I feel like people give more credit to Wonder when it comes to bringing weirdness back to Mario, but Odyssey is still one of the wackiest Mario games. Bringing a new twist to a lot of the familiar level tropes, the insane capture mechanic, levels with different art styles, tons of new species, vocal themes... I definitely think it was the one to bring weird back to the franchise, and I'm glad so many of the spin-offs followed suit.

      They could still do that some other time, but its not a good fit for their first time back from the grave. 2D animation is expensive, especially if you’re trying to match up to such a distinct style. When I first saw the Mario Wonder trailer in my recommended, I was so sure it had to be a spinoff. It's like 2D Mario, but with some kind of "Wonder" gimmick to make it a fun side adventure to compliment the usual format. When I watched the trailer and had the realization that no, this is actually a brand new main series 2D Mario game with its own full identity for the first time since New Super Mario Bros. and with an insane new gimmick with the Wonder Flower, I was over the moon. Although I've gotten accustomed to it now, first playing the game and seeing all those changes to the animation, music, level design and environments on top of charming little additions as simple as the drumroll on the ground pound, it felt like an absolute fever dream. It was the most refreshing thing ever after nothing but New Super Mario Bros. for literally my entire gaming life.

    6:50 this doesn't seem fair to Galaxy 2. The entire point of the ending of Galaxy 1 was that the universe had been reset, and Bowser's plan was altered just slightly so that in the new timeline, those events wouldn't happen again. Galaxy 2 is quite literally what happens instead of the first game in the current timeline, and it's clear only Mario and Rosalina survive and remember the first game because the Lumas protected them.

    • @maxtubb
      @maxtubb 4 месяца назад +1

      @@jskywalker58 Personally I really don’t think we need a game based on that Mario movie because if being honest I found that movie pretty mediocre and forgettable mainly due to the story being pretty bare bones and sure Mario games aren’t really known for plot but this is film the games don’t have plots because it’s gameplay first and story last but with a film you need an interesting story for the film to keep your audience interested.
      Also Illumination’s involvement in this film does show with their being jokes that don’t always land, reused character models and side characters (Luma) that are only there to look cute and marketable towards kids but doesn’t serve anything to the film but to be fair compared Illumination’s previous films it’s not near as bad as their other films but it is still noticeable.
      Overall the Mario movie isn’t bad but pretty mediocre so no I personally don’t think Nintendo should not make a game based on the recent film.

    10:57 I’m pretty sure it was Alphadream’s decision to remake Inside Story, not Nintendo’s. Alphadream were on the brink of bankruptcy so in a last ditch attempt for some cash, they remade Inside Story because they thought it would guarantee some extra money as it was the fan favourite.
    This is also probably the reason they skipped over remaking Partners in Time. Even though it was the next game chronologically, it just didn't have the same universal praise that Inside Story did, making it risky as that quick cash flow they wanted wouldn't be guaranteed with a less popular game.

    • @NurioMarayana

    I really don't understand why the M&L remakes are always grouped with the Wii U era sections of videos like this when they came out during the Switch era, and while they were on the 3DS and sadly had their drawbacks from the financial struggles of AlphaDream, I really don't think they're the blemish in Mario's history that they're usually framed as. I was over the moon in 2017 when Superstar Saga was coming back, one of my favorite Mario RPGs returning was just as huge to me as Odyssey. 2015 Nintendo would have never. Superstar Saga is one of the weirdest Mario games in history, so is Bowser's Inside Story. The fact that they were able to come back with a modern coat of paint at all is indicative of the shift toward embracing the less conventional side of the Mario series imo. It's just a shame they flopped due to AlphaDream lacking the budget to make them Switch games or reuse less assets. But for what they were they are absolutely part of the Switch's renaissance rather than the Wii U's safeness.

    • @TheRogueMaverick
      @TheRogueMaverick 3 месяца назад

      The original Superstar Saga had been on the WiiU Virtual Console for quite some time actually, but I do think it has a reason to exist. The Bowser's Inside Story one though? That one is death by 1000 paper cuts. It has so many little blemishes that the original game just didn't have that I would never pick it over the original unless I wanted to play to Bowser Jr side story which I personally loved, but not everyone cares about Bowser Jr's character development when picking up a Mario game.

    Yeah, it really is so freakin' AWESOME to have Mario finally return to his quirky, and charming roots after the staleness since the Wii, and DS era much like how his older games were so well known for! It was a shame that Nintendo chose to play it safe since the first New Super Mario Bros. as well as the launch of the Wii (both of which first came out in 2006) in order to cater to a newer audience, which only worked throughout the rest of the 2000's (they should've started adding in more things that made Mario's earlier titles so famous besides just the familiar once the 2010's started. Also think Nintendo should've just gone to High Definition, as well as a reader that can also play movie discs, and TV show discs, instead of just Wii Discs, and GameCube Discs (although it's still nice players can do that) like their competitors rather than just using revolutionary motion controls despite it being a big reason why the Wii became such a huge hit. Same with its name, the "Wii" still made some people think that Nintendo was only for little kids). It's also disappointing that the staleness of Mario's familiarity contaminated his spin-off titles throughout most of the 2010's like Mario Party, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi RPG (the latter 2 ended up creating some of the most disappointing video game crossovers), the Sports games, etc. I am glad that Nintendo FINALLY learned their lesson on keeping Mario safe since the mid-2000's, and brought him back to his old, wacky adventures like his first few installments were that made him a video game legend he is today like recently with Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, as well as other secondary Mario characters getting their own games like Luigi with Luigi Mansion 3 mixing the strongest elements from the first 2 (and a sprinkle from the Mansion 1 3DS remake in 2018, mainly with Gooigi), and transforming it into an unforgettable experience throughout a hotel, and Princess Peach with her first official brand new game in nearly 20 years since Super Princess Peach on DS in 2005 via Princess Peach: Showtime! (although, Peach has fumbled a bit with the latter similar with Yoshi in Craft World)! Mario Party is back again too! Although, the Sports series haven't particularly done well especially Mario Strikers: Battle League, and Nintendo's attempts at celebrating Mario's 35th anniversary went extremely horribly with 3D Collection's baffling lack of content, as well as making both physical, and digital copies limited for basically no reason especially the latter, and removing Super Mario Bros. 35 less than a half-year (and the less said about Nintendo Switch Online with its horrible lineup of games to this day, an app to use voice chat via smartphone instead of through sites like Discord, forcing games on players who aren't interested in certain ones, and the horrible, expensive, pointless Expansion Pack, the better). It's also disappointing that Donkey Kong STILL hasn't had his own brand new game in 10 years, same with Yoshi (speaking of which, can Yoshi finally get his own adventure without any of the Super Mario stuff like enemies, objects, bosses, etc., and mix it in with the original aspects since Yoshi Island such as baddies, levels, music, objects, bosses, characters, and so on, including his own, original advisory that isn't an infant version of his plumber friend's longtime rival? Also hoping that King K. Rool, the Kremlings, and a lot of the older enemies, and objects, as well as the rest of the missing Kong Family members, and Animal Friends return in future new Donkey Kong games), and while it's great that Wario's still been active via Made In Wario games, it's still disappointing that there hasn't been any new Wario Land games in 16, nor a sequel to Wario World, and hopefully there will be with Captain Syrup returning as the main antagonist alongside Waluigi tagging along, and a few MIW characters like Mona, Ashley, etc., as well as having Waluigi in future MIW titles as the manager with an original Made In Wario-style biker outfit like Wario's, and Syrup always causing chaos to take over Diamond City, or something, with also an original outfit for her, albeit a pirate-themed! Nevertheless, it's still really incredible that not only is there a remake for both Mario's first RPG, and Paper Mario's most famous one, but also a brand new Mario & Luigi RPG game for the first time in 11 years, as well as a brand new Mario & Rabbids RPG crossover that turned out surprisingly well, which also had a sequel on the same system, and BOTH having DLC, thus giving Mario FOUR RPG series, and makes me wonder what the future of all these series will be like (maybe a sequel to Legend Of The Seven Stars, a continuation of Paper Mario's well known formula mixed with some modern elements, and so on)! (Though I will say a few things: I think the "console war" nonsense that went on was kind of a Western thing since I'm pretty sure they never did things like that in Japan, Yume Koujou: Doki Doki Panic from my understanding actually was designed to be made as Super Mario Bros. 2 for the US since the OG SMB2 was too difficult for many Western players (even though I think they should've just risked the series' popularity with 2), so it doesn't automatically mean it's unrelated, and I believe the reason why Nintendo stuck with cartridges for the N64 was due to the system being developed at the time when cartridges were still a point of contention.) I look forward to seeing Super Mario's future both mainline, and spin-off! Another excellent Video, Delzethin! And as the Thumbnail said "WE'RE-A SO BACK!"

    So far this decade, the Mario franchise has enjoyed a Renaissance at the cost of the quality of their spin-off sports titles (Tennis Aces notwithstanding).

    I think that Nintendo’s and SEGA’s (when they try) absurdity with their games is what makes them so good and stand out from the cesspool of fps and rpgs we’ve been drowned with in the last decade

    I’m still always gonna be more impressed with Paper Mario’s remake to Mario and Luigi’s comeback. Just because Mario and Luigi always had the chance to return, but I assumed Nintendo was gonna be bull headed in how they approached Paper Mario. Here’s hoping they can both coexist as RPGs again, and that Paper Mario can retain what works from both the modern era and the classic titles.
    Also, DK has been pretty dormant, but everyone pretty much knows about the Donkey Kong Freedom game that was cancelled. Yoshi… is weird, those games I swear just materialize since they just happen whenever. But where is a Woolly World Switch port?
    And speaking of where- Where the heck is Wario Land? Ware is cool, but Land has been MIA for so long.
    But all this aside, I’m happy for the future of Mario. The next 3D game is an exciting prospect, we’re back to not knowing what 2D Mario will do, a new Mario Kart sounds good, Mario RPGs are in a hopeful spot (even if TTYD still concerns me if they’ll backpedal after it), I’m pretty confident DK will return in full force on the next console, and in general Mario is weird and fun again.
    …And Yoshi’s still just gonna continue to happen at random points. No disrespect to Yoshi or his series’ fans, the Yoshi games just kinda never get big talk or hype from what I hear.
    And who knows where other secondary characters will go, Luigi getting more Mansion titles aside.

    I'd like to think it's a mix of both Nintendo pandering to casuals and wanting to prioritize merchandise sales over anything else. Whenever a franchise becomes big enough, the merchandise sales are prioritized first and foremost over the actual product the merch is made for, and the quality ends up plummeting as a result. This is very evident with Pokemon and Sonic, and Mario fell into that trap for quite some time.
    It does feel Mario is going in the right direction though, especially since Nintendo's main competitors are starting to stagnate themselves with "games" that prioritize graphics over gameplay and are little more than overglorified, overpriced, and overly long CGI movies that make you wonder why Pixar and Dreamworks aren't doing the same.

      See also Mortal Kombat… and this also blinds the companies to characters who could actually be great picks for merchandising. I’d buy an Ashley plush on sight. Same with Mona, Captain Syrup, 5-Volt, Shokora, Merelda… ESPECIALLY if they also get them in spinoff games like Kart.
