Great review and tips! Minor point, I think “All” under your AF options doesn’t let the camera choose what’s best (that’s what “Wide” does); rather it allows you to cycle between all AF options via the command dial. It’s actually pretty handy once you get the hang of it. Great channel and images!
This video was super duper helpful! I just got my X-E4 a week ago and played with some 40 shots. The quality is amazing for this price point. The film simulation from Fuji is just beautiful.

Thank you for this video. As a Fuji newbie this has been very useful. Especially the swipe function personalisation. I will rewatch this a few times I think.
Regarding focusing: try to disable auto focus and use back focus button for auto focus only. This way you dont need to keep your shutter button half pressed.
Great video - thanks! I also set the ISO to a ‘swipe up’ (where a dial should be) and I also set the three focus mode options to ‘swipe left’ as that where they would be on my X100 cameras. ‘Swipe right’ for white balance and ‘swipe down’ for film terms.

Thank you for a great video. I have just ordered an X-e4 after fumbling about with a Lumix GX9 and various lenses for a few months. I'm brand new to Fuji so not haunted by the absence of much loved features. This video is very helpful in terms of familiarising me before I have even received my X-e4. *subscribed*
Update: I received my X-e4 today and Ihave crawled through this video numerous times setting my camera up exactly the same as yours as my starting point! It was so much easier than trying to use the manual. :)
I have the same set up, the Lumix GX9, which I absolutely love. I’m so tempted with the X-E4 to complement my GR3, the primary reason being, I miss a viewfinder. I’m new to any Fuji as well. What are your thoughts so far?
@@loushared6602 I feel sorry for my GX9 but I do much prefer the x-e4. It can pull focus faster when shooting people striding past at close range (if that's your thing) (It's my thing) Having the shutter speed on a mechanical dial, and an aperture ring on the lens (probably available on some Lumix lenses but not my three) makes control so much easier. Pictures are sharper. A lot more detail. I can crop into my xe-4 shots in a way I could not with the GX9. Black and white photographs look more like anologue shots than harsh digial files. Film emulators on the xe-4 are really good. I love my GX9, but it's no match. It shouldn't be though, at the grand old age it is, and at less than half the price. Xe-4 all the way for me. That focusing tips was great. I forgot you could use this technique after I switched from Canon DSLRs to the Fuji X-system and started using back-button focus exclusively. I used this technique all the time with my 5D MKII (focus on a subject and then reframe with shutterbutton half pressed, and keeping it half pressed until I was done).
Great video! I’ve been with Fuji for 10 years and can say this is one of the best pieces of advice on how to assign controls to buttons (I like the idea of screen swipe for some settings) and how to get quick focus. Focusing with Fuji remains an issue for me, constantly focusing on the background etc. If Fuji made the XE3 with a flippy screen this would be perfect for me. I dislike the swivel screen on XT4 because it alters the centre of gravity/axle and really slows down street photography. I love my XH1 but keep hitting the Q button by mistake. I love using Russian lenses and Lens Baby on my XH1 for IBIS. Great video. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this video. I think, this one and the other about using Fuji x-e4 for video are those points where I finally made my mind and decided it's a totally right thing to prefer buying this camera instead of buying Sony a6400. The possibility to customise the camera this way in addition to a beautiful picture it gives (I don't like Sony's aesthetics at all) - I understood I will love fuji. Thank you!

Thanks for another cool video. I wanted a black one... but then I saw an offer for 836 for body and 27mm WR... I bought it and need to wait 3 weeks to be delivered. I will us Samual's settings. Thanks for that!
Brilliant. Thank you so much Samuel. I am a big fan of Panasonic bridge cameras and am finally learning to use them properly! But I am curious about the benefits of larger sensors and more portable cameras and have just bought an XE4, partly for sentimental reasons as most of my film photography was done with a Fujica ST605 SLR, bought in 1977! As per, bewildered by the FJ XE4 menu (having partly mastered Panasonic's), I found your video very useful, particularly the disabling of the touch screen!
Good review. And there are several “way arounds” the missing controls, but it’s annoying Fuji just skipped them. If the camera was 100€ more expensive to get that buttons and switches, most people would hand the cash over happily.
So the most controversial thing is the AF dial missing isn’t it- but actually this technique you explained in the video of overriding the auto focus is actually a faster technique than having to flip the AF dial on the front it seems. It requires less thinking in a way, as you don’t need to think about flipping a dial, the only thing you need to think about is the focus ring and whether you decide to use it to override- which you would do anyway! I mean to me this seems more intuitive, and much more simple. Am I right or maybe I’m missing something?
I am new to Fuji, and have just got my XE-4 plus a manual lens 3 days ago. Your sharing help me a lot! (although i will not follow some of your setting.) Keep it up. Just subscribed youe channel ~~
Wow, I really appreciate this video and all the information. I've been looking hard at Fuji for a combination street photography/short film camera and this looks like the camera I want/need. Has all the functionality I love in the X100V for stills, but the addition of interchangeable lenses, and the core functionality I wanted for video from the XT-3/4. When I shoot short films I'm always on a tripod or gimbal and using manual focus, so I'm not really missing anything with the lack of IBIS. Can't wait to get this camera!
Awesome! Glad to know my video was helpful to you! The X-E4 is definitely capable! But one thing I haven't experienced till making this video is overheating. With the X-E4 you need to be a little careful when shooting 4K. The camera overheated for me once when I had the camera out in the sun on a tripod and filming for 1 hour straight. When recording shorter takes you shouldn't encounter that problem. So make sure to turn the camera off between takes if you plan to shoot in the sun or warm days!
you say that AF ALL means the camera choses for you the right mode. thats not correct, it only means that you can scroll through all AF modes (if you use the front dial for AF modes) instead of being stuck in for area for exanple, and changing only the size of the area. but i like your review. i think it is really helpful for beginners. thank you!
The S-AF/MF dual mode with peaking and keep-your-finger-half-pressed-on-the-shutter-button technique is how my Olympus camera works too. It feels awkward but works, and you can use manual focus but also don't have to push any buttons to suddenly auto-focus on something different. Hmm... thinking about switching away from micro four thirds to Fujifilm, but money money money.
Do you know that you can press and hold the "DISP/BACK" Button to quickly access to the FN button settings ? It's faster and more handy than go by thé menu.
...man man man, du hast mich jetzt so angefixt mit dieser Kamera, ich habe das Ding jetzt bestellt. 🙈 Bin sehr gespannt was mich erwartet. 🙆🏼♂️ Wird hoffentlich in zwei Wochen geliefert 🚛💨💨💨 Beste Grüße aus Hamburg ⚓️ Jens 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
This was extremely useful and I love the minimalist screen you decided to go with. This is my first camera that i've bought myself and I'm excited to learn some new things and maybe try out making videos. I watched the video you made with your friend and saw the photos of the containers... OMG they were so fricken good.
I never used burst mode or ever explained about speed between shots ever. I always found burst mode stats to be crazy but what I like least about X-e4 is the new navigation both physical and digital menu but a close second is his slow single jpg photos take . Some people on RUclips or reddit attacked me for commenting on this, saying it was user error and I'm an idiot for not knowing it was the jog post processing .. but after 4 Fuji cameras Indver even heard of that. I noticed that the only thing that causes the crazy delay I experience was the "Clarity" slider which when starting I had at +2 or -1. So weird that the clarity effect slowed that camera down so much but it cant make a noticable improvement to image quality.
Clarity involves intensive processing of the image so it is obvious that it will take a second to process and save. Nothing "weird" about it and it does make a noticeable difference. It didn't happen on your other cameras because they didn't have that setting! *TURN OFF CLARITY* No idea what you mean about burst mode being crazy, when shooting manual focus lenses I sometimes use 8fps when shooting people with shallow Depth of Field to get at least one shot sharp. Sounds to me like you don't really understand the cameras that you use.
Love your videos Samuel! always chilled with nice music and this one has been especially good at helping me understand how to use my xe4. can you tell me how you change the exposure time from anything between 2-30seconds. Without the front dial it's tricky! Thanks and all the best from Australia!
nice solution with zooming in, however, when shooting street with manual lens, its worth nuttin.. i don't like that they take out buttons and switches which were good
Hmmm... I might buy it soon. Very comprehensive guide. Thanks! 1 Year later, do you still recommend it?? I already have a GR IIIx, but wants more lens options and better video capability.
I enjoyed your video of the overall guide with the settings that you personally use. I don't own any Fuji digital products except a Fuji medium format 645 film camera and it was my go to camera for traveling with it's fixed lens. Super sharp optics that always made pleasing images. So I've always been curious how they're digital stuff is like. Thanks for the video. I'll do more research to see what I end up with.
Thanks for this. Great stuff. So nice when another photographer (who actually photographs) explains this stuff, versus just a gearhead. Damn this setup looks sexy, especially with that lenshood at the end. I'm probably not the only one who wonders which one that was. Was it the one by Squarehood? Take care, inspirational dude
how do you keep the touch screen swipe gestures on? I set mind, turn camera off and next time I turn on it defaults back to touching screen takes a photo
Thanks for the video. I'm going to get the camera soon with the 50mm f2 to pair with my X100V. Is that the 50mm on the camera in the video? I wanted to see what the size would be like because the XE4 is a pretty small camera.
still considering whether i should buy the 27mm kit set, and buy an extra XF 18-55 for it. it would be my first mirrorless camera, really like the form factor and price to performance ratio of this camera
Get the kit and hold off on the 18-55 until you figure out what focal lengths and lighting conditions you end up shooting in. You might find that you need wider apertures than the 18-55 allows, so something like the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 or 56mm f/1.4 may be more suitable. Or maybe you end up shooting wide in low light and need the Fuji 18mm f2. Don't be afraid of pushing the ISO to 12,800 in low light though.
Hi Samuel. Great video. would you prefer the Fuji X100V or the fuji XE4? I'm a little torn. I have the XE3 and love it . I also own an Xpro 2. I currently don't have a 35mm equivalent lens and I owned a fuji x100f and stupidly got rid of it. is the new 27mm lens as good a performer as the X100? you make a great case for the Xe4 as a street and video camera.
I love the design of the camera it’s near perfect, I just wish they’d used older style strap lugs not the type you get on a dslr. I’m not sure any other Fuji camera has those like the xe-4 does.
After watching the previous video I bought the x-e2 and having so much fun lol. WIsh I could try this someday and hopefully the price is much more affordable.
Nice! That is what I personally do as well. Buying cameras that are a few years older when the price is right. But I think the X-E4 has a good price already for what it offers.
Great explanation. I want to ask you about lens. I have big heavy lens of Tamron 17-70 in my Fujifilm x-t 4 and its not comfortable to walk all day with this heavy staff. Could you recommend some lite lens like 10 - 12 or 14 mm for my camera?
Very good and informative video! The only thing I can't get my X-E4 to work is the AF+M setting with focus peaking: I have set my AF to S, the AF+M is on and the MF assist is on high white. I can now lock AF, keep the shutter release half pressed and change manually the focus, but the focus peaking is NOT visible (in neither colour).... do I have to activate anything else 🤷🏻♂️ thanks

Thanks man!!! Hope it will be helpful for new X-E4 users.
Thanks for the video! Just ordered my X-E4 with the 23mm F2 - my first Fuji camera! So excited! Greetings to Hamburg!
@@SamuelStreetlife Good to know. Thanks. I typically shoot short takes so that will be fine. Thanks again.
Excellent video very pragmatic and easy to follow
Your videos are so inspiring and have a great vibe, I just ordered a X-E4. Thanks!
Great review and settings ideas! Have you covered the AE-L? I think I missed it.
you say that AF ALL means the camera choses for you the right mode. thats not correct, it only means that you can scroll through all AF modes (if you use the front dial for AF modes) instead of being stuck in for area for exanple, and changing only the size of the area.
but i like your review. i think it is really helpful for beginners. thank you!
Can’t wait to receive my X-E4 next week and reference your setup!
🙌 yeay
The S-AF/MF dual mode with peaking and keep-your-finger-half-pressed-on-the-shutter-button technique is how my Olympus camera works too. It feels awkward but works, and you can use manual focus but also don't have to push any buttons to suddenly auto-focus on something different. Hmm... thinking about switching away from micro four thirds to Fujifilm, but money money money.
Just the video I needed right now, thank you!!!
Nice! 💪👍
Very helpful vid. Observation. You have a thumb rest but use you thumb to press the shutter button.
Bin sehr gespannt was mich erwartet. 🙆🏼♂️
Wird hoffentlich in zwei Wochen geliefert 🚛💨💨💨
Beste Grüße aus Hamburg ⚓️
Jens 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻
Dude my camera was due to ship yesterday, now delayed until 11th! Can't wait for it though. Nice video.
Yeah I had the same with Amazon UK. Fujifilm have stated that the 27mm is delayed until 11th, but not said anything about body only.
Super helpful vid for this first time owner!! Thank you!
This was extremely useful and I love the minimalist screen you decided to go with. This is my first camera that i've bought myself and I'm excited to learn some new things and maybe try out making videos. I watched the video you made with your friend and saw the photos of the containers... OMG they were so fricken good.
Thanks for making such a great video. Now I don’t have to and can just point people here 😅👏🏾👏🏾
I never used burst mode or ever explained about speed between shots ever.
*TURN OFF CLARITY*
No idea what you mean about burst mode being crazy, when shooting manual focus lenses I sometimes use 8fps when shooting people with shallow Depth of Field to get at least one shot sharp.
Sounds to me like you don't really understand the cameras that you use.
Thanks for this helpful Video! I will get mein X-E4 this week and your tips will help me very much to cusome it for me! 👍😉 Wolf
Nice vid sir. Strikes a good balance with enough to get you started but not so much to make me watch at 1.75 speed.
Nice! Glad to hear that👍🙏 :)
Love your videos Samuel! always chilled with nice music and this one has been especially good at helping me understand how to use my xe4. can you tell me how you change the exposure time from anything between 2-30seconds. Without the front dial it's tricky! Thanks and all the best from Australia!
nice solution with zooming in, however, when shooting street with manual lens, its worth nuttin.. i don't like that they take out buttons and switches which were good
This camera look so goood wanna keep it in my hands
Incredibly informative and concise! Thank you SO much - I’ve shared it to my clients!
still deciding between this and the x100v
Pretty much boils down to the WR argument for me.
The obvious starting point is, do you want to change lenses or not!
@@fredbloggs545 yes but the x100v just look so much cooler lol
@@skypekai yea!

Ha ha fair point! That's why I got the X-E3 in silver with a silver 27mm pancake. ;)
Thank you for the effort Samuel. Great stuff. Keep it up!
Dude! Very nice video, and some great solutions to lack of buttons!
Subscribed.
Loved my X-E3, and look forward to get this new one.
Love the vid, I’m still a noob with this cam but I love it, how do I access shutter speed through the menu tho? Not the manual way
Another way to access to the buttons setup menu is pressing and holding the back/display button
Man ich hoffe du kehrst bald wieder zu Fujifilm zurück und machst in Zukunft auch weiterhin Content Fuji bezogen!
Very nice tips, thank you for this video
Tolles Video. Wieder was gelernt. Danke 🤝
Many thanks Samuel! A lot of helpful tips in this video!
Very useful information, cheers.
The no AF switch, just set it to manual focus all the time, then always use back button for focusing. You can always get peaking this way.
I see that it isn't the squarehood one so now I'm really curious. Is it the JJC?
still watching despite not buying.. lol.. the video editing is getting even more dope by the way! ;)
You have done a great favor with this video or else many were going away from this due to new styling and removing of some buttons.
how do you keep the touch screen swipe gestures on? I set mind, turn camera off and next time I turn on it defaults back to touching screen takes a photo
Thanks a lot for the Tipps. This is what I was looking for! Do you also consider to post Videos in German?
Thanks for the video, I like the tape over the dioptre tip, does Fuji provide software to process Raw files, or do you have to buy your own.
Thanks Samuel love your channel
I wanted to buy this camera, well it is out of stock everywhere and I don’t wanna pay for a used one more than a new one. Well done Fuji :(
I just came here for the changing images in the back ;)
Great tutorial. Thanks
I love how you're super professional but when the poster falls down, you're like, shit. Lol.
İt was amazing and very helpful 🥰 thank you so much Man !
I love the design of the camera it’s near perfect, I just wish they’d used older style strap lugs not the type you get on a dslr. I’m not sure any other Fuji camera has those like the xe-4 does.
Loved the video!
When the poster felt down and your reaction „scheiße“ i knew you were German 😂
After watching the previous video I bought the x-e2 and having so much fun lol. WIsh I could try this someday and hopefully the price is much more affordable.
Nice! That is what I personally do as well. Buying cameras that are a few years older when the price is right. But I think the X-E4 has a good price already for what it offers.
@@SamuelStreetlife I like the X-E2 better for button layout, been using mine since 2014 for stills, but not for video which is pretty awful.
I can now lock AF, keep the shutter release half pressed and change manually the focus, but the focus peaking is NOT visible (in neither colour).... do I have to activate anything else 🤷🏻♂️ thanks
hi sam great videos.! Thanks. May i know what lens you attached in your XE4? thanks
