It's tough to bring back Wario Stadium because it's so broken. If they leave all the shortcuts in, people will be pissed because the track is broken. If they take them out, people will be pissed because you can't do the shortcuts anymore. Personally, they should patch the shortcuts and bring it back how it was envisioned!
So glad Wario Stadium got into top 3. That ramp alone in multiplayer makes it great. Everyone is paranoid about another player getting a lightning bolt right there.
My brothers and I would have a rule that when you get a lightning you have to use it before you reach the next set of item boxes to avoid saving it for ramps etc.
Rainbow Road on MK64 totally missed the point of the SMK original. It was a track designed to test all your skills you had gained from the other tracks into one super tough finale. The fact you could fall off made all the more daunting. MK64 sticking rails on the side just ruined it.
I don't think they "missed the point", just wanted to try something different. Rather than send the players off with a punishing gauntlet, give them a chilled experience to wind down and savour instead. It's one of my favourite tracks for that reason.
Toad’s Turnpike is definitely my #1. The atmosphere is so cool, with the moving cars and the sunset lighting. Also I have to say that I have always been a MK64 toad fan. The AWOAWOAWOAWO sound is super nostalgic.
I love this game. So much fun due to the handicap almost being a wild card and even the second player could get the lightning strike or three red turtles. Plus the stage themes is just as fun.
My top 5 in no particular order: - Toad's Turnpike - Wario Stadium - Koopa Troopa Beach - Sherbet Land - Banshee Boardwalk I hope they release MK64 on switch, that would be awesome.
Cannot wait to watch this! The favourite game of my childhood. I remember spending an entire night having a best of 100 matches with friends in Battle mode on the only battle mode map worth playing, Block Fort.
Yup, perhaps I didn’t elaborate as much as I meant to as I meant that it’s most fitting to the course if that makes sense. Yeah the 3 raceways and wario stadium are all the same track
1. Bowser's Castle - One of my favourites in the entire series, very complex, dark atmosphere, haunting music and a fun rack to revisit again and again. 2. Royal Raceway - Truly iconic, a perfect "raceway" track, tight turns, long straights, great to optimise, and of course the castle grounds being explorable. 3. Banshee Boardwalk - Amazing atmosphere, I used to be creeped out by this stage as a kid, mainly the house. Very unique, especially the jumping cheep cheep. 4. DK's Jungle Parkway - I adore this stage, the huge river jump, the bridge, the cave, the items being thrown at you, its almost perfect. 5. Frappe Snowland - I always loved the nighttime snowy setting, and the route is again very interesting, the canyon section is a personal favourite. 6. Koopa Troopa Beach - Great theming, great music, the route is very interesting and surprisingly good looking, an overall solid track. 7. Choco Mountain - You say boring I say great to optimise, the narrow path and steep sides make you feel accomplished when you pull off a good lap. 8. Kalimari Desert - The train element is the main thing here, I love it, but the western desert is a cool theme which we sadly haven't seen since. 9. Wario Stadium - Incredibly long and boring to some but the theming of a massive dirt bike stadium always excited me with the addition of the wall jump. 10. Mario Raceway - A huge step up from Luigi Raceway, the layout is much more complex and the greater focus on obstacles and more turns makes it more fun. 11. Toad's Turnpike - The traffic element is unique and a nightmare in mirror mode, but other than the glitches with the barriers its just a figure 8 with some cars. 12. Yoshi Valley - Probably gets overhyped for the alternate paths system, but other than that its quite bland but the theming and sunset are very nice. 13. Sherbet Land - Cool theming and I love the music but its very flat and bland and the cave section can be annoying to navigate, plus ice physics. 14. Luigi Raceway - A good introductory course but again nothing to shout about, just a simply loop with some slightly banked turns. 15. Moo Moo Farm - Asimple oval with not much to be excited about, the random element in the monty moles is kinda cool though I guess. 16. Rainbow Road - The railings make it far to easy and combined with the length its easily the most boring and tedious track in the game, perhaps the series. The music is iconic though.
Great video, Glenn! For me I’ll always love Royal Raceway. The big jump you mentioned, plus having Peach’s Castle from Super Mario 64 in the track is a nice touch. 👍
16- HAHAHA. Fall into Water 15- It's not a bad course 14- I hate it 13- Hmm... is not too bad 12- Very Boring 11- WHY? I LOVE IT. 10- Totally Disagree, Is incredible, one of my favs. 9- Hmm... its too short. 8- Is a good Course, i love the "two" trains. 7- Amazing Jump 6- meh... it's ok but not too great 5- Definitively the Best one. 4- First Highway course in all the series. 3- I love it. 2- Incredible, That Jumps. 1- LOL, I love the music but there are better tracks.
Im too nostalgic for Toads old voice to not still pick him, I love his zippy lightweight. Fave tracks you pretty much got at the top, DK jungle and Royal raceway
lol I assumed you ment track as in song - dont know why. Song is Rainbow road but my favorite track is Moo moo farm just due to the fact that it feels like your going so fast on that track.
With Mario Kart 64 being my first ever racing game, I played it to death - both single player and multiplayer - and for that reason every track seems to have some redeeming quality thanks to the power of nostalgia (yes, even Choco Mountain!). Having looked at N64 Today’s list, I would agree with their top 5, though swap Royal Raceway for Yoshi Valley. 5. DK’s Jungle Parkway 4. Moo Moo Farm 3. Yoshi Valley 2. Bowser’s Castle 1. Toad’s Turnpike. Great video!
wow.. i just played Mario Party 1 with my fiancee i won Marios Rainbow Castle and she DKs Jungle Adventure and now i am watching my favourite N64 youtuber ranking MK64s tracks.. what a night! thank you Glenn i love Bowsers Castle Koopa Troopa Beach and Wario Stadium
@@n64glennplant When I was younger, that track would always be a problem for me to clear, when I did it was like the opening of a new world, also I don't know why but the soundtrack of the course would always bring me to the brink of tears, in a warm, bittersweet way. Also, welcome back to the channel! :D
@@n64glennplant It's a great game. I am from St. Annes near Blackpool but now live in Vietnam. Game collecting here can be slim pickings but you can pick up some bargains. I recently got an N64 for £10. Then was searching for Goldeneye and Diddy Kong Racing and got them for a few quid each :)
@@n64glennplant it was always fun in multiplayer. That section with the falling rocks and no barriers was a good place to lay bananas or use shells to knock the other players back half a lap.
Nice list. The beach course is great and absolutely classic. Not sure who doesn't like that one. Wario Stadium is fun as well and despite a less-than-stellar aesthetic, it plays almost perfect IMO. I would put both snow maps a lot higher and the ghost one down near the bottom; that track is pure frustration lol
This game and Star Fox 64 were the first ones I played on the console back in December of '96. I still have both of them inside their boxes and 100% complete, even with the original plastic bag for each cartridge. I don't know why as a kid I saved all of that! I play them often, grinning the whole way through 😁 My favourite three tracks in order of preference 👇🏻👇🏻 1. DK's Jungle Parkway 2. Toad's Turnpike 3. Moo Moo Farm
My top three are: 1. Bowsers Castle- So fun dodging those thwomps. Just feels so hectic and chaotic 2. Sherbert Land- Love jumping over the corners, dodging penguins and just love how slidy it is. 3. DK Jungle- this one always felt the fastest. Shocked to learn it had the lowest frame rate. Underrated part they get rid of in future MK games is getting coconuts thrown at you when you’re off course.
3. Bowser's Castle 2. Royal Raceway 1. Wario Stadium I'm really annoyed that Wario Stadium hasn't been remade in one of the newer Mario Karts yet as a retro track. Here's hoping for Mario Kart 9.
I'm surprised... my Top 3 is really similar to yours, just replace DK Jungle Parkway with Yoshi's Valley. I love the sheer tension and insanity of the multiple tracks, and sure, there is an optimized route, but with just a banana or two, you can block that way. Then chaos begins, as porcupines and eggs littered around the track make things much harder to race around.
I'm very glad to hear of you returning for some more gaming fun, Glenn. You've been gone for so long that it felt that you stopped making anymore videos like these. But it's great to have you back now and I, for one, am happy to listen to your well-known voice again.
My top 3 would be Bowser's Castle, DK's Jungle Parkway, & Koopa Troopa Beach with Yoshi Valley & Toad's Turnpike getting honorable mentions. I had never really thought about why I liked certain courses more then other's [outside of Bowser's Castle as I like the difficulty and utter anarchy of that race] so this was an interesting exercise!
@@n64glennplant absolutely. Clean and tidy graphics without too much detail. I couldn't believe that the characters and karts weren't 3D models when I was a kid.
Srsly I was more into Diddy Kong Racing and got the cartridge even today. But my friends got the game, so my favs: Wario's Stadium, The Traffic Stage, Bowser's Castle and the Yoshi stage. It is too cool to got a Video on friday, again😃
Loved this video! ^_^ My Top 3 Tracks are: Bowser's Castle; for the challenging twists and turns and for the throwback to the classic 16-bit castle level aesthetic of past Mario games; Wario's Stadium, for all the obstacles/jumps and for the memories of playing it with my sister and waiting to ambush each other with shells or lightning bolts before the big jump; and Toad's Turnpike, playing it on Extra/Mirror Mode made for an insane race! x3 And I usually play as Princess Peach, but sometimes choose Yoshi as well
Fun video, would love to see more of your ranked lists. Goldeneye level rank, Rare collector rank (Kazooie, Tooie, DK64 mixed), top 10 racing levels (Beetle Adventure, San Francisco Rush, Top Gear, etc). Could be fun to put that together
Oh man it's so frustrating, this course alone could take you hours trying to finish it... I've been there. And forget that last lap where they throw at you all the damn trailers.
Glenn you should do a video ranking all the Levels from the bond series...Including Perfect dark, or all FPS levels on the console in general. You're bringing a new life back to nintendo 64 with these videos. I can see you do this out of sheer passion, but someone from nintendo needs to reach out to you. You're a credit to the nintendo community and should have way more subscribers. Keep up making my summer even better! My courses without question. 1) Toads Turnpike 2) Wario stadium 3) Koopa trooper Beach
I'm old enough to remember seeing the demo of the beta at Sears around Christmas of 1996...I remember going home and having dreams about Choco Mountain and how amazing it looked to me.....it's hard for me to look at this game without nostalgia. To me it's all perfect, glitch shortcuts and all
@@n64glennplant My stepbrother and I definitely enjoyed going through the game in early '98 after spending a solid month watching the Nintendo Power VHS over and over.....but I actually had quite a few friends in that era who thought the game was "too kiddy" and "too british" and this is coming from 11 year olds. But in the late 90s I think we were generally looking for stuff that was a bit more "edgy" like F-Zero X. With the group of kids I knew, Mario Kart 64 held its appeal far longer. But it's obviously not nearly as deep of a game.
Moo Moo Farm is iconic. Really brings back great memories and the chuckles we had due to the (German only) innuendo of it sounding like a dirty word. Ah, childhood ❤️
@@n64glennplant it’s the German Word „Mumu“ which I find hard to translate but basically means female private parts but very childishly like „wee wee“ or „hoo ha“ if those are even words (not a native, so I had to google). It’s offensive enough to get a chuckle out of it every time us 14 year old lads arrived at that track. Puberty is priceless
My ranking, 16, Wario stadium, boring as fuck 15, moo moo farm, also really boring but at least it’s short 14, frappe snowland, only good part is the bridge 13, chocolate mountain, meh track but great remakes 12, Koopa troopa beach, this would be 14 if it wasn’t for the tunnel shortcut 11, sherbet land, good course and fun penguins 10, royal raceway, overrated but still kinda fun 9, mario raceway, fun shortcuts and the iconic pipe and go sign of mario 8, Luigi raceway, amazing beginner course 7, Yoshi valley, fun gimmick 6, kalimari desert, love going in the trains route 5, toads turnpike, really fun 4 Dk’s jungle parkway, coconuts are cool and the cave aswell 3, banshee boardwalk, spooky fun vibe 2, rainbow road music is great and I’m always mesmerised by the fireworks 1, bowsers castle, the best bowsers castle in the series and one of the best tracks in the series aswell
My top 3 for Mario Kart 64; 1. DK Jungle Parkway - I love the visuals of this course, especially the steamboat. It's a nice reminder to the past when that mode of transport was very heavily used. Playing on 150cc and trying to cut corners on this track resulted in me getting pelted by Durians a lot of the time 🤣 2. Bowser's Castle - fantastic visuals, I really appreciate the statues and paintings of Bowser everywhere throughout the castle and in the garden. It's like someone is trying to tell me something about who lives here but I can't quite figure it out... 3. Kalimari Dessert - I know everyone will think I'm crazy but I just love the old western theme of the dessert and steamtrain, along with the relaxing theme tune that plays in the background. Plus my friends and I would try get over the tracks before the train would hit us and that was always an adrenaline rush of excitement and made for some funny moments if we got hit.
yoshi valley is always been one of my favorites. the randomness of the course, and the chaos of playing on it with friends will never get old. also rainbow road. its very competetive i think, the long amount of time gives everyone a chance to fight for first and just grit your teeth as you see the lighting bolt
1. Toad Turnpike 2. Bowser's Castle 3. Wario Stadium 4. DK Jungle Parkway 5. Koopa Troopa Beach 6. Moo Moo Farms 7. Yoshi Valley 8. Sherbet Land 9. Royal Raceway 10. Kalimari Desert 11. Banshee Boardwalk 12. Rainbow Road 13. Mario Raceway 14. Luigi Raceway 15. Frappe Snowland 16. Choco Mountain I'm pretty set on my top 5, the others would possibly change a bit if I think more about how to rank them.
Glad to see you back brother. I hadn't realized you'd made a comeback until I was about to bring my 64 back out and wanting to play this game... So sorry for your loss. Very glad to see you took the time off you needed!! 👊
I had never made the Kraftwerk connection with Toad’s Turnpike, but I can totally hear it now. It also reminds me somewhat of Brian Eno’s Music for Airports.
@@n64glennplant That’s a tough one to answer! It changes all the time, but today, I’ll give the slight edge to Radio-Activity-even if I don’t think it’s objectively their best. How about you?!
I remember eating slightly microwaved mud cake so that the icing turns to fudge with hot sponge and racing through Choco mountain, it was like I was racing through the course with my mouth open. Also messing around with the train in Kalimari Desert and trying to see if there was some sort of secret with Peach's Castle.
I loved that you played Wario, and talked about the jump on wario statdium Glenn. The last video I commented on of yours, was you speaking about the memories you had with your dad. Wario's Voice reminds me of my dad, and the course. Love this video!
Mario Kart 64 is my favourite game. Such a fun time, and the best multiplayer mode ever made imo. My favourite track is Wario Stadium. Great video as usual!
Really good and fair ranking sir! Great job! My favorites: 1. Mario Raceway 2. Koopa Troopa Beach 3. Sherbet Land 4. Royal Raceway 5. Bowsers Castle Beach is there just for the atmosphere and music and good times multiplayer. Others have my favorite track sections and turns. I really like them in time trials too because of that. DK Jungle Parkway is nice, but it struggles in multiplayer a lot. Its hard to control when the frames dip low. Toads Turnpike is fine also, but I do like those sections with tricky corners, and Turnpike is more about adjusting to the seemingly "random" traffic more than taking the turns skillfully as its just figure eight in the end. I don't enjoy Warios Stadium. Its bad for time trial after you figure out how to shortcut it. Its long. And its longer if somebody messes you up with a lightning bolt. And that will happen and I do consider it a bit unsportsmanlike nasty trick personally.
FUN FACT: My friend for years thought Banshee Boardwalk was called Banshee BROADwalk, and when he discovered it we were all in hysterics - he did what he imagined to be a "broad walk" to justify it, which was hilarious. Classic game!
Donkey Kong, Luigi and Bowser are my favorites in every Mario Kart game for no reason other than I like those characters in the latest installment I enjoy playing as King Boo because he's such a fun character and I'm a Halloween holiday lover.
@@n64glennplant Mario Kart 7 and 8 on 3DS, Wii-U and Switch are all fun to play. The 3DS XL was the first Nintendo system I've owned since my mother bought me a N64 and it resparked my love of Nintendo and that was back in January of 2016 a month later I bought a Wii-U and in 2020 I bought a Switch. I still have my PS4 but I play more Nintendo nowadays than anything. Thanks for the reply and have a nice day.
Koopa Beach is certainly one of the Skill Vs Luck combinations that makes it a great course in my view. You need luck to get the mushroom and not have it stolen on you by a Ghost. Then you need to line up perfectly with the ramp without being hit by opponents that may be in your way or any items that may have been dropped in line with the ramp. Do both of these things, you get the short cut.
I was ALWAYS Yoshi and my favorite map was all of the battle maps lol. Ok, seriously I'd probably have to go with Rainbow Road aesthetically and Koopa Troopa Beach to play.
my top 5 is based off 4 player experience with other people who know the maps / know how to play 1: moo moo farm 2: wario stadium 3:jungle parkway 4:yoshi valley 5: choco mountain
When you suggested commenting our personal favourites, Koopa Troopa Beach immediately came to mind! I'd have to think more about where exactly to put it, and what other tracks would rank highly. But KTB is a great mix of great visual and audio design, track length, and the right dose of difficulty to be accessible without being dull. Other faves that came to mind are: DK Jungle, Royal Raceway, and Bowser's Castle I'm not a huge fan of Toad's Turnpike though. I may be misremembering, but didn't the cars drive towards the player in mirror mode? I feel this has soured me on this track (and all subsequent ones with traffic). Regarding drivers: As a kid I also preferred Toad. I think for kids the quick acceleration is a big appeal (I also played Tipsy in DKR). But as I got older, I tended to prefer heavier characters, because the higher top speed seemed more appealing, and the slower acceleration and stiffer handling could be overcome with skill. I think what tipped me over the edge in this regard was Rosalina in MK Wii. I just loved the absurdity of this serene matronly figure on a dirt bike! I have to say though that I paid dearly for this preference when playing the regular all-track races with my friends. It turns out accelerating after being hit by items is quite a bit more important against skilled players ;). If I went back to MK64 nowadays, I would probably give Bowser or Wario a go, though I'd have to see just how well they perform. (Also, I would probably much prefer DKR!)
Yeah it’s probably why I liked tiptup in DKR too because he’s similar to toad in that sense only I never ventured away from tiptup but I eventually moved to wario in MK64
@@n64glennplant It's been a while since I last played DKR, but it was almost entirely to complete the single player. Because I wanted to get 100% in everything, I started with unlocking Drumsticks and TT. After that TT was the obvious choice for the rest of the game. I recall as a kid sometimes switching to Banjo. Mainly for the bosses, since I reckoned I could make better use of the higher top speed. But it might simply be that the smaller characters have an advantage in DKR compared with MK64. Maybe because of the overall track design, maybe because of the items. Dunno honestly.
3rd place: Koopa Troopa Beach 2nd place: Bowser's Castle 1st Place: Toad's Turnpike Toad's Turnpike gets so intense in Mirror Mode as all the cars that were a bit of a nuissance in the other ccms turn into a real hazard which will frustrate your less talented friends but once you play with only good players it gets real fun
My top favorites are definitely Koopa Troopa Beach, Royal Raceway, Bowser's Castle, Banshee Boardwalk, DK's Jungle Parkway, Toad's Turnpike, Kalimari Desert, and Moo Moo Farm (yes, I just love half the courses of "course"). Also, you guys should check out a video where Bathaniel Nandy checks out a mod of Mario Kart DS where he plays through each version of Rainbow Road throughout the years but in DS.
Why do you hate Christmas, Glenn? jk, jk, this was an entertaining list, and I agree, Wario Stadium is historically underrated Edit: Yeah, I can hear the Autobahn similarities too. I suspect you edited it so that the musical cue that was most similar would be heard right after you mentioned it.

@@n64glennplant Partially because its a childhood favorite. A friend and I would spend time going through the tunnel the train went through and playing chicken with the train. And the hills and turns towards the finish line always made it a clench to see who'd choke or win.
Koppa Trooper Beach requires no apologies! I love the multiple shortcuts that can be taken & the Blue Shell which sits at the top of the large rock, all of which plays into a risk vs reward factor.

Yeah in this era his voice was amazing wasn’t it
Dude put moo moo farm and Wario stadium above Bowser's castle
lol I assumed you ment track as in song - dont know why. Song is Rainbow road but my favorite track is Moo moo farm just due to the fact that it feels like your going so fast on that track.
Yeah moo moo has a lovely sense of speed at any CC level I think!
With Mario Kart 64 being my first ever racing game, I played it to death - both single player and multiplayer - and for that reason every track seems to have some redeeming quality thanks to the power of nostalgia (yes, even Choco Mountain!).

Don’t forget the ???????? For race positions so you never know where you’re ranked!

1. DK Jungle Parkway - I love the visuals of this course, especially the steamboat. It's a nice reminder to the past when that mode of transport was very heavily used. Playing on 150cc and trying to cut corners on this track resulted in me getting pelted by Durians a lot of the time 🤣
Beach is there just for the atmosphere and music and good times multiplayer.
Yeah I guess any of the track with secret glitch shortcuts are weak for time trials as it pretty much defeats the point right

Koopa Beach is certainly one of the Skill Vs Luck combinations that makes it a great course in my view.
You need luck to get the mushroom and not have it stolen on you by a Ghost.

Other faves that came to mind are: DK Jungle, Royal Raceway, and Bowser's Castle
I'm not a huge fan of Toad's Turnpike though.
