One of the CDI models you displayed (Goldstar) was in fact a 3DO. You can see on the unit itself below the CD drive, it clearly says "3DO Interactive Multiplayer". Alt 25:28 you say 1998 when the year listed onscreen is 1988. The Etch-A-Sketch Animator 2000 did not have 2 displays, the lower panel was like a wacom tablet (but resistive rather than RF), it did not display anything. "A Game Boy Color is a Game Boy." That's just plainly and objectively incorrect when two thirds of the GBC library can't even be played on the GB. Maybe Nintendo didn't do a great job marking which GBC games work on the GB and which don't, but the GBC is a separate system that just happens to be backwards compatible with all GB games and a third of whose games just happen to be backwards compatible with the GB. That does not make it a repackaged GB.
Man, Nintendo's advertising must have really got to you, huh? The fact that 1/3 of the GBC library is frontwards compatible more-or-less proves it's the same system. When has a PS2 game ever been frontwards compatible with a PS1 console, or any console combination like that? If PS2 games could be played on the PS1, with less fancy textures let's say, then people would just say it's a fancier PS1, and they'd be right. Nintendo could have kept doing that, but then sales of the GBC console would have dropped. They're (potential) color-optional GB games that are designed to show an error screen when you pop it in the wrong system. It's all dollar signs - planned obsolescence. Just like how they could have released a new portable console with GBA's graphics in the mid-90s. They were milking it for profits. And it worked. Not that I think it's a bad thing. Geniuses, really.
@@kingdavid7516 Well the GBC was stronger than the base GB, it had better video chip, better cpu and more ram, but obviously they couldnt make it into a completely brand new handheld, cuz the gameboy market was MASSIVE and they were afraid that people wouldnt buy the new handheld and the new games, so they made most of their games for both systems, kind of like what you see nowadays with games like far cry 6 or assassins creed valhalla, theyre both on ps4 and 5, yet the consoles have massive differences. altho tbf it is 100% true that nintendo didnt max out the gbc, it was a really cheap handheld even back when it was released.
@@yagokain4189 Are the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X separate consoles then? They’ve got better video chips, better CPUs, and more RAM than the base models. There are games were optimized for the improved hardware, but could run in a compatibility mode for the older spec. In pretty much any sense, the GBC is a GB Pro (or GBX if you’re a green gamer) 20 years before those were a thing.
@@mrb692 That was my original point, it is not exactly a brand new handheld, but its not the same exact console, just like how the ps4 pro isnt a new ps console, but its not 100% the same as the original ps4.
As someone who's owned EVERY PSP, gamegear and Gameboy/DS that's been released in the West, from the early 90's to 2021, the best handheld without a doubt is the Switch. Nintendo killed it with the Switch. And I can't wait for a Switch "Pro" or next gen Switch! A very VERY close second though was the GameBoy Advance SP!
The switch is great but Nintendo kind of pigeonholed themselves because now they have to make their consoles handheld or they'll lose that part of the market don't get me wrong I personally hope they keep up with what they're doing with the switch it's the best console they've made since the snes in my view. Design wise not software wise n64 and snes are tied when it comes to Nintendos best software until the switch.

The Virtual Boy was addictive as heck though. I played one once, in 1996. I was in my dorm room and one of my roommates had one so I borrowed it. Twenty minutes later I took it off and discovered that six hours had passed in the real world, and I was also pretty much blind.
I knew it was gonna be low but the pixter was actually a very good handheld. Coming from someone who was low income, it was a lot of fun and something I used for years. I’ve even been looking for one to have again
The Neo Geo Pocket Color was the Dreamcast of portables. That thing had an insane battery life, one of the best sticks on a portable period and a great collection of games. I'd argue that Match of the Millennium is the best fighting game on a portable system pre-PSP hands down. It's easily better than the Game Gear library wise in terms of quality. Hell, I'd say it was better than the Vita in terms of actual support because at least SNK made games for it. It's such a shame it died the way it did.
My very first handheld was Gameboy which came out when I just started college. My roommate ended playing my Gameboy more than me. He became obsessed with Mario World (I think that was the title). Me, I loved playing Tetris on the go. Since then I bought almost every Nintendo handheld, skipping only gb color, gb micro, and dsi.
What I liked about the DS so much (next to its fantastic games of course) was the touchscreen. Having something like that as the main gimmick of a console often ends up in disaster, because games try to build around these gimmicks too much. It's interesting at first, but becomes more annyoying than anything else very quickly, which is something Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move struggled with a lot. But most DS games used the touchscreen a lot more subtle, for example for displaying extra information, having the menu constantly on it which then can be used via touch, or for occasional mini games. It enhanced the gameplay a lot, without becoming annyoing, because most games could still be played mostly with the controller buttons.
i actually had a didj as a kid (i was like 8 when i got it), and tbh it wasn't actually too bad. i also had a leapster, and the didj felt far more responsive and modern in comparison. some games were better than others, but i specifically remember having a lot of fun with the spongebob and nicktoons games, as well as the jetpack game that came pre-installed.
I remember the Gamepark GP32. I daresay that it's the first open-source emulator handheld, which we now see coming from small Chinese companies making systems like the Anbernic RG350 and Retroid Pocket. I wish I still had mine with me. I bought one at the Shin Yongsan electronics market in Seoul back in 2002.
Had a Supervision back in the early 90's, when it was briefly a clear no.2 to the Gameboy in the UK market. It Had a decent amount of games that even small games shops sold (I remember finding a dingy place that had them in a Skegness sidestreet). The ability to bend the screen up a bit was useful due to the lack of any meaningful backlight. It also had a system link for 2 player games, if you could find someone else who had one. That thing ate up batteries though. I remember getting it for Xmas, playing for a couple of hours and it dying on me way before bedtime.

Game Boy should be referred to as a GBC, because by god it was superior in every way, it had color, it lasted longer via batteries and it wasnt murder on your wrists to hold onto for hours.
I agree. I hate when I see game boy and game boy color being placed together instead of being separated. There were at least 100 exclusive gbc games that you couldn’t play on a game boy
Yeah, I hate that misconception. It used twice as fast CPU, had way more RAM and most importantly had color screen and its own game library (for the most part incompatible with the original Game Boy, although all Game Boy games were compatible with GBC). The DSi still technically counts as different console as well, since it had its exclusive software/games, but aside from the new fancy operating system, it didn't matter that much I think. I don't remember about caring about anything other than playing DS games on my DSi, maybe aside from excellent Flipnote Studio app.
29:30 I actually remember owning one of these things when I was like 8 years old. It actually contained my first Sonic game so it took me a while (i.e. 8 more years) to realize Sandopolis and Emerald Hill were from different games lol
I loved my Nokia N-gage. It was my primary phone for years that acted like a smartphone at a time when every one else had Blackberries. It was possibly the only phone of its time with proper gaming controls. At $500 it didn't sell but once Gamestop blew them out for $50 and all the game carts for $1 I bought them up and used that phone up until smartphones could match its capabilities, which for me wasn't until the IPhone 4. It had some kind of PDA OS that gave it a huge library of home brew apps like an early mp3 player and other stuff other phones didn't. The external SD card slot was great for easy game swapping or expanding the phone with home brew apps. Underrated device that should rank much higher on this list. It failed only due to its outrageous initial release price.
Yeah I was depressed at the amount of garbage consoles ahead of the ngage on this list. It did sell a bit and actually had a decent library of actual quality games.
The 3DS was a fun system, I loved that thing. Still have it, although I hardly ever use it. Being able to take 3D pictures and videos, including time lapse videos, was a blast. I set that thing up in my window one night and had it take one picture every minute or something like that, then played it back in the morning. It was super cool watching the sun set, the clouds float past, the moon zip overhead, and then the sun rise in the morning. All in 3D. The multiplayer stuff was fun too, I was going through a divorce at the time and the friend group was kind of hands-off on both of us not knowing who to support, so the ability to just kind of chat and send hand-drawn messages to total strangers kind of theraputic.
I legitimately got a SuperVision for Christmas one year. I still have it in my cupboard in fact, though the screen has a diagonal crack in it now... (I did indeed eventually get a GameBoy, in case you were wondering) Great video as always, guys!
Oh my god, the My Life console gave me flashbacks to when I desperately wanted one but my parents couldnt afford it, so I never got it. Now seeing it 14 years later, I’m glad my parents didn’t spend any of their money on that shit.

Alt 25:28 you say 1998 when the year listed onscreen is 1988. The Etch-A-Sketch Animator 2000 did not have 2 displays, the lower panel was like a wacom tablet (but resistive rather than RF), it did not display anything. The gameplay footage of the GP32 is actually from the successor, GP2X. Incidentally one wonders why the Evercade and Neo Geo X had 16x9 screens when their entire library of games were all in 4x3.
With the Evercade it makes sense seeing as it's a modern console and 16:9 screens are probably cheaper than custom outdated 4:3 screens.

@@FurryMetalFerretVT SO was the PSP. Damn Sony. Also, I do love my Vita. Especially now that it's 100% hackable in any state. I have like 4 of them. My favorite is a weird tanish-green one. I bought one when it launched, the 3G version, got my sim in it, and whatnot, but they never let me redeem the free House Marquee game for it, can't remember what it was called. I ended up playing it later, and it was alright. Basically Geometry Wars on a sphere. EDIT: ALSO, annoyingly enough, not many people know this but SONY crippled the display on the LCD model. Which thanks to hacking, you can fix. The LCD model was noticeably more de-saturated than the OLED and people just assumed it was fine, it wasn't. Apparently Sony changed a REGISTRY value to make it duller. Undoing it, makes the games look IMMENSELY better and vibrant. NOT OLED vibrant, but more natural. Another example of SONY kneecapping their own hardware.

Tbh, a lot of this video is simply rewording Wikipedia and a handful of articles.
Cool to see the Evercade so high up the list. Really enjoy that system, and nice to see it get some recognition :)
after hearing leapfrog a 3rd time "OH COME ON!!!"
"A Game Boy Color is a Game Boy."
That's just plainly and objectively incorrect when two thirds of the GBC library can't even be played on the GB. Maybe Nintendo didn't do a great job marking which GBC games work on the GB and which don't, but the GBC is a separate system that just happens to be backwards compatible with all GB games and a third of whose games just happen to be backwards compatible with the GB. That does not make it a repackaged GB.
I’ve literally just made the same comment as yourself, without reading yours. Why do so many think it’s the same system?
First entry and there’s a Candle Cove reference. This is why you’re the best.
I think that the ultimate Nintendo hand held that's not the switch is the ds.
Can Nintendo switch emulate all the other old game consoles?
@@rolanddes Sure if you hack it. It'll run all the classics great, struggles with N64 (which is a common problem)
@@ScriptCatz I think it was the 3DS I’d it counts it has many of the best games in its respective series like animal crossing and zelda.

I knew it was gonna be low but the pixter was actually a very good handheld. Coming from someone who was low income, it was a lot of fun and something I used for years. I’ve even been looking for one to have again
The TurboExpress is the most impressive handheld for it’s time by far. That thing was a beast of a machine but built to last as well.
It was a current gen console on hand held. The closest thing to release since is the PSvita and Switch.
Except for LoZ Phantom Hourglass where you controlled Link with the touchscreen.
"look at it; bright yellow, guaranteed to be struck down before its time."

so, I _have_ a Game Gear, and let me just say, the blur isn't actually that bad
i actually had a didj as a kid (i was like 8 when i got it), and tbh it wasn't actually too bad. i also had a leapster, and the didj felt far more responsive and modern in comparison. some games were better than others, but i specifically remember having a lot of fun with the spongebob and nicktoons games, as well as the jetpack game that came pre-installed.
These massive ranking videos must be a massive pain in the ass... but I love 'em. Thanks!
The fact the R Zone didn't rank at the bottom has me nervous
Slight correction - while the Goldstar GPI-1200 was a Korean made portable version of the Philips CDi, the image used in 7:09 is the Goldstar 3DO. Goldstar's take on another failed console.

@@stevesteve0521 yeah, if anything the Game Boy should be referred as the GBC, because the GBC was the superior model to that oversized paperweight.

The Gameboy colour is separate from the original gameboy. It has its own games.

The game and watch was pretty great, but it doesn’t really fit for this list’s rule
Hot take: I actually think the 3DS is better than the Game Boy. The Advance is superior and the DS rules supreme, though.
I legitimately got a SuperVision for Christmas one year. I still have it in my cupboard in fact, though the screen has a diagonal crack in it now... (I did indeed eventually get a GameBoy, in case you were wondering)
