  • Debuting in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System in Japan, The Legend of Zelda didn’t just serve as that system’s killer app; it became a sensation worldwide, helping to propel the NES to must-have status in the West and establishing Nintendo as one of gaming’s most important developers. Of course, with so many sequels and spin-offs, not all of them can be created equal. But don’t worry! We are here to tell you which games are better than which other games and by exactly how much. Here is Every Legend of Zelda Video Game Ranked from Worst to Best.

      On the bright side of the worst Zelda games (which is the CD-I duology, or trilogy, I’d counting ZA), if there’s one thing Link: The Faces of Evil & Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon has that Zelda’s Adventure doesn’t which makes it 33rd place at the very highest (which is less than 4% close to the top from a literal standpoint), otherwise, it’s dead last at #34 on my list (if not everyone else’s because I think this game is actually underhated, even for a poorly received game) because of its existence alone as the only CD-I Zelda game and that even on its own, it has nothing good to offer (like I said, I hate LTFOE/ZTWOG, but as unfinished as they are, at least their cheap cutscenes are RUclips Poop material!) makes the rest look as good as any other Zelda game (especially the remakes)!

      I know! I think TP's art style is absolutely gorgeous, especially in the HD release. SS definitely has its problems with repetitiveness and the emptiness of the sky (I personally never had any problems with the motion controls once I learned it only took short, succinct little movements of the wrist and that's it), but I always thought it had a fantastic story along with one of the most underrated villains and one of the most unappreciated side characters _of all time_ with Ghirahim and Groose respectively!

      @@kriscynical groose ended up being such a great character. He had so much character development and managed to make one of the most boring battles in the game incredibly fun. I kinda wish he had gone through the door of time at the end and spent his days with the younger Impa so that she wouldn’t be alone for all those years. All the time he spent with the older impa seemed like it was hinting at that. I think that would’ve been a fitting and heart warming ending for his character.

    It never ceases to make me sad to see how few other people love Skyward Sword. It had some glaring flaws, I concede that fully. But it also had some of the most compelling character writing in the entire series. SS had one of if not the strongest Zelda-Link relationships in the series, an exceedingly memorable Impa rendition, and Groose, who had an incredible character arc.
    Beyond that the art style was stunning, had my favorite Zelda soundtrack to date, and what I found to be one of Zelda's strongest narratives.
    The narrative driven stories found in entries such as Ocarina and Twilight Princess are what makes LoZ so special to me and SS had that in spades.
    I remember finishing my first playthrough of Breath of the Wild and feeling thoroughly unfulfilled as a game that was a marvel in game and world design served as a vessel for a hollow and disconnected story delivered in small bursts that never met the potential I believed it held.
    Shortly after finishing BotW I booted up my Wii and played through Skyward Sword to get the fix of Zelda storytelling I was craving and fell right back into Skyward Swords story. And ever since has solidified itself in the rotation of classic Zelda titles such as OoT, TP, WW, and MM that I revisit when I'm feeling nostalgic.
    I recognize that the ship has sailed at this point, but I sincerely hope the many quality of life improvements provided by the Switch remaster compels people to give SS the second chance it deserves. Because it has more than earned it.

    • @frantschou2369
      @frantschou2369 Год назад +1

      I did give it a chance and although i enjoyed it, i wasn‘t blown away by it and the more 3D-Zeldas i‘ve played, the more i‘ve realised how out of breath the devs where when they made it. People disappointed with Botw often say that they wish the traditional Zeldas back, not realising that, at some point, they just cannot reinvent the wheel anymore and in no game is that as apparent as on SS.
      While the game had one of the more interesting narratives, it felt like most of the creative effort went into that, at the cost of everything else. None of the dungeons felt really creative except for the pirate ship and the ancient cistern.
      I think the fact that you fight the forbidden one *3* (!) times speaks volumes about the whole game. The fight itself is quite boring and doing it 3 times is 3 times as boring, even if it slightly changes every time.

    • @cmstr16
      @cmstr16 Год назад +2

      @Fräntschou There can be no doubt that the classic Zelda formula had been stretched to it's limits by the time SS came around and it suffered from a race against the death clock of the Wii itself. It has glaring weaknesses and you are right, The Imprisoned is a personification of those weaknesses.
      All that being said I don't feel as though Ancient Cistern and the ship were the only enjoyable dungeons. Most of the others lacked a level of originality that anyone would look for, but overall I think most were passable Zelda dungeons. And the story was compelling enough that I personally never felt like putting it down, even when I was bored fighting The Imprisoned for the second and third time.
      I absolutely agree that the Zelda series needed a lot of change, change that Breath of the Wild brought. I simply wish that it hadn't come at the cost of a driving narrative that felt like it served as a through line for the experience. BOTW is a game I love, a game I have put many many hours into, but it's not a game without flaws of it's own.
      Beyond the subjective matter of whether or not any one person believes the environmental storytelling and short bursts of flashbacks formed a compelling Zelda story, I also look at dungeon design. As much as we could sit here and criticize SS' dungeons I think BOTW is even worse in this area. The divine beasts are monotone, extremely short, and exceptionally easy. By the time I was walking into the fourth divine beast, it felt like a chore that I had to tick before getting back to the parts of the game I enjoyed so much. People often excuse this because of the shrine system, but honestly the vast majority of the shrines, with some glaring exceptions, felt tried and boring. By the time I was even halfway done most of the shrines felt rehashed if they weren't simply another combat trial.
      SS has it's problems and I in no way believe that Zelda should have stayed linear. BOTW brought innovative, exciting, and necessary change to the series, but it also came at the cost of much of what made me fall in love with Zelda in the first place. At the end of the day it's all subjective, I just happen to believe SS has more than enough strengths to make up for it's weaknesses.

    Skyward Sword walked so BoTW could run. The stamina bar (no more rolling or side hops everywhere), crafting, and the art style (cell shaded but less cartoonish than Wind Waker) were really innovative for the series at the time, and their inclusion in BoTW helped to make that game into such a masterpiece. Not to mention that Skyward has some of the coolest dungeons and boss fights in the series (except for the Imprisoned, those fights can get in the bin).

    Whoa there's so much I disagree with this list. Skyward Sword WAY too low. I literally never had any problems with the controls (plus the HD version has an option for button controls) and Fi very rarely solves puzzles for you. I get liking it the least of the 3D Zeldas, but putting it number 22 and below Four Swords and a bizarre Tingle spinoff? Definitely not. Same thing with Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, and Zelda 2. They're not the best in the series but they're certainly better than a side mode added to a GBA port of A Link to the Past (which is far more Bowser's Minions than Bowser's Fury). Twilight Princess is also way too low and putting it below Four Swords Adventures is a crime. IMO Twilight Princess is easily better (or at least as good) as Ocarina of Time. Lastly, I disagree with putting Breath of the Wild at number 1. It's a really great open world game, but it's missing a ton of things that I love the Zelda series for.

      I agree. especially with BOTW. It added a lot of cool new things, but also left out SO MUCH that has become classic. Being different from the norm can be great but....BOTW felt weird to me. The dungeons were neat, but they all looked the same, and didn't come with any sick music. Same with the bosses. I know the point of BOTW is to be open and calm, but I miss the grand musical scores. I had to turn up my volume on my tv and my switch (handheld mode) just to BARELY HEAR the Zora Domain music. Like what?? The shrines also got repetitive af. I've managed to get all 100 gold skulltulas. I've gotten every heart piece in every other zelda game I've played. But BOTW? No. Heck no. I have no motivation to do so, aside from needing a butt load of health because 1 hit in the beginning of the game will KO ur azz. Might be more realistic but it actually made me NOT want to explore, cuz I knew damn well I'd be dying every few minutes.

      I always say that BotW is a decent open world game (not the best, for that I find the World too empty), but it's not a good Zelda game. I'm not against trying out new things. But the story was so weak, considering that Zelda games are often heavily story based. And since you don't have to follow one bit of the story (you can skip all memories, all divine beasts etc) shows how much the game is lacking in story. Also, change the names of the characters and locations and it could have been any other adventure game. No one would have noticed.
      TP, even though not the first Zelda I played, is by far my favourite game.

    If BotW 2 is able to make a few changes like weapon durability (many different options other than 99.99% break), some quality of life changes for crafting, and if we're really lucky some dungeons, it could possibly top Ocarina of Time for me. For now, OoT is still by far #1 for me.

    • @nickn271
      @nickn271 2 года назад +16

      Agree completely. BOTW had some major missteps that holds it back from being higher for me. As you said fixing weapon durability and adding proper dungeons are a must. I also got tired of seeing the same enemies in BOTW over and over and over again. We need greater variety depending on their location.

    • @ianphillips103
      @ianphillips103 2 года назад +1

      I think what makes it so frustrating to me is that OoT should have been surpassed years ago but there is always something holding the games back. Wind Waker was too easy and the Triforce hunt....don't get me started, Twilight Princess had some cool dungeons on initial playthrough but the bosses I always felt lacked any challenge, Skyward Sword has the best dungeons and the worst everything else, and BoTW is everything I wanted exploration wise, but the actual meat of any Zelda game is the dungeons and the items and both are lacking outside of the weapon variety, which I appreciate but unfortunately every weapon breaks after like 15 hits. Majora's Mask is obviously an outlier in a lot of ways when it comes to 3D Zelda and I love the fact that it didn't try to copy Ocarina's story threads which every 3D Zelda game tried to emulate. So I think I love Ocarina and Majora's equally, but I agree with both of your points that if BoTW 2 is able to fix things that makes BoTW fall behind to me then yes absolutely we are looking at the best 3D Zelda game ever made.

    Even from a subjective standpoint, you guys did TP dirty (and at least flush if you're going to). How is it fair to harshly criticize this game's graphics while praising WW's, yet showcase the original version of TP and the HD version of WW (especially since these two were released AND rereleased on the same consoles)? If anything it should've been the other way around to illustrate your point about WW's art style. TP had very arguably the best dungeons in the franchise along w/ OoT, best supporting characters, best story development along w/ SS (also fairly underappreciated), best OST, etc.
    Besides that nothing outlandish, although I do hold the Oracles are the best of the GB Zeldas, not the worst, but it's undeniable they're all exceptional so I can't fault anyone's preference in that debate.

    • @mrkekskopf5904
      @mrkekskopf5904 2 года назад

      I feel like this got way too carried away and into detail and I put way more of my general frustration about the discourse around Zelda games into this than your comment warranted. So sorry about that in advance. I read your comment with less good faith than was warranted, so please don't see this as a personal criticism. But I put way too much time into writing it, too not post it anyways. I still stand by these things in general regardless. Tone and context just aren't really warranted without this disclaimer.
      The choice of showing the HD graphics is misleading and feels really weird to do considering how little if at all the models and textures were changed for the HD version of WW, but I feel like the point wasn't even made strong enough. WW looks so much better on GC the comparison feels almost insulting to me. There is a reason for WW basically just getting higher resolution and different lighting for the remaster, while a lot more had to be changed for TP. The characters in TP feel so uncanny and the world looks so unappealing, especially on GC. It's the style of graphics that made so many games look so bland and samey ever since 3D graphics came up. In general stylized graphics often look more unique and tend to age a lot better. It feels like we're slowly reaching a point where graphics are becoming close enough to real life for this to matter less, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few years from now most people would look back at games now and laugh at the thought. I think for example the choice of art style for the LA remake was brilliant. It's heavily stylized and it fits the game's story and theme perfectly. To me Mario 64 looks way better than OoT and MM, even though Nintendo knew the hardware better when they were made. At least that's how I feel about the graphics and I know I'm neither alone with that feeling, nor is it a universal one.
      What dungeon design you like is subjective too. In Zelda games it will for example heavily depend on how you like what GMTK in Boss Keys (which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it, to me a must if you're into Zelda) calls "follow the path dungeons" and "find the path dungeons". If you like more challenging dungeons will depend on things like your age, your familiarity with Zelda games or games in general and if you're playing to be challenged. And even more specific, do you prefer to be challenged in combat skills, puzzle solving or both.
      While I agree with TP having a great OST, even that is subjective. I feel like the best example for that is BotW. So many fans of the series were really disappointed with it, while I feel like it is absolutely perfect for the game. The most impact of a piece of music in a game on me was when I visited Rito Village the first time and just stood still for a while to listen to the music.
      As I feel like I've made clear already, a lot about all of these games is just subjective, but especially when it comes to story. I for example loved what they did with Age of Calamity and a lot of people were really pissed, while I would have been really disappointed with what most of them said should have happened instead. I love the stories in BotW, MM, WW and SS, but don't really like them in OoT and TP, which is definitely controversial from the comments I've gotten when saying these things. But that won't change my opinion. I know most Zelda fans would disagree with me saying MC is better than ALttP, but that's just my opinion, not doing it dirty.

    The real fun in the first Legend of Zelda is repeat playthroughs. The game allows the player to go where they want from the start. It allows the player to take on more dangerous foes and get upgrades early, by knowing your way around and the movement/timing/place of each enemy(type). It is pretty easy to go into the first few dungeons destroying everything in your path contrary to the first time you play through it, dying in the first dungeon a few times.

      It has a loud vocal minority that can’t get on with its flaws but it is a masterpiece like GOW RDR2 and TLOU.
      A deserved game of the year when it was released and recently voted as the best game of all time in Japan recently. It’s been praised by gamers, reviewers and many developers so no need to be skeptical at all, really. It deserves first place on yet another list even if you don’t get on with it if you play it.
      It has clear flaws but like all good masterpieces it’s more than the sum of its parts.

    I think people's ranking are highly influenced by the era they were born.
    The time and console they started playing on, and therefor the sentiment that's into play.
    For me personally, as someone born in 1984, i started to play on a NES. And have played Zelda and Link both on the console.
    However i really started heavy gaming when we got the SNES. I have played more hours of ALTTP than all the other Zelda games combined.
    My personal favorites:
    1: Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)
    2: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
    3: Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (2000)
    4: Legend of Zelds: Breath of the Wild (2017)
    5: All the other ones, can't really place them... like them all, but not very wild about them.

    I'm just glad that Zelda 2 is not at the bottom of the list. Yeah it's punishing and can be unfair at times but as a platformer is pretty darn good, and that battle system it's just so rewarding when you figure out enemies' patterns *chef's kisses*. Completing this game also gives you that great feel of accomplishment that not many games offer. And don't forget that most of the important NPC names came after this game (Ruto, Darunia, Nabooru, to name a few). I can keep praising what this game did good and what's to improve, and definitely is not for everyone however it remains an important game in the series nevertheless.

    The disrespect to Skyward Sword and Spirit Tracks. I also find it interesting how often people either rank the Oracle games as one entry or put them back to back. I think Ages is significantly better because of its dungeons. My ranking of the main series would be:
    19. Four Swords - D
    18. The Adventure of Link - C
    17. Tri-Force Heroes - C
    16. Four Swords Adventures - C
    15. Phantom Hourglass - B
    14. The Legend of Zelda - B
    13. Oracle of Seasons - B
    12. Link's Awakening - B
    11. Spirit Tracks - B
    10. Oracle of Ages - A
    9. A Link to the Past - A
    8. Twilight Princess - A
    7. The Minish Cap - A
    6. Skyward Sword - A
    5. A Link Between Worlds - S
    4. The Wind Waker - S
    3. Breath of the Wild - S
    2. Ocarina of Time - S
    1. Majora's Mask - X

    WW and TP are always going to be the most controversial in any ranking. The thing is this is so easy to explain and understand. As was mentioned in the vid, WW is a coming of age story. So basically anyone from the ages of 6-15ish when WW came out tends to rate WW extremely high and thus TP lower. Counter that with anyone 18+ when WW came out rates WW lowerish and have TP much higher, 16th best game is just absurd btw.
    Most content creators are going to be from this group of 6-15 when WW came out and their nostalgia for the game shows. TP obviously has its issues, especially in the early game, but it's mini games, collectables and thematic dungeons all tend to be much better done than WW when looked at objectively.
    Now I am sure there will be some exceptions to this rule, but in general this age difference is why there are such wildly swinging opinions on the two games. What will be interesting is this next generation of content creators/gamers opinions on lists such as these.

    MM is behind OoT because of the visuals. Locations don't fit together well and don't transition into one another in a nice manner. I know that MM had to be made with important time constraints, but that removes much of its charm. Especially when it comes to the temples. They are so ugly!
    Some locations had plenty of potential, like the swamp for example, but they didn't get the time to make them more detailed.
    Think of how Hyrule field colors and shapes slowly transition es into Gerudo Valley, then into Gerudo fortress, and then into the haunted desert. Or think of how the Hyrule Field guides you into Zora's domain and then Zora's fountain. It's a super nice progression. The one exception is the ice cavern (which reminds me a lot of MM lol).
    Otherwise, it's an amazing game, but because of its looks, it cannot top OoT.

    Wind Waker will always be number 1 for me. I personally don’t see what is so dull about the Triforce quest. It encourages you to be set free and go explore the map to find the pieces. And it’s not like it’s all too hard to actually get all the pieces either. The hardest part in the original is getting all the rupees you need. But the game does understand this and usually gives you plenty of opportunities to rack up thousands of rupees through the game especially if you actually take the time to go for the treasure charts. If you do that, it should be easy to afford the charts. In the remake, the swift sail and reduction of how much money you need to pay takes away any reason to complain about the quest. Unless your complaint is that you are forced to explore one of the most beautiful settings in a Zelda game for some reason. Like the rupees part wasn’t great but the remake completely fixed it and that honestly makes one of the best Zelda experiences ever.
