or races from anywhere else in the game. When I was younger it was definitely a game to stick with, even after everyone else had to go home. The powerups were also not random and not rubber banding which made it feel a little different too.
MK64 was the first kart racer on the 64 so I have to give it credit for setting the standard. I think the controls may have been slightly sharper too. But I couldn't help but feel it was a little empty looking next to DKR.

Echoing lots of comments in that I loved the multiplayer of Mario Kart 64 and single player of Diddy Kong racing. When my childhood friends and I get together we STILL play Mario kart 64. There's been 20 years of amazing multiplayer games since then but MK64 remains king in our particular group.
Some of the music in DKR is just pure nostalgia bliss for me. I often find myself listening to it (and Banjo's) soundtrack regularly. David Wise (and Grant Kirkhope!) is a godly composer. I have a Christmas music playlist that my I play while my wife and I put up the Christmas tree and decorations every year and there are DKR and BK tunes on it mixed in with your Last Christmas, Fairytale Of New York and the likes.
Saying that, some of the music in MK64 is amazing as well. The end credits in that game are just magical. From the music swelling to the flyover of all the tracks, then Mario thanking you for playing the game. Just perfect.

It's a real shame that more games haven't copied DKRs hub world. I probably spent as much time chilling there as I did racing. Floating down the lazy river as the score changes themes between the steel drum summer to the plucky xylophone of winter and looking EVERYWHERE for secrets was an absolute joy.

  • @maxidy1498

In regards to LEGO Racers, there was a turning delay onto either the N64 or PS1 controls due to the fact that no one tested the controls before release. If you look into the history of where LEGO Racers was made, it was published by LEGO Media(lego.fandom.com/wiki/LEGO_Media). They published games purely on PC which is a shame that LEGO Racers was the underdog of kart racers all because of that one frustrating mechanic from a console port. Media could have prevented this problem by asking High Voltage Software to test the controls before release.

    Diddy Kong Racing - Was a late purchase for me. First played it back in 2006 when me and the family were staying over at a rented house during our holiday. Got the DS remake and fully completed it before eventually getting my own N64 copy. Downside though I struggled to beat the 1st boss ^^;
Mario Kart 64 - My 4th game I got for the N64, very nostalgic to me hearing the music again. Really enjoyed it, but was lacking in unlockables as well as not much to keep single players interested with a free play mode.
LEGO Racers - Requested this one for Christmas due to the whole 'build your own character and cart'. Was challenging I must say, but completed it in the end.
Mickeys Speedway USA - Never picked this game up, but from magazines said at the time, it was actually a great game (Nintendo Official Magazine gave it a 91%)
South Park Rally - Always surprised when I hear that South Park Rally is a bad game, because I thought it was rather good as I kept going back to it more than Mario Kart 64 due to the amount of stuff to unlock and different game modes as well as the replayability. Also the magazines gave it positive scores (including N64 Magazine giving it a 88%).

One thing that Mario 64 lacks is music when you play with more then 2 persons, but I really like everything else hahaha.

Mickey Mouse is my favorite, remember playing it as a rent never had it as a kid, it wasn't until early adulthood I had that game in my collection, my uncle gave it to me as well 3 other games knowing that I had been looking for them.
As for the sequel that never came I wanted to have Scrooge, GizmoDuck, Bonkers D. Bobcat and Darkwing included, as well having their iconic locations as racetracks.
As for the premise it would have been nice if it had something to do with the Beagle Boys.

The N64 library may have always been one of the smallest but it is indeed full-packed with outstanding games and kart racers on this system were absolutely incredible. My favorite one is Diddy Kong Racing due to its outstanding single player mode as well as the great looking graphics or the usage of Hovercrafts and Planes. Also it is quite difficult, but that is what I like. 😂
The Multiplayer mode of Mario Kart 64 is in my opinion to this date unmatched and by far the funniest I have ever experienced.
Mickey‘s Speedway USA is neither as good as DKR nor as Mario Kart 64, still it‘s quite enjoyable
But I have also admit that Crash Team Racing on its PS1 Counterpart is perhaps with DKR the greatest fun racer to be ever done. So much content, great soundtrack and design even if it borrowed a lot from DKR or Mario Kart.
