The thing about Lego island is that it encapsulates the attitude of the time. It's really a product of that manic over the top early 90's / late 80's sense of humor that was in other media.

The bad ending was actually shortened and less obnoxious in the final game. Still managed to be traumatizing though, and what the Infomaniac said to the player afterwards never made up for it. I always quit out of the game with the escape key and try again later, whenever I was about to lose.

This deserves so much more viewership. An incredible analysis of a bygone era of Lego that so many of us fondly remember, even if some of it has aged a little bit rough. Rock Raiders and Lego Racers were always my favorites, though Lego Island had its charm too, as a zany adventure that leaned hard into an utterly massive amount of audio for a game of its era.

That perfectly-recreated intro is worth a sub by itself. Also mechanically, Lego Racers is actually more of Diddy Kong Racing rather than Mario Kart specifically, since both games have upgradeable powerups (with DKR you have to run into multiple balloons of the same color, rather than "upgrade balloons")...

Lego Island was one of the three first games I got for PC back in 1997. Over the following years I got Loco and Rock Raiders, those three were the Holy Trinity that I would go back to play again and again. Rock Raiders has to be my favorite and I couldn't beat the 2 second to last missions until I turned 16 and decided that I had to beat it, so I looked it up and realized that you had to kinda exploit some feature to be able to pass.

I think it's also fun to think that we already had a sort of "lego multiverse" with these early games. not only with the classic characters from real sets like Johnny Thunder and friends appearing all over the games (even in recent entries such as the LEGO Movie game) but also with things like... the Super Station Master from LEGO Loco being a part of LEGO Island 2, and The Brickster being visible in that newspaper in the LEGO Racers 2 cutscene. Now, in 2024 (and the past few years too) LEGO is even bringing some of the classic game characters back into video games - Pepper Roni had been previously spotted in an educational Unity thing, and now appears in LEGO Fortnite (yep) while Rocket Racer made his first reappearance in years, and first _actual_ physical appearance as a real LEGO City minifigure also making an appearance in the newer racing game LEGO 2KDrive (it's no Racers, but it's still better than whatever Drone Racers was I suppose). So indeed the future looks a bit brighter with LEGO leaning back into more "original" ideas, bringing back "cult classic" characters, while still maintaining the now-also-classic "licensed game" formula, which honestly _even that_ got a pretty satisfying revamp with the last Star Wars one... it feels new again. Great video by the way with excellent 3D! Even for simple things like the Toy Story 2 scene... didn't have to go hard on it, but you did anyways.

The in-game engine introduction of the N64 LEGO Racers was copied from the demo release of the PC version, which also used in-game renders instead of FMVs. That's probably why it was the only LEGO game on Nintendo 64, as LEGO games at the time relied heavily on FMVs, and LEGO Racers was the only one that could take the easy way out in that regard.

Did you know that in 1991 developer FarLight created a Lego Game and that Lego never used it?
From 1991 to 1992, developer FairLight worked on a Commodore 64 platformer titled Linking Leroy Visits LEGOLAND, expecting the LEGO Group to approve it. If published, it would have been the first LEGO video game. Nonetheless, the LEGO Group never in any way endorsed the game or approved of the usage of the name and logo, and the project was ultimately cancelled

Interesting video. I like how you went over the different game’s strengths and weaknesses. Regardless of their quality it is nice to see that there was variety with Lego games at one point. Let’s hope that with Travelers Tales losing their exclusivity license that games with more variety will appear.
Based on way people talked about Lego Island and the few clips I saw I had imagined it being like Simpsons Hit and Run where it’s a GTA clone that takes full advantage of the source material (in this case the creativity of Legos instead of the Simpsons when it was still good). Looks like I was wrong about that (maybe the newer ones are like that, I haven’t done any actual research into this game). That’s really funny how all those sound effects are so awful. I’d get really annoyed after a while. The bad ending had me floored. I can imagine the studio sounded like that when they fired everyone (I’d be furious if that happened to me seeing this game I slaved over for became a massive success and didn’t get any of the money). The hospital theme is so much better than it has any right to be. Wow!
It would be nice to see a modern reimagining of the city builders. Too bad that probably won’t happen. There’s so much potential with that.
I like how the racing games let you customize your car. It would be cool if they were to release a racing game where in addition to power ups/items you could add all sorts of crazy weapons to your car and do damage to the other racers. There was this one Lego racing theme that had a set up like that where all the cars had crazy designs/weapons.
I’m glad that Baraklava is making Manic Miners. I hope that it will reach a content complete state soon. There’s still a bunch of features that need to be added. As well as mod support and optimization. Let’s hope he also adds the cut content and maybe even the few good things from the PlayStation versions. It would definitely be cool if he made a spiritual sequel/reimagining to Rock Raiders. Luckily the coding base would already be there and he’d just need to add new mechanics/assets. This one guy Zaric Zhakaron (one of my favorite RUclipsrs) was talking about fan games/mods saying that if you’re going to make one you should use that as a testing bed to see what does and doesn’t work, and use the experience gained from that to make your own thing. That way you’d be able to monetize it and would already have a built in audience.
Great video. I noticed that one early 2000s With a Spirit song in the background. It’s a surreal experience hearing those things from when I was a kid. I remember it being used in different RUclips compilations back in the day.

Lego islands is far better than he was giving it credit for.
But honestly, it was Lego Island 2 that was really amazing. The first 1 was good for the time. There wasn't much like it at the time

@@UnderTheMoons You're very welcome! I was referring to the references to the racing sequels post-90's (29:00) but since it is not a direct sequel to the "Racers" series, it probably makes more sense to separate it into a different category. I am looking forward to the 2000's video! Thanks for the quick reply!

Lego Loco multiplayer was so much fun in short bursts but it required a level of network know how that children and most adults struggled with.
