After watching this, there are SO MANY other directions she could have gone in the late 70s - I am impressed she chose that one. We loved it

Nice video with many exotic consoles that were previously unknown to me. The video is now 3 years old. 3 years ago the Switch game library was still under construction. I still get out the Genesis for my grandson to play when he comes to visit. Those were great systems. I still buy games occasionaly for them.
I'm 51, been at the same job for 20 years and I've never outgrown how much I've always loved to play a great video game. And over the decades I've had my mind blown away so many times by how much better and more powerful the newest systems always got. Super Nintendo blew me away. The original Playstation blew me away, PS2 rocked my world and I've been playing Wipeout ever since. The first time I played the Wipeout Omega Collection in VR on my PS4 Pro just might be the single most amazing gaming experience I've ever had. I can't wait to see just how far a leap forward the PS5 and PSVR2 turn out to be.
That's how it usually goes when an industry is establishing itself. Like with phones, cameras, cars, etc, there will be so many companies putting out products at first to claw at the market share, but decades later it'll be down to a select number of companies for each niche of the market.
I guess it's hard to assess the "failure" of the XBox One... I'm a Sony fan myself and was going for the PS4 at launch, it's library being the main reason... Except for Cuphead, I realky don't find XBox exclusives appealing tbh... I don't say the same for the two previous Xbox consoles, great in their own right... My Grandma bought me a Dreamcast when it dropped. It was the first console I had brand new on launch day and I was the coolest kid on the block for about 6 months. Love you Grandma 🙏🏾 🕊
What happened to the Sega Dreamcast was tragic. I had one. It was a great system. The graphics were smooth, unlike previous systems where they were a bit choppy. And it had some good games. It was just too little too late.
It’s lack of dvd rom drive and the inclusion of one in a PS2 was the end of it. They sold well before the PS2 announced that and especially before the PS2 shipped.

To show your dedication to the PS2 you should do “Every PS2 Game Ever Ranked”. The video would be at the very least 5 hours long but it would be a feat one has ever truly accomplished
Figuring an average of 30 seconds per entry (for reference, just to go back and get the total of roughly 4500 games I timed the XBox 360 at roughly 1 minute 20 seconds) it'd be closer to 35 hours.
PS2 had a lot of cross platform stuff that were the inferior versions to the more powerful XBox and Gamecube versions. So just stick to exclusives, I think my favorite exclusive for PS2 which has since been made for other consoles in future generations was Okami. It was at the time, Sony's answer to Zelda and it was awesome.
So I'm not the only one that suffered through Death Stranding's ending? Even mentioning it on Reddit summons a tsunami of pretentious "you don't get it, it's art!" comments.

The 360 is what really solidified my presence in gaming, and it introduced me to some of my favorite games and franchises. I remember spending my whole weekends at my friends house so we could play xbox before my family had enough money to afford one.
360 was my first dive into online gaming and I remember it mostly for that. However, it was also the only console that ever died on me (2 times due to the red ring of death).
I remember being 11 years old in 1991 and going to a “rich relatives” house one night and they had a Neo Geo. Everyone was blown away by it and he had to brag about the cost.

The thing about neo geo was the weight of the game cartridges! Could knock a horse out with one! Lol. Nothing more awesome than playing a arcade version of metal slug at home or king of fighters! Never could afford one but a buddy had one and circuit city had their playable ones up!

If they made ebery snes gsme available on switch and made some controllers for it like they did nes then it would be forced to pass the snes as best for me. But the only reason it would would be because of the snes. So when you consider it it would still be the snes

A3JT may be right. Even though themes (and other features listed above) aren't available yet, that won't mean they won't be released at all. I mean, updates and games do take a lot of time to complete. Imagine what workload gaming companies have. Not only that, but pressure and stress is also prevalent in the gaming industry. And I mean, risks that fail can stuff up the console/game. Ok, so to summarize the waffling, stuff takes time to complete.
Not only that the Switch is popular. And it's not like Nintendo is gonna release another console in the next 3 years like it's previous consoles. They said they'll curb that tradition this gen. Just thought I'd put that in.

This was an incredible history lesson in game consoles-so very well done! I had a Coleco(pronounced ColEcovision among my group), and it had some great games and a lot of great memories. I think even without the game crash, the 800 pound gorilla called the NES I think would have still had its domination, I don't think anything was beating that (and yes I was a Sega fan growing up lol)
Videosmarts!! You just unlocked a very dusty childhood memory but as soon as I saw the bear I yelled “teachin’ Teddy!” Also, I feel like the console knew if I got the correct answer because I remember the red caterpillar lighting up with a buzzer sound if I was wrong and the green lighting up with a bell sound if I was correct; but you’re correct that the tape continued playing just the same either way. Thanks for reminding me of one of my favorite childhood toys!

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet. I'd put much higher weight on historical importance. As such my top 7 would have included the Atari 2600, the NES, and the Super NES. Without these three consoles, videogames may not have become a central part of so many homes. Your video is well-made and worth a watch btw.
Absolutely agree! Also in that spirit Sega Genesis/MegaDrive (Sega's Best!) and ColecoVision (First time we really thought we'd brought the arcade home) should both be higher.
@@ChillHous1979 Look up Colecovision homebrew. The console is a favorite for amateur developers who create games just for the love of it. It also helps that the Colecovision shared similar technology with Sega's early consoles.

You missed an interesting detail about the Creativision console: a hardware expansion made it possible to play all Colecovision games on it, thus expanding its library considerably; in addition to this, it was possible to connect the Colecovision converter to it, thus playing all Atari 2600 games. As a consequence, though its own games were few, the Creativision was, for a certain number of years, the console with the potentially highest number of games on the market.
I must admit there was one console I had not heard of before, but then, I am a mad collector of vintage consoles and already own all but a couple on this list.
Watched the whole video and started really flashbacking in the higher spots. From my childhood faves of Atari 2600, nes, and snes, through teen years of ps1 and n64, to my faves as adult ps2, 3, and 4. Great list! Totally agree with the vast majority of it!
Was thinking the same thing, Kevin. For every dime a dozen pong clone, there were several engineers, developers, artists pouring their hearts into at least trying to make something people loved. Except for anything Philips, they were always trying to just make a quick buck it seemed.
One other benefit the PS2 had, in my opinion (not backed by any data) was that it was the first mainstream console that could also be used to watch movies, as a DVD player. It even had a fully-equipped first-party remote control available for it. This came at a time when DVD players were still relatively new and expensive, and the fact that the PS2 had the ability to play DVDs while also allowing you to play games (especially given its almost full backward-compatibility with PS1 games) was the biggest reason I decided to take the plunge and buy my PS2 even before there were any compelling games made specifically for it.

@@Adamtendo_player_1 I had a lot of good memories with Saturn. As a kid it was pretty revolutionary to see a system tap in to 3D tech when I was used to 2D Nintendo.
The Saturn actually had far more depth than people realised or gave it credit for, because unfortunately most kids and people dismissed it in favour of the PS1, often without ever playing on one. I've always much preferred it to the PS1 (in fact, it's still my favourite machine ever). The console had better all round 3D and 2D, and when the machine was pushed to its capability, it was at least the equal of the PS, or even better (Panzer Dragoon Saga/Zwei, Nights, Virtua Fighter 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Sega Rally were incredible looking, let alone playing). Great RPGs, arcade conversions, first person shooters, fighting games galore, I love it. Don't get me wrong, I've got into the PSX a bit more in recent years, but lists like this often seem to cater to public opinion/popularity (I cannot understand how the PS3 is rated as the third best machine ever). Then again, it's subjective, so each to their own. What I love is that the retro scene is getting some wonderful support nowadays.
When I die my head will rest on my SNES instead of a pillow in my coffin. It's brown and yellow and covered in permanent stains and it rattles oddly when I move it, but I still play Super Metroid and will continue to do so as long as I draw breath on this earth.
I think Dark Wizard on Sega CD was a very unique game and one of my all time games. I think Genesis not being in the top 10 sounds wrong, Sega Genesis was such a good console.
I don’t agree with the Mega Drive not being in the top 10 but I can understand why as the SNES is more highly regarded and because of the Mega Drive’s undeserving reputation for bad audio.
I played Genesis quite a lot as a kid, though never owned one till recently, it has some really banger games even outside the more well known ones, Crossfire, Super Monaco GP, and Roadrash probably being my current top 3.
@@OldSilentHill8 Well the SNES at least was the best selling console of it's generation, but the PS3 really is as mystery. Nice video with many exotic consoles that were previously unknown to me.
The video is now 3 years old. 3 years ago the Switch game library was still under construction.
Today I would rank the switch higher, as it currently offers the best overall package of retro gaming, indie titles and exclusive games for me.

It was too little too early imo.
I loved the system but once I got the ps2 it was basically obsolete

@@unlovableshinshin "it wasn't even that much" it definitely was at the time. This is the era where the economy was getting back onto its feet and people were still picky on what to buy. Also, comparing the price to next gen which is much more advanced in hardware should speak volumes on how overpriced the ps3 was at the time.
Jay WalkZ it cost Sony $800 to manufacture each console, them selling it at $600 is still loosing money. The PS3 was much more powerful than the Xbox 360, that’s why it cost more than the 360
Rip Etika they then reduced the manufacturing costs by 70% making it profitable for them
The switch with home menu themes, party chat, and invites would be absolutely incredible

@@ChillHous1979 Look up Colecovision homebrew. The console is a favorite for amateur developers who create games just for the love of it. It also helps that the Colecovision shared similar technology with Sega's early consoles.
PS2, 3, and 4 all carried me through my childhood. I love the PlayStation’s to death and all of them made the top ten...really shows you how they have consistently hit it out of the park with everything aside from the Vita and the Move
The ps3 was kinda shit tho
The most successful and also the least interesting in my opinion
The Vita is good though, sadly they marketed it with the whole mobile thingiemajig, and also the fact that smartphones where a thing at the point, so only people like me who dont want a smartphone would buy it >_

My buddy Ryan had a Socrates when we were in grade school, that controller/keyboard interface was so confusing at first, but I remember actually enjoying playing it after a while
For everybody wondering, the Dick Smith Wizzard is called that because it was released by Dick Smith Electronics, a company founded by Richard "Dick" Smith. He's a pretty prolific businessman and is well known in Australia. He definitely has a sense of humour about his name too, he sold a brand of matches called "Dickheads" and created a TV commercial using the slogan "I love Dick" although it was banned before it ever aired.

I'm really looking forward to the handheld list to see the Lynx's greatness finally recognized.
I will hand it to Lynx in being ahead of its time in hardware power in a portable console, but not many games I look back on and think that highly of.
I'm pulling for virtual boy to break top 10
It was crazy good, my rich friend had all the cool gadgets like that one.
Spot 51, the Vtech Smile was probably my first games console. I have found memories of it, when it worked. At least for the games I had the gameplay was repetitive (I’d have been about 5 at the time) and later on it would struggle to load and kept crashing
Being there from the very beginning of the home console wars, with the Atari 2600 as my first real 'Home Video Game' this ranking was not only fun to watch but touch basis with items I don't remember ever existed.. Well Done!!!! and thanks for the stroll down video lane....

As a 35+ years gamer, I suddenly feel like a poser considering I hadn't even heard of most of these! This was excellent. Thank you!
I watched the whole video, the first half was really sad, seeing every fruitless labor of love.
Pretty sure most of them were just labor of making money with video games popularity in the 80's/90's lol
@@seveneyes77 Seriously? I guess you weren't there at the time then...
Was thinking the same thing, Kevin. For every dime a dozen pong clone, there were several engineers, developers, artists pouring their hearts into at least trying to make something people loved.
Except for anything Philips, they were always trying to just make a quick buck it seemed.
@@sagebrushrepair Nintendo chose Phillips over Sony as spawned the PlayStation, clearly the biggest blunder in Nintendo History.
@matt fahringer touchy subject huh?
43:20 Ummm, The Tandy Corporation owned Radio Shack. If you ever walked into one you'd see mainly Tandy products, as it was basically a Tandy outlet. The TRS moniker on Tandy computers stands for The Radio Shack.
Dreamcast is personal favorite retro system. It really had stood the test of time
The PS2's rotating badge on the disc drive was the simplest yet most impressive console design choice ever IMHO
Which i personally discovered whole 3 years after i bought the console when i hit it by mistake and rotated. I thought i broken it but then i realized the damn thing actually rotated and i was mouth opened at how great it was and my own ignorance that i just had realized it could do that.
@@SIPEROTH Why does it rotate? It's not like you can use it sitting sideways. That would ruin something, right?
@@JoeCoffee9476 No it wouldn't ruin it. PS2 was actually made so it could work sideways as well. There are even stands you can buy so you can use it standing up on it's side.
I knew that but i haven't thought they would even made the Playstation logo rotate so it can look straight when used standing. So when i discovered it i was surprised i never realised.
@@SIPEROTH you just told me about it... 15 years
The V-Tech Vsmile was my first ever console, when I was a really little kid. Pretty sure it helped foster a lifelong love for video games in me lol. IIRC, because the controller had a hand-shaped part on the side, there was also a version of the controller for left-handed children.
I had a VFlash which I loved growing up. The remotes could be popped up and turned to make them left handed. I wasnt even left handed but I would play that way just for the challenge
Pac Man in the arcade was my first introduction to gaming. The first console I was able to play on was the Atari 2600. This brings back so many memories.
The PlayStation 2 was truly a phenomenon. Glad to have owned one.
It was a console seemingly everyone owned, even the types who weren't hardcore gamers. My gripe is I never felt a personal connection to it.
Buy it wasn't priced fairly at all. It was goddamn expensive. Even after the first price drop, wich was Almost a third of the release price. I still have 2 of em...

You've probably heard this a million times but Coleco (Connecticut Leather Company, go figure) is pronounced Co-lee-co
To be fair their pronunciation of the "le" in Coleco is the same as the "e" in leather.
@@apispraetorium3275 A well known fact however Coleco the company always pronounced it Co-lee-co.
Yeah, the makers of this video lost credibility with me when they kept saying it like that

45:18 So flappy bird is a rip-off of a game that's over 40 years old?
BigManTate7364 yes
Hahahaha, I doubt that a Vietnamese programmer or even any programmer in general would have know about that game and the console since it was something super obscure. It is just a freaky coincidence.
Did a quick search. Looks like the flappy bird clone on that console was a recent homebrew game, because people like homebrewing from ancient obscure consoles I guess?
No, it's a homebrew made for the vc4000 36 years after its release. It was not an original title lol. It was just a gag.
@@azenaku That's hilarious. Nice to see people keeping these old consoles alive lol

"Do you want to go see the beaver?" Why yes. Yes I would.
I actually really liked the sega Saturn 🪐
The system didn’t have a lot of depth to it in terms of games but it felt like a pioneer of next generation gaming at the time.
Playing virtual fighter on that 3D resolution was a new experience for me as a kid and it set the stage for much more polished systems to come.
To this day I still whip out the Saturn sometimes
Saturn is one of the few consoles I never had. I had genesis and then ps1. I never even seen a Saturn in person until a couple years after I got my playstation. With that said I was fairly impressed by it once I seen it. I only remember they had the original tomb raider which i owned on ps1 but i realized even then that the Saturn had been a pioneer to that era of gaming.
Saturn had plenty of depth. So unique
The Saturn is actually a pretty interesting console that back then I passed upon for the PlayStation, but over the years now I’ve seen that it was actually a very good console, but only if you look at its Japanese library which had some cracking title, such as radiant silver gun
Thanks for such a great show!!! That was awesome!!!
I love my Super Nintendo, I’ll never sell it. I’m still collecting for it.
Good for you - heard Apex legends is coming out for it next month ;-)
When I die my head will rest on my SNES instead of a pillow in my coffin. It's brown and yellow and covered in permanent stains and it rattles oddly when I move it, but I still play Super Metroid and will continue to do so as long as I draw breath on this earth.
I wish I still had mine. Lost it when my brother moved and I just happened to be out of town that week.
Eric Farner he took it
I still have snes games
I think Dark Wizard on Sega CD was a very unique game and one of my all time games. I think Genesis not being in the top 10 sounds wrong, Sega Genesis was such a good console.
I thought i was the only one in the world who loved dark wizard. one of my all time favorite games too.
I don’t agree with the Mega Drive not being in the top 10 but I can understand why as the SNES is more highly regarded and because of the Mega Drive’s undeserving reputation for bad audio.
Yeah, I understand SNES being higher, but no way Sega gets left out of the top 10. Criminal.
I played Genesis quite a lot as a kid, though never owned one till recently, it has some really banger games even outside the more well known ones, Crossfire, Super Monaco GP, and Roadrash probably being my current top 3.
Not sure why the PS3 ranked higher than the PS4.
Or the SNES, for the matter.
@@OldSilentHill8 Well the SNES at least was the best selling console of it's generation, but the PS3 really is as mystery. It was outsold by the Wii and barely managed to sell a few units more than 360 by the end while the PS4 sold a lot more and is the king of it's generation as well so the whole thing makes little sense.
